Can someone explain this to me?
I've tried two car chargers:
The micro Duracell, output: 5v, 750mA

And none seem to be doing anything. They charge my X1 other phones just fine, even the bluetooth headpiece but not the X10. What gives? Is there a solution?
Really don't want to buy a third usb car charger and I REALLY like the micro format.
Do you figure this charger will work?

The output is 700 mAh which is what the SE plugin charger is at.

Well, I don't know about the one u have posted, but believe it or not, this cheap piece of hardware is working very good for me (damn, can't post link cos I'm a new member... go do dealextreme . com, and search for : "35687". It'll show u the charger I use).
Use it to charge my SE x10i every day to/from work

Its not the amperage thats the problem, the problem is the x10 (kinda). Its set to only charge when the data pins are shorted on USB, i.e. when it's connected to a computer or a 'compatible' charger. All you need to do is short pins 2 and 3 (the middle pins) on the female USB connector on your charger and you're good to go. For me, I just took some solder and spread it across the pins on the outside to short them. This will work for any USB charger regardless of the power output. No worries about damaging your unit, I have been using my car charger with my x10 for months with no problems.

Is there actually any components inside the cigarette lighter plug thats used to charge the XDA in-car?
As i'm getting one of the digitraveler gps receivers, and want to modify the cable to allow me to charge the xda whilst using the gps. The only problem is I don't have an in-car charger for my xda, i do have to spare cigarette lighter plugs though.
Would it be possible to just use one of the plugs and send the + feed to pins 20,21,22 and the - feed to 16,17 & 18 ? as in Yorch's guide (http://www.yorch.net) Or does this thing need resistors and things inside it ??

Swifty, I modified a usb sync/charger with the lighter socket adaptor, just add the wires from the digitraveler to the usb cable, you then end up with sync/charger, car charger and digitraveler y lead/xda charger.
:? Hmmm I think I understand what you mean.. I don't really want to touch the usb cradle i have though, I just want to add the lighter plug onto the gps cable, solely for the purpose of charging when using the GPS in the car.

Swifty, not the cradle, I got a usb sync/charger and a car lighter adaptor from ebay, I modified this instead of trying to add wires to the digitravelers connecter. The thread is under another posting about a cheap gps. Also the cables that come with it need to be modified to work with xda.
Yeh, I understand what your saying, but I'd rather not have to buy a car charger or whatever to then hack it about. Not when I have got several lighter plugs lying around, if I can use one of them... :wink:

OK, if you use a standard plug end, you will blow it, if however you have an old phone charger lead that gives 5volts that should do the trick I think.

The HTC XDA/Qtek must be feeded with 5 V. The current consumption can be as high as 1A when in use and charging internal battery.
I have made my own 5V regulator for car use, but this require some experience in electronics.

I have noticed that when using a car charger that worked on my older htc phone it heats up the jade and then it eventualy locks i have to hit the reset button or pull the battery.
has anyone else found this or know of a way round it, I like my old one as it has about a 2m cable whish reaches exactly where i need it to.
has anyone else seen a car charger like this that works with the jade?

I have a charger from an old O2 phone and it's working fine. I had no problems with car charger so far.
I looked on the mains charger i had with the device and it says output is 5V, I think the car charger is giving out 12V as I think it's just a straight through usb light socket so i wouldn't imagine it's stepping down that much, only problem is i don't like the chargers with curly cables i want a straight cable or a charger that just has a usb socket on it.
any idea where i could find that?
I have another option of adding another lighter socket on the dash of the car near where the phone is but i don't really like drilling holes in the car if i don't have to!
ok a quick google and i have found a 4 usb port 5v car charger so fingers crossed that will sort my problem out.
it's quite cool as it has surge and over load protection for each port so if one shorts out the others carry on working.

Can anyone give me a LINK for a proper car charger, cause on eBay they sell all the mini USB crab which obviously doesn't work!

I've got a couple of micro usb car chargers I bought to charge my old samsungs.... but they dont charge my X10.
I've shorted pins 2 and 3 on one of them( d+ and d-) as per this thread:

but it's still not charging my x10, if anything the battery is being drained quicker when plugged in to the car charger
the label states the output on the charger i have shorted is 4.2- 10v @ 600mA, 750mA max
is there something I am missing?
edit: I've read some of the charging threads and discovered the li-poly battery protection circuit is stopping my cheap chargers from working, so it looks like I need to buy genuine sony (Sony an300), I wonder if this is deliberate on sony's part? I thought the whole point of standardising phone chargers to micro usb - is so that they don't go to waste every time you buy a new phone?
I found that using the original micro USB cable (Or a good quality one) and one of these -> Car USB Outlet works better than buying an adapter with the cable already attached.
Such was the case with my X1 and X2 as well.
These newer gen ones are around 700mA instead of 500mA.

I have one of these from Blue unplugged. go to blueunplugged dot com. in the quickcode type 139166. It is a 'Santok STK Car Charger With 1A USB Port'
I worked on my old X1 and with a micro usb cable it works on my X10 too.
I previously had a different device. It got very hot when I was on the phone and using satnav. This one is great. Its not missed a beat.
I think this is the cable, Quickcode 138344. Please check before purchasing though!

