[APP] Freda - a new ebook reader - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

[UPDATE: See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7141176 in this thread for an updated version of the program, with links to new screen shots and documentation]
[UPDATE: See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795753 for the Windows Phone 7 version of this program.]
I've written a program for reading eBooks on Windows Mobile devices. It can read txt, html and (DRM-free) ePub files.
For other formats you can use Calibre to convert them epub.
The program is called 'Freda' - short for 'free reader', since it is free software (both in the sense of 'free beer', as I am not charging for it, and in the sense of 'free speech', as I am licensing my code under the GPL).
It's released now, so please download it and let me have any feeback. (BTW that link points to the WinMo version of Freda; for the Windows Phone 7 version, please go here)
The program uses three third-party libraries, DotNetZipLib, OpenNetCF and the Majestic-12 HTMLParser library; all are licensed on terms permitting their redistribution for commercial and non-commercial purposes. More information is here
Happy reading!

Hi Folks,
It's here: version 1.1 of Freda is now released.
Main new features:
CSS Style sheets are recognised
Controls/gestures can be customised
Line spacing, indent and justification can be customised
Bookmarks and annotations are provided
Dictionary look-up is implemented (using SlovoEd)
See the freda home page for more details, and for download locations.
Any problems or questions, please let me know.
Discussion for this release can be followed from this post on.
Thanks,
Jim

Briljant,
Its the first epub reader that i found on my diamond that is able to render my epub newspaper correctly. Including links and images.
(the standaard is doing a test this week only with an epub version of its newspaper)
A few remarks to help you with the beta version (witch already is a keeper for me)
I had to install freda into main memory for it to start up.
The splash screen seems to to big, the text on it is cut off left and right, i have a vga screen.
The liberary display setting (icons or details) are not saved.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm working on those items now. [fixed in release 1.0]
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for this program.
I'm a long time reader on PDAs and there was the need for something new.
I've just installed it now and I'll come back with some comments asap.

Looking forward to your feedback. Over at mobileread, I've been getting some feedback that CSS formatting is an important feature, so I'm particularly keen to hear the forum's view on that (because the beta 0.9 version of the program doesn't handle CSS formatting at all).
Cheers,
Jim

this is a really nice app!
I'd like to see an autoscroll in full screen mode if possible, this makes late night reading sessions a bit easier (less chance of being moaned at because of tapping buttons)
I'm not certain how easy it would be to control speed of scrolling on something like my touch HD with virtually no buttons though..
it's replaced mobipocket for me.

Autoscroll speed
Yes I had wondered about implementing autoscroll, but wasn't sure what would be a good mechanism for controlling the speed. I was thinking it would be kind of cool to control it using the acceleromter (gravity sensor) - something like 'tilt more to scoll faster' ... but I've not really throught it through. Ideas welcome.

one option would be to use the volume buttons to speed up and down, but it may not work in the 6.5.x builds as the MS volume control seems to takeover.
accelerometer is an option, but it could be frustrating when you move the device accidentally, unless you set up a control key such as long press talk/send, to enable the gsensor speed control only when the control key is called.

Yep. And also it means that it's less of an issue when the customers complain and ask for their money back .

error on my Opal (QVGA).

my 2 cents after one day.
Reader is good, fast and has a good pagination system.
It's really confortable to swipe up the thumb to change page, nice idea. Sometimes i was mad using mobipoket because when you tap, it may happen that you highlight the text instead of changing page. (i don't use hardware buttons expecially during night)
I'm gonna use this reader from now on I think.
Possible improvements from my point of view:
1) i'd like to have an option that allows auto opening of the last read ebook when opening Freda. Why opening the library every time?
2) It would be good to have a couple of presets regarding the color scheme. Usually I use white backgroung and black text during day and black background and grey/red text during night readings.
3) add the possibility to change page by tapping the screen. So, hardware button, or swipe thumb or tap.
Other less important improvements:
4) i usually read in portrait....but maybe add the possibility to read in landscape would be appreciated.
5) it would be nice to add the possibility to change also backlight power in the point 2) presets. IE: during night time low backlight, black background and gray text.
Finally let me add that the improvements I pointed out should help to make the program better (from my point of view) but Freda is really good already as it is, so don't consider them as a critic.
And congrats for the nice work.

