Wifi tethering, any danger to the phone? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
Next sunday I will take a seven hour train. And in the latest releases of wifi tethering it has come a temperature view of the battery.
What I am asking about is, do I have to watch my phone the hole time for not being overheated? What about when I am charging?
Im at work atm, so have to be short of explonation right now
Thanks
Sent from my Hero using XDA App

I occasionally do this for a hour or two and seems to be fine. Longest I've done it was three hours without any issues. This was using pdanet.

Others already question this. But I think a lot more practical to use the wifi tethering than any other connection type (Bluetooth and wired). However is it possible to have a non-wired connection without heating the phone?
I ask this because the staff of the HTC does not support this.
Thanks in advance

Thanks a lot for the link!
So what they say is that if you wanna tether, use usb? I dont really care whether I use wired or non-wired thering.

Sorry I misunderstood what you were asking. My phone was connected via USB and using PdaNet to connect the laptop to the WiFi. Didn't seem to heat up. I also have a silicon case on the phone.

Since the phone is constantly using both the Wi-Fi and (or) the Mobile Network Connection over hour's. It will get a little hot.
But, you can adjust the clock with "overclock widget" or "setcpu" to a lower value, so it don't uses that much processor power all the time.
The Hero should handle to teeter for some hours, anyway.

**FIXED** Stops charging overheat while tethering

Awesome I found a way to stop making the phone overheat and stop charging while you tether you're gonna need the program nue dynamic clock @ http://www.nuerom.com.
1.when you install it go to settings, system, processor.
2.then go to file configure profiles
3.then file create new profile name it tethering and set all the options to 81mhz. youre done! now wehnever u want to tether set the external power profile to tethering and click save.
Now there is a way to set the phone to this profile whenever you start internet connection sharing but I couldnt quite understand that if u know how post it here
dont forget to set it back when youre done tethering or your phone will be slow
It works! My phone stopped overheating..it just keeps charging, im watching a movie and downloading at the same time..amazing who knew lol i was almost ready to give up on tethering altogether lol..but does this works with GPS and bluetooth? because i find that my phone overheats with the car charger..
Thanks for the tip. Don't want to see any flaming phones out there!

Ewwww ummm for the car charger I find keeping the power saving profile for external power keeps it charging in the car...but if you are playing music bluetooth it will skip or if you are using GPS it MAY lag if you use them both together or worst case stop charging. Sunlight through the windshield can heat the phone too at this point dynamic clock wont help too much if its really hot outside. So as far in the car I would buy the car vent hanger to blow some air over the phone to keep it cool

Thanks, works great for streaming audio into my stereo.
One question, I don't know if I'm dense or its the rom I am using, but I dont have a processor link in my systems file or anywere else I can find, so I just adjust from the clocking program. Am I missing something?
Thanks
PS Energyrom 3.0
thanks it works.
you have to soft rest after to see the profile you just made.
also set the battery and external power to tether. then click save
EDIT: it dosent work. my phone still gets hot and not charging. back to putting my phone by the AC.

make sure your screen is off while you tether, try avoiding talking for a while then tethering that really heats it up, close unnecessary programs, make sure the manual settings arent 528mhz and overide button isnt checked & if that fails the drop the voltages to level 0! it cant possibly overheat after that

You can use psShutXP to turn your screen off and not close out any programs that you have running. I use it all the time and have verified that it wont disconnect when connected with your computer.
Here is the link with more info. I have also included the cab from that post as well.

i'm a power user
i use gps, phone, email, text all day
i'm selling my touch pro because its useless
i cant charge the device because it overheats
the only option i have found is the mugen 3000mah battery
considering my total investment i have decided to go with a car-pc
have more features...more processing power...and certainly no issues like this
i'm really disappointed in the touch pro because of this
i thought all my problems were solved when i upgraded from the mogul
i'm going back to the mogul...its very reliable
i could do everything i needed without basic power problems
yes it lacks ram...but i never had issues which caused such frustration
anyways...sorry to be negative but this is the breaking point for me
i can see the touch pro being useful device...but not for me
i drove 1 hour on the gps and battery was dying...tried charging and it stopped.
i need functionality...
i could use the gps on the mogul for many hours...never having a problem.
the touch pro is unjustified

