Hi,
I have recently bought the Flyer from Hong Kong which runs the asian firmware.
Android version
2.3.3
HTC Sense version
2.1 for Tablet
Software number
1.48.1302.34
I am wondering if I can flash the flyer with WWE rom over it because the asian firmware seems to be...not updating at all. Well regardless to the updating issue, I still want to flash it and I would like to know if it's possible. and How to do it too. Thanks!
I think you need to make a gold card to flash the WWE ROM, since its not intended for your device.
If you can get rooted and S-Off, that will also allow you to flash the ROM. But if the HK Flyer has the 1.07 HBoot like the Taiwan Flyer, then the Revolutionary root method does not yet support your device.

Been there, done that, posted in another thread.... save you a moment or two.
My Hong Kong Flyer P510e 3G/32GB --- HBOOT: 1.10.000 --- ROM: 1.48.708.3 was able to S-OFF via Revolutionary after upgrading the system software. Here is what I did.
#1 You need to update to SW Version 2.00.405.3 from RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.00.405.3_R_Radio_20.3501.30.08 9BU_3809.05.04.10_M_release_194964_signed.exe which you can download via this link. It's about 517 MB
#2 Once you get that file, unplug your Flyer from your computer and then double click to run the utility. Somewhere buried in your user account folder will be an image file created by the update utilty. You need the image, do not plug your flyer in and try to update it. In my case, the image file was buried in C:\Documents and Settings\MyAccount\Local Settings\Temp\{0E03141E-27B1-4E3A-B9B9-18DA9C1FCBEC}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B} and was named ROM.zip Hunt around that Temp directory, you should be able to find it.
#3 I renamed ROM.ZIP to PG41IMG.zip.
#4 You need an extra SD Card to make a "Goldcard". A Goldcard is a special SD card that lets you flash ROMs on S-ON devices.
#5 Put the memory card you want to use for the Goldcard into your Flyer.
#6 With the memory card in your Flyer, click on Settings, SD and Phone storage, then click Unmount SD card. Once it unmounts, click Format SD card. (Please keep in mind that some memory cards don’t work, and this will erase all data on your SD Card so back all the data up first to your computer)
#7 On the Flyer, go to Settings, Applications, Development and then make sure USB Debugging is checked.
#8 Download "GoldCard Helper" from the Android Market and open it.
#9 Get the code for mmc2 (mmc2 is the external memory card of your Flyer), go to the website shown on the GoldCard Helper screen and follow the directions to get your Goldcard image.
#10 Download the HxD Hex editor from http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/
#11 Take your SD card out of your Flyer and put it into a SD card reader. Plug the reader into your PC so it shows up on your computer as Removable Disk.
#12 Open the Hex Editor (Run as Administrator if you're on Vista or Windows 7) and click on the Extra tab, then click on Open Disk. Under Physical Disk select Removable Disk (your SD card you just put into the computer). Make sure to UNcheck Open as ReadOnly. Click OK.
#13 Goto the Extra tab again and click Open Disk Image. Open up the goldcard.img that you saved from your email. You should now have two tabs, one is the SD card (Removable Disk) and the other is the goldcard.img Press OK when prompted for Sector Size 512 (Hard Disks/Floppy Disks).
#14 Click on the Goldcard.img tab and click on the Edit tab and click Select All. Then click on the Edit tab again and click Copy.
#15 Click on the Removable Disk tab (Your SD Card) and select offset 00000000 to 00000170 then click on the Edit tab and click Paste Write.
#16 Click on File then click Save.
#17 Close the Hex Editor.
#18 Test the card. Take it out of the computer, then put it back in. Try to open the memory card on the computer (Removable Disk), if it lets you, you are all set.
#19 Copy the PG41IMG.zip file onto your new Goldcard.
#20 Put the Goldcard into your Flyer and boot holding the volume down key.
#21 Update the ROM (takes about 5-10 minutes) You should now have SW Version 2.00.405.3
#22 Go to globaltron's thread and follow the instructions outlined by globaltron.
You should now have a S-OFF device with CWM and Root
Enjoy

