First, my phone's specs:
VZW
DCD 3.2.5 ROM
3.42.30 Radio
2.40 bootloader
1GB Kingston microSD
I'm wanting to try a slightly earlier radio version (3.42.02) and maybe some others. I followed the SD flash method in the wiki, but to no avail.
When I boot into the bootloader with the SD card installed (and the radio rom in the root directory, labeled properly) I get a grey screen that says something along the lines of updating but with some error message halfway down the screen.
I cant read it all since that screen just flashes very quickly and then goes straight to the bootloader screen.
Am I not doing this correctly? Whats the problem?
Do I need to reload the bootloader? Reinstall stock rom and upgrade from there?

No, you don't want to do that.
There is most likely an issue with either the card formatting or the filename for the flash image.
I believe it has to be TITAIMG.nbh (i don't know for sure if this is case sensitive or not)
Also, try a utility like CNETX FlashFormat and see if it can format the card properly for flashing, that's how I did mine.
I saw the CNETX FlashFormat link in your VZW Flashing walkthrough (which BTW was freakin awesome - after searching too many threads, I came across your site which pretty much answered every question I had about upgrading)
I was too quick to leave the site after seeing that its a purchase product, but I see there is a 10 day trial also.
I'll give it a shot now and post back
BTW, I tried changing the radio roms by using all caps for the file name, as well as how you typed it in the post above.
"No Image File"
"No Image File" is what is displayed on the update screen for a split second before going into the bootloader screen
CNETX FlashFormat didnt help
Any other suggestions? I'm going to try renaming the file into all lower case
UPDATE: all lower case didnt work either...keep getting that "no image file" error

you could always format on a Windows computer thru the command prompt or right-clicking on the removeable drive and formatting there...
I can't seem to find the thread/post with the proper parameters to flash in the command prompt

tried that earlier from the same post you are talking about - got the same error message
SOLVED
Fixed it
For some reason, the built in SD reader on my Dell Inspiron 6000 was causing the problem (still dont know what the exact problem is)
Formatted my card using an 8-in-1 SanDisk card reader
Update is working now
It has to be a Dell laptop issue. I had the same problem where I was trying to format the SD card using the interal card reader, but it never worked. I had to use nueSPL (I think that is what it was called). It formatted it for me correctly and then it worked like a charm.
And installed Modaco's ROM ( nice work fella ) - a few questions ( I'm new to this so bear with me).
1) Where do I get the new 'radio' - and how do I install it? ( If you say 'push' it to the phone, can you explain that.
2) Does BlueX make te Bluetooth work on the Hero ( send & recieve files ). Yes I did a search!
3) Is there a simplistic way to partition my SD card? I'm on a Mac with no access to PC / Linux machines
4) I did ( and glad did ) a Nandroid backup which I used once effectively - where s the backup file, is it on the phones computer. If so can I transfer it to the SD card ( and still use it )..I want to save space as I'm down to 97mb.
5) Finally, still to save space, can I et the various program cache files to use the SD card instead of the phones memory.
Thanks all
1) The most recent radio can be found at MoDaCo here. It's packaged as a *.zip so installation is as easy as copying it to /sdcard as update.zip and then applying it as before from the recovery screen.
2) Dunno.... haven't pursued BT xfers myself yet.
3) I've no experience with Macs so dunno what partitioning software is available for them, but you can partition your card non-destructively (shrink the FAT32 partition and create a new ext3 in the resulting free space) using the GParted LiveCD. Boot from the LiveCD with the card in a reader and it will be recognised. Just be very careful that you select the correct volume before making any changes.... repartitioning your HDD by mistake can cause raised blood pressure!
4) /sdcard/nandroid/HT*/ contains the backups. I generally keep my most recent on-card but save various others on a PC for testing purposes.
5) Search the Market for TA Utility. It does exactly that.

