First up high fives to the XDA developer community, to villainrom and to unlocker.com....im a noob but have mangaed to root my Oranage branded hero and am running the Aman RA 1.5.2 recovery image and villainrom v12....which both work great!!
What I want to know is what is the 'default' name for the backup image (recovery-backup?) when performing a nandroid backup through the root menu? Basically I did an initial backup from the stock rom prior to loading the villain rom, I've now got a stable version of 2.1 running and was wondering if i take another backup will it replace my previous back up ? or can i save multiples ? (i want one back up per rom?)
Is this possible ?
Cheers in advance

You can use a file manager like Astro to rename the back-up or just save the back-up to your pc...
ok cheers for that.....but what im trying to find out is what the recovery image defaults to...i.e its name so i know the image im looking at relates to the 'last' backup i took......Ive done another backup but cant see any files time/date stamped at the time of the backup except for 'DiskcacheIndex35089'....could this be it? or am i totally barking up the wrong tree? lol
Cheers
edit - Maybe i should have said....when using root menu to perform a nandroid backup what are the defaults for 'save location' and 'file name' of the recovery image? theres a nandroid file on my sd card...is it in there? Basically I have made two backup files using the root menu one on the stock rom and one on the villain v12 but i cant find two similar files so am struggling to work out what belongs where?
Any expansion/further explanation would be much appriciated
Cheers
Sorted it....just wasnt looking hard enough lol
I know on the thunderbolt it names it by the date/time at which you do it. It doesn't overwrite the previous one because it is a different name

Hey guys I was Hoping someone could maybe Answer a few Questions I have about Restoring Nandroid Backups...
Ok First off I'm a Experienced Clockwork Recovery user, and because of that I guess you can say I'm kind of a Noob to Other Recoveries. Now even though Most Recoveries Do have the Same basic Functions ... I guess its the ones Not Available in Clockwork that I Need the Answers to...
I was Tempted to try TWRP for a while now, and just Yesterday finally Did! But Although its Installed I really Haven't made a Backup, or Flashed a Rom. So After going through the TWRP Recovery menu a Little, I was Curious How do you Compress a Backup? Is that a Option given After you go through the motions of making a Backup?
I'm thinking YES, but Haven't made one so figured I Ask first, seeing I'm Not sure I'll ever actually get that far!
Reason I'm saying this is because...
I have Nandroid Backups on my Sdcard which were made with Clockwork and if it Isn't Possible to Restore my Already Made Backups using TWRP, I'd Probably just go Back to Clockwork as my Default Recovery...
Anyone know if its Possible to Restore Nandroids made from Clockwork, with TWRP?
Thanx in Advance...

Yes, you're correct. Would have to create a backup first, then you'd be able to compress it.

Great question. I hadn't ever thought of this ... but the question does make complete sense.
Short answer: Depends which version of CWM and TWRP .. some versions yes and some versions no.
Longer answer:
For starters, each recovery stores the their recovery files in separate directories and uses different "file extensions". I think they used to be compatible in the sense they both used images of the partitions. The most recent version of CWM, 5.0.2.0 is now using tar files for system and data which wouldn't be compatible with the TWRP restore process.
I think TWRP was/is using exact images of the actual partitions created with the 'dd' linux binary.
I haven't checked the TWPR or CWM in the last few months just followed updates on twitter, IRC and here. I'm sure if my information is out of date somebody will post up to correct.
Hope that helps!
On the compression is, when your in the backup screen and you see the options for you to select what u want to back up at the bottom there is a box that says compress backup and you would just select that before you begin the backup process. Compressed backups take a bit longer to complete but are worth the weight.

Hey you wouldn't happen to know the answer to my question about Restoring a Nandroid made with Clockwork from or to TWRP would you??
Thanks Either Way Tho...
I just got my tab 2days ago and am interested in overclocking it.
I read on a site that it is recommended to backup my current ROM before installing the OC Kernel.
The site mentioned that backing up of the ROM "doesn't save anything on your internal storage but does save all your settings and apps."
What exactly does that mean?
1.Does it mean that all my music files, video and pictures get deleted?
2.What if those music files, video and pictures were present when I made the backup?
3.Is Save Game Data affected? Example: I make a backup of the ROM where I am at level 20 of a certain game.
3 days later, I advanced to level 40 when I decided to do a restore.
Do I revert back to level 20, remain at level 40 OR restart from level 1?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
If you're talking about a nandroid backup through clockworkmod, then EVERYTHING exactly how it is will be saved.
But there are other options for overclocking. If you're rooted, you can use an app called "SetCPU"
Oh and...if you're level 20 when you backup, then reach level 40...when you restore the backup, you will be level 20 because thats how it was when you made the backup. If you reach level 40 and want to keep it when you edit your system in some way again, then make another backup.
So a nandroid backup is the same as a ROM backup + Everything on it backed up as well. Am I right to say that?
Sorry for being long winded. I am new to android, having acquired my tab 3days ago. Im afraid I might mess something up thus I want to be thorough. (I come from Apple and Windows Phone)
Thanks in advance again.

When you say rom back up, do you mean a back up using rom manager? If so, yes, it is the same as a nandroid backup. In addition, when using rom manager, you can change the label of the back up file.