I use my Motorola car charger and it works fine when my phone has some juice left in the battery. the first time I tried to use it the battery was completely flat and the charger would not work well, though

I bought that one, and it doesn't work with my X10. I have tried other USB devices, and the charger works.
After contacting the vendor (e-cell) they are going to send me another unit, free of charges. But I am not sure if it will work, either.

I bought one the other week to try, it doesn't work with the standard SE cable.
The light on the actual plug comes on but nothing indicates it being plugged in on the phone itself.
I've found no 3rd party in-car chargers work with the X10 and after reading all the problems people had here, I just went and bought an official Sony Ericsson one of eBay for £15. Works perfectly
I think you have to have one that has an output of exactly 700 mAp.
I've tested with higher and lower amperage and nothing worked.
I grabbed an SE AN300 off Play.com and it works with no issue. Looks like I made a trouble-free choice.

I'm hoping I can get some help. I have purchased a USB in can charger with two out puts. Now when I plug my ipod in through the USB charger it charges fine. When I plug in the X10 charger it will not charge, I've tried 2 separate USB chargers and 3 different charger cables with no success.
Am I missing somthing here? my ipod works fine which ever fag lighter charger I use but the X10 refuses to charge.

Most devices made now, that are of quality, will not allow you to use third party power adapters. Not exactly how but its something to do with the exact current flowing to the device and/or using resistors in the adapter itself. I'm sure you could duplicate it and modify a cheap one for a dollar or two in parts instead of buying an SE brand

Allow me to Explain
USB charging from computers will work on all devices, this is "as intended". USB charging from a car socket or any other means is "not as intended" and so companies like Sony, Creative, Apple have got wise to the idea and started "blocking" it, they want more revenue from thier own charging devices so have over-ruled the basics of USB and made the device need a sort of "trigger" which is usually a wire that is different in a standard car changing USB dock.
The only way around this is to find a branded car usb charger or a company who knows the method and has added it to their type of USB socket.
So remember it's not mainly to do with amps or the voltage, but the companies themselves that stop you using a standard USB power adapter

Guys I lost my Gear's charger, not the cradle. Until I buy a original charger I will use a secondary charger. But for this I need to know the output of charger. Please, anyone could help me? REGARDS
Given the Gear S w/ cradle only has 300mah + 300mah battery to charge, any cell phone charger with microUSB will work. Even a PC USB port should work. I didn't even bother take the original AC charger out of the box. Using my alarm clock's USB port for charging every day even when it is totally dead without problem. So, anything with a USB port will work. You don't need to buy the original AC adapter.

.....but could you theoretically or actually damage the cradle charger (or less likely i guess, the device itself) if you connected it to a charger with too high an output ?
eg i heard conflicting reports about whether it was safe to use the "wrong" charger for my various MacBooks - these might have anything from 45 - 65 -85w output etc - if i left the proper charger at work could i use any charger lying around at home with the same "magsafe" connecter ?
I was told don't do that versus don't worry the device will only draw the current it needs

No. USB chargers output the same voltage (5V) and varies in current output capability. The adapter won't/can't output more current than the other end (your cradle) requested for. The only time it won't work is if your device need more amperage for charging and the adapter can't supply that much, e.g. a lot of cell phones requires 1000+ ma of amperage for charging but a lot of generic USB chargers can only output 500ma. This results in not able to charge when battery is almost dead.
As mentioned above, the watch has a tiny battery and only requires very little current for charging.
The official AC adapter for watch is labeled 5V 700ma.

The wall wart for the Gear S says 5vdc at 0.7 amps. I have used other chargers though, computer usb comes to mind, just use a usb to micro usb cable.
I have a meter, and can check the pins for power on the cradle, if that would help.

Looking at the pins with them at the bottom of the cradle, micro USB on the right counting 12345
Pin 1 is +5 volts DC
Pin 4 is Negative ground
Pretty darn sure, measured it about 5 times and every other way possible. Same result every time.
If you were looking at the back of the watch then counting the pads 12345
pad 2 is Negative
Pad 5 is 5 volts DC

As this thread helped me when I missed my cradle for charging, I uploaded a photo for clarification.
The pads at the back of the watch are counted 12345 from left to rigth when holding the watch with SAMSUNG bottom side and SIM card slot on top. See attached jpg.
To avoid electrical damage to the watch, I put some transparent tape over the pads first. Then I carefully scratched little holes through the tape for pad 2 and 5.
Then I was able to charge the Gear S just with holding red and black wires from an old cutted USB cable on these pads (black 2 and red 5).
Next step would be to find a clever way for fixing the tiny wires on these micro pad spots while charging.
I tried with a clothespin and it took ages until it finally stayed fixed. Had to take watch out of the wrist band for this.
Fixing with tape didn't work at all.

You guys mention "mini USB" on the charger cable. My Gear Fit2 came with the cradle hard wired and USB plug in. Are there various charge cradle options for the Fit2?
