Hi people,
I'm a new android user (owns X10 Mini Pro) coming from iPhone.
I love the phone so far. It's not rooted, I have installed Helix launcher, some apps I use like FB, Twitter, YM, Foursquare, Dolphin Browser, etc to name a few. I have installed an updated Google Maps 5.0 as well and the stock Gallery of Android 2.1 (since the Album app is boring in Mini Pro) . So far everything's good.
Can anyone recommend anything I can do to pimp up my phone? Any "useful" apps?
It's ok to root the phone as long as the reason has some worth apps to install and as long as it will NOT 'slow down' my phone.
I was an iPhone user for more than 2 years and I want to get convinced if Android is really better than iPhone, so bring in all recommendations (and instructions)
Thanks!

Install Zeam launcher (very fast and easy to use) and Fancy Widget, which gives you weather, time and battery status on one widget.
Install a nice offline navigation app that works in the Philippines like NavDroyd. It works offline and you don't need internet connection in navigation.
Install WiFi Tethering SW like Barnacle. It comes handy when you're not in a WiFi hotspot and you need internet connection for your laptop. Assuming you 'forgot' to bring your Globe broadband dongle.
Install Windows95 (or is it 98?). Try searching the x10 forums about that. Not useful but cool.
If you want a bit of extra speed.. the ultimate Pimp is enabling JIT.. if you haven't already, thats a good place to start... it will make apps and games like angry birds a bit quicker. (you need to Root you phone first, but that's easy)
(download Quadrant benchmark from the Market to see what your current speed score is then try again after JIT, you will not be dissapointed)

besides making the games faster, can it also make the phone (itself) faster? like scrolling to homecreens, opening settings, texting, etc?

I don't think so. I'm only using wireless tethering. It would be useful though since barnacle consumes battery a lot.

I feel stupid! I thought the name of the app to enable JIT is Ultimate Pimp. Hahaha. kept looking for it in the Market.
I realized you mean like 'a great tweak for speed' is enabling JIT. Didn't know enabling JIT needs some commands.
Will definitely try this one when i get home

yeah i thought so. and im thinking wired tether is faster than wireless.
i saw a wired tethering app called EasyTether which doesnt require root, but I think its a trial version which cannot open secured sites, unless you pay.
But I guess bernacle is good. i can always plug the phone via USB while tethering just to keep battery power right?
thanks!

I have a droid eris that is collecting dust and thought it would be a cool toy for my 2 year old. I know they have apps for toddlers and fun games that have a toddler lock built in.
My question is has someone developed or is someone willing to develop a rom that is just for kids. It would only need Wifi.
Just a thought. I wanted to see before I start attempting to develop one myself, which I really do not have time to do.
Thanksa
Try tazz's I-phoney ROM, it's like an I phone so it's perfect for a toddler! Lol!
Seriously, tho, any cm7 ROM would be good. For my young'uns, I disable the screen lock set the launcher to have only one home screen with all the games as shortcuts.

Hi,
would you like to share which app you found usable?
Apart from airplane mode, you could also disable the dialer, e.g. freeze it with Titanium Backup or the like.
(I know your post is quite a few years old, but possibly you still remember the app).

I'm mainly wanting the Honeycomb Gmail layout and hopefully a similar layout for reader and Docs (which docs doesnt work at all right now). So my guess is we need to make the app think that we have Honeycomb installed. So is there any way to do this? It would be kind of like a user agent option that browsers have.
It's much more complicated than that, unfortunately. When you spoof the API level, the apps will still call the Honeycomb API's. When it can't find the API's or if it calls an API that has changed, it will force close.
So would there be any easy way to get the Gmail and Reader Honeycomb versions running on the Touchpad?

So in every operating system there are API/Librarys however you want to term it. What they are is a common set of functions or ways of doing something that programs can use so the developer of said program does not have the recreate the wheel EVERY time they make a program. Thats how we have so many apps in the market.
Now Honeycomb and Gingerbread have very different API/Library's from each other. So what that means is if you were to install the gmail app form honeycomb and "trick" it into actually running what will happen is the program will ask the OS "Okay i need this set of instructions so i can execute" and the OS will reply "WHAT THE **** ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT HOMEBOY YOU BE STRAIGHT TRIPPIN BOO" and will promptly shoot that app in the face and will result in a force close.
So the only way to fix that would be to have all the honeycomb api/librarys. We don't actually have a good way of making that into the tablet because the sorce has not been released. All we have is and SDK which helps us make honeycomb apps but not run them on other devices.
hope that helps... i may be a little wrong in explaining but it should be roughly accurate

Trying to run an app made for honeycomb on gingerbread is like asking if you can use the calculator app made for windows 7 in windows xp (or the paint app).
So,what your saying is,if you trick it I to running, sometimes it works, sometimes it crashes, and sometimes its flakey ....
Actually, I'm sure that's NOT what you were trying to say. you were saying it would not work at all, ever, which honestly,I find very hard to believe. In windows, unless your talking windows 16 bit vs 32bit vs 64 bit binaries, your results are dependant on the app. Some programs runfine if you trick them, some don't run at all.
what MAY be the case here though is that there might be something going on with the libraries they are compiled against. However, all I hear are people repeating what they read elsewhere. I agree with the OP,I would like to be able to force the issue. I don't need the OS, OR some guy on the internet telling me that it wont run. If I want to fruit,I'd prefer the OS to do what I tell it an run it,even if it crashes the whole deviceand requires a reboot.

