Good FTP client/app for HD2? Total Commander FTP 'faulty'? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know of a good FTP client (preferably finger friendly) for the HD2?
I'm only interested in FTP on my home wifi network, if that matters at all.
I used to use PadersyncFTP on my sammy Jet and i really liked how streamlined/basic and relatively finger friendly it was.
Thats only available for Java, Android and maybe Symbian I think.
I tried installing the padersync .jar but the (Java Engine/installer?) thingy just gave me an error and wont install.
Ive been using Total commander with some success, but its not *that* finger friendly and doesnt looks as good as padersync. I could put up with that BUT...
When I transfer a file from Laptop to HD2 or vice versa, The status bar (percentage transfered etc), stays at 0% until the transfer is complete then the status popup just dissapears, so I know its done at least
I can check the transfre speeds etc on the laptops filezilla interface but on the HD2 I have no way of knowing if the transfer is slow due to poor wifi signal etc, and I just cant live with not knowing how long the transfer is going to take (especially on big files).
So.... Does anyone know of a better alternative to Total Commander FTP?
OR.... Does anyone know of a fix for the 'status bar' problem mentioned above?
Any and all suggestions appreciated

Get it from the Marketplace. Free basic or cheap full version. Does a great deal more than FTP as well.

Thanks for the suggestion John....
But Ive already got the Free v1.0 of that remote access app (from the xda market).
Forgive me if im missing something obvious here but doesnt that app only let you access the HD2 file system from any web browser?
I need something which works the oher way i.e. I want to be able to browse and access/copy/edit the files stored on my laptop/notebook using an app on my HD2.
Hope that makes sense and that im not missing a function of the remote access app.
Cheers anyway.

Resco File Explorer has a ftp client built in and in my usage is pretty good. It doesn't have a resume feature or multiple files at once transfer but overall its stable and fast.

cheers, I'll check it out.
Main problem with total commander (for me) is the progress bars during ftp transfer. I could live with the non finger friendly version if the progress bars worked.
Thanks though.

Some new Athena user questions

Hey everyone,
I've been using a WM device for 2 years, a good and old KJAM and now the X7500. As you may have seen in my previous post, I'm going to use the X7500 as a UMPC together with my KJAM. I don't plan to ditch the KJAM, as I'm going to keep using it as my PDA and phone. The main purposes of the X7500 would be browsing (WIFI or HSDPA), watching movies, gaming and maybe some document editing.
I have to say, that I got lost trying searching and reading posts around here, and there seem to be a lot of confusion about many things, so I'm gonna ask some questions that I couldn't find one straight updated answer for. I know that these questions have been asked a lot of times, but as I said, there wasn't any clear answer for them (hopefully there is now).
1. I need a good, fast and reliable WM6/WM6.1 ROM. I don't need many features, just simple and as fast as possible. What do u recommend? By the way, if I flash another ROM will it change my device ID? I have bought a program that is registered to that specific device, and by changing the ID that program won't work.
2. BT mouse. how good does it work with the Athena? Will it slow down the system? Will it work with any program (esp. browsers)? How about connecting a USB mouse through the 4-in-1 cable, would it work?
3. Browser. We have a great device, amazing screen but I feel that no browser is good enough for it. I don't want anything fancy, but I want it to be fast and support tabbed browsing. Opera mini is fast enough, but it lacks an option to browse with XX% zoom out permanently like Opera, Netfront or even IE. All of the above are pretty good by the way, but they are simply too slow. Actually, I don't get that. Why are they so slow browsing with WIFI or 3.5G? Opera mini does the job faster, my desktop with the same connection does it faster, what's causing their lag? I found out that browsing through my desktop with LOGMEIN from the X7500 is even faster (but annoying).
Any browser that will hit the spot? Any way to speed things up?
4. Task manager. I want a program that will give me the multi-tasking capability of a desktop PC without slowing down the device. basically I need instant access to all the open programs in the same way the taskbar works on Windows. If the program will give me the option to choose whether to minimize or close a window, it would be better.
5. Printer. Can I plug a USB printer, or can I use only network/BT printers with the device?
6. Any other tips of-course would me most welcomed.
I hope you had the patience to read all of those questions, and maybe even more patience to answer them. Thanks a lot to everyone around here....
best rom? athena project 3. cannot be beaten. ther's a rule on here where theres no posting of roms allowed except project kitchen. This rom is made by people working all day on it, and a new version is released like every 3 months. because thats how long it takes to make it perfect. Im fairly sure the new one is being released this week. but dont quote me on that.
You named all the browsers anyone would suggest, so I cant really recommend anything.
For taskbar id say use wisbar if you need loads of features and skinnable taskbar along with cascading start menu like real windows, or wktask for just sortof tabbed taskbar. wktask is embedded into the rom I mentioned.
hope this helps