Did you get this error after installing the application onto the Storage Card? Because right now (Beta 0.9 version) that doesn't work. The application has to be in main memory. For version 1.0 I will fix that. [fixed in release 1.0]
If you got the error even though the app was installed in main memory, then it's a problem that I haven't seen before. Normally that error message means that one of the program's DLLs or resource files is missing - and I thought that they were all present and correct in the install package. If you could PM me (or email on jim(at)turnip.demon.co.uk) with a listing/screenshot of all the contents of the \Program Files\Freda folder, I will take a look and see if I can spot the problem.
Thanks for the feedback.

makes sense. I don't want to add too many presets as it could get confusing ... but I guess I can come up with something for v1.0

Right now, I need to reserve the 'tap screen' gesture for bringing up the main menu. I guess I could have a mode whereby it's tap-and-hold to bring up the menu, and quick-tap to page forward. I'm a little concerned though that if I have too many different 'command modes' I will end up with something like uBookReader which (though otherwise a fine piece of software) drives me crazy with trying to figure out which mode it is in. Another option would be to reserve tap-near-bottom-of-screen to mean 'page down' and tap-near-top-of-screen to mean scroll up. What do you think?

This should work already - if you can get the device into landscape mode, Freda will work in landscape mode. Freda relies on the operating system to tell it whether to work in landscape or portrait. On my HTC Touch Pro 2 I can switch modes by flipping the keyboard. For devices without a keyboard, you should try the G-Config application - run G-Config and follow the instructions (i.e. switch to Freda and then insert the stylus, then soft reset). Now, when you hold the device in landscape orientation, Freda should switch to landscape mode. You can find G-Config at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487991

Yes, I can understand. Reading a book should be sometihing really smooth and easy.

Well.....I think that both options are good.....so you should choose the easiest to implement.
I think I would slightly prefer the second one: tap the bottom for one page increase, tap the upper part for one page decrease.

In the meantime, if you have a Windows Mobile 6 device you could try the wm6 version. That's a much smaller install (about 1.3 MB). It's at http://www.turnip.demon.co.uk/jim/freda/installWM6/setup.msi

this seems to be a great idea! I copied it to my memory card and couldn't run it cause I don't have .net 3.5.
I'm not interested in installing it cause it would take to much memory for other installs(waiting for a cooked 3.5 rom).
Try making a 2.0 compatible version of technic.exe first.
But this one is a good software to look up to. I use s2u2 as my locker and I miss configurable gestures to unlock.
Organic lock is going to be great! no doubt about it!
looking forward for:
1 - 2.0 compatible technic.exe
2 - full gesture control(i'm guessing this version allows only the click of the "checkpoint" and not the gesture)
3 - locking sequence not explicit(as for only owner knows it.. if not done yet)
Thumbs up to your work!
philocritus,
I didn't quite understand the 3rd point. Could you explain?
Made Technic compatible with .NET CF 2.0. Check new archive.
I can't seem to put in a gesture on my Kaiser. It doesn't detect any strokes of mine unless I make them very quick and very hard and even then, the strokes aren't the ones that I made, they seem pretty arbitrary.
I have to use the "Blind" option....lol

You have to tap the moving "lava" parts when you tap the black area your hit is not registered. So you basically have to tap the lava as it passes your pre-determined point.
I mean when I'm trying to define my gesture.
Excellent!
A new idea...wow!
Tested it out, and it works as it should....though I do have a few suggestions:
1)Instead of the 'lava' theme, try a easier theme....like dragging around a block in a grid would be an easier metaphor...like those picture puzzles!
2)kinda resource-hogging...slim down maybe?
Overall, a 5/5