I am a bit confuse on step1&2. Why do we need to connect flyer to pc while downloading the rom?
Questions
Really appreciate this post.
I have been thinking to get the HTC Flyer for ages. Seeing with the S off and Perm Rooting plus using the Stock Phone ROM (only Bluetooth) I am tempted to get soon.
However, I read some parts : Whatsapp is not working after S-off and perm root. Apparently it does not recognise the IMEI at all.
see relevant post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197021
which means if I guess it correctly, after s-off and perm root, with includes new ROMs (phone app), normal SMS apply but regards to apps like Whatsapp and Viber may cause issues?
Anyone can verify this? (*Esp S-off users and perm rooters?)
thanks.

This is a completely different issue/question than the original post. Create own thread, or post to the threads discussing Viber and Whatsapp (there are several, I believe).

You don't need to plug it in while downloading the ROM. The reason I say to unplug it is to make sure people don't try to run the ROM update utility with the Flyer attached.

from which you can fastboot boot and/or root your phone with flashrec Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559613 (Please see guide below for this)
Done.
(STEP 2 recovery)
You need to install this recovery first with flashrec instructions below
You can use flashrec to flash the patched recovery, from where you can do all the usual stuff (and even put the old hboot back on if you want!)
Notice:
flashrec is using an exploit that isn't patched yet in the current kernel used by HTC, however if/when HTC patches this, flashrec will stop working.
So for now it's ok but a next version might have patched this, so keep this in mind !
Quick Howto:
1. On your phone, goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this).
4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
flashrec-20090815.apk
Cyanogen’s / Modaco Hero Recovery Image
Update: updated flashrec here
6. Extract the cm-hero-recovery.img out of the MoDaCoPatchedRecovery-1.0.zip and put it somewhere on your computer.
7. Save both the cm-hero-recovery.img and the flashrec-20090815.apk to your computer, then copy them both to your SD card
(do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them in the root of the SD card itself).
8. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
9. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
10. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the flashrec-20090815.apk file and click on it.
If asked, tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
11. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
12. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
sdcard/cm-hero-recovery.img
Then click on the Flash Custom Recovery Image button and wait for it to finish.
13. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on
(keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background).
As long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go and load other ROM/hboot/whatever.
THIS IS OPTIONAL RECOVERY BELOW BETTER OPTIONS BUT YOU NEED THE ABOVE RECOVERY FIRST
I then flashed the new recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3 Great Video guide here http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/

There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-HERO-v1.2.3.img
(STEP 3 INSTALL CUSTOM ROM)
Then i installed the cool modaco custom rom v2.8 to my phone http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...com/292018/xda/

Download the latest one normally on the top to install rename the zip to Update put on root of SD card and boot into recovery and install update.zip option easy as that.
STEP 4 PARTITION SD CARD)
Then finaly i partioned my sd card using the recovery imiage with thease commands directly from the phone in recovery.
I ran the following commands in this order from recvoery mode:
- Wipe data + cache (factory reset)
- Wipe ext partition on SD-card
- Wipe Dalvik-cache on SD-card (NOT on /data !) [email protected] ALWAYS WORK
- Partition SD-card : 500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32
- Convert ext2 to ext3