First of all, thanks a lot for your comment. I don't really understand what you mean by no ROM postings allowed around here. If I want a lighter ROM than Athena Project, and afraid to cook myself one, I'm out of luck? nobody can even publish their cooked versions of the AP ROMs?
There is no rule like that at all.
If you decide to cook a ROM, feel free to post it. The Athena Project do some great work, but they don't own these public forums.
i dont want to argue about it , but if that's the case, then why is there only one cooked rom avalable? plus check the sticky called proj ct kitchen to see where i got the impression that you cant.

1) I will suggest PK3.0 as the fastest IMHO, we are waiting the new WM6.1 (4.0 release) The .NET re-designed will improve the speed as is happening in many other ROMs. We are waiting also the results of the Athena Team tuning: wait the WM6.1 may be in the next week.
I have increased the speed using MEMMAID, (www.dinarsoft.com) as mantainance and optimizzation tool. The rom's speed depends only from chef choices for the first start but later is related to many other things. Manteinance is the best way to keep it fast
1b) Device ID changed? may be not, we will see...
2) I use a wired optical mouse and it works just as is supposed to do
3) opera 9.5 is fast, the beta is out and it is finger friendly and fast . Netfront 3.5 is fast too, I chose Opera
4) wktask is part of PK rom, you can download it here http://soft.photoracer.net/docs/wktask_en.html and it does exactly what you need
5) Yes, BT or network, having jetcet print
ROM cooking is free and WELCOMED here!

There are a couple of others floating around if you search hard enough.
But the Athena Project roms are so good, everyone seems to use them.

This is the 6.1 porting from Kaiser I think.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363542
I think a lot of the browser slowness is down to windows mobile itself. Not sure why. Even the Opera Mini Java midlet is faster on the Symbian OS than on Windows Mobile. Netfront and Opera 9.5 are big improvements on what was available last year though, and Opera will no doubt have a few tweaks before its official release. No Flash or Java add-ons though still
Apparently someone has already managed to play youtube with Opera. Not sure if it is true as he has not responded to request for the cab file yet.
edit: This gentleman gave an update. He had earlier managed to make it work by editing the axobjects.ini file to effect the following changes:

He had posted some screen capture of his earlier success, but found that subsequently it stopped working mysteriously. Anyway, he also said that he is sure when FL3 (instead of Flash player 7) is avaialble this would work.
The trouble is, will adobe release a FL3 for winmo platform...
Edit:
The above works. Make sure you have installed flash player 7 and make the above edit to the ini file.

It's very jerky though. Still better off with the flash plugin. There's an application called EMTube on Symbian devices, would be nice to see it on winmo as it allows access to all the youtube Videos at high quality without loading up the browser at all. There's the Vtap application but that always seemed a bit stodgy to me.
On the subject of Fl3.0 you may have a long wait yet - it's still only been integrated into the N95 8gb, don't know what Adobe are playing at with the rollout for this - it was released as a developers' testing package over five months ago, at this rate someone's going to develop a workaround that screws them over: I HOPE AND PRAY!
That's why there was no excitement in my post. It's not really watchable.
I would still prefer to use PIE with TCPMP to download it first then watch it.
Hello,
I have been using the HTC WM6 ROM HERE and its been great. I wanted a basic ROM with no whistles and bows to get used to the device. Mine had the T-Mobile ROM on, nothing wrong with it but the phone dialer and theme are awful in my view. I tried both opera and net 3.5 and both show great promise, but they aren't ready yet. I ended up just getting one of the IE addon's that hanango do, fine for now. interesting to hear about the things you can use through the USB port. Ive been using the universal and stuff like that doesn't work on it. I think I need to go back and read up more!
Take care