don't get me wrong,I dont think that you can magically make HC apps run on GB by flipping a few bits in an executable. however, experience on other platforms tell me that there my well be some allocations that really are GB apps, with minor tablet optimizations, but marked as HC apps, because a developer just used the GB stuff he was used to instead of anything specific to HC. Wheter or not this is possible on android,I don't know, but its.certainly seen on other platforms. As such,I'd like the ability to try to force an app to run. honestly, who cares if hangs or force closes. its no big deal. I understand why a developer does not want that to happen,as a gracefully warning and refusal to run does not give his app a bad Rep. I however will not be confused. If it hangs, force closes,or even corrupts data,I will understand why it did it. I first. with nanny android telling me its a bad idea to run it,but if.I dont believe her she should step aside and let me grab the hot pan.handle on-the-job stove.

Its true that other apps may run. But we are not talking about other appswe were talking about the gmail app specifically. Which in android is dependant on many of the other Google apps. So no, in that case even if you could trick the app into thinking it was on HC it would immediately close because it willtry to call the contacts app and so on. So then we get into making a majority of the HC gapps run on gingerbread. No Dev would waste their time on this knowing ICS is only a few months away.
So while many third party apps are ports from GB anyway and would run the first party gapps will not period

Just curious what are other people's reasons for wanting root?
For me it's for wifi tether, ad free, use my backup pro to get some rooted features, get headphone icon to go away when plugged in and see some of the other features that big red took out. Pretty simple dude.
Pretty much for all the same reasons why everyone roots on all android platform phones... I'm assuming

I want root for command line access to system files, titanium backup, blocking ads, and for making the led notifcations stay on when the screen is on.
imagine your computer was locked down, you couldn't modify your os, if you wanted a certain feature you had to go buy a different computer that had that feature... how many computers would you need in order to get all of the features you wanted? or you could 'root' it and have just one computer but with all of the things you wanted on it... and remove the things you didn't want.
same concept, but on a phone instead of a desktop.

I hate the Ongoing WiFi notification and I want to kill it when I have root. Plus ad blocking, native tethering, over clocks, adding my own apps to Multi-Window, turning off the stupid Install mode when I connect it to computer over USB, getting S-Planner back, etc.

The Tether Hack and Tether hack with WiFi notification should work on stock rooted and stock de-odex I545VRUAMDK based ROMS.
If your rocking a custom ROM check with your ROM dev for changes to framework-res.apk BEFORE flashing this.
The other two mods, Remove E911 Icons, and disable Ongoing WiFi Noticiation NEED a de-odex ROM.
The orginal "Tether Hack doesnt always kill the WiFi Notification so I rebuilt the mods using a different method.
EDIT: One of the mods were removed because it caused GPS Issues.

Removes ongoing WiFi Notification in status bar
Thanks to shoman94 for his help re-compiling framework-res. He has a good tut HERE!

Thanks for posting this, both of the mods work great.
Just a quick question. With regards to the Tether Hack, how does this compare to apps like pdanet which bypass the subscription check but still seem to use the stock Wifi Hotspot? I don't know what exactly is happening behind the scenes with these other apps, if they do anything other than bypass the check. As an unlimited data user, is it "safer" to use pdanet or the other apps, or are you really just doing the same thing they provide without the need for another app?
Thanks again.

It hacks the tether feature samsung put in the ROM to call upon another app to verify the subscription.
So instead of
1. Tether app start
2. Call App to check subscription
3. Return results to tether app
4. Tether... Or not Tether...
It goes...
1. Start tether app
4. Tether.
Steps 2 and 3 are removed from the framework of the ROM

These apps are using something momentary (IE: The hack has to happen every time you push the *Big Friendly Button*) to bypass the check; I'm not sure what and I haven't had the opportunity/need to go digging into the how. I use Widgetsoid and it does the same thing.
This hack is permanent; it happens when you flash and doesn't require anything afterward. It allows you to use the included app on the phone without having to download any free apps that might have limits or ads and there's no paid version (FoxFi, for example). It means there are less "moving parts" involved, and theoretically, there are fewer things that could go wrong.
As for is one "safer" than the other...I'll assume you mean any less likely to get you in trouble...and the answer is no. They're achieving the same thing through different methods; one's just a bit "cleaner" than the others.
EDIT: Didn't see Scott's post...damn pages. Still relevant, I think.

Right this is just a resource hack. Framework-res does not have any smali code and subsequently no dex or odex files.
Which app are you using to tether?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for developing the Clean Rom!
I've used your clean rom on the S3 and the S4 and I must admit it's some good stuff you've developed.
I've installed this tether hack but after reading this thread, I'm not clear on what app you are using to tether?
Is it the mobile hotspot app from the Big Red?
Or does Samsung have their own separate tethering app?
I know it's a newbie question, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
Where is the tether app icon? I can't find it anywhere...
Is this the TrevE tether?
What exactly does this do since we already have a hot spot with this phone?
Also, when flashing do the cache's need to be wiped?
