htc water problem - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi , this is my first post here so be gentle please !
a couple days ago water was accidentally spilled on the back of my htc.
I had a gel cover ( or so i think its called ) so i thought "ok it wont get inside".
when i decided to leave the place and took my htc i realised that some water was inside the phone.I took off the cover plus the battery and i realised that the water was right behind the sim place.i left it there for a day.
Yesterday it was working ok untill after 10-12 hours of use .At that time it started to autorotate and putting speaker on.
Is anything i can do to fix it?As if dissassebling it and cleaning it?Could it be just that?
Im sorry if this is the wrong section and i would like to be notified if i have to move the post somewhere else instead of having it deleted.

Let it dry completly do not switch on for about 24hrs. Then try again, even leave it some where warm where it will dry.

to help with drying put in bag with dry rice or cat litter box stuff (anything very, very absorbent.)

put it in a bag of rice for 24 hrs........ seriously it has worked for me in the past

yes... Disassemble the phone, put the battery and the phone without the cover in a small bag of uncooked rice overnight... Rice absorbs moisture...... Good luck to the recovery of ur hd2!!

f%$k i have the same trouble.
screen i very dark

I would say use rice and not Cat litter. Litter is small like and grainy like sand, more than likely would get into tiny cracks, under buttons and everything. The rice is a good idea. take everything off. back, battery, sim, storage card, let it sit.

Oh ya, pls do not charge your phone for the next 24 hours.. Otherwise if there happens to be any water inside, you're gonna get a smokin phone... =)

[Q] Waterdamage (cup of thee) what to do?

I hope this is the good section in the forum, because it is a general problem i guess?
If not move pleace to good section.
So i have this problem, yesterday i whas with friends,i had my hd2 on the table and i pusht a cup of thee (lucky not hot) over the foon.
It whas laying down with the touchscreen up: phone realy wet goddammit
My first reaction whas remove the battery! i did that in 10 seconds i guess.
I did take a towel, and dryed the most wet from it.
After that i did take a hairblower,on low temp en blowt it for like 10 minutes.
Now my phone is laying down in a box with dry rice in it,it takes the water out of the phone they say,i am not sure.
What can i do else to be sure that there will be no more water inside?
I do not how to open the phone
Thx in advance (srry for not realy good typing english)
the rice works, make sure is under, in the middle of the rice, no battery on the phone, but you can habe the battery in the rice ss well, take the sim and sd our as well, my hd2 got dropped on my pool 6 feet under water, I left it a week in rice and is as good as new.
Thx,i realy hope it works.
Altough i am afraid that it will cause corrosion if i type that good in english.
Is it not better to open it and manually clean after the rice part?
Maybey it can cause problems in the future i am afraid of,the corrosion part
If you can't take it apart, maybe shift it in the rice so if there's any water left it doesn't sit in one spot. Maybe it will leak out of one of the seams.
If you can manage to take it apart, I assume that would be better but of course there are some major risks involved there. I had a Razr go through a complete wash cycle, took it apart and dried it out. It still works, 3 years later.
here you go
videos of disassembly and assembly..

I once dropped my phone (MyTouch 3G) into a big cup of hot coffee...I knew that the residue in there would kill the phone even if I completely dried it. Having nothing else to lose, I got a large cup, filled it with rubbing alcohol and dunked the phone in there for about 10-15 minutes, then did the rice trick for about a week. After that...just to be sure, I put my phone in a small glass dish and placed it in the oven (My oven is gas...and even when off it is still warm inside 90*-95*, not hot...but warm) I left it in the oven overnight.
I didnt trust soaking the battery or putting that in the oven...so that went in the trash (I had a spare)
The phone still works perfect to this day with no buttons sticking or anything. I heard that the alcohol is non-conductive and non-corrosive...plus it helps any remaining water trapped inside evaporate quicker.
maybe something to try if you feel it may be a total loss anyhow.
Thx for the tips and advice guys!
Good news,it works after 24 hours in rice lol.
No damage, everything works 100%,also no damage on the screen.
Hopefully some 1 in the future can use this tips here also
1 thing that i must say,if it happens to someone,DO NOT SHAKE the phone, just take as fast as you can the battery of the phone, dry it with a towel, remove all parts like sim, battey,sd card and put the phone in plenty of rice,i used a kilogram lol.
I did it 24 hours, but on the internet i found out that 72hours is the best.
Jeez i am happy it is still alive
lol nice to hear
most people think that water damages all electronic.. but as you can see...if your fast enough and get the power off (battery or cable), you can save your phone, notebook or whatever in most cases

[Q] Dropped in water, how to fix?

