Just like on the Samsung Infuse 4G, ATT's radio on the SGSII restricts the band selection\alternate carrier selection when using different SIMs .... are there any radios yet that can be flashed to disable this limitation yet? Flying to Asia tomorrow so would be nice to have the ability.
As far as I knew it has nothing to do with the Carrier software (at least it doesn't with non-android phones I have. They have a manual selection menu hidden, it's just the SIM locks it down.

Well if a sim locks it down that's a carrier restriction
If all you want is Sim unlock, get your Sim unlock code. ROM or modem won't make that happen.
There are a few ways to unlock your phone. Do a search.

Not to be rude but there's more to it than that... I travel internationally weekly and you're correct when it comes to using country specific Sims in thosecountries bit not when it comes to using a "country x" sim in "country z" on an att phone. I went through this with infuse too and flashing Rogers radio solves the issue. Its an att imposed limitation.

That is because if you are using AT&T Sim, there is a built in preferred carrier list from
AT&T to keep the cost down, to At&t, not necessary to you.
IIRC, if you Sim unlock and use a local Sim, you will have the option to manually select network.

Known as a PRL (preferred roaming list) but this does not effect the ability to use a different SIM. The PRL is on the SIM not on the phone. Typically, you have the option on the device to ignore the PRL and do a manual network selection but only if the subsidy lock allows it.

You should be able to remove the subsidy lock without having to change the modem firmware. As for the band selection, a modem from the international version of SGSII is probably your best bet. But do a search to see what happens when applying different modems for overseas use.

Yeah, that's the issue is I need to be able to select a carrier. The phone is sim unlocked, but it's preferring a different carrier than I need to be using. Any way to free myself from being able to get the international version? Won't the International version not have the appropriate "4G" AT&T frequency\technology?

As a side note, I'm in Bangkok at the moment. I just grabbed a dtac one day sim (cause using local sims work, it's just when using foreign roaming sims i have the att issue selecting a carrier manually), and whatever category of HSPA+ they're using is rockin no a mofo... I'm getting 11mbps down and 2.44mbps upload. Now THAT seems more like "4G" than anything we have back home in the US, hehe.

Not true, on the Infuse and this phone, it's ATT's radio that prevents manual selection of networks. If you take an infuse, and unlock, then try to manually select a network operator, the menu is grayed out. If you then flash the rogers radio, wa=lahh... the network selection is available.
Yea, this restriction has nothing to do with the SIM. It's the AT&T-customized radio that's in our phones. The AT&T Android also removes the 3g/2g toggle, but that has nothing to do with the radio, and is a simple Android tweak.
I think we're gonna have to wait and see if an I9100 modem will work with our GS2s and if it will support both 850 Mhz and 1900 Mhz WCDMA...

Yeah. I'm finding that it's not a huge deal anyhow w\ Google Voice. More and more while travelling I want to use my phone for internet, and thats never cost effective for using a global roaming sim like Tru anyhow. Here DTAC, the biggest carrier just turned on "4G" (funny enough they call it 4G+ haha), and I'm getting 10mbps+ down and 2.5mbps+ upload. It's crazy-fast compared to my ATT at home. And for 30 Thai Baht per 24 hours it's unlimited data and unlimited local calls. Can't beat that. Here until Friday, so for $5 I have a week of amazingly fast internet.
Question for you. Does the International unlocked version have the ability to use the same HSPA+ frequencies and work fine on ATT? I like that idea if it does, seems a lot more people developing for it. But I'm not sure I can give up having 4 capacitive touch keys having had them for 2 phones now, hehe. A physical button just looks so old-fashioned, hehe.

International version of GS2 has quad-band HSPA+ radio (supports all AT&T bands w/o problems) while AT&T GS2 has only tri-band HSPA+. If you travel a lot internationally and want local 3G/4G data speed, international vesion is a better choice.

That may not be the case.
The Captivate had a published "tri-band UMTS radio w/ 850/1900/2100" support, but in reality the radio supported 850/900/1900/2100. Suspect it's the same case with the SGH-i777. Further, the potentially missing UMTS/WCDMA band (900 MHz) is used in very few places, and almost no where exclusively.
But back on topic:
When I have some more time and feel like mucking around, I might run through a bunch of different i9100 modems and see what happens.