Thanks Rev! I'll check it out and send you the results
as for the 3rd point I'm talking about having a static image as background and only the user knows where to touch to unlock. any other guy can't unlock it that way(kinda like a organic password)
Nice work.
But here, with lock enabled, phone doesn't ring.
Bye
This didn't work with my touch when I ran organic-panic. I opened that .exe, and my screen froze. I turned off the phone and turned it back on. I finally saw the lava screen and the little pockethal logo on the bottom right but the screen was still frozen. Is this running in DirectDraw? Last time this kind of thing happened is S2U2 v.93 or something and I think it was due to DD.
Interesting new idea. Subscribing to keep an eye on the progress.
ok rev here are the results on my trinity:
organic and organic-panic both run and respond only to the cancel button. couldn't unlock it...
when the display went off it never came back on...
maybe a .net 2.0 problem? or am I getting something wrong?
my perception is that there is no response to touch screen...
See these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375294&highlight=gesture
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362231&highlight=gesture
Others who put some thought and effort into something like this. I think it would be great. I added my ideas in those threads. I still wish it could be a "Gesture 2 Action" module, that could be integrated with S2U2 at some point cuz S2U2 has pretty much all the "locking and unlocking" functions down. It is evolved enough to handle almost all the use cases with notifications, locking buttons, and what not. All we'd be adding is a different "trigger" to initiate the unlock. I'm not saying its easy, but its gotta be easier than trying to redevelop all the code to do all the other functions, when all this is really adding is the gesture part.
Again, MHO.
New version.
0.8 (latest):
- Using GAPI instead of closed PocketHAL libs (so you need gx.dll)
- Removed both locker screens
- Added another unlocker screen (Checkers)
- Works with standard screen locker (and possibly any other, that properly sets lock flag in registry). This needs to be checked with other lockers' authors (in future version).
- Number of points can now be from 5 to 10.
- Installable .cab instead of .zip
See first post for .cab
If you can combine the functionality of S2U2 (notifications, time, now playing, etc)... this would be one of the top 5 best apps for WM6 available, period.
Yes, It does work on my prophet
I ,however, don't how to use even I read the instruction
May you record a live teaching video?
it's locking me all the way..
Very interesting idea that I want to see succeed. Subscribing to monitor progress/development.
WB
New version - 0.8.0.2:
- Slightly different Checkers unlocker
- Accuracy (difficulty) increased
- Device is now automatically locked after soft-reset
It works well on my prophet! However, I dislike it locking instantly on a soft reset, although this is just my preference...

[APP][UPDATED Updated 26/01/2010] PLToggle - Toggle screen rotation

I made this program in answer to a request in the HD2 General forum, but thought I should post it here.
It's a small app that toggles the display orientation back and forth to the rotation of your choice, without the need for the g-sensor.
The default installation includes the settings screen (available from your start menu), and the application itself, which is available via a long-hold of the call button. When the application is first installed, it defaults to standard landscape (the left of the phone being the bottom), but this can be changed via the settings screen.
BIG THANKS!! to vonski and Eldorado9 for their patience and testing. Thanks guys
Have fun
Note:
Manila doesn't like being forced into landscape, so you can't use this app for that - sorry. It works upside-down, just not sideways. (I've got a HD2 with Sense/Manila 2.5)
Also, I've only tested this on a WVGA device and would like to know how it works on other resolution devices, so please feel free to private message me with any feedback regarding this.
Change details (26/01/2010)
Removed the long_send link that was originally being installed in the Windows folder.
For some reason, when you press the call button to answer a call, it executes the long_send link, despite only being a quick send.
This only happens when there's an incoming call. I've removed this link from the installer, but you still execute the toggle with a long-hold of the call button.
NOTE: The installer will remove the long_send link from your windows folder.
Change details (13/01/2010)
Added the settings screen so there's now only 1 installer, instead of 3.
If you do have the previous version, you can simply delete it from the windows folder, or just leave it and install this one.
It will override the existing version's functionality, despite being able to install it on your storage card now.
Great Job!
John,
Great job and thanks for this. First thing that comes to mind is why did you not combine these into one programme so one can have the option to go left, right or upside down without having to install 3 separate apps?
If its not difficult to do and you can spare the time to do it then I would be very interested in a single combined app that I could run off my quicklinks.
I'm subscribing to this thread to watch developments.
Thanks again.

It actually is 1 program, but the shortcut (long_send) is different in each zip file, and that tells the app which direction to rotate the display.
This started because someone asked for an app that would put their display in landscape and then back again, with a long-hold on the call button. After I'd done that for them, someone else asked for the opposite direction. Whilst doing that I remember that someone had once asked how to change the display to upside-down, so I did that at the same time.
The main idea here is that you pick a default rotation, and then you only have a button press to toggle it on and off. Anything more than that would require a UI and therefore more interaction, and since I'm trying to keep interaction to a minimum, that sort of goes against the principle of it.
I'll have a think about it though, but I think what you're suggesting is a completely different application. I'm not against doing that, but it won't be part of the development of this.
Thanks for the suggestion mate
Ah ok, I see. Also understand the "minimalist" philosophy behind the development.
The way I would use a programme like this would be to have it as a quicklink on my front screen (I tend not to link things to hardware buttons) which would then give me the options of (L)eft, (R)ight or (U)pside Down. If that requires a UI (I guess it does) then don't go to all that trouble.
The problem with me is I don't always rotate my device the same way all the time (I'm weird like that) although upside down is a new one on me (I remember Tubgirl, I think, asking for that).
Cheers anyway.
WB
Very nice....it's much more convenient than using BSBTweaks and shaking it... Thanks!
Just a quick question:
I use the Standard Windows Hardware Button Assignment and mapped my internet browser button with "rotate Screen"...
now here for the question: Is it possible to write that app for other buttons too? 'cause i'd love to have multifunction on my browser button and your app is almost perfect for it^^ short press = Opera, long hold = rotate... that would be SO AWESOME!!!!
btw: your app is great as it is now.... it's just a question^^

