HD2 Alt-Tab - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I've searched for a while to find a simple Alt-Tab alternative for HD2.
I've found various .cabs, but none seem quite right.
There's the 'Alttab' cab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357227&page=2
But for the life of me I just can't seem to assign it to a button, and even if I did, I think it would just open the .exe file rather than Alt-tab (the thread is pretty old as well).
I would like to use 'Touch X longpress sendkey Alt tab', but I already use that button for screen rotation, which I like.
The Rom I use has a dropdown TaskBar at the top, which allows me to switch inbetween open programs, so I have a workaround, I was just wondering if there was a cab that allowed for the classic Onscreen Windows Alt-tab functionality. Or if someone could confirm that the 'Alttab' .exe actually works on a HD2 and it's just my implementation that is wrong.
Thanks in advance!

was going to say that the Touch X longpress is fantastic at what you want. i find it indispensable. i suppose you could always cook up your own action screen?

Hi
I use LMT. it lets you do multiple actions by simply painting a gesture on your screen with single or multi touch. I have double right and left gestures to swap between next and previous apps. Search for LMT in xda hd2 forums. it is an awesome program. give it a try.

Thanks guys for your responses, I'll look into both your ideas.

Tried LMT and can't seem to geet it to work. I launch it, I see LMT in the top left menu bar, but as soon as I touch the screen it disappears. and nothing happens.
Any ideas?

that sounds awesome. how did you manage to configure lmt to switch between previous and next app? which program do you use for app-switching? i use double down to bring up my showroom taskmanager.

I just downloaded Touch x Longpress. Can somebody explain to me how exactly this works?
Thanks

Pretty neat indeed, love the way you can drag and change width of the program buttons. Doesn't seem to be memory hungry orslowing down the system (contrary to others as e.g. Magic Button). Only add ons I would like to see are a battery bar (like in Magic Button) and a home button (again like in Magic Button).
Just my 2 cents...
wow, what a fantastic find! I've been looking for this for a long long time since upgrading to wm6 where magic button no longer is acceptable. I've been using pBar, but this lets me switch programs more easily, since running applications are nicely displayed on the task bar. And the color blends in so well.
I absolutely love this. Bye bye pBar.
Thank you fards, for this 'post of the day'!

Nice find. Thanks
Seems to be very stable
Given up magic button for it. Very nice and very stable so far. High degree of control over what the x button does on apps is great.
I agree, may be it is the final taskmanager
Using Opera, after download when you tap on X it will close opera, even if you sat up OPERA "do not close tapping on X", because the download window isn't seen as part of Opera. The solution is to use personalized settings ALSO for download window

The battery bar is available in the latest version 1.1.7.0.
By now, you must have figured out that the horizontal drag bring you to the home screen, and vertical drag allows you to minimise the current application. In 1.1.7.0, you define what will happen in vertical and horizontal drag. The default setting is to launch the favorite applicatios with the vertical drag, which is a good setting I think.
You can also choose to show the active applications as just an icon, or the old way, which occupies most of the taskbar.
Check out the latest version here http://soft.photoracer.net/docs/wktask_en.html

Any suggestions for Start Menu replacement?

So I've been using QuickMenu for the longest time and I do love it,but I was wondering if there is a better Start Menu replacement that's more finger-friendly.
I have the HTC Touch, so I do realize it comes w/ the larger start menu already., but the program menu, when I choose to run a program, that program menu doesn't close automatically and I find that really annoying.
Plus, I'd like something that looks a lot slicker and utilize the finger gestures betters =D
Have you tried out ScrollLauncher? It's not a start menu replace, but it's a finger friendly program launcher. You just activate it and it lists all your programs on which you can finger flick up and down to see everything. A simple double tap launches the program. Maybe that will help a little.

Well, I'd like to have something to replace the start menu,so it needs to start when I hit the Start Menu icon, and have a similar structure to Quick Menu: Favorite programs, recent programs, Settings, and running programs, etc
Suggestion
Try:

I already said that I have the HTC Touch with that Enlarge Start Menu. What I don't like is that when I go to programs and settings folder, and the folder doesn't automatically close after I choose to run an item from it. Plus, I'd like to have something more configurable and also shows running programs that I can close from there

They aren't finger touch friendly. I'm thinking along the lines of Schap's TouchXperience, but without all his bells and whistles, more focused on replacing the Start Menu, Programs Menu, and Settings menu. Think of what you get in Quick Menu, but more finger friendly

Wisbar Advance 3 has touch friendly features. You just need to turn them on.
You can use a combination of MortButtons and FTouch.

With WisBar Advance, you can start any program when you tap the start menu icon or window title. Or even different ones. E.g., I've configured it so that it shows the Today screen for the "start menu icon" and a MortButtons menu with the window title. And the default menu is invoked by tap&hold on the title, so I've got a backup if a development version of MortButtons hangs...