[Q] Wired tether + router vs wifi tether

I'm moving to a new apartment with a roommate in a few days, and we won't have internet, so I want to share the data connection off of my rooted Atrix to both of our laptops. I could either a: figure out how to set up wifi tethering directly on my phone, or b: wired tether to my computer and then use internet connection sharing to my router (because sadly my laptop wifi card doesn't support internet connection sharing as best as I can figure out).
I'm a little concerned about directly using wifi tethering from my phone though because of the massive heat generated between running both cell and wifi radios hard and having it charging at the same time since it drains battery so fast doing that, but is that really a big deal?
I use the wifi hotspot function with the phone plugged in all the time. If you're really concerned, I would just avoid putting it on carpet or fabric, as that will retain the heat better.
Nah it shouldnt get that hot. If you are that worried buy a laptop cooler and put it on that or get a desk fan
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Alright I'll just do that. I might take off the back cover or something, that would help. Does the phone have any sort of overheating protection built in so I don't have to worry about it?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I'm pretty sure if it gets too hot, it will shut off. Not sure where the threshold is though. I know other android phones do, and my old iPhone did.

Dude why is this phone so crappy?....I've had enough

had this phone for like 17 days now.
Rooted it. Use the wifi teather app alot but thing is it ALWAYS get hot, hot enough to cook eggs. Either that or it just randomly restarts. OR wifi teather lose connection so I have to restart it which is a sign that the phone will restart in a few more minutes....let's see what else, I have a car charger that went for a ATT phone but it works on the Photon thing is it doesn't even charge the phone. Here I am %5 battery left when getting off work so I hop into my car plug the phone up so it appears charging right? but soon as I get home and disconnect the phone it turns off with%0 whatttttt!! and one more thing that crappy keyboard. I hate how they have the "." symbol beside the tab bar, it's too freaking small.
I thought I was getting the good deal here when I gave my wife the Evo and me getting a brand new shinny phone. Ha. I think I'm going to get the 3D
Update#1: wow like 20 mins later and wow the wifi timed out already had to restart it. Yeah this is really making me appreciate the Evo. This is my first Motorola phone by the way.Last.
Update#2: Just found out you can't send SMS messages while you're on the phone. The Evo did it all the time. not MSM messages but plain old text messages........on top of that I called sprint to see about sending me a HTC Evo 3D but they told me I'd have to wait till my 30 days are up(Oct 16) before they can send me a phone out BECAUSE I'm in Alaska(Army) now and of course sprint don't have a walk in store here so I can't send the phone back in to the sprint store I got it from in GA, I'd be without a phone for like 3 weeks. So Sprint high above said they would send me a 3D after my 30 days are up.......Guess it gives me more time to think about all this. I do like the design and the Extra that it's a world phone but meh I guess I want need it unless this phone works over in Afghanistan. hmmmm.
update#3 Scratch the Evo 3D.........because I'm getting the Iphone 4gs. my 30 days will be up oct 16 then sprint will send me a replacement of my choice. $199 iphone 4gs I can't wait!!!. The Photon is great but I just prefer something else with a bit more life too it. Thanks guys.
This might be right, I believe the issue comes at a point where the settings
within the WiFiTeather app for Transmit Power is at %100.
You might want to try to reduce the Transmit power and see if that helps it.
About the issue with car charging, I don't believe your alone on this,
However seeing as though this post lacks detail information regarding Current Running apps,
Services being active like 4g/wifi/BT/GPS and the power/amp going to the phone from the charger,
it might be hard to give you a definitive answer.
I also have had this issue and I can't say that it's only the photon.
All in all good luck and maybe someone here that is more advanced in power consumption will be able to shine light on this.
You won't find a phone that doesn't get really hot when tethering for a good period of time. You cant blame the phone when an accessory that isn't made for it doesn't work with it.. There are many alternative keyboards available if the stock doesn't suit you. Have fun with your 3d.

The phone is plugged up when I run wifi tether. yeah I figured it was the power option under wifi tether settings but didnt want to change anything that would stop wifi tether from working......in the car I have pandora radio playing while charging=no charge. I'm always connected to 3g. pandora/web browser and wifi tether is like the only apps I use all day...
Get the gingerbread keyboard....the stock one isn't that great. And try a different car charger, I have a generic off brand one and I've never had an issue with it working.....
A co-worker had a blackberry microusb charger at work, now A: good news is my photon battery last very very long I can get through my nine hour work day with moderate use and still have < 10%. B: The blackberry charger although plugged in and a gave charging animation, never seem to actually raise the % of power. It may have slowed it but not by a whole lot.

