I was wondering if there was something I could download, or something from the market that i could download that would make my phone say H instead of 3G? My vibrant is not rooted.
I'm wondering why... but there won't be an app to do that. The G E and 3G icons are held in drawables. So unless you make your own update.zip with replaces drawables, I don't that's going to happen.

Why do you want it to display that? The H is generally displayed when you're using HSPA/HSPA+. If you're connected t 3G it will say 3G. If you're connected to Edge, you'll get an E and if you're on the barebones cell network all you get is the number of bars you have.

I think he wants his phone to be like nexus one is, or other android phones are running custom roms, specifically cyanogen mod. With cm, it will jump from 3g to h icon quite often when data is used, does it to me in my area. I get hspa speeds here, but 3g is the only icon displayed. I like it this way more, the constant jump from 3g to hspa in notifications pane is annoying. Maybe he just wants people to see that his phone is on hspa and not 3g, because the icon doesn't change to that on stock rom.
I remember the first time my g1 said h... Had to call a buddy with a g1 and had to find an i*hone to make jealous...

Not true. I have a stock rom on my Vibrant and it does toggle between 3g and hybrid. It just depends on whether or not you have the new radios broadcasting in your area. Some markets have a lot of hybrid running, while many others have little to none. One of my best friends is an RF tech for T-Mo.
Haha "H" doesn't stand for "Hybrid"

No ****, Einstein! It stands for HSDPA, but ask any switch tech and he will tell you its hybrid. Right now in many markets, it is a true hybrid mix of HSDPA and 3g and not explicitly one or the other. Do some research before you criticize someone, retard!

I downloaded the user manual to the vibrant (not the one that comes in the box) and it definitely says that there is a 'H' icon. I wonder why they don't have it displayed when actually connected to a HSDPA+ connection?
This is the text next to the 'H' Icons:
Displays when the 3G+ network connection is active.
Displays when your phone is communicating with the
3G+ network.
What does it mean when there's just a G?
3G means 3G
E means EDGE
H means Hybrid/HSPA or whatever. I was out of town last weekend, and noticed that it was just a G.

Does anyone think or know why or why not we can flash the radio from the G2 to work on the vibrant to get the HSPA+ network connections. or is this a hardware thing? im not a dev but wouldnt mind learing so i can contribute too.
it is a hardware thing. the vibrant can get hspa connections but not hspa+. hspa maxes out at 7.2Mbits/s though, so that's still pretty good.
How would we be able to get hspa working? I think my touch pro2 was on hspa. I always had the H logo in the tool bar.

This same question has passed my mind as well. More often then not I notice in the phone status that the signal is UTMS, on the rare occasion is may say hsdpa. So i wouldn't be surprised if in the radio settings, utms is the preferred signal type.
we already have hspa. hspa+ is what the g2 has. hspa is just 3g...
From past experience with all of my previous smart phones the radio firmware upgrade is hardware specific.....So a Samsung radio will not work with HTC(G2) firmware.
for t-mobile, when you're on HSPA or UMTS, it just uses the 3G logo on the notification bar.
you can check at settings->about phone -> status to see what mobile network type you are on. mine says HSDPA right now, but when i'm at home, it usually says HSPA.
when they update your cell site with the HSPA+ cell, you will probably get an increase in speed because they will probably upgrade the internet connection to the cell to support HSPA+ speeds which means you get up to 7.2Mb/s. I think someone said earlier that most 3G sites only have two T1 lines as the backhaul, meaning you will probably get max 1.5Mb/s in a speed test.
Hardware thing. MIP
HSPA 7.2 is good enough for me and when HSPA+ rolls out in my area I ought to get closer to that theoretical speed more often. I've seen speeds like 5.9 Mbps on Speedtest.net when I'm near a regular HSPA tower.
I do wish we could mod the icon to display an "H" on HSPA connections like the G2 (G2 shows an "H" for regular HSPA as well as HSPA+). I remember running Klick Hero on my G1 almost a year ago, and getting the H icon from time to time on that old thing!
You can confirm you are on HSPA with the Mobile Signal Widget.
Itll show h on 2.2

The reason you cannot flash the G2 radio to get HSPA+ on the Vibrant is because the Vibrant DOES NOT HAVE A HSPA+ RADIO. Flashing the radio/modem software onto the Vibrant will not help and will probably damage your handset.
Adding software to the phone to use hardware it does not physically have is pointless.

You don't do anything to "get HSPA working", because it already works. If the cell site your handset is connected to is HSPA, then that is what your handset will connect with.
Just because the icon in the notification bar says "3G", this does not mean that you are not connected to a HS(D)PA network. Check "Settings > About phone > Status > Mobile network type" to check which type of network you are connected to. Mine currently says "HSDPA", but I have a "3G" icon in the notification bar.
Does anybody think its possible to take a baseband chip from the Epic 4g, and solder it into the Vibrant to get it to work with Sprint's WiMax network?
Only way I see that happening is of you mod the phones hardware then mod the software drivers to make it work...it can be done but is a huge pain in the butt....I use to mod our sat phones and radios over in iraq to bump signal for direct calls...the hardware side is easy little patch work needed....software side to make it work is where the work would really come in...mod for the kern...then drivers...then fixing all dependency issues for the radio...then last part is the battery issue...you would have to find a radio that wouldn't eat like it was at an all you can eat dollar dinner....but if you are into hardcore mods keep everyone posted...lol

Not without a ton of programing knowledge.
i would venture to guess no, because more than the baseband chip would probably need to be included. you'd probably some of the receivers as well. At the very least, the chip marked wimax power amplifier.. http://www.chipworks.com/samsung-epic-4g.aspx
why would you want to do that anyways? the phone isn't designed to support two baseband chips so you probably wouldn't have any way of having both tmo and wimax. might as well just buy both phones

The shipped ROM on the Vibrant does not display an "H" for HS(D)PA connections ever. It will only show "G" for GPRS, "E" for EDGE and "3G" for UMTS, HSDPA and HSPA.