Right, but Mortbuttons is not the ideal Start menu replacement. You'd have to put in everything you want to show in it, rather than it automatically showing what's under the Start Menu folder in your system. Plus, what about the Control Panel?
Imagine the Wisbar Advance cascading Start Menu but a lot more finger friendly. That's what I'm looking for

You can add both the start menu folder and the control panel as entries (CP requires new beta). So you can do a MortButton menu with your most used apps, and include "usual" start menu and control panel as submenus.
Do you know SKMenu?
I use it for some time and I'm happy with it.
It let you customize the menus, including start menu and control panel, and create other news.
Now, in the last version, it has a full sreen mode.
Diamond oem (on this forum) has packages for smart scroling and gestures
I have noticed considerable ease scroling windows and pushing buttons with my finger.
I still use QuickMenu 2.7 Is there a newer version?
.Big Tabbed Start Menu
- When u click on menu icon a drop down big menu appear separated into 3 parts the first on containing last running Programs
Second one .. contain tabs for programmers folders when user click on any a down menu appear show Program Icons
a third part is for setting contain 3 tabs .. (Personal - System - Connection) When member click on any a menu appear contain the Icons ..somethng like this
I am also looking for something like this. I used wisbar, but since there are no nice VGA skins + it slows down the ppc a lot I am looking for an replacement. Anything new on this?
well all you guys want (as I do) is quickmenu..... with bigger font size.

[APP][UPDATED Updated 26/01/2010] PLToggle - Toggle screen rotation

I made this program in answer to a request in the HD2 General forum, but thought I should post it here.
It's a small app that toggles the display orientation back and forth to the rotation of your choice, without the need for the g-sensor.
The default installation includes the settings screen (available from your start menu), and the application itself, which is available via a long-hold of the call button. When the application is first installed, it defaults to standard landscape (the left of the phone being the bottom), but this can be changed via the settings screen.
BIG THANKS!! to vonski and Eldorado9 for their patience and testing. Thanks guys
Have fun
Note:
Manila doesn't like being forced into landscape, so you can't use this app for that - sorry. It works upside-down, just not sideways. (I've got a HD2 with Sense/Manila 2.5)
Also, I've only tested this on a WVGA device and would like to know how it works on other resolution devices, so please feel free to private message me with any feedback regarding this.
Change details (26/01/2010)
Removed the long_send link that was originally being installed in the Windows folder.
For some reason, when you press the call button to answer a call, it executes the long_send link, despite only being a quick send.
This only happens when there's an incoming call. I've removed this link from the installer, but you still execute the toggle with a long-hold of the call button.
NOTE: The installer will remove the long_send link from your windows folder.
Change details (13/01/2010)
Added the settings screen so there's now only 1 installer, instead of 3.
If you do have the previous version, you can simply delete it from the windows folder, or just leave it and install this one.
It will override the existing version's functionality, despite being able to install it on your storage card now.
Great Job!
John,
Great job and thanks for this. First thing that comes to mind is why did you not combine these into one programme so one can have the option to go left, right or upside down without having to install 3 separate apps?
If its not difficult to do and you can spare the time to do it then I would be very interested in a single combined app that I could run off my quicklinks.
I'm subscribing to this thread to watch developments.
Thanks again.

It actually is 1 program, but the shortcut (long_send) is different in each zip file, and that tells the app which direction to rotate the display.
This started because someone asked for an app that would put their display in landscape and then back again, with a long-hold on the call button. After I'd done that for them, someone else asked for the opposite direction. Whilst doing that I remember that someone had once asked how to change the display to upside-down, so I did that at the same time.
The main idea here is that you pick a default rotation, and then you only have a button press to toggle it on and off. Anything more than that would require a UI and therefore more interaction, and since I'm trying to keep interaction to a minimum, that sort of goes against the principle of it.
I'll have a think about it though, but I think what you're suggesting is a completely different application. I'm not against doing that, but it won't be part of the development of this.
Thanks for the suggestion mate
Ah ok, I see. Also understand the "minimalist" philosophy behind the development.
The way I would use a programme like this would be to have it as a quicklink on my front screen (I tend not to link things to hardware buttons) which would then give me the options of (L)eft, (R)ight or (U)pside Down. If that requires a UI (I guess it does) then don't go to all that trouble.
The problem with me is I don't always rotate my device the same way all the time (I'm weird like that) although upside down is a new one on me (I remember Tubgirl, I think, asking for that).
Cheers anyway.
WB

Just a quick question:
I use the Standard Windows Hardware Button Assignment and mapped my internet browser button with "rotate Screen"...
now here for the question: Is it possible to write that app for other buttons too? 'cause i'd love to have multifunction on my browser button and your app is almost perfect for it^^ short press = Opera, long hold = rotate... that would be SO AWESOME!!!!
btw: your app is great as it is now.... it's just a question^^

I think to do what you've suggested, you'd need something like AEButtons. I've never used it myself, but I believe you can assign different actions for long and short button presses to hardware buttons.

