[APP][UPDATED Updated 26/01/2010] PLToggle - Toggle screen rotation - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

I made this program in answer to a request in the HD2 General forum, but thought I should post it here.
It's a small app that toggles the display orientation back and forth to the rotation of your choice, without the need for the g-sensor.
The default installation includes the settings screen (available from your start menu), and the application itself, which is available via a long-hold of the call button. When the application is first installed, it defaults to standard landscape (the left of the phone being the bottom), but this can be changed via the settings screen.
BIG THANKS!! to vonski and Eldorado9 for their patience and testing. Thanks guys
Have fun
Note:
Manila doesn't like being forced into landscape, so you can't use this app for that - sorry. It works upside-down, just not sideways. (I've got a HD2 with Sense/Manila 2.5)
Also, I've only tested this on a WVGA device and would like to know how it works on other resolution devices, so please feel free to private message me with any feedback regarding this.
Change details (26/01/2010)
Removed the long_send link that was originally being installed in the Windows folder.
For some reason, when you press the call button to answer a call, it executes the long_send link, despite only being a quick send.
This only happens when there's an incoming call. I've removed this link from the installer, but you still execute the toggle with a long-hold of the call button.
NOTE: The installer will remove the long_send link from your windows folder.
Change details (13/01/2010)
Added the settings screen so there's now only 1 installer, instead of 3.
If you do have the previous version, you can simply delete it from the windows folder, or just leave it and install this one.
It will override the existing version's functionality, despite being able to install it on your storage card now.

Great Job!
John,
Great job and thanks for this. First thing that comes to mind is why did you not combine these into one programme so one can have the option to go left, right or upside down without having to install 3 separate apps?
If its not difficult to do and you can spare the time to do it then I would be very interested in a single combined app that I could run off my quicklinks.
I'm subscribing to this thread to watch developments.
Thanks again.

It actually is 1 program, but the shortcut (long_send) is different in each zip file, and that tells the app which direction to rotate the display.
This started because someone asked for an app that would put their display in landscape and then back again, with a long-hold on the call button. After I'd done that for them, someone else asked for the opposite direction. Whilst doing that I remember that someone had once asked how to change the display to upside-down, so I did that at the same time.
The main idea here is that you pick a default rotation, and then you only have a button press to toggle it on and off. Anything more than that would require a UI and therefore more interaction, and since I'm trying to keep interaction to a minimum, that sort of goes against the principle of it.
I'll have a think about it though, but I think what you're suggesting is a completely different application. I'm not against doing that, but it won't be part of the development of this.
Thanks for the suggestion mate

Ah ok, I see. Also understand the "minimalist" philosophy behind the development.
The way I would use a programme like this would be to have it as a quicklink on my front screen (I tend not to link things to hardware buttons) which would then give me the options of (L)eft, (R)ight or (U)pside Down. If that requires a UI (I guess it does) then don't go to all that trouble.
The problem with me is I don't always rotate my device the same way all the time (I'm weird like that) although upside down is a new one on me (I remember Tubgirl, I think, asking for that).
Cheers anyway.
WB

Very nice....it's much more convenient than using BSBTweaks and shaking it... Thanks!

Just a quick question:
I use the Standard Windows Hardware Button Assignment and mapped my internet browser button with "rotate Screen"...
now here for the question: Is it possible to write that app for other buttons too? 'cause i'd love to have multifunction on my browser button and your app is almost perfect for it^^ short press = Opera, long hold = rotate... that would be SO AWESOME!!!!
btw: your app is great as it is now.... it's just a question^^

I think to do what you've suggested, you'd need something like AEButtons. I've never used it myself, but I believe you can assign different actions for long and short button presses to hardware buttons.
Hope this helps

Thanks thanks thank you very much

another key assignement
is it possible to assignt the exe not to long send button but to windows start button (u know that one in the middle in htc leo-next to home button)
tnx in advance.

You'll need to look at other software for that. Try AEButtons. It's not something I use myself, but I believe it will do what you want.

tnx for the fast replay...actually i started to use that toggle and it works fine with long press key.
eve bsb tweek cant rotate application screen on LEO but that toggle does it.

Version 2 will be coming soon, with a settings screen where you can select an orientation, rather than having 3 different downloads.

Thank you vry much.

I never liked it the way it was, so I've done some work to give you a UI so you can select a rotation style for the application.
Hope this is better for you

Just downloaded and will give it a try in a minute. Sounds like just what the doctor ordered.