Hmmm. If the phones were physically identical I'd have done the i9100 in a heartbeat. For me the radio issue is annoying .

In US, i9100 is around $550 to $600 but none of them come with any US warranty, only international warranty which ironically excludes US.

This same thing is true with the i777. And turning on the 900MHz band is done with the same method. Not sure if it will stick though.
Hey all...
A friend of mine would be visiting the US next month. I was thinking of ordering the DNA at a full retail price (obviously). But this term of 'unlocking' confuses the hell out of me.
What does it actually unlock? From what I read, it is already unlocked and can be used with ANY SIM around the world. So, my friend just walks in to a store, buys the phone and gets it here in Delhi, India for me, I pop in my SIM card and everything just works fine.
Is that right?
Do I need to be aware of something that might not work. There is no 4G here yet, but I use 3G. Will that work?
Everything from 3/2G, MMS, calls, Msgs...everything will work just fine right?

Most of the unlocking in the DNA forum is referring to the bootloader. Since Verizon is the Anti-Christ of cell phone carriers, they don't allow phones to be sold with an unlockable bootloader. However an exploit was discovered that allowed HTCdev (website to that is used to unlock non-Verizon/AT&T HTC phones) to see the Droid NDA as a different phone and then unlock it.
The phone is GSM unlocked out of the box. Meaning you should be able to put your SIM in, plug in your carrier's APN settings, and theoretically be able to use 2G/3G/MMS/SMS/Calls. However, I'm not sure what frequencies carriers in India use for GSM and if the Droid DNA supports those frequencies.
There are some CDMA carriers in India I believe. I don't know what steps need to be taken to use the Droid DNA on them or if that is even possible. (I don't think it is)

It is both cdma and gsm. But I don't know if it will work on any cdmacarriers besides Verizon.

I searched Google and found that Vadafone India uses 900/1800 Mhz and the DNA supports 850/900/1900/2100 MHz. Looks like it will work on 2G only.

Just wondering, because I have a Japanese model. I was originally quite fine with using GSM providers, however, now I've moved to a place where Verizon performs significantly better than AT&T and there aren't any other choices as far as I can see (MVNOs aside, but the problem I have with AT&T is with signal, and an MVNO isn't going to help with that). Now I want to switch to Verizon, and I'm wondering if the advice provided to the others with KDDI radios on Sprint Photons would also be the same for a plain old KDDI Photon.
verizon uses cdma and keeps a database of their cdma phones. Thus they dont allow phones on their network that arent already in their database (i.e. they wont allow non-verizon phones). Sprint is the same way.
The only caveat to this is roaming. They will allow non-verizon phones to roam their network as part of roaming agreements with other carriers. You just wont be able to use verizon as your carrier.
OK, then what of a Verizon MVNO, like Page Plus? That seems like it should be OK, from some of what I've read, as long as no one's blacklisted my phone's MEID (it's my first time bringing it to the US, so that shouldn't be an issue).

Although pageplus does allow "bring your own phone", I dont know if they accept non-verizon phones. you will have to ask them.

Page plus will take anything, sprint phones, verizon phones, any cdma phone for the most part that arent blacklisted. Might even take blacklisted sprint phones, just no blacklisted verizon phones.
Ooh, sounds good. In that case it seems like I just need to figure out how to flash in the right settings. All I remember is that someone else wrote in one of the KDDI radio threads that data doesn't work, but voice+text does.

What settings can I use to configure my phone to T-mobile? I have an ATT unlocked 920 and I only get E signal. At times it switches to 4G and it drops. I read many posts about changing connection speed but I don't have the option. Is there a firmware that I should install in order to get the most use out of my phone?

I unlocked my Lumia 920 at&t version yesterday. But it didn't worked with mobilicity. I don't know what's the problem. Can any one help.
It seems that ATT version, unlike Rogers version, has AWS disabled. And apparently it is not controlled by the firmware image itself, because I flashed Rogers rom. We need to find a way to turn it back on...