Like xTMFxOffshore said, you can always use gingerbread keyboard or many others. Remember, this is Android not the iPhone, you can use a different keyboard, and a different launcher... Just switch to a new keyboard, (I prefer Smart Keyboard Pro, or A.I.Type Keyboard), and you might enjoy your phone again. If you don't like Motorola's launcher try the ever-so-customizable Go Launcher / Go Launcher Ex, or Launcher Pro, or just look in the Market for more launchers. If you don't Motorola's Dialer, look in the Market for a dialer such as Rocket Dialer, or Go Contacts/Go Contacts Ex. Same applies for Browser (I like Dolphin HD Browser personally), SMS application (I like GoSMS personally), Camera application (I like the stock Camera app personally), and much more. Look in the Market. Themes for Launchers, some SMS apps, some Dialers, (both such as GoSMS/GoContacts), set the tone for the application, and make it more enjoyable.
I had the same experience with the charger, except it was a home charger. Try buying on Amazon.com, Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter micro-USB Charger and have a new car charger that works.
As for wifi tethering, lilrepo and Acvice already addressed that above. Try the Wifi Tether 3.1, beta6 app, found on the website.
Now if you follow our tips, you can fall in love with the Photon all over again.
As for the random restarts, you may have a loose battery, call Motorola and explain that to them, and for motivation tell them about the charger, (you may have to say it won't charge), and remind them that you are covered by a 1 year warranty for all parts and accessories. They will ask for your serial number/IMEI found in the About section of your phone, and send one to your home address. If you get a new battery, break it in by first draining it until your phone shuts off, charging it to 100% while off, repeat those steps again, and it will be "broken in."
Another possibility for the random restarts, is overheat protection. Your Photon will turn off / restart to prevent overheat, or when the processor gets overloaded. Try not to charge your phone while using the tether app, as that makes it hotter.
One more tip: to keep and maintain a healthy battery on all phones, Once A Month: Drain your battery until the phone shuts off, then charge it to 100% while off.
Also remember, this phone is the best in signal and call clarity.
Remember to update your PRL once a month, to get better service.
Good luck, I hope I helped! Looking forward towards your reply.
PS- You may have a faulty phone, the first couple batches of Photons were kinda iffy. Go to your point of purchase or call/email them, and you may get a free replacement. If all else fails, contact Motorola.

The only BIG issue I had was the silent calls but hey now thats fixed other than that hmmm.... its not .2 inches bigger and it doesn't have a Samoled+ screen oh and seriously I miss the notification toggles other than that the phone has been great.
Does seem however your phone is faulty out of the many people here only a few have real issues with the phone

Came from a BB 9650. I had an XPERT and hated it.
Got the Photon and had the same issues you have.
After the updates it was much better but still getting hot. I finally exchanged it and now running the same apps no more heat issues.
I had a problem with entering TXT or dialing and that was an app crashing the phone. Not sure what app but I went back to bare minimum including a fair number of apps and an exchange email client and no more issues.
I think you need to exchange the phone before you make a final decision.
My last 4 phones (Tilt, Fuze, Evo and Mopho) all get hot tethering, you are, more or less, draining the battery at a high rate of speed!. 2nd, there are a MILLION different options for another keybord, use one of the suggestions here or search until you find one YOU like. As far as restarts, one, you rooted it, two, its possible you have a broken phone?
Lastly (and trust me, I learned the HARD way!) Not all chargers are alike!! A friend of mine quit and left his BB charger and I figured I would use it for Evo. I could use that thing till the cows came home before I got maybe 30 or 40%? Even though the spec's looked the same, my chargers worked. Ended up using BB charger for bluetooth.
i would have to agree with everyone as well, my OG droid would get so hot i could barely even touch it, after about 15 minutes of WIFI tethering the battery would hit the 60c range and shortly turn off, even look at dedicated WIFI hotspots that are designed to be used constantly they get just as hot ( i had a mifi from Verizon, and i have a sprint 4g hotspot for work both get very hot)my mifi would slow to a crawwwwwl after about 6 hours of use till it cooled down. this is going to happen anytime you stick something like wifi in such a small form factor feel your wifi router at home its hot too and it at least has some notches for passive cooling. the fact of the matter is that all phones were not designed to do this long term. enjoy your 3d as its going to be the same deal for you.