Heh - They're far from honed! If it were a windows (PC) app I was building, I'd have no problems. I'm pretty nifty around windows on a PC, but mobile dev is pretty new to me, so I'm just picking it up as I go along. It's always good to find someone asking for something that makes me think "I could do that!"
Cheers for the comments mate - hope you like the new version

[APP] Freda - a new ebook reader

[UPDATE: See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7141176 in this thread for an updated version of the program, with links to new screen shots and documentation]
[UPDATE: See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795753 for the Windows Phone 7 version of this program.]
I've written a program for reading eBooks on Windows Mobile devices. It can read txt, html and (DRM-free) ePub files.
For other formats you can use Calibre to convert them epub.
The program is called 'Freda' - short for 'free reader', since it is free software (both in the sense of 'free beer', as I am not charging for it, and in the sense of 'free speech', as I am licensing my code under the GPL).
It's released now, so please download it and let me have any feeback. (BTW that link points to the WinMo version of Freda; for the Windows Phone 7 version, please go here)
The program uses three third-party libraries, DotNetZipLib, OpenNetCF and the Majestic-12 HTMLParser library; all are licensed on terms permitting their redistribution for commercial and non-commercial purposes. More information is here
Happy reading!
Hi Folks,
It's here: version 1.1 of Freda is now released.
Main new features:
CSS Style sheets are recognised
Controls/gestures can be customised
Line spacing, indent and justification can be customised
Bookmarks and annotations are provided
Dictionary look-up is implemented (using SlovoEd)
See the freda home page for more details, and for download locations.
Any problems or questions, please let me know.
Discussion for this release can be followed from this post on.
Thanks,
Jim
Briljant,
Its the first epub reader that i found on my diamond that is able to render my epub newspaper correctly. Including links and images.
(the standaard is doing a test this week only with an epub version of its newspaper)
A few remarks to help you with the beta version (witch already is a keeper for me)
I had to install freda into main memory for it to start up.
The splash screen seems to to big, the text on it is cut off left and right, i have a vga screen.
The liberary display setting (icons or details) are not saved.
Thanks for the feedback - I'm working on those items now. [fixed in release 1.0]
Thanks,
Jim
Thanks for this program.
I'm a long time reader on PDAs and there was the need for something new.
I've just installed it now and I'll come back with some comments asap.
Looking forward to your feedback. Over at mobileread, I've been getting some feedback that CSS formatting is an important feature, so I'm particularly keen to hear the forum's view on that (because the beta 0.9 version of the program doesn't handle CSS formatting at all).
Cheers,
Jim
this is a really nice app!
I'd like to see an autoscroll in full screen mode if possible, this makes late night reading sessions a bit easier (less chance of being moaned at because of tapping buttons)
I'm not certain how easy it would be to control speed of scrolling on something like my touch HD with virtually no buttons though..
it's replaced mobipocket for me.
Autoscroll speed
Yes I had wondered about implementing autoscroll, but wasn't sure what would be a good mechanism for controlling the speed. I was thinking it would be kind of cool to control it using the acceleromter (gravity sensor) - something like 'tilt more to scoll faster' ... but I've not really throught it through. Ideas welcome.

one option would be to use the volume buttons to speed up and down, but it may not work in the 6.5.x builds as the MS volume control seems to takeover.
accelerometer is an option, but it could be frustrating when you move the device accidentally, unless you set up a control key such as long press talk/send, to enable the gsensor speed control only when the control key is called.

Yep. And also it means that it's less of an issue when the customers complain and ask for their money back .
error on my Opal (QVGA).
my 2 cents after one day.
Reader is good, fast and has a good pagination system.
It's really confortable to swipe up the thumb to change page, nice idea. Sometimes i was mad using mobipoket because when you tap, it may happen that you highlight the text instead of changing page. (i don't use hardware buttons expecially during night)
I'm gonna use this reader from now on I think.
Possible improvements from my point of view:
1) i'd like to have an option that allows auto opening of the last read ebook when opening Freda. Why opening the library every time?
2) It would be good to have a couple of presets regarding the color scheme. Usually I use white backgroung and black text during day and black background and grey/red text during night readings.
3) add the possibility to change page by tapping the screen. So, hardware button, or swipe thumb or tap.
Other less important improvements:
4) i usually read in portrait....but maybe add the possibility to read in landscape would be appreciated.
5) it would be nice to add the possibility to change also backlight power in the point 2) presets. IE: during night time low backlight, black background and gray text.
Finally let me add that the improvements I pointed out should help to make the program better (from my point of view) but Freda is really good already as it is, so don't consider them as a critic.
And congrats for the nice work.