hi, was following your procedure in order to crezte the Gold Card. Everything goes perfect up to step 20. After I used to flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe; big mistake. after flashing I can't put phone in recovery mode, it showing a triangle with a exclamation mark in the center, also GPS is not existing at all, 3 G network not present. My phone has been bought from Hong Kong.
I was trying to follow the steps to recovery but useless; flashrec-20090815.apk is not working, even the new versions. If someone can help me with some advices, i'm really desperate. thanks
help please!!!!
Hi all. after I create the gold card, see link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...187#post5036187, I RUU my Htc Hero from Hong Kong with SEA: (South East Asia)
RUU_Hero_HTC_Asia_SEA_WWE_2.73.728.5_release_signe d_NoDriver.exe and I'd seen there is no GPS, Market and 3G, than I'd applied another RUU RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.66_WWE_test_signed_NoDri ver.exe and this time I have Market, but still no GPS and 3G. I tried different RUU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622, but no one working, not even the previous two. I tried to use flashrec-20090815.apk in order to flash, but no working. even the new version of flashrec not working. I tried to put in recovery mode holding POWER + HOME button, but after boot is showing a triangle with exclamation mark in the middle. Same is happening if I try to go in recovery mode from ADB (command adb shell reboot recovery). Is somebody so kind to explain me what to do in order to restore my phone at least how it was before, please? My skills in android development are 0. thanks
help please!!!!
so, nobody wants to help me ? i'm really desperate ...........
finally, I made again the gold card, after I re flash with RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe, and works. Than I used flashrec-1.1.3-20091107-2.apk and recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img and I created Backup.img. Tried to put in recovery mode by pressing in the same time Power and Home and I got the following screen:
"reboot system now [Home+Back]
apply sdcard:update.zip [Alt+S]
wipe data/factory reset [Alt+W]"
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
BTW, GPS and 3G still missing from menu. Trying to update with 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-chinese-signed.zip or with 3.0-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip, I got this :
" -- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No signature (663 files)
E:Verification failed

Phone hanging, freezing.... HELPPPPPP please!!!!!!!!
I forgot to mention these details:

Is there anyone here in this forum who has been complimentary to this guide? I ask because I am an organizer of the recognition awards for Achievement in Technical Writing & Guides (to help people use their phones)... And the Android forums are new, and thus there has been very little response to the intention to recognize those who have contributed knowledge, apps, themes, guides to the community.
thank you. see my sig.

Hi, I have the exact same hero as you do (same system etc..). Didn't work with the "RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe"
so am now about to try it with this one:
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
but after reading you post I am a lil weary...
is you hero still not working 100%??
Thx
1. Bricked my rooted G2 with 2.1 rom by interrupting the radio update process
2. Got it back within 5 days repaired in warranty FOC! mainboard replaced.
3. Flashrec backup recovery did not work, so had to go into goldcard method. (2.73.110.26 CL#69351)
4. Update succesfull. I thank you very much for your efforts Even the ugly static G2 T-Mobile screen now says HERO
5. Linda File Manager + FlashREC
6. Backup recovery -> Backup complete
THANKS
I got a Customer Id Error when I try to install either
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed _NoDriver.exe
or
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoD river.exe
I thought the purpose of the GoldCard was to help bypass the ID checking?

It is - the point is that the creation of a goldcard is not an exact science. If your goldcard is not correct, for any reason, it won't work.
There have been many accounts on these forums of people having to try 3 or 4 times (usually using different SD cards) before getting a goldcard that works.

Dave

I got it working on the second attempt. In the tutorial I was reading it advice I use a separate sd card reader when creating the gold card.
On my second attempt I just left the card in the phone the whole time and mounted it through the phone when I needed to perform hex editing on it.
Lovely job, now to choose what custom ROM I shall flash.

Try extracting vending.apk (which is the Android Market) from a ROM zip file, and "adb push" it to your device.
With respect to your rooting issue, take a look at this thread. Chances are you are going to need a goldcard to "downgrade" your ROM before you will be able to root it.

Dave
thanks dave i'll give it all a go.

If you are getting CID errors, you goldcard has not been created properly.
Unfortunately, not every SD card is capable of becoming a goldcard, and if you get a single step wrong it won't work either.
This looks to be a comprehensive guide.

Dave

If you are happy with your set up, you don't need to do anything else.
However, at a minimum I would install a custom recovery image (step IV) as this will give you the ability to make full backups via Nandroid.