Heh - They're far from honed! If it were a windows (PC) app I was building, I'd have no problems. I'm pretty nifty around windows on a PC, but mobile dev is pretty new to me, so I'm just picking it up as I go along. [Q] want to change the recent app button to task manager

There are 3 buttons at the bottom left, back, home, and recent app.
Is it possible to change the recent app button to open the task manager.

Yeah, thank you!
I really dislike the recent app button. Its so useless n slow.
The task manager is the best way to switch app n close app.
Dear brobot 175
The main request is to have a instant access to the task manager.
which makes closing and switching task very fast and easy.
Eg. Playing angry birds, if wana exit, need to press back, tap the in game menu, exit, exit, a pop up appear, tap yes. Different app will have different method to exit. Very troublesome.
Press and hold the home button to fire up task manager and press the x is much faster and easier.
But its slow to wait, hope there is a faster way for it rather then touch and hold home button.
Pressing the mini tray is even slower so that's not an option.
Able to replace the recent app to task manager is great.
If that's not possible, I have another suggestion.
Is it possible to add a shortcut next to the screen shot button?
As far as i know, the screenshot button is not on stock honeycomb, its and added feature.
Seeing there's space for about 4 more shortcuts, adding a task manager will be super sweet.
What do you think?
i have had a play around a bit but i think the shortcuts for the miniapps are actually embedded in a java file
i cant understand much java so im kinda stuffed
i did however get the wifi on/off buttons to go in the taskbar but thats not really what you were asking i know :L

you manage to put a button on a taskbar to toggle wifi?
thats amazing!!
good luck with your research.
if you can make it an app, that can put shortcuts on the taskbar, it would be amazing, and make it an app in the market.
after closer observation, the taskbar can have at most 6 icons on the bottom left. since when in portrait, the space becomes small and only can accomodate 6.
right now 4 are permanently there. (back, home, recent app, screenshot)
if can add 2 more would be nice, a task manager, and one more say...volume control? (like the one in desktop window, click once and a bar appear for volume control)
ahahaha, i am already dreaming too much.
Aha yeah you are!
Well as I've said before in have no idea how to make a shortcut to taskmanager but the volume may be possible
I have tried making an app imitate the mini calculator so you can launch it from the miniapps bar but it hasn't worked so far :L overall nothing really works right now

Remap App Switch To Menu

So ive been search around for a while now on how to fix this. And to anyone that chimes in and says why do you need the menu button obviously you don't use older apps, the new touch button on the screen is a huge annoyance especially since i've used my phones this way since my first S1. Regardless this is how i want it and so do many other people.
Currently this is only for a rooted phone
I have figured out how to remap the left soft key from the App Switcher/Multi window over to the old style menu key. Instructions for that can be found here
But now i don't have any way of switching to my currently open apps, after remapping the left key, the longpress now takes you to search. and long pressing on the home button also takes you to another variation of the search (both i dont use nor want). I want to be able to remap my left softkey on longpress to open up currently open apps (APP_SWITCH) and it would be nice if long pressing on Home could open the Task Manager as it did on my S3.
As far as i can tell editing of the longpress function is done via a Policy edit. Read about that HERE
Keep in mind that post is from 2014 so i have no idea if the internal code is still being handled the same way, i couldn't even find that file on my S6, but i did find a file called SEPOLICY in my root folder using ROOT EXPLORER. Do any of you know more about this and how I can go about changing this? im sure its a code level adjustment. Thanks
Long-press home button can be controlled without root easily.
Check out this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spada.nowgesturetweaksfree
I use the long-press home to get to my last used app.
I wonder if I can remap my buttons to launch any other apps.. Will have to tinker around a bit.

If you guys use Dropbox, how do you get to the menu with SORT, etc.. without a menu key. This is making me crazy. I'm using nova launcher and there is no floating menu key. ????
The problem is if not every developer uses it, it's inconsistent.
It often helps if the options etc. In apps are on the top, so you don't have to fidget with your phone to reach the top or use two hands.
The menu button on every app is positioned somewhere else, so I find the op wanting it justified.
All in one gestures let's you remap every key, for some odd reason on my s4 I can remap the menu key, but on the S6 for some odd reason the option of the menu key has vanished in the same app:what:
Sent from my SM-G925F using XDA Free mobile app
Hi pal. Hope it helps. Make 254 button remap, then install nova launcher, in tab gestures select long press menu and then recent app. Profit! Now once tapped you have menu button, long pressed - recent apps.
So, i made it, i use it. It works.

Thanks

i saw your page.. there are 2 roms i seem to like, yours and EMPORIA but idk who is best. lol i haven't even bought the phone yet but yea the menu button will be missed for me. what i want in a rom? if its based on stock i like it as close to stock as possible (no bloatware), call recording, if there's an option for increasing camera performance thats awesome, better battery life than stock original. that's it basically. and if i only want to root, how can i change menu longpress? i hered theres like a toolbox root app for galaxy devices...