Turn your Pocket PC into a

do a google search for 'Turn your Pocket PC into a'
theres actually some pretty cool things you can do. i liked the FTP server. damn easy for transferring files. the iPhone hack was cool for like 5 minutes. theres a bunch of others like:
2 way walkie talkie
Wifi Phone
Universal Remote (effin sweet)
Router (WMWifiRouter - awesome)
www.lifehacker.com has some awesome stuff also. search Pocket PC and you'll get alot of cool little tricks
Wow, guys.... Do I detect subliminal messaging?
nice find. The FTP Server link is pretty Rad. Have you verified that the software will work on WM6/6.1?
Did you try the Universal Remote and get it working? I know a lot of people have been wanting this.
One very simple app that incredibly oddly is missing is a dyndns client for windows mobile.
You'd think this would be one of the first applications, so that you all of the dynamic ip pocket pcs out there could get their own "permanent" address that people could use for FTP, http servers and other reasons. And it was. Some guy churned a little one out back in 2002. But it's now very buggy with WM5 and WM6.
I'm not a programmer, but I think these are extremely small applications that essentially just ping the dyndns.org site every once in a while (or every time their IP address changes) with a code that passes along the current IP address.
Sounds far more simple to make than most Pocket PC apps, but I don't see one anywhere. Another guy was in the process of cranking one out last year, but has since been apparently traveling in India for the last year.
yes ive tested the FTP server, not extensively. it was pretty sweet though.
i used the universal remote alot. it was awesome. you program it by holding the button of a remote down and letting the IR detect the signal, and you can map the command to a button. ive been trying to find one that can detect the 'Unlock' key on my car keys, so if i ever lock my keys in my car i can use my phone to unlock it. haha. that would be killer. works great on a TV though

I could probably do the DynDNS client using .NET, but I wouldn't really be able to test it since I don't have a data plan... but it would probably pull my IP from my Wi-Fi... We'll see if I have time next week to work on one, if I don't forget about it.

Your car most likely uses RF, not infrared. What software are you using to get it to be a universal remote? I tried novii and vito, but neither of them supported the titan's chipset

Unlock your car through a phone line
I just tried this and it really works!
My wife and i were on a call 60 miles apart (she has an alias I have the titan), with her on my speakerphone. I had her press the unlock button on the extra remote and she unlocked then locked my car throught the phone line, no lie try it yourself! Fuggin awesome!!
I searched but could not find the universal remote software you are talking about - any help would be appreciated
(oops, delete this post please)
The best Universal Remote software EVER for windows mobile was called "Nevo"
Not sure if Nevo works on Windows Mobile 5/6, but worth a shot (see attached CAB file)

That is the amazing thing, there is no programs and you just need two phones of any make or model.
The phones transmit the RF signal.
Now what would be great is if we could save the sound of the RF and replay it if we lock ourselves out. After testing, I don't think .wav files or other encryption will work but I will keep trying.

No, by encryption I mean the way that the sound is decoded from the microphone into a file (possibly not the right word).
My thought is that the reason why it won't work to save a .wav file is that there is some way that the RF sound is decoding to the wav file that makes it not work.
thats pretty sweet you were able to do that. i tried that trick on an old LG phone a while back and it didnt work. never tried it on my 6800

Bloomberg application for Windows Mobile

According to many news sites from the summer (like these : http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/jun08/06-10BloombergMobilePR.mspx and http://visualstudiomagazine.com/news/article.aspx?editorialsid=9987), there is apparently a Bloomberg application for windows mobile similar to the iphone app. Yet, I cannot find any place to download this. Does anyone have any information on this?
Seems to be more or less an Asian thing, neverless here the MSN Search results: http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=Bloomberg+"Windows+Mobile"+download&src=IE-SearchBox
still cannot find a download site with that search from msn.com
http://bbmobile.bloomberg.com/winmo.html
yeah ...check out guys with above link ..its 472kb only cab file
Looks like you might need a Bloomberg Professional Account in order to use the Mobile Application.
I installed the .cab file on my phone, (then registered on bloomberg via the normal bloomberg website using my pc), but cannot login via the app on my mobile. It does not recognize my login name and I cannot register via the mobile...Any ideas???
Winmo is losing out big time.

Indeed, there is a bloomberg app for winmo, but it is not free. the site to download is http://bbmobile.bloomberg.com/winmo.html , but you got to register to use it. The normal account you registered cannot be use on the bloomberg winmo app. To use it, you need to call up to bloomberg and sign up a "bloomberg anywhere" account. I did call up for the same issue. to sign up, it will cost thousand per month, while iphone is giving it for free. Even Big Players such as Yahoo and Autodesk went over to iPhone.
Now u see the reason for iphone wave. If this continue, iPhone will monopolise the smart phone market. Some ppl like me, thought that Blackstone is a potential iPhone killer. After get the blankstone, I will say blankstone is good, BUT it is nowhere close to what iPhone have to offer. Some even think that Palm Pre could be the next iPhone killer. But after the review, I think not.
My next phone set could be iPhone. Hope Winmo will catch up by then. Good Luck to Winmo user like me. Major thing i still using Blackstone, is GPS and bluetooth. If iPhone can resolve these issue somehow, I dun think any of the other phones can stand before iPhone any more.
Its here! the non-pro version like for the iphone.
Been looking awhile for this, wonder why they are so quiet about it..