Yes a nandroid backup is a complete snapshot of your system including the SD card. However you should not use the rom manager app as it is buggy with our tabs. Instead boot manually into clockwork mod recovery select backup and restore > backup. This will make a complete backup and save it on your SD card. If something goes wrong you can boot into recovery and flash it. If you need instructions on how to get clockwork mod recovery on your tab see the sticky thread in the Dev section.
Ah I see. I flashed clockworkmod recovery already, but whenever I backup, I get some error just after "Backing up data", something along the lines of ".android_secure" not found, skipping data backup.
When I added that directory in my tab and tried backing up again, I get some Volume error, can't remember exactly what it is. I think it's "Inaccessible Volume" or "Volume inaccessible".
I dare not try it again to see the message lest I mess something up and brick it. Any insight on that?
I recently decided to try MROM (I currently have CM7) so I backed up my current ROM and installed MROM. When I tried to check if I could restore my previous ROM, ROM Manager did not list my latest backups, but instead, listed some really old backups. I checked the clockworkmod folder to see if the latest backups were there and they were. Now, for some reason, ROM Manager was looking in the emmc folder, and not the sdcard (where the latest backups were) and I don't know if there's a way to change where it looks for the backups. I changed the settings to use an external sdcard (I don't know if that would help but I tried) and it didn't help. I then booted into recovery and tried the restore option there and I was able to see my latest backups.
I'm not sure why ROM Manager was unable to see them but booting in recovery worked fine. I want to try MROM (and I know I can restore from the recovery console if I really have to) but I just want to understand why this was happening and if there was another way to restore my backups (ROM Manager saves backups in ext3.tar format and I don't know how to use that with adb).
Don't bother with rom manager. I always get rid of it on every cm rom I try. Its pointless. Your recovery works and its a better option IMO.
Thanks! I would still like to know what's going wrong though, if possible, and also if there's a way to restore a backup saved in ext3.tar format using adb.

Hard to tell. You may never find out. ROM Manager can indeed be weird like that, and is in my opinion unreliable.

The backup is a regular TAR archive (as the name suggests). Most recoveries contain the tar tool which you can use to restore the backup.
I've been searching for information about Mobile Odin and CWM, and I remember seeing a post (I think from Chainfire himself), which contained the phrase "MO does not support backups (yet)" - I've searched & searched, but I can't find the post again
Does anyone else remember seeing this, or have any idea when Chainfire is likely to include this capability ?

NO DIRECT ANSWER BUT:
U want to make a Backup, right?
So why u don't use CMW?
If u want to do this while phone is running..
Why u don't use "Online Nandroid Backup"?

Thanks, but I'm running the leaked JB XXLSJ, with PhilZ Touch 3, so I've already got CWM capability
I just thought it would be "nice" if Chainfire was close to including a backup facility in Mobile Odin, also, I didn't want to rile Chainfire by PM'ing him
ps. I did try Online Nandroid Backup, but I couldn't get round the error "mkyaffs2image not found "

Yes, I did apply the patch, but I've just re-downloaded & installed Online Nandroid Backup, re-patched it, and run another backup, and it completed Ok with no error message this time - I guess it's probably a newer version since I tried it before.
However I am now concerned about my backup sizes ...
OND is reporting that my OND backup is 1.25Gig, but my My Philz/CWM backups are all only about 16-17Mb ?
(see OND screenshot)

U can be sure that the 16-17MB backup isn't ok...
So use the OND backup with 1,25GB

The main backup file is kept in a different place since cwm updated, You can still use cwm to backup and restore safely, and if you like it old school, changing the backup format will do it.
Using GT - I9100
I thank those who give helpful comments
I expect the same from others.

I emailed OND's developer, and he confirmed that it's because the CWM v6.x backup data files are now in the clockworkmod blobs sub-folder
I will try changing the backup format though

I deleted all my backups using the CWM and OND menus, but there were still loads of files left, so I manually emptied the Clockworkmod and blobs folders, changed the CWM backup to .tar format, and ran a CWM backup followed by a OND backup
CWM .tar backup size is now 1.6Gig, OND backup is now 1.27Gig

Maybe it's because of the compression type(onandroid must be using a higher compression method), anyway CWM is definitely more secure.

cheers guys,
my GT-I9300 broke - now i got a new one. Exact same model.
I used CWM for creating backups.
Now i read, however, that i only can use the backup if I'm actually using the same version of CWM on my new phone that i also used to create the backup.
I don't know, however, with which version of CWM i created the backups.
This results in the fact, that i cant use the old backups to flash my new phone.
Does anyone know a way to find out with which CWM the Backups were being created?
Thank u all in advance,
Regards

It doesn't need to be the exact same version, but there are incompatibilities between really old and newer versions. Have you actually tried to restore a backup yet?
Also, please look at the sticky threads in this section. There is one here in capital letters saying that you cannot post questions here.

Sorry for that! Ill respect it next time.
Actually i tried.... but it doesnt seem to work, as it says in CWM "No such files found" (I was trying to copy it to the right "Backup" folder in /clockworkmod/backup - but i couldnt find the folder!?) and in Mobile Odin it doesnt work either.. Tells me something about "Partition could not be found in file"...
So its.. kinda weired!
I think it might work if I were able to copy them into the right CWM folder.. but even with root in CMs file manager i cant access it.
Thanks for the help
regards
Flash a CWM recovery make backup .
Open backup folder delete contents .
Copy your backup contents to the folder .