Hello guys,
OTA update failed on my hero and I can't do anything right now. I understood from other topics that it's possible to use goldenimage card formatted on one android to use it on another. I don't have GC right now and I'd like to 4 question:
1. Did anybody try to use goldencard on hboot 007?
2. Did anybody try to boot GC (which was created on another phone), on hero?
3. What SD Cards did you use [Stock SanDisk[2GB] or others [Names please]?
4. If second question is true, there is a way to create an image for goldenCard and by thus it'll help to newbies like me to survive first flash. Might anybody who uses linux or winhex may help?
Available SD rippers: WinHEX [Windows] and Linux [HexDump].
Thanks in advance,
MrBora
Download this file: ftp://xda:[email protected]_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
Run it. Once you see the ROM update utility GUI, search c:\users (windows 7) or c:\documents and settings (other versions) for a file called rom.zip.
Rename this file HEROIMG.zip and get it onto your SD card.
I think it's HEROIMG.zip. It might be HEROIMAGE.zip. I'm doing this from memory but I'm pretty sure it's HEROIMG.zip.
Power on the Hero holding the VOLUME DOWN button. It should scan the file and then ask you if you want to update. Say yes. This will restore you back to factory and should be able to go from there.
I tried that and I got incorrect CID
If i'm doing it through Windows i'm getting hero 131 customer ID error
thx
Thats because you need to keep trying the goldcard method..Ihad to make the goldcard 3 or 4 times before it worked, used the standard card that same with the Hero (sandisk)
guys it worked with KingSton 2GB image. I succesfully installed stable image, but i can't now to use fastboot for rooting. Write failed. Is there a way to downgrade hboot? no need. with flashapp it works like a charm.
in any case i'll create an image for goldcard
This is a brief guide to getting S-OFF on the Flyer or view.
These are the devices and HBOOT versions supported
HTC View (express) 1.09.0000 and 1.13.0000
HTC Flyer (flyer) 1.10.0000 and 1.11.0003
If you don't have one of these versions, then see post 2 because the current application will not S-OFF your device as is PERIOD.
Step 1: Read the documentation
Step 2 (Windows): Uninstall HTC Sync and any other sync sotware ( eg Androsync ) that you have been using.
Step 3 (Windows) : Install these fastboot drivers
Step 4: Turn USB debugging ON
Note: The device should be fully booted to android now, do not go to the bootloader or fastboot.
Step 5: Connect the device via USB if not already done.
Step 6: Got to the revolutionary website and select the download for your platform (Windows or Linux ) do not enter anything in the form and do not close the page.
Step 7: Run the application to get your serial number it will be something like HTCXXXXXX
Step 8: Go back to the webpage and enter the details required on the form to get your KEY.
IMPORTANT: If you have a flyer, device is Flyer, if you have a View it is Express
Step 9: Copy and Paste the beta key back to the application and press return. If you don't know how to paste see step 6 here
Step 10: Follow the on screen instructions.
If you see this message:
SUCCESS - Life gave us lemons, we didn't make lemonade!
then S-OFF has been successful, even if CWM then fails.
If you didn't download ClockWorkMod as part of the process or it failed to download, then get it here
To root:
Copy su-3.0-beta4-efgh-signed.zip to your sdcard root
Start clockworkmod recovery (instructions below)
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Then select "Choose zip from sdcard"
Then select "su-3.0-beta4-efgh-signed.zip"
Then select "Yes - install su-3.0-beta4-efgh-signed.zip" to confirm
Then go back
Then reboot.
You're rooted!
If you get an error "Status 0" when installing the SU zip file, immediately retry 99% of the time that works
If you can't get CWM on view to see the su zipfile
Open the lid and put an SD card in your flyer/view. It does open - it's just difficult and there is an SD slot.
Alternatively Follow the instructions here but DO NOT DO STEP 1.
This is a work in progress, and will be updated as and when time permits.
Known working/not working SW versions
This relates to the SW number under settings->about tablet and assumes you have a supported HBOOT
Flyer 32GB 3G:
1.36.1540.32, if 1.48.XXX.X does not work directly: use goldcard procedure below for HBOOT 1.07
2.00.405.3 works.
Flyer 16GB WIFI:
View:
1.22.651.1 confirmed working
Other Flyer HBOOT verions
If you have HBOOT 1.07 see this thread
What can I do next
Enable GSM phone on the Flyer 3G
Install custom ROMS
FAQ
Q. Is the Korean expresskt supported?
A. No, and running revolutionary for US express will not work.
Q. Can I undo S-OFF and return to S-ON?
A. Yes, there is a separate thread for that.
Q. Can I OTA update?
A. In theory an OTA will work if you have a stock recovery, in practice it it#s ot a good idea.
Q. Then how do I update?
A. Simple answer either don't or use custom ROMs.
A. Longer answer, you can extract the updates from an OTA or later ROM and flash it yourself.
Q. Will I lose S-OFF if I RUU or OTA?
A. No
Q. Will I lose root if I update?
A. Possibly, just re-flash it as described in the instructions above.
Q. Is SW version X supported?
A. If it's listed as not working it's not supported otherwise it should work.
Q. When will support for HBOOT X.YY.Z be added?
A. When it's added, if ever, there are no public release schedules nor is asking for ETAs permitted for revolutionary.
Q. My Flyer/View has no SD card slot/Where is the SD card slot?
A. Your Flyer/View DOES have a real SD card slot.
See: View Manual page 88
or Flyer Manual page 10
Q. Why does ClockWorkMod use the external SD card, not the internal EMMC SD card?
A. Becasue the sdcard handling in CWM does things like partitioning and formatting of the SD card. You really don't want to do that with the internal flash memory - it would be very bad if you did.
Nice! Let me know if you want/need any help putting more info together. I am trying to get into development for the US Wifi Flyer.
To start with: SW numbers (versions) are always welcome and whether S-OFF was successful or not.
After I made the S-off, can I flash the phone function ROM?