It doesn't work, won't turn on, take out battery and plugged into charger it doesn't turn on.
I'm assuming I need a disassembly guide (looked for and couldn't find) and how to figure out what's broken and where to find parts. btw I live in Australia.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
There is a fix rule when electrical devices come in contact with water, you don't try to power them on and you don't try to charge them!!
The best you could do is to open the phone and let it dry out! leave it drying for days!
I suppose you could use a hair dryer...
If you are lucky it will work..if not you've probaly short circuited it...
btw, here's your guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyT618lVxUs

never ever use a hairdryer!
just put it it down somewhere turn i around every 30 min this way it will not cause any corrosion but yeah when you sleep you cant turn itaround so before you go to bed and then after but keep the water moving it is better!
it sounds not better but it is!
like the guy above me said dont turn it on don't try to charge it
and try it over around 4-7 days
and ofc cross your fingers and pray
let us know how it goes
Fill a cup with Isopropanol Alcohol, and drop the phone in.
Seal the lid.
Leave somewhere for a could hours, shaking around a little every so often to get the fluid into every nook and cranny.
Remove phone and shake out fluid. Leave sitting wrapped in a towel in a warm place (airing cupboard etc) but nowhere too hot.
That SHOULD get all the water out, however you probably already destoyed it by plugging it in.
Put in a jar filled with raw rice or a container containing semi-powdered quicklime it will ofc absorb water and let it dry for 4-5 days and try charging or turning it on...hope my reply ain't too late

Strange but true, you should have DIRECTLY put it in raw rice.
That will absorb the water greatly.
Put ur phone out of water. Dont turn on ur phone. Put ur device in some place by about 1 day and dont touch it!... then try again.
Rice is the answer! It sucks all the water away in a week... although i would leave it 2, just to be 100% sure

Sorry guys this happened like a week or two ago now. Took the battery out asap, left it for two days, hair dried it and then tried and it didn't work. I plugged it into the charger to see if it was just the battery that's ****ed, apparently just the battery is dead.
It was in a pool, so chlorine could have corroded some parts? Could I try to clean off the corrosion, replace parts etc. Or would it be cheaper to send to sony ericsson and get them to fix it?
Sony will just replace the whole phone and charge you a repair fee iirc.
Isopropanol may help with corrosion, but you need to strip the phone down to bare boards and parts, and soak it in the alcohol, then brush at with a SOFT toothbrush and gentle motions.
Isopropanol dries fast and leaves no residue, so it's ideal for loosening gunk and driving out water. I've used it with great success to salvage laptops filled with everything from cola to beer as well as waterlogged wristwatches.

few days ago my mini pro also dripped into water i instantly removed battery
so may be damage not done to much but after that i removed water by wiping with cloth & than place it near hot air remover heater
after that i opened it thoroughly each & every part & u know water is in each & every part so i opened whole phone screen main board camera keyboard etc. & than i used hair dryer to remove water from every part of phone don't place all parts too much close to the phone or don't use hair drier for too long continuously but u can easily able to know that part is dried or not
after that in main board also u can dry it with hair dryer after u can convinced that there is no water particles remain in phone lets switch on it
after this all i done i start my phone successfully with all features working after 2 hours
& now just my keyboard lights are not working, they are working but only for 2 seconds so i have no prob with that however i give it to service center to short it out but yes this is the only solution u can get your phone working!!
if u want some help ask me

This is the best solution but since its been a while now it probably wont work, and also because your already tried charging it and turning it on. Personally i would send it to say and get then to fix, but it may even be cheaper to buy a new device as basic warrenty will not cover water damage.