Utility Software For the Shift

Hi, I have been using my shift for a week or so now and I have found the 1GB memory to be an issue with lagging screen switches in W7.
One solution I found was to install this free utility called "Minimem" (found here: http://minimem.kerkia.net/Download.aspx)
So far it is working great and my windows (in W7 RC) switch faster, and I can have a few program running.
It's easy to figure out, just install it, started up all your programs, open 'Minimem', then choose all the programs you want managed, choose how often you want to run Minimem in seconds, and what Memory threshold should be exceeded before it takes any action on those programs.
Mid-day update:
I forgot about this, but to stop unnecessary things from opening in Win7, there is another great free utility here: (http://www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup.htm) called "AnVir Task Manager Free"
It lets you choose what to start on start up, plus lets you do a delayed startup of select programs (like Messenger, or other non essential programs on startup)
And I've confirmed that the beta version of Stardock Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) works well (very handy for this screen)
I hope this helps those wanting to speed up W7 even more!
If anyone else knows of other great free utilities I would love to know!
thanks for all your great posts, I like the Fences very much.
As for the RAM optimization, I'm using MemTurbo (not a Freeware) and it's working great. I'll try later your suggested app.
Maximize Your Shift
I'm a business user of the Shift, that's why I bought it. I needed mobility, practicality, and ultimate portability. Here are some things I have been researching on how to make the most of your shift.
While the developers are working hard at expanding the features of WiFi/SD/BT, here are some cool tricks for your Shift in the meantime:

Get "Windows Live Sync" - It's AWESOME!
Why Email when you can Sync Live?
I hate email, its useless, and outdated. I like live communications.
(I'm always on wifi, and my 3G is there when needed, so this tool is great for file syncing. I have my PC at work that hibernates, and mini PC that acts as a file server that is on 24/7. Then I have my shift. I simply set up the folders I want to sync and this beauty does it all perfectly in the background. ...If you are on a pay as you go data plan, I would suggest setting specific folders in SYNC to "Manual vs. Automatic" to save money or creating a side folder to move things between) ...what really makes this great, is that you can sync files between anyone else with a Windows Live account. (I'm a mobile professional, and this is great for my team to send me docs. They simply save it to a folder, and seconds later I get it!
ONLINE STORAGE
Windows SKY Drive (25 GB of online storage!)
Anywhere access-Get to your online files from home, work, or on the road.
Easy to use-Password-protected-Keep your files to yourself, or share them with anyone you want.
Drag files into your online folders, just like on your PC.
(Who knows, maybe one day it might even be possible for developers to post and manage their ROM updates this way!)
Mid-Day Update:
Okay, this is just Really, really cool!
Gladinet.com lets you link your PC up to all those great online storages you have kicking around! Windows SkyDrive - Google Picasa - Google Docs - Amazon Storage, and a few others, plus some custom settings for obscure locations.
This means you can use your online drive as a drive letter on your Shift!
More to Come!

Well don´t know if its a "new" utility for you guys, but for me it is and works quite fine...
It´s Virtual Clone Drive, a freeware that can be downloaded from http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
It helped me install WIn 7 on my Shift and for now, has eliminated my need for an external CD/DVD drive

New Office App in the works: SoftMaker Office 2012 free beta

Hi guys,
just found this app from a german software dev:
http://www.softmaker.de/ofa.htm
You can download it for free but you have to register with your email to get a licence key, after that its completely usable and free. Right now TextMaker (word), PlanMaker (excel) and Presentations are available.
I just installed it and took a first look at the TextMaker and it really seems better than anything else i used before. It has support for all common text files including .docx. It also seems to support keyboard shortcuts for our dock, for example Ctrl+A to select all text is available, something i always missed in Polaris. Also it has auto syllabification and support for auto correction.
When writing with the dock it seemed to have a little lag while typing though. But its still beta so i guess they figure that out until it gets released. Also it FC's sometimes and has some other bugs still.
Really looks promising though
I can only find Windows, Windows Mobile, and Linux.
I found info on the app, but nowhere to sign up for a beta.

Here we go, guys
http://www.softmaker.de/ofa12betareg.htm
The Presentation app renders PPT files pretty well, the best I have seen on Android.
Going to try this and see if I like it better, thanks.
An office suite with shortcuts similar to office would be great but what I really need is some reference manager software like endnote. Lots of PDF managers out there but nothing to get references formatted into documents.

How about Ctrl-S for save? That is strangely a huge omission from many of the current Android Office suites.
Just signed up for the beta release, got the email with the install links hope to install tonight.