Hello all - I don't know if there's any answer to this or not but thought I'd throw it out there. I updated Android myself to 2.1 since apparently AT&T doesn't feel the need to. That has been a fine experience and I've experience nothing negative aside from the wireless network speed. My phone now always has the H (for HSDPA from what I understand) instead of of 3G, but downloads, web browsing, and YouTube are all way slower than they were before. It takes 10 - 15 seconds to download a 750k app usually. I have ran the speed test app from speedtest.net and its results confirm this by showing 44 kbps downstream & 750 kbps upstream speeds.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? I know that HSDPA is supposed to be faster than 3G but this is unbearable - I am almost tempted to use EDGE exclusively because that is all I pick up at home (EDGE service that is) and I get better performance when using the browser than I do with HSDPA (although that is probably more mental than anything since when on HSDPA I am sitting there staring at the phone thinking "What is taking so long!" and when on EDGE I choose something and then don't worry about it for a few because I know it will take some time.
Thanks for any advice!

This is probably a network coverage issue and nothing you can do about it from a phone standpoint.
Ha! I love the first response had a joker pic because I was thinking of the joker when I wrote "why so sloooow".
Anyways when you say coverage what do you mean precisely? do you simply mean at&t hasnt done enough in my area for hsdpa to be effective? I do always have a full 4 bars of strength on it pretty much.
Thanks!

Yes, I mean AT&T. Having four bars means that you have a good signal. It does not indicate however how much bandwidth AT&T has allocated to that particular area/tower.
Think of it like a wireless router at home or office. On your laptop or computer, you see that you have a strong WiFi signal but, that does not mean that you have a fast connection as that depends on your DSL/cable connection.
Get my point?
Got it, that's what I feared. So in essence by improving my phone with 2.1 I screwed my phone (currently) with hsdpa

No, it did not screw your phone. Your phone is innocent here. It is probably the network. AT&T may have a problem in that area. Did you try the speed somewhere else?
Nope, haven't tried it anywhere else. I didn't mean screw my phone, what I, meant was if at&t is not so good with hsdpa in my area I am stuck with those speeds until that is resolved because I can't force 3g (my speed when I had iphone 3g was usually around 1 mbps)

Your phone automatically switches between H/3G/E where available. I also have AT&T and have debranded my phone and did not notice any lag.
your problem is AT&T.
H is higher than 3G. if you got problems with it it`s because the signal is strong enough to use H but it preforms worse than 3G (cunfusing ah?!)
Well I was outside of my town the other day, in the country and noticed I was in hsdpa somehow so I ran a test and out there I was getting on average about 3.7 mbps. I guess where I am most of the time just isn't an optimal spot. Thanks all for the responses!

No because the phone only shows either E for edge or H+ for 3G or HSDPA.

Lol it switches to edge because you don't have a 3G ssignal; what else is it supposed to do if you don't have it?
You can choose (for throat part) to go down but you can't just magically get a better/faster signal.

I too am needing to set my phone to connect to Edge only. I have 1 bar at the house when my network type is HSDPA. When connected to HSDPA at the house, with one bar, I constantly get dropped calls or my phone may not ring at all. If the phone decides to connect to Edge, which has a full signal, then everything seems to be a-ok. Most of the time the phone completely disconnects from all networks when it switches from HSDPA to Edge... not cool.
I can not get this sucker to connect to Edge only via setting the preferred network type to WCDMA. The phone will automatically set itself to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) if I manually try to set WCDMA as the preferred network.
Rather annoying to say the least. ATT is the only carrier that has a full signal at the house. That's the only reason I that I signed up with them.

Wrong. Phones only use HSPA when transferring data, they idle in vanilla UMTS.
AT&T mangles their frameworks to report everything as H+ even when it's not actually in HSDPA+ mode.
CM7 is just reporting the truth that AT&T's mangled framework hides from you.

Different RIL.
And our RIL might have the same minor issue that the Infuse RIL did in which HSPA+ was reported as only UMTS - so if you were in a non-+ HSPA mode it would be H, if you were in 3G it would be 3G, if you were in HSPA+ it would be 3G. This was a display error... Do you notice any significant differences in actual data speed performance between CM7 and stock firmware?
(Actually, you could still see slow data if the CM7 tree uses older TCP buffer size values.)

It doesn't really work that way. 3g and 4g are independent connections that are maintained simultaneously. You're still connected to 3g even when 4g is connected. If you aren't getting 4g, then it simply isn't connecting to it and there really isn't much you can do about it.

Since I am on the latest ICS global firmware and a custom ROM, I not sure if if this location is still accurate, but go to settings-call-preferred network. When you get to this you should see a number of options. One is LTE only (4G setting) if that is what you want to do. However, if you do this, then you may not get a data connection if 4G is not available. Also, if you have a weak 4G signal, if will eat up your battery time.
You might try downloading a 4G Toggle program from Play Store. It will take you directly to phone settings. Even though I live in a 4G area, I actually leave my phone in 3G CDMA only mode unless I really need the 4G speed to download something. I get much better battery life.
You could try getting into the hidden phone settings and changing your prefered connection to CDMA, LTE which should disable 3g if i understand it right. That option should also save you a bit of battery life as well if it works.
You should be able to choose lte only from the hidden menu