Speaking of the radios, my generic hero came with baseband 63.18.55.06U_6.35.04.25 and I downloaded modaco's update (didn't apply it yet) and I'm unclear as to the version number of this baseband update since it is marked identical to mine with the exception of the "U".

but the new radio is 63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15.
My UK Orange Radio version number has the U as well. It it customised by Orange perhaps ?
I'm seeing no difference between 63.18.55.06U_6.35.04.25 and 63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15 on an Orange Hero running MoDaCo v1.1. I updated the radio after reflashing the ROM so that I could compare before with after, and my untrained eye sees nothing unexpected. No issues previously, and none afterwards.

my UK sim-free Hero had the U in the version before I upgraded the radio, and it still has the U in the version now, even though it wasn't shown in the version string at MoDaCo, whence I got the upgrade.

(STEP 1 GOLDCARD)
Finaly i done it all phew i had a really long day learning yesterday from the start i was on the tmobile latest rom RUU_Hero_TMobile_UK_2.73.110.26_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
I figured out the goldcard soulotion http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=572683
Great video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/18/how-to-downgrade-your-htc-hero-so-it-can-be-rooted/
01. Download QMAT 5.06 here http://revskills.de/downloads/qmat_506.zip
It’s a demo version so will only run for 10 minutes.
02. Format your SD card to FAT32. Please keep in mind some brands of SD cards do not work. Note sd card must be in phone here
03. Use adb to run this command: adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
04. Copy the SD card cid code displayed after the adb command.
05. Start Qmat and Click on Cyptoanalysis Tools > Crypto Toolbox.
06. Look at the bottom, there is a text box (beside the “Reverse String” button) enter the SD card cid code you got earlier.
Click on the “Reverse String” button, the result is reversed…
Example: 532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402
07. Copy the reversed SD card cid code.
08. Go to QMAT goldcard site here http://revskills.de/pages/goldcard.html to generate your goldcard (yes it says for G1 but works for our Hero too).
09. Enter your email. For the correct SD card cid code, you need to replace the first 2 characters to 00.
Example: From “532600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402” to “002600bd227d9c0347329407514d5402”
10. Click Continue and you will receive the goldcard.img in .zip format in your email.
11. Go to your email, download the zip file and save it to a directory and unzip it to goldcard.img
12. Download HxD Hex Editor from here http://download.cnet.com/HxD-Hex-Editor/30....html?tag=mncol
13. Install and launch HxD Hex Editor program. Note SD Card has to be in your pc or reader here at this point NOTE ALSO (run the editor as administrator in order for it to appear)
14. Go to Extra tab > Open Disk. Under Physical disk, select Removable Disk (Must be your SD card), uncheck “Open as Readonly), click OK.
15. Go to Extra again, Open Disk Image, open up goldcard.img which you’ve saved/unzipped earlier.
Now, you should have two tabs, one is your removable disk, the other is goldcard.img. Press OK when prompted for “Sector Size” 512 (Hard disks/Floppy disks), click OK.
16. Click on goldcard.img tab. Go to Edit tab > Select All, edit tab again > copy.
17. Click on the “removable disk” tab. Select offset 00000000 till offset 00000170 (including the 00000170 line), click on Edit tab and then Paste Write.
18. Click on File > Save. now you can exit the program.
19. Reboot your phone with this SD Card (now GoldCard) inside
20. Use the Official HTC RUU to downgrade to 2.73.405.5 here ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hero...ed_NoDriver.exe
from which you can fastboot boot and/or root your phone with flashrec Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 (Please see guide below for this)
Done.
(STEP 2 recovery)
You need to install this recovery first with flashrec instructions below
You can use flashrec to flash the patched recovery, from where you can do all the usual stuff (and even put the old hboot back on if you want!)
Notice:
flashrec is using an exploit that isn't patched yet in the current kernel used by HTC, however if/when HTC patches this, flashrec will stop working.
So for now it's ok but a next version might have patched this, so keep this in mind !
Quick Howto:
1. On your phone, goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this).
4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
flashrec-20090815.apk
Cyanogen’s / Modaco Hero Recovery Image
Update: updated flashrec here
6. Extract the cm-hero-recovery.img out of the MoDaCoPatchedRecovery-1.0.zip and put it somewhere on your computer.
7. Save both the cm-hero-recovery.img and the flashrec-20090815.apk to your computer, then copy them both to your SD card
(do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them in the root of the SD card itself).
8. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
9. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
10. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the flashrec-20090815.apk file and click on it.
If asked, tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
11. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
12. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
Then click on the Flash Custom Recovery Image button and wait for it to finish.
13. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on
(keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background).
As long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go and load other ROM/hboot/whatever.
THIS IS OPTIONAL RECOVERY BELOW BETTER OPTIONS BUT YOU NEED THE ABOVE RECOVERY FIRST
I then flashed the new recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3 Great Video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img
(STEP 3 INSTALL CUSTOM ROM)
Then i installed the cool modaco custom rom v2.8 to my phone http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...com/292018/xda/
Great Video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero/
Also dont forget to upgrade your radio here http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...ate-zip-format/
Download the latest one normally on the top to install rename the zip to Update put on root of SD card and boot into recovery and install update.zip option easy as that.
STEP 4 PARTITION SD CARD)
Then finaly i partioned my sd card using the recovery imiage with thease commands directly from the phone in recovery.
I ran the following commands in this order from recvoery mode:
- Wipe data + cache (factory reset)
- Wipe ext partition on SD-card
- Wipe Dalvik-cache on SD-card (NOT on /data !) [email protected] ALWAYS WORK
- Partition SD-card : 500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32
- Convert ext2 to ext3
- Installed ROM

