Hmm, at least "important update" explains that it's not vnc.
Got to take a closer look at it.
Open androidVNC from your android programs menu.

No he seems to set up VNC server on he's debian on phone and then connect to it from VNC client on he's Android OS.
Just a trick so he doesn't need any special drivers to use debian GUI on he's mobile phone.
Anyway, to install debian shell you need to have firmware that supports LOOP features. I'm not sure if I want to switch amon_ra.
Could anyone recommend such a firmware for HTC Hero?
Try linux img. You will need loop module
Got shell finally working

I wonder how I can upgrade my x10 mini pro to android 2.1 from my linux pc. I don't have any windows box at all. I'm looking for somthing like htc-flasher, but for x10.

Can you elaborate on how you did this? Because it wasn't possbile for me in VirtualBox, due to the fact that it didn't keep the USB connection.
I’m guessing he is using the non-free version of virualbox with usb support. I don't have a windows cd, so that’s no option.
Maybe the java tool posted in this thread forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826455 can be used on linux after some modifications?
Yes, that was a must.
To keep the USB connection you have to add it as a filter in the settings tab:
Without starting the virtual machine, connect the phone and go to settings > usb, select to add a filter and select the phone. I think that should work for PC Companion. If you plan to update with seus the usb device is a different one, so you should put the phone in flash mode and add the filter for the corresponding device. After the update, the name of the devices will change again, so you need to add new filters again.
Btw, I wasn't able to root through Virtualbox using Superoneclickroot but I think it was because I didn't stop PC Companion properly...

Yes, you also need usb support.
If you don't have any windows at all maybe you could try flashtools in wine...

This morning I had acces to a computer with windows, and I tried to root using Superoneclickroot and I ended up having the same problem as with Virtualbox (the program was running but it was stuck at a loop), but this time I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del > Manage tasks > Finish PcComapnion, and it automatically rooted. I think If I had done the same before It would have worked...
rooting the phone with linux works like a charm... you need the sdk from h t t p : / / developer.android.com/sdk/index.html (sorry i can't post correct links)... i haven't tried flashing it yet because i'm waiting for the official update in switzerland

exactly... as soon as i have 2.1 i'll post what method i used
This is driving me crazy. I am also trying to install the 2.1 update with virtual box (non-free 3.2.10) on Mini Pro.
I am unable to get a proper USB connection to the device although it shows in the filters settings when I boot the VM it remains greyed out.
Can anybody else report success?
Sony Ericsson deserve a big slap for this.
Update: Sorry to solve my own problem, but isn't this so often the way after you ask for help:
I had to add my user to the vboxusers group, after which the usb connection worked fine.

adb works great in Linux, both for 1.6 and 2.1, but the problem is there are no flashing tools available to update.
As for rooting the phone, the program I used in 2.1 (superoneclick) seems to be a gui for some batch process in adb, hence maybe reproducing all this steps in adbshell (pushing the necesasary files, running rageagaintshecage, getting the mountpath...) one could root the phone the same way...
It looks like the superoneclick author will add linux support in the next release.

to bad the USBFlash.dll is from sony ericsson. we'll never know what the library does.

Good, I hadn't seen that before. And well, looks like it's already supported. I just installed it,
you have to run the .exe file through mono. I tried and looks like working correctly, it detects the phone... but mine is already rooted so I'm not sure...

ADB is just a binary file, you open terminal in same directory as adb ./adb shell
I keep the binary file on my desktop, then just right click desktop select open terminal here, then type ./adb shell

This is what I used a while back to get me up and running on my Ubuntu setup when I was using the Evo4g. I was new to Ubuntu at the time, so this guide was very helpful for me. Step 6 is important, because setting ADB in the PATH will allow you to execute adb commands from any directory. You won't need to cd to the directory where your adb drivers are (most likely the platform-tools folder)
http://imransarwar.com/index.php/how-to-install-adb-on-ubuntu-step-by-step-guide/
Here is another guide written by MisFit for ADB on Ubuntu. I'm not sur which flavor of Linux you're running, but if it's Ubuntu these tutorials should be helpful to you. After I started using the Evo3d, I had to do something very similar to this guide. ADB always worked fine with my Evo4g on Ubuntu, but when I started using the Evo3d, I would get "no permissions ?????????" or something to that nature. Following this guide should fix that. Good luck getting it going, shouldn't be too bad.

Ha, yea. I didn't find it too difficult, and as I said, was a noob at Ubuntu when I did that. Surely there's a quicker way to do it. But I was able to do it with no experience with Ubuntu at all, just followed what was written.
Thank u i will try it when I get home. Thanks for your help

Understood. And yup, I know I'm a noob at Ubuntu and other Linux based stuff. I used Windows my entire life until a few months ago, so I'm learning it slowly. Surely one day I'll also be building my own Linux systems.
i need to install a terminal program on my PC and tweak my android phone through it. i'm rooted. how do i do this and what programs do i need to download?
you dont need any downloads or at least not for easy tweaking...just type cmd or terminal emulator on your pc search and youll find it and you will need mostly the android sdk(found on the google home page) and to do some ubuntu codes you can download cywin...if you really want to dev well do a virtualbox with ubuntu on it....you can find good howto's on this page: freeyourandroid.com

Go HERE to find instructions for installing Windows XP on an Android tablet. Installing Windows 95 (as shown in the YouTube video you pointed to) on an Android tablet will require the same steps. I used the instructions to install TinyXP (a small-footprint version of Windows XP) on my Sony Tablet S and it successfully ran; however, it ran extremely slow, which was expected seeing how all Android tablets have limited CPU and memory resources and the Android OS was not created for running other OSes in an emulator or virtual machine. Good luck.

I do not believe you would have success running Ubuntu on Bochs for Android. I believe you would have better luck with Puppy Linux. However, take into consideration I am speaking from having no experience running either of those distros on Bochs for Android. AntiBillOS compiled a version of Linux specifically for Bochs for Android. You can find AntiBillOS's posting about it HERE.
Thanks for your help.

If you want to run Ubuntu, you're better off using Complete Linux Installer from the Play Store to run Ubuntu as a chroot environment. It's similar to emulation, but possibly a little faster than Bochs or QEMU. It's also vastly easier to install since there are already custom-built images included in the app.
is there a way to Run Ubuntu or Windows 8 on Dell Venue 7?
can the dell venue be rooted?
No, you can't run ubuntu, yes you can root the device

I have the same problem and found partial workaround (root required).
Saved Wifi networks and their passwords are stored as plain text in file /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
When I opened this file for the first time, I have noticed much duplicates of string "ctrl_interface=wlan0" with no line breaks.
I tried to delete duplicates and add information about wifi networks (I got the format from my other android device).
Reboot. And it works! Stored using this way networks not cleared after reboot.
Here is an example for secured WPA2 secured network:
network={
ssid="enter_wifi_name_here"
psk="enter_password_here_or_remove_keyvalue_for_nonsecured_network"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
priority=1
}
Not easy way, but better than nothing.
cant find it the right one and cant edit the file, Need more help