Did you get this error after installing the application onto the Storage Card? Because right now (Beta 0.9 version) that doesn't work. The application has to be in main memory. For version 1.0 I will fix that. [fixed in release 1.0]
If you got the error even though the app was installed in main memory, then it's a problem that I haven't seen before. Normally that error message means that one of the program's DLLs or resource files is missing - and I thought that they were all present and correct in the install package. If you could PM me (or email on jim(at)turnip.demon.co.uk) with a listing/screenshot of all the contents of the \Program Files\Freda folder, I will take a look and see if I can spot the problem.
Thanks for the feedback.

Right now, I need to reserve the 'tap screen' gesture for bringing up the main menu. I guess I could have a mode whereby it's tap-and-hold to bring up the menu, and quick-tap to page forward. I'm a little concerned though that if I have too many different 'command modes' I will end up with something like uBookReader which (though otherwise a fine piece of software) drives me crazy with trying to figure out which mode it is in. Another option would be to reserve tap-near-bottom-of-screen to mean 'page down' and tap-near-top-of-screen to mean scroll up. What do you think?

This should work already - if you can get the device into landscape mode, Freda will work in landscape mode. Freda relies on the operating system to tell it whether to work in landscape or portrait. On my HTC Touch Pro 2 I can switch modes by flipping the keyboard. For devices without a keyboard, you should try the G-Config application - run G-Config and follow the instructions (i.e. switch to Freda and then insert the stylus, then soft reset). Now, when you hold the device in landscape orientation, Freda should switch to landscape mode. You can find G-Config at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487991

Well.....I think that both options are good.....so you should choose the easiest to implement.
I think I would slightly prefer the second one: tap the bottom for one page increase, tap the upper part for one page decrease.

HD2 Alt-Tab

Guys,
I've searched for a while to find a simple Alt-Tab alternative for HD2.
I've found various .cabs, but none seem quite right.
There's the 'Alttab' cab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357227&page=2
But for the life of me I just can't seem to assign it to a button, and even if I did, I think it would just open the .exe file rather than Alt-tab (the thread is pretty old as well).
I would like to use 'Touch X longpress sendkey Alt tab', but I already use that button for screen rotation, which I like.
The Rom I use has a dropdown TaskBar at the top, which allows me to switch inbetween open programs, so I have a workaround, I was just wondering if there was a cab that allowed for the classic Onscreen Windows Alt-tab functionality. Or if someone could confirm that the 'Alttab' .exe actually works on a HD2 and it's just my implementation that is wrong.
Thanks in advance!
Razor
was going to say that the Touch X longpress is fantastic at what you want. i find it indispensable. i suppose you could always cook up your own action screen?

I use LMT. it lets you do multiple actions by simply painting a gesture on your screen with single or multi touch. I have double right and left gestures to swap between next and previous apps. Search for LMT in xda hd2 forums. it is an awesome program. give it a try.

What you're holding is not an iPhone, friend.
So there is no way to change the function of the double tap on the key? Perhaps to something more useful as some probably have no use for the voice command system. Can anyone answer this? And yes I'm sure the op is aware that he or she does not hold an iPhone.
if this is a problem for you, an iphone is the better choice

maybe the iphone it is a better choice for the people who doesnt want to modify their OS and work with a fixed one instead of what their want in personal use.
long press for a ****ty multitask it is not the way to go, and with 3 keys 2 click on home is the faster way until we got a multitask like windows mobile 6.5 with taskfacade or something and a click on notification bar to use.

I'll give you a sensible response, as of yet, you can't change the double tap function on the S2. It may be customized in the future but so far you'll just have to live with the annoying voice control app.

Wow, way to be an ass. Never heard of Quick Desk?
All the multitasking of the iPhone from double tap, but with the option to add widgets as well?
If that's not one upping the iPhone at it's own game then I don't know what is.
I for one know I'd rather have a multi tasking app than a voice search I'll never use.
Anyway, the closest i've found is http://android.modaco.com/content/s...odaco-com/340047/take-control-of-home-button/ but this is only working on KE2 as of the moment.
Guys, what I'd like is a long hold on the BACK button to bring up the multi-task menu, this would feel like less of an effort than the long press on HOME.