So even that didn't worked??? I think so it wont gonna work.I just emailed to nokia care they say, even flashing the phone with different rom wont gonna work. It's not controlled by firmware.Then too i am planning to flash with rogers version!1 What you suggest????

For some reason, when I go to different areas around my city, I get 4G, but when I am at home, it switches to edge.

I still don't get this part - are phones sold by ATT and Rogers different in hardware? Because people reported using Wind/Mobilicity on inlocked Rogers phones without any issues. I was under the impression that ATT phone should also work if flashed with Rogers firmware. Is it not the case?

AWS stands for Advanced Wireless Services (wikipedia). It uses 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, and only a few phones support these bands.
So there no way to enable 4g on a AT&T Lumia. I love this phone but if there no way to fix this then what the point on having a slow connection
I have it enabled after they gave me the unlock code. I haven't done anything special to enable it apart from the regular phone updates. I'm not in the USA.

AT&T L920 has AWS 3G disabled by default. You must flash an alternate ROM to enable it.

I looked through the thread and I assume this method is still possible? If I enable the AWS band will I be able to get 3g and 4g on my phone? (Currently, I have E and 4G, but my house is at the end of the 4g signal...lol.)

Yes, you will have 100% access to ALL of T-Mobile's network.
BUT the European ROM does not call HSPA+ "4G", it says H+ in the status bar. The European networks never followed T-Mobile's bull**** of calling HSPA+ a 4G network.
Look at the RM-821 column in this chart to see what each connection type will be labeled with a European ROM.

I'm currently on European DEV ROM. How exactly do you folks confirm that AWS is indeed working? Can anyone please confirm that you were able to get Wind Home on unlocked ATT Lumia 920 that has been flashed to Rogers, European and then back to Rogers ROM?

If you are able to connect to an AWS network. I personally use AT&T so I can't test it out, just repeating what others have said. What I know is that people with Rogers pentaband RM-820s flashed the AT&T ROM and that disabled AWS. Flashing Rogers back didn't re-enable it. So it seems that some ROMs like AT&T reprogram the bands and some like Rogers don't. I don't know any of this for sure, though.

The most important question now is - which ROMs can reprogam these bands back. With TMo its hard to confirm you are actually getting AWS and not the 1900 MHz 3G. I'm waiting for someone to confirm that with a true AWS carrier (Wind, Mobilicity).

Yeah if you're in an area with 1900MHz 3G then it is impossible to tell I think. I do not believe the 920 has any good diagnostics app.
Reading through the forums though multiple people have stated that AT&T ROM disables AWS and that euro dev ROM enables AWS. One person stated that the euro dev ROM did not enable AWS and instead he flashed through a ton of different ROMs including some latin america ROMs before finally getting AWS enabled. It's all in the thread I linked to earlier from January.
My question remains, when carrier unlocking an s9 or s9+, is there any way to make it available on different network types like say if the phone started out using a carrier that uses CDMA, is their any way to flash it to utilize t-mobile's frequency bands?
I unlocked two galaxy s9+'s that were on xfinity, which uses verizon towers. The two phones did unlock, but only for carriers utilizing CDMA. I was hoping they would be able to be used on t-mobile after unlocking, but they can't. Only messaging and data works using a t-mobile SIM card. Verizon works fine. SO my question still remains, is there a way to make it work?
I used itekimei .com to have the phones unlocked, as I found they were suggested here on XDA. And they weren't really able to answer my question either. They said it should work with t-mobile, but the conversation ended with "t-mobile is having problems with unlocked phones." This is super frustrating trying to get an answer.

Also this one specifically about Xfinity https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/help/xfinity-mobile-unlock-service-t3796349. But mine didn't work. I don't think U.S. S9's are cross compatible from CDMA to GSM. I have been searching and searching and can't find a way.
Yes, the US unit hardware is cross compatible. Heck, Verizon itself isn't all CDMA. They are phasing out CDMA soon and most of their network is LTE.
I have a US unlocked S9+ and can use any carrier in the US. You could too, all you need to do is flash the US Unlocked firmware to the device using Odin.
Your problem may be the Xfinity firmware restricting certain bands is all. Or possibly the device isn't really unlocked.