hi, was following your procedure in order to crezte the Gold Card. Everything goes perfect up to step 20. After I used to flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe; big mistake. after flashing I can't put phone in recovery mode, it showing a triangle with a exclamation mark in the center, also GPS is not existing at all, 3 G network not present. My phone has been bought from Hong Kong.
I was trying to follow the steps to recovery but useless; flashrec-20090815.apk is not working, even the new versions. If someone can help me with some advices, i'm really desperate. thanks
help please!!!!
Hi all. after I create the gold card, see link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...187#post5036187, I RUU my Htc Hero from Hong Kong with SEA: (South East Asia)
RUU_Hero_HTC_Asia_SEA_WWE_2.73.728.5_release_signe d_NoDriver.exe and I'd seen there is no GPS, Market and 3G, than I'd applied another RUU RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.66_WWE_test_signed_NoDri ver.exe and this time I have Market, but still no GPS and 3G. I tried different RUU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622, but no one working, not even the previous two. I tried to use flashrec-20090815.apk in order to flash, but no working. even the new version of flashrec not working. I tried to put in recovery mode holding POWER + HOME button, but after boot is showing a triangle with exclamation mark in the middle. Same is happening if I try to go in recovery mode from ADB (command adb shell reboot recovery). Is somebody so kind to explain me what to do in order to restore my phone at least how it was before, please? My skills in android development are 0. thanks
help please!!!!
so, nobody wants to help me ? i'm really desperate ...........
finally, I made again the gold card, after I re flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe, and works. Than I used flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk and recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img and I created Backup.img. Tried to put in recovery mode by pressing in the same time Power and Home and I got the following screen:
"reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]"
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
BTW, GPS and 3G still missing from menu. Trying to update with 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-chinese-signed.zip or with 3.0-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip, I got this :
" -- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...

Verifying update package...
E:No signature (663 files)

Phone hanging, freezing.... HELPPPPPP please!!!!!!!!

What else i can do?
Is there anyone here in this forum who has been complimentary to this guide? I ask because I am an organizer of the recognition awards for Achievement in Technical Writing & Guides (to help people use their phones)... And the Android forums are new, and thus there has been very little response to the intention to recognize those who have contributed knowledge, apps, themes, guides to the community.
thank you. see my sig.

Hi, I have the exact same hero as you do (same system etc..). Didn't work with the "RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe"
so am now about to try it with this one:
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
but after reading you post I am a lil weary...
is you hero still not working 100%??
Thx
1. Bricked my rooted G2 with 2.1 rom by interrupting the radio update process
2. Got it back within 5 days repaired in warranty FOC! mainboard replaced.
3. Flashrec backup recovery did not work, so had to go into goldcard method. (2.73.110.26 CL#69351)
4. Update succesfull. I thank you very much for your efforts Even the ugly static G2 T-Mobile screen now says HERO
5. Linda File Manager + FlashREC
6. Backup recovery -> Backup complete
THANKS
I got a Customer Id Error when I try to install either
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed _NoDriver.exe
or
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD river.exe
I thought the purpose of the GoldCard was to help bypass the ID checking?