I think to do what you've suggested, you'd need something like AEButtons. I've never used it myself, but I believe you can assign different actions for long and short button presses to hardware buttons.
Hope this helps

[HOWTO] Use your NC as a secondary PC screen

The Nook is the perfect size for a secondary display for a laptop or desktop pc.
This method creates a virtual display that TeamViewer can attach to and control.
I'm going to use TeamViewer (for simplicity's sake) but you can use VNC if you want also. I am making this guide assuming you are using Windows 7.
Software you will need:
Mirage Virtual Display Driver
TeamViewer for PC and Android
PC
Install both Mirage and TeamViewer. If either of them ask for a restart, then restart.
Right-click on your desktop and choose 'Screen Resolution'.
Click the 'Detect' button.
In the 'Display' drop-down list you should see your virtual display as 'Display device on: VGA'. Select that.
Under 'Multiple Displays' drop-down, choose 'Extend desktop to this display' and click 'Apply'
Under the 'Resolution' drop-down, choose 1024x600 and then click 'OK'.
For 'Orientation' choose either 'Landscape' or 'Portrait' to suit your needs.
To setup TeamViewer follow the steps in this PDF.
NOOK
Install TeamViewer on your NC using the standard or easy (drag-drop-open with file manager) methods.
Launch Teamviewer.
Type your pc's ID and password you setup from the PDF and click 'Connect to Partner'.
After a few moments you should establish a connection. If you get a help screen on connection press close.
On the toolbar on the bottom click on the gear icon. (You may have to click towards the top of the icon, at least on my NC that's how it is)
Under 'Session settings' tap the 'Monitor' pulldown and choose 'Monitor 2'. (It was #2 on my setup yours may be different)
Under 'Quality' I left mine on 'Automatic'.
The 'Back' button wasn't working on mine so just tap your Nook's back button.
That should do it. Now you can drag Twitter, Pandora, Winamp to your NC, add some widgets like cpu usage, or whatever.
Notes:
On my setup when I tried to add th NC as my third screen, Windows wouldn't allow it. I'm sure it has to do with my video card or something.
If you want a cleaner picture try 'Optimize quality' under 'Quality'. Likewise, if you want smoother transitions choose 'Optimize Speed'.
This isn't a hack or anything special but I thought some might be interested.
Thanks for sharing this is completely awesome
Thanks. Nice idea. I rebooted but still only have RCA under display.

RCA, I am assuming, is your main display?
Go to device manager and see if you have 'Mirage Driver' under 'Display Adapters'
If it shows up in device manager try clicking "Detect" when you are in the 'Screen Resolution' window.
The Detect button fixed it. Looks good. Thanks again.
I to be mr 20 questions ( ) but I clicked show remote cursor on the settings, but it only updates the cursor when you click the mouse. Anyway to update it in real time? I also have it on optimize speed.
Cute hack, but I can't imagine anyone doing this on purpose.

This works well when my laptop isn't plugged into my actual monitor but it never gives me the option to select a third monitor. May be helpful at work though, thanks!
Might give this a try just for fun. What I'm really interested in is the opposite. Getting the nook screen on the pc (or projector).

Tried it out, I'm now using iDisplay as a 3rd monitor and with works great. Thanks!
I've tried this on both my home computer and my work computer. Both run Windows 7 x32. The Mirage Driver shows up under Displays in device manager, but when I click the Detect button, all I see is my primary monitor. Any suggestions?