Bowl of rice. Most definitely. You'll be surprised. How much moisture rice draws out of electronics you think are dry.
The worst thing you can do to the phone is attempt to turn it on prematurely one droplet of water sitting in the wrong spot when you try to power it on could ruin it. Bowl of rice with battery out and in the rice too. Couple days. Then give it a shot.

Last night I dropped my phone in a thunderstorm running from car to my house. I didn't realize it until a few hours later when I went to my car to find my phone. It was laying on the ground next to my car! It had stopped raining for a while but it was coming down cats and dogs when I dropped it. The phone was working when I picked it up but the screen kept changing from dim to bright. So i took off the case and battery and let it alone overnight. I put everything back this morning and the phone miraculously works perfectly. I didn't even know about the rice trick. Talk about lucky! I don't know how many lives my phone came with but it just lost a few last night.
okay so the phone works great but my motion sensor doesnt work anymore any idea what to do? should i take it a part and let it dry out not sure if theres anything else to dry but what could it hurt

[Q] water damage?

Good morning everyone. This morning was not a good morning for me, as I was feeding and watering my dog my phone slipped out of my jacket pocket and dropped into the dogs water bowl. It was in the water for less than a second, initially everything seemed fine there was barely any water behind the battery cover so I dried all that out and shook the phone to make sure there was no water in it's ports. Then shortly after that its USB port started going wonky(started acting like I was connecting USB cable and disconnecting it over and over), and my touch buttons at bottom of screen seem to stop working which makes doing anything damn near impossible. The USB plug seems to work as I've got it plugged up and its charging fine, but now my PC says USB unrecognized device. What I want to know is will these things work themselves out, is there something I can do to help them, or am I screwed?
Thanks for helping.

It is more then likely ruined. When ever a phone gets wet you should immediately remove the battery and put the phone In A large bag of rice for 3 days. No less then 72 hours and you have a very good shot at being OK. For phones that have been completely submerged and are water logged I would do 3 days of rice and then a quick dip In rubbing alcohol and then another day of rice. The alcohol prevents corrosion on the electrical solder connections. I hope you have insurance. You can try the rice now but since you supplied voltage to a wet circuit the damage is done. O and when I say a quick dip in alcohol I mean remove the screen and only dip the circuit board.

Thanks for the reply, but I think I got lucky. My USB port has stopped acting up and I was actually able to see contents of my phone thru the pc. Also my buttons are working fine again maybe there was a slight bit of water crossing circuits and it finally dried up.
The best way to dry it up, if it ever happens again is to use uncooked rice. Put the phone (with the cover open and the everything pull out) in the container with the rice covering it. Depending on how wet it got, it might take a few days ( 2 - 4) for it to completely dried up.

Arent you also supposed to put it in the sun, so it heats up and evaporates the water from inside the phone and then the rice absorbs it... or is that old news and overkill?

The sun only dry the outside part of the device. There will be moisure inside device (sometime) that will stay for a while. In order to get rid of the moisure from the inside of the device (if it is excessive water got in) is to use the rice.
In this case it might be excessive and overkill (since the device still works). But then I have mentioned that if next time. Sorry that I didn't indicated that if the device won't come on after sun drying, then use this method...

I think you misunderstood him... he's not saying put the phone in the sun, he's saying put the bowl of rice with the phone in it in the sun. That supplies heat which facilitates the process of water evaporating. I wouldn't leave it in direct sunlight though, just in a warm place near a window maybe.
mine dropped in toilet
2 days in rice with small bag of desiccant inside of phone(take battery out)
desiccant will dry out faster
I'd use some Lysol after that one

When mine fell in a cup of water, I put it in a bowl of rice, and then put the bowl over a scentsy warmer. The small light bulb in the warmer gently heated the bowl, without getting it too hot.

I just had my phone "waterproofed" by a company last week, just in case. A friend of mine demonstrated the effectiveness on his iphone 4 and I instantly wanted to have it too as I use my phone as a GPS unit on my motorcycle. I live only a few minutes away and walked in to have it done. I can't attest to their shipping: http://www.liquipel.com/

Dropped phone in water, won't turn on, options?