It is - the point is that the creation of a goldcard is not an exact science. If your goldcard is not correct, for any reason, it won't work.
There have been many accounts on these forums of people having to try 3 or 4 times (usually using different SD cards) before getting a goldcard that works.

Dave

I got it working on the second attempt. In the tutorial I was reading it advice I use a separate sd card reader when creating the gold card.
On my second attempt I just left the card in the phone the whole time and mounted it through the phone when I needed to perform hex editing on it.
Lovely job, now to choose what custom ROM I shall flash.
Hi,
I have recently bought the Flyer from Hong Kong which runs the asian firmware.
Android version
2.3.3
HTC Sense version
2.1 for Tablet
Software number
1.48.1302.34
I am wondering if I can flash the flyer with WWE rom over it because the asian firmware seems to be...not updating at all. Well regardless to the updating issue, I still want to flash it and I would like to know if it's possible. and How to do it too. Thanks!
I think you need to make a gold card to flash the WWE ROM, since its not intended for your device.
If you can get rooted and S-Off, that will also allow you to flash the ROM. But if the HK Flyer has the 1.07 HBoot like the Taiwan Flyer, then the Revolutionary root method does not yet support your device.

Been there, done that, posted in another thread.... save you a moment or two.
My Hong Kong Flyer P510e 3G/32GB --- HBOOT: 1.10.000 --- ROM: 1.48.708.3 was able to S-OFF via Revolutionary after upgrading the system software. Here is what I did.
#1 You need to update to SW Version 2.00.405.3 from RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.08 9BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed.exe which you can download via this link. It's about 517 MB
#2 Once you get that file, unplug your Flyer from your computer and then double click to run the utility. Somewhere buried in your user account folder will be an image file created by the update utilty. You need the image, do not plug your flyer in and try to update it. In my case, the image file was buried in C:\Documents and Settings\MyAccount\Local Settings\Temp\{0E03141E-27B1-4E3A-B9B9-18DA9C1FCBEC}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B} and was named ROM.zip Hunt around that Temp directory, you should be able to find it.
#3 I renamed ROM.ZIP to PG41IMG.zip.
#4 You need an extra SD Card to make a "Goldcard". A Goldcard is a special SD card that lets you flash ROMs on S-ON devices.
#5 Put the memory card you want to use for the Goldcard into your Flyer.
#6 With the memory card in your Flyer, click on Settings, SD and Phone storage, then click Unmount SD card. Once it unmounts, click Format SD card. (Please keep in mind that some memory cards don’t work, and this will erase all data on your SD Card so back all the data up first to your computer)
#7 On the Flyer, go to Settings, Applications, Development and then make sure USB Debugging is checked.
#8 Download "GoldCard Helper" from the Android Market and open it.
#9 Get the code for mmc2 (mmc2 is the external memory card of your Flyer), go to the website shown on the GoldCard Helper screen and follow the directions to get your Goldcard image.
#10 Download the HxD Hex editor from http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/
#11 Take your SD card out of your Flyer and put it into a SD card reader. Plug the reader into your PC so it shows up on your computer as Removable Disk.
#12 Open the Hex Editor (Run as Administrator if you're on Vista or Windows 7) and click on the Extra tab, then click on Open Disk. Under Physical Disk select Removable Disk (your SD card you just put into the computer). Make sure to UNcheck Open as ReadOnly. Click OK.
#13 Goto the Extra tab again and click Open Disk Image. Open up the goldcard.img that you saved from your email. You should now have two tabs, one is the SD card (Removable Disk) and the other is the goldcard.img Press OK when prompted for Sector Size 512 (Hard Disks/Floppy Disks).
#14 Click on the Goldcard.img tab and click on the Edit tab and click Select All. Then click on the Edit tab again and click Copy.
#15 Click on the Removable Disk tab (Your SD Card) and select offset 00000000 to 00000170 then click on the Edit tab and click Paste Write.
#16 Click on File then click Save.
#17 Close the Hex Editor.
#18 Test the card. Take it out of the computer, then put it back in. Try to open the memory card on the computer (Removable Disk), if it lets you, you are all set.
#19 Copy the PG41IMG.zip file onto your new Goldcard.
#20 Put the Goldcard into your Flyer and boot holding the volume down key.
#21 Update the ROM (takes about 5-10 minutes) You should now have SW Version 2.00.405.3
#22 Go to globaltron's thread and follow the instructions outlined by globaltron.
You should now have a S-OFF device with CWM and Root
Enjoy