Disabling capacitive buttons in HC (Keyboard working NOW) 7/29/11

Ok guys i'm posting this in a new thread (didn't see another in search sorry if i noobed up and missed it) Me and others have been enjoying HC to it's fullest thanks to the awesome work being done by the DEV teams. But I feel it's time to cut ties with those dreaded capacitive buttons that always get in MY way because they are no longer needed in HC.As we all know button Remapper does not work on HC.
Anyways too the good stuff...after digging around a bit i found this file here:
/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl
This file controls the button mapping, all you have to do is edit the top 4 lines and restart Or i'll include the modified file so you can just push it using Root Explorer.
As of now i will no longer be continuing this, as i'm going to be leaveing XDA for some personal reasons ty all for your replies and i will be leaving this download up.
Edited Download....just rename without the .zip ok guys
So far i've tested this on Flashback 5.5 but please leave feedback if it works on Gtabcomb and 1.1 or 1.2 Boot loaders please.

I'm not a coder (at all), but is there a way to turn this into an app so we can easily toggle the buttons on/off? That would be awesome!
My fat fingers thank you
I'd like an auto hide bar "windows" style, maybe unhiding with home or something I don't like to loose screen, 600pix are few enought.

+1
this is a great idea...
well i'm not a coder but yes i agree that this app should be made. <<just a tinkerer.
... my mistake
Worked great in Flashback 6, although I find myself trying to use the hardware buttons from time to time
Do the capacitive buttons still work in recovery? Because I know they're required for CWM and I wouldn't want to do this if it meant giving up CWM for the lame old stock recovery.

To save your pixels and remove honeycomb-statusbar, you can do a force stop of "System UI" from the settings menu, and "system-ui" will automatically restart the status-bar wont reappear (because of an existing bug).
Goto Settings->Applications->ManageApplications->All
Select "System UI"
Force Stop.

anyone verify if this works on gtabcomb yet?
Edit: got root explorer and did it, works great. no more pesky buttons being pushed by accident in the dark, thanks!
Yes so far working on every HC Rom..
Thanks for this info, its really useful.
But I am confused by the following sentence regarding keyboard.

How should I edit that file for keyboard to work? Should I replace word "FOCUS" with "TY botton remepper"? Or should it be "BUTTON_REMAPPER"? I am really not sure whether you mistyped it or what ;-)
Can anyone put this into a flashable zip? I'm not quite sure how to go about edit the file myself.
Thanks.
lol sorry, ya it's worded wierd all you have to do is replace the file with the one i posted...going to be making a flashable one soon so give me a few guys new link will go up.

Debugging
If you experience issues, the best way to help is by reproducing them and then clicking "write to us" - be sure to include a description of your error or we may not read the logs.
This has never been tested on a Tegra 3 device, so I would appreciate some feedback here - is it working!?
Anything to report?
Where can we use it for?
Eh? Im not sure i understand...
Just installed it, amazing app, i was actually looking for something like this yesterday! I wanted a way to lock my screen while watching movies so I wouldn't exit fullscreen mode accidentally.
Thanks!

Great! Any suggestions?
What would be some good other uses for this besides movies?
Downloading now. I imagine this ould be used to block palm detection for drawing like on Sketchbook Pro and the sort. I'll edit this after a review. Thanks for the opportunity.
What? Palm detection? I think it will only work on a few devices...
I wish I could use this for the soft keys on the navigation bar. It would really help cause I'm left handed (I keep hitting the back/home keys by mistake when I'm writing on my Prime).

OK after using it today, i found it pretty straightforward and simple to use.
Found only one small bug, when playing a video, on YouTube, stock player or whatever, if you touch the screen the on-screen controls jump on, you cannot press them, but the UI do popup.
And one suggestion, the resizeable square where you select the zone to be blocked from touches should have at least a small pad or something to drag it. Once the square reaches the borders it gets really hard to pick again.

On the latest ICS update. Go to settings/ASUS customized settings/system bar lock/enable system bar lock. Now you won't hit the home key or any softkey buttons.

I don't think it can be used for that. You could use TouchScreenTune app, paid version can handle palm detection on our device.
This app is for blocking areas of the screen.