So I accidently dropped my phone in water yesterday. I immediately powered it off and when I got home a couple of hours later, disassembled it, dried it off best I could and put the components in rice overnight. Today I reassembled and it will not turn on at all. I took it back apart and put it back in the rice.
I'm seriously screwed if this phone is dead. I REALLY can't afford $600.00 for a new one. I might have to buy a damn flip phone and lose my unlimited VZ data if I can't get it to work....
Is there anywhere out there that repairs phones like this? Anyone got a tip that might bring it back to life? I'm desperate!

putting the phone in a bag of rice overnight isnt enough. put more rice in the bag, zip it up, and stick it somewhere that gets sun, youll want at least 3-4 days.
Still in 30 days period ? Make sure u dry it up then exchange it

Phone have sensors now internally where they can tell if the phone had water damage there is no way to change that.

I would try to find silica packs instead of rice. And yes, you will want to leave this in a warm dry spot for at least a week. Even then, there may be corrosion which will forever affect the device.
If you can't find a quart sized bag of silica baggies, then change the rice daily.

I am going to make your day if u used American express to buy your phone. They have a 90 no question asked insurance policy included with every purchase. Check if your credit card has the same feature. They also add 1 year warranty to everything u buy too. I use it for big purchases and save money by not adding store ought warranties

Probably too late now but that's why they sell insurance. Then your only out the deductible. I rarely get insurance but on a phone that retails for 600+ I went for it. Anyway hindsights 20/20 so gl with the rice.

1st thing you did wrong is drop the phone in water. 2nd thing was trying to turn it on. Could of made it worse.
Like said before leave it in a bag of rice or something similar for a few days. There may be small chance of hope.

If you have it apart, put everything except the battery and screen in some 97% alcohol. Just for a minute, then let them dry out. The alcohol will push the corrosion and water away from the parts.
My son put my GS2(Epic Touch) in the toilet a few times.I took it apart, dried it out with paper towel first then put it in the oven for 2 minutes.
When i was sure it was fully dry,i put it back together, put the battery back in and BOOM it still worked!
Stop listening to these fools who know next to nothing about electronics, first thing you do after your phone been in water take out the battery and dont push the power button.Take it apart and dry it out like i did but dont over cook it in the oven. That rice thing will surelly corode your phone inside and rarely works.
After i did this everything stlil worked, except one thing-the power button, lol.Power button workes only one time-to turn the phone on but after the phone is on it doesnt work any more.So in order for me to turn on the screen i would have to wait untill someone calls or txt me or plug the phone in the usb so i can unlock the screen or battery pull.I suspect this happened because my girl when she found the phone wet tried to turn it on to see if it worked and she shouldnt have.
Anyways without power button working that made my phone almost useless-almost.
I put two screws in back cover and mounted the phone by my son's bed,i plugged it in the outlet that was connected to a light switch. So if i want to turn the phone on i simply hit the light switch and the screen will light up so i can unlock it.
Now my 2 year old son has a mini tv by his bed so he can watch cartoons and play games, this is something that i used to dream of when i was a kid, lol.

Yeah he is right,i forgot to mention aclcohol-it helps i did that to but dont soak it in alcohol!Take a q-tip,soak it in alcohol and go over the electronoc board carefully, make sure none of the cotton got caught in the chips.
What i did i just went over the metal strip that connected the phone to the screen with alcohol to make sure it had good contact.
The key is to put the phone parts in the oven including the screen to let it get hot enough to evaporate any left over water
without melting the parts.
I put it in for about 2 minutes on 500 degrees.I took it out when the phone was almost too hot to touch-almost too hot.
should have blow dried it soon as you opened it up.
Oh and forget about rice-thats what the oven is for.Or if you dont know or scared about using the oven and overcooking the phone, just use a hair dryer.
Put it on the highest heat setting and start heatting the phone parts untill they are too hot to touch.
Rice is the last resort option for thing that you cant dissasemble,if you can take it apart and dry it out there is no need for rice-ever.

When you take apart the phone and dry it out there is no longer need for rice. Now if you had a unibody phone that was hard/impossible to take a part or put back together then that would call for the bag of rice to slowly soak up the water.