I am a bit confuse on step1&2. Why do we need to connect flyer to pc while downloading the rom?
Questions
Really appreciate this post.
I have been thinking to get the HTC Flyer for ages. Seeing with the S off and Perm Rooting plus using the Stock Phone ROM (only Bluetooth) I am tempted to get soon.
However, I read some parts : Whatsapp is not working after S-off and perm root. Apparently it does not recognise the IMEI at all.
see relevant post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197021
which means if I guess it correctly, after s-off and perm root, with includes new ROMs (phone app), normal SMS apply but regards to apps like Whatsapp and Viber may cause issues?
Anyone can verify this? (*Esp S-off users and perm rooters?)
thanks.

This is a completely different issue/question than the original post. Create own thread, or post to the threads discussing Viber and Whatsapp (there are several, I believe).

You don't need to plug it in while downloading the ROM. The reason I say to unplug it is to make sure people don't try to run the ROM update utility with the Flyer attached.
Need some help with the "AdamOutlerUbuntuTotalReFlash" method. I am missing or overlooking something but, can't figure out what. I have installed the Ubuntu 12.0.4 on an older laptop in an effort to 1) learn but 2) mostly to restore my 16GB NT. Currently the Nook will only boot to CWM. I have tried a few different methods and images but, can't seem to get anything to load. Do I need to repartition and can anyony help with that, I am at apoint wher maybe I have tried to learn or do to many new things at once and am frustrated and confused. I don"t believ all is lost but could sure use a little more help/direction. I have followed all of Adam Outler's steps but, seem to run into trouble with having success writing the image to the SD card.
Is this what you are trying?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470910
If so, you do not need to have Ubuntu on your computer, nor know anything about it!
Scroll down to "WIndows" instructions and go!
1. Download - extract - rename Adams file
2. Open your disk imager and load the img you "created" in step 1.
3. Burn the image to your sd card
4. Boot into the card created in step 3 and follow the instructions below the picture. starting with "Theory of..."
thanks

I would like to say thank you for the help and appreciate the support. I will give this a shot. this evening. a few Questions 1) when renaming the AdamOutlerUbuntuTotalReFlash.tar.gz file do i delete the .tar.gz extensions and replace them with the .img extension? or do i do i leave them so that the extension is now .tar.gz.img ? 2) when powering on the device do I power on with the power button on the NT or use the USB cable and let the device power itself on and does it matter if the device is plugged into the charger or the PC? Any specific instructions or specific utilities for formatting the SD Card?
Thanks Again!
I haven't done this recovery myself, so I really don't know anything about it. I would suggest you to read through that topic and see if the answers are there.
The instructions do say "extract" and THEN "rename"
Some general things I can say though:
When burning an image to sd card the card doesn't need to be formatted before doing it.
To get the NT to boot from sd crad is individual from device to device. Many say they only get theirs to do it by inserting charging cable to power adapter.
The three that have passed through my hands have booted to sd either by themselves when turning on power. If they haven't done so right away I hold down the "n" and that's it.

You should read this post before trying out any "unbricking" method and end up permanently bricking your NT.

o.k. so i have downloaded the image, extracted it using winrar but, when i use the win32diskimager to write the image i can find the file but, the win 32 diskimager does not recognize the sd card or doesn't even let me open the little file foled at all for that matter as far as where to chose to write it to?
Hi all,
I tried Adams' method along with a few days worth of other methods. I've been unable to get past the writing MLO portion in Adams' method. Has anyone been able to get past this?
p.s. I'm a semi-n00b, this is my first tablet If it was a phone I'd be fine lol
Nvmd, I think I was using an old file, got it working now. Large thanks and respect to Adam!