You managed to install it on your nook? I just get "this item is not compatible with your device"
Thanks a lot for posting about this, I tried it and here's a few notes:
-I couldn't get Mirage Virtual Display Driver to really work, it would install but it wouldn't appear when I went to add another display. I ended up not using it at all (see below).
-I was able to add an extra display with my nVidia video card. Basically, I did the following:
--I used the NVIDIA Control Panel to create a 1024x600 60hz custom resolution
--I went to Windows 7's Screen Resolution thing, clicked Detect, clicked on "Another display not detected", clicked "Try to connect anyway on: VGA", clicked Apply, and from there it was simple to choose the 1024x600 resolution and extend my display onto it.
-It was difficult for me to use the other display.
--For one, the refresh rate was quite choppy (even with optimizing for speed enabled), so I would keep overshooting the cursor, moving it back, waiting to see if I was in the right place, and if not, trying to move a bit less in the opposite direction again (sort of like an annoying "Binary Search" hehe).
---I have to wonder if getting the NC to use LAN over USB would improve performance. There's a lot more throughput to be had over USB than WiFi. Any ideas on how to do that?
--For two, and the most annoying part, was that the bottom bar for Teamviewer on my NC took up a lot of screen space. If I maximized a window, I couldn't see the bottom part of it because of the bar.
---I wonder if finding out the exact height of the bar, and subtracting that from the custom resolution, will make a display that floats on top of the bar when viewed in Teamviewer?
For the record, I'm running a rooted NC with the stock rom (no CM7 or anything custom), my PC is running Windows 7 6bit, dunno if any other details matter.
Since this works over WiFi, I'd imagine iDisplay would perform similarly, so I think until they get it to work over USB, I won't buy it (I emailed them a while ago and asked if you established a LAN connection over USB if it would work, and they said no).
Just tried iDisplay and it worked for me, thanks alot!
Don't know how useful it's going to be, but at least it gets bragging rights

This has never been tested on a Tegra 3 device, so I would appreciate some feedback here - is it working!?
Anything to report?
Where can we use it for?
Eh? Im not sure i understand...
Just installed it, amazing app, i was actually looking for something like this yesterday! I wanted a way to lock my screen while watching movies so I wouldn't exit fullscreen mode accidentally.
Thanks!

Great! Any suggestions?
What would be some good other uses for this besides movies?
Downloading now. I imagine this ould be used to block palm detection for drawing like on Sketchbook Pro and the sort. I'll edit this after a review. Thanks for the opportunity.
What? Palm detection? I think it will only work on a few devices...
I wish I could use this for the soft keys on the navigation bar. It would really help cause I'm left handed (I keep hitting the back/home keys by mistake when I'm writing on my Prime).

OK after using it today, i found it pretty straightforward and simple to use.
Found only one small bug, when playing a video, on YouTube, stock player or whatever, if you touch the screen the on-screen controls jump on, you cannot press them, but the UI do popup.
And one suggestion, the resizeable square where you select the zone to be blocked from touches should have at least a small pad or something to drag it. Once the square reaches the borders it gets really hard to pick again.

On the latest ICS update. Go to settings/ASUS customized settings/system bar lock/enable system bar lock. Now you won't hit the home key or any softkey buttons.

I don't think it can be used for that. You could use TouchScreenTune app, paid version can handle palm detection on our device.
This app is for blocking areas of the screen.

What would be the use of that? D:
An app that makes it possible to run mobile webapps full screen, kind of like the way the latest chrome beta can do, but for any site.
An keepass app with synchronization built in, and on top of that an internal Web browser, so you can have actions like "copy password" and "copy username" right there. Kind of the way 7 pass does it (on Windows Phone)
Nanaca crash, a simple flash game where the object is to throw a person as far as you can, kind of like "hit crazy frog" kind of game but a hit more advanced. Requires just one button so that would be perfect for Android smartphones.

Oh that's not what I understood. I guess the idea would work if the processing was quick enough and the picture high resolution enough. But front facing cameras are none of the above.
Thanks for your current suggestions, let me see more !
no more ideas?
I have an App Request too
An On-Screen Floating Object-Oriented Toolbar, with Back, Home, Menu, & Directional keys, + additional keys depending on active screen or current app
including a 'cycle-through elements' button then hit enter on the one you want to activate
things that can be done with your thumb from one small location.
then tap & hold contracts it into a smaller set of buttons
and you can select the number of buttons & their default positions for both the expanded state and the compacted state.
so it could be used to navigate around programs, select different elements, or used as a game controller, or keypad enhancement, or enhanced navigation etc