Love the MoPho signature, that's bang'n! Also, I'm getting this kit on Thursday. I'm excited. I hear the radio is exceptional and being blanketed in 4G like I am, it would be nice to pull a consistent 12Mbps. I can pull 8Mbps consistently with the OG Epic 4G so, hopefully this is even better!

Thanks, it's custom made by myself... If you want something like this, PM me and I can work on something of your design... (when I get home.)
As for the 4G, Sprint is working hard with LightSquared on new 4G LTE, this may work with our phones, many users say no, but I've spoken to Motorola & Sprint Reps, and they have all said yes.
The radios are great! Call quality is superb! Motorola is best with these radio chips. We are packing a Tegra 2 dual core processor.

My EVO 4G would get very hot after tethering for some time, it's gonna happen no matter what phone you get since (as said before) you're draining the battery at a high rate.
There are tons of keyboards on the Android Market, you just need to find the one you like best. I personally use Thumb Keyboard.
My HTC Evo used to cook my eggs when I would tether. It's just one of those things that come along with tethering. This phone does has it's flaws but crappy, I think not.

Don't do it man I came from the evo3d to the photon. The evo3d gets hot just from internet browsing and phone calls alone and don't get me started on how it gets when you use GPS the only things that the evo3d has on the photon is sense 3.0 and more custom roms and kernels photon has better signal, call quality, wayyyyy louder speaker, stock battery life and camera. This is android. remember you can change damn near anything on ur phone that you don't like

The only problem I have with the new EVO is it will disconnect from WIFI every few hours forcing me to turn WIFI on and then off again. Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

i personally haven't had this problem, but you are not alone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671744
everyone is complaining about disconnect/reconnect there.
Yes.
Sometimes it's fine sometimes it's not.
I left in the car came back and it didn't reconnect to WIFI on it's own.
Even if I did a WIFI scan it would not reconnect.
Toggled WIFI and it reconnected fine.
FYI, I am rooted.
I have that problem...have had to reconnect 3 times today. No way to tell if you're disconnected either (besides not being able to hit websites, email, play store, etc).
I've had this happen to me a few times. Even with 3g actually. Anyone else experiencing 3g disconnects/reconnects?
Sent from my E4GLTE on XDA.
so, finally this is happening to me this morning, after 2 days of rock solid wifi. this morning I noticed when I turn screen on, wifi was off but connected itself real quick as I was unlocking it. I know it was disconnected because then I got 2 emails and gtalk messages that SHOULD HAVE come trough and notified me half hour prior.
I've been messing with the wifi sleep and power settings ever since, sending myself chat requests to test. it seems 20 minutes is the cutoff time before wifi drops to one bar or disconnects. this is a problem as chat messages should be pushed instantly, not when it gets around to reconnecting itself.
I've tried all different "yes no"options under keep wifi awake, power, etc etc and it seems 20 minutes either disconnects wifi or goes into some low-power wifi that is too weak to get push notifications. it seems to me it checks once every half hour for notifications if "never keep wifi from sleeping" is checked. again, this is a HUGE problem for things like chat programs, fring, anything that uses internet to communicate and not the 3g network.
again,I wasn't having thus problem for the last 2 days till I woke up this morning. This phone isn't getting secret background updates is it?? it still would need to tell me it downloaded and ask if I want to install, right??
me thinks this has to do with network scanning, for lte, as there is no connect or stay connected options for lte,I assume its gonna auto connect and disconnect to save battery like the thunderbolt did. I think its auto low-powering the wireless chip too except 3g in the same manner, unless never disconnect wifi during sleep is checked, and then it just turns it on and off. well,I have one of those weak internal-antenna routers so when it goes low-power, it can't stay connected of or moves or someone walks between me and the router. its a big problem to get chat notifications and Skype calls half hour later than they were sent because my phone is in done kind of auto-power-saving mode. I've spent the last 4 hours messing with this issue.
someone help!!
This morning my WiFi was connected without having to turn WiFi off/on again. I checked the other thread mentioned and my 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' option is already set to 'Always'. I haven't rooted my phone yet so everything is stock.
For me it will show WiFi at the top as if it is connected but I try to do anything online and it won't work till I turn it off/on again. At that point I will receive any old notifications too.
I know for sure it's not my router because my Galaxy Tab continues to work just fine. I also have 3 computers connected to the WiFi with no issues.
Going to try a few more things and fiddle with the 'Best Wi-Fi Performance' option as well even though my signal shows full.
HTC!!!!! its always two steps forward, one step back!! something happened to my phone overnight because now connectivity is just jacked after the phone goes into sleep mode. no new apps installed
its true! the one X forums have way more relevant info than the evo forums have. they have a fix for this, but you have to be rooted. i also found this, which works for our evo:

How to access the hidden power save menu
Mine seems to not be staying connected when I let the phone sleep for a while. No problems while I am using it or signal dumping just when it's sleeping. I have my settings set to never. Annoying, hopefully fixed with a software update.
After setting the best wifi performance option on it seems that my notifications and wifi work better. Not sure how much this drains the battery though since I am at my desk with it charging most the time.

I've had this happen to me a few times. Even with 3g actually. Anyone else experiencing 3g disconnects/reconnects?

This started happening to me yesterday, as well as the phone rebooting when it attempts to connect to Veriz -- err, roaming data. I've also had the issue where I had to toggle WiFi to get it to connect to an AP again; these issues used to happen to my OG EVO way back when, so this has to be some sloppy software change management on HTC's part. My EVO's going back to Sprint; I don't pay to beta test.
I already posted in the other thread, but will say this.
Please call sprint and voice your issue. If/when they have enough complaints, someone at htc will look into it and it will hopefully be part of the next update.
Btw, I think one of the triggers is no wifi activity. If you're getting push email every 45-60 min, then wifi remains on. If not, then it shuts off after about an hour.
The hidden power settings applies only to when the battery is low (25 or 15% remaining). Either way, it doesn't fix the problem.
Notch another one with this issue.
I had the issue even when I turned on my phone for the first time. I connected to the wifi during setup and couldn't activate my dropbox because of lack of connection.
Once I got through setup, I turned off wifi, turned it on and it worked again.
But there has been a few other times, especially when I first enter a wifi spot, I need to turn off and turn on.
It is quite annoying. And like somebody else said, there is no way of knowing this until you try something.
this seriously is a huge problem. google voice calls don't come through, emails don't come, anything internet connection. once you on off it,I had 8 missed calls, ten work emails, etc etc. plus if it thinks its connected, shows the wifi bar, but not actually connected, it fubars your 3g data connection for a few minutes trying to connect to something. I am furious about this as I didn't have this problem my first two days with this beautiful phone. now I'm seeing the ugly side, and I don't like it. and I'm not rooted yet so I can't fix it!!!!
the google voice phone calls do NOT come through, and this is a major major problem. wtf was htc thinking??
I wonder if a suitable work around might be to use some wifi keep alive widget running that pings the router every 30-60 minutes...?
I'm not sure, someone more knowledgeable will have to let us know. I imagine it won't without being a huge battery drain. shouldn't auto sync do that anyway? I'll look and try later tonight if don't hear from any experts
I'm not sure what autosync is? I use k9 mail setup with imap/push.

[Q] Tethering Help! Plugged in, Still uses battery!

Guys does anyone have any tethering solutions for this phone. I've tried using the built in tethering with a widget that bypasses the subscription check, but if i plug the phone directly into a wall outlet using the correct Samsung charger, it STILL uses about 10% battery per hour. i knew going into this that the battery would be worse than my Note 2, but that's just not right, How can it use battery if it's plugged into a wall outlet. I don't have internet at home and use tethering on an unlimited plan, so I HAVE to have tethering but i simply cannot use it if I can't find a solution, and will have to return the device.
The battery isn't bad on this phone unless I tether, It will easily last all day using regualr apps, but i bet it wouldnt last an hour if i tether. I don't mind plugging it in to use tethering, but 10% loss every hour while plugged in, is not ok. Does anyone have any thoughts?
I have always used Trev-Es tethering on other devices and it works great but I can't seem to get it going on this.
Any help is truly appreciated, because I love the design of this phone and truly want to like it, but right now, I hate it.
I tether and don't have this issue. But I use the stock tether. I don't use any apps. I don't think there are random disconnects or radio drops to where you need treve mod on the s4. At least I haven't experienced this yet.

hmmm
ok i'm not sure what the deal was. I reverted back to stock. It is now charging normally whilst tethering. Also most of the lagging issues I had are now gone. it's still not buttery, but i guess thats TW for ya. much better device now. Thanks