Sorry no, if revolutionary detects anything other than 1.10.0000 on a flyer or a view with 1.09.0000 or 1.13.0000 it will quit. This is in order to prevent bricking your untested device.

nvm got it. thanks for all your hard work.
I think this is a nice thread with very good instructions. Would you mind if I added this? It may help people that do not have the correct SW number under settings. For instance, I had a Flyer P510e 3G/32GB --- HBOOT: 1.10.000 --- ROM: 1.48.708.3 and I was able to S-OFF via Revolutionary after upgrading the system software.
#22 Go to the first post and follow the instructions outlined by globaltron.
You should now have a S-OFF device with CWM and Root
Enjoy

D'oh fixed
ok so my brother got the flyer off of craigslist or whatever, something along those lines, and the flyer was in good working condition. However my brother wanted to update and root the firmware on it, I don't know what he did wrong but i'm pretty sure he soft bricked it. The phone powers on and either stays at the white HTC screen, or will go to a blank screen after. I can get the device to boot into hboot, but its not recognized by my computer or by adb. I'm trying to revert it to stock, i dont care it its rooted or not, i just dont want an a expensive paperweight.
What do i do to have it running again?

There is a way to put the zip from the ruu on your external sd so that when you boot into bootloader it checks for it and updates that way

Run the RUU executable as you normally would, but don't proceed to the second step i.e. when a second window appears, do nothing. Do not proceed, just ignore it for now, but don't close the window.
•Right-click the Windows Start button and select "Open Window Explorer" option.
••If you use Windows XP
Copy-paste this in the navigation bar:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp\•If you use Windows Vista/7
Press & hold Windows key on the keyboard and then press R (Win key + R). Once the box pops up, copy paste this:
Code:
%temp%•Right click anywhere inside explorer window (not on any folder) and select Sort by then select Date.
•Locate the latest one created (first in the list & it will most likely have random numbers in the name) & open it.
•You will find a second folder with a set of random numbers. Open it, inside you will find a number of files and the rom.zip
•Copy the rom.zip file to another location.
1.Rename the downloaded file PG41IMG.zip
now I believe it is your external sd that it reads from when you go into bootloader which should be easy enough since you can copy it over from pc using sd card reader. If internal I am not sure how you transfer it unless you can unlock again, flash custom recovery, then mount while in recovery to transfer using pc
