Why don't Nexus Morphs Work? EDIT: THEY DO!!! - Vibrant Themes and Apps

I understand with some of the more intense morphs. But i tried getting the twitter/fb widget morphs working and it says the theme file is invalid? Even when I move my twitter/fb apps to /system/app as stated with the correct file names. Just wanting to get the ball rollin on theming.

It's probably a compatability problem.
Nexus One and the Vibrant are two different phones and have different specifications and screen size. The only metamorphing thats available at the moment are notification bar customizations (vanilla or black).

Theres a transparent status bar morph as well. Just found it interesting, theyre both high density devices, and almost all the apk morphs posted for the nexus claim that they should work for all high density devices.

they are the same resolution lol, physical size has no changing factor on that. plus its a software themeing, I highly doubt that hardware is taken into account otherwise the vast majority of Android apps would only work on some phones and not a majority of them.
What would be a contributing factor is that the Vibrant runs Touchwiz while the Nexus does not.

im not that deeply into it.. i was just speculating, but yeah its most probable because of TouchWiz and stock Android.

The "Theme file invalid" error is because of a change in the way Metamorph finds theme files. In the early days of MM, theme files were plain text files with a .thm extension. Stericson decided that this was a bad way of doing things, and changed MM to check for .xml files with the info to apply the theme.
Open one of the zips for the themes you're attempting to install. I'd bet that there's a .thm file in there. The older themes will no longer work without converting the .thm file to .xml.
Metamorph doesn't care what phone you're on as long as the screen dpi (hdpi/mdpi), file location, and file name are correct.

I actually figured it out. It was giving me problems after moving apps to /system/app and then applying the morph (app would disappear). turns out after a reboot the app would appear just fine and with the morph! I have already tested out youtube, facebook, twitter, sportstap, geniewidget, audio manager, and pandora transparent widgets, THEY ALL WORK. Looks great too with the transparent status bar.

Search for "Nexus Morphs" or something alone those lines. Theres a thread dedicated solely to morphs for the Nexus, so far I have not found one that doesn't work (pay attention to upload dates to make sure theyre xml format.)

Its a really bad idea to flash anything framework-res with touchwiz it might bootloop.. Remember to do a nandroid...

Icons on our phone are just png files. Any png file with the right size will do. There are various apps on the market to change icons on the home screen. If you want to change it in the app drawer too you can use apk manager to extract each apk you want to change. Swap out the icon in the res/drawables, zip it back up and sign it again.

What is the correct size of the png icons that would most likely resemble the iphone icons?
I feel like alot of icons I find online are too small.

well the default samsung messaging, gallery, video and so forth are 72x72 but I guess smaller icons would work too, even if they are a bit grainy.
Edit: The iphone icons in the above website are 120x120 so they are higher resolution than our default ones. I tested it by swapping out the calculator icon in TouchWizCalculator.apk in system/app. It works nicely.

[THEME] [REQ] Google Voice Dark

Anyone have a Dark themed Google Voice? That would go with FunkenEclipse?
Anyone know how to theme this and up for the challenge?
** UPDATE **
Here is a working DarkGrey/Green themed version of GoogleVoice (0.4.2.32) if anyone wants it.
*Thanks to xkape*

** Just put on SD card, boot into recovery, install zip and reboot **

Okay, So I've been trying everything I can think of, have done alot of reading. Really could use some help here guys. If anyone can give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it.
I DLed the Google Voice from the Market, put on my computer, unzipped it with 7zip.
Took the res folder (drawable-hdpi), and replaced all the .png files with updated green/black themed ones from that above post.
This is where I get lost. I try to rezip the package, tried it with every kind of compression.
Everytime I go to install it on my phone, it tells me.....
Parse error
There is a problem parsing the package.
Anyone got some pointers?
OK buddy, 1st off, I am assuming by dark voice, you mean black background with white text. If that assumption is true, theres a lot more work to be done than editing images.
However, if you are in fact just trying to change images and are familiar with 7zip, the process is pretty easy. Especially since you already edited your images.
Lets do it this way, since your progression will yield the right results...
grab your completely stock voice that you have.. open it (NOT UNZIP) it with 7zip... find your way to the proper folder(s) and move your edited images into.. yes, while still zipped. Once thats done, close 7zip. it will ask you about updating the archive.. say yes... you're done.
And if you are in fact looking for the black backgrounds with white text.. grab my BNB theme and pull the Voice out if it. Its inverted.

Yeah, Dark themed Google Voice, like in the 1st post. The green one.
I havent thought about the TXT color... crap im not going to be able to read it after i update the PNGs......
One of your themes has a themed Google Voice? I might have to try that.....
Thanks for your help sir.
K, So I ended up pulling your Voice.apk from the BnB theme (which looks awesome btw... dunno how I missed that one)
I like it, but its just black and white. So I opened it with 7zip, go to res/drawable-hdpi and replace the file "widget_inbox_background.9.png"
That is the background for the widget.... only thing I care about..
I let it update the archive and save.
Copy the apk to my SD card and attempt to install it.
Everything looks great it appears to be installing then it gets to the end and says "Application not installed" done
I cannot get past this part..... am i doing something wrong?
bobhilton.... what color do you want it to be? Im willing to bet I can find the color you are looking for.
I mean the whole app, not just that background image. I can make that right in 5 minutes for you.

Really? wow that would rock. I'm just starting to learn this stuff. I've done so much reading and feel like i've came so far. but I'm finding out how much a pain in the arse these .9png files are....
The theme I'm looking for is the Dark greyish/ green one. Its in my first post of this thread. There is a screen shot here
http://www.mpmitchell.com/download/droidx/Apps/GVDA3.jpg
I like those colors.... not a fan of the font but i dont really care. I've tried everything. I found that .9png background widget image but I cannot insert it into your BnB theme
I would love if you could insert it if its not a big deal, you make it sound easy. I'm going on about 4 days of reading and about 10 different programs..... I must be missing something.....
Thanks for you help man.....

Awesome man! Geeez that was fast..... mind giving me a few quick pointers on how you did it?..... You must've used cheat codes or a game genie
Actually, I think you may have just been trying to install it wrong..lol I decompiled it thinking I was going to need to fix some 9pngs but the log said they were all ok. So I just stuck it in an update.zip and installed it..lol
I attached mine if you want to try it.
Wow, I don't get it....
It worked flawlessly.... looks perfect.... you rock man.....
So if you don't mind.... just help me understand this a little....
I went through your flashable zip (Voice.zip) and looked at everything.... It just pushed the apk (Voice.apk) to ssytem/app..... right?
K, so, the Voice.apk that is in your updatezip... system/app/voice.apk
how did you get this to work?
Is this your original inverted voice.apk? and then you just replaced the drawable-hdpi complete folder? or just the updated pngs? and thats it? Thats like the first thing i tried.... for like HOURS....
I just went through the apk.... looks like you just overwrote the pngs and 9pngs with the new gray/green ones.... man... you didnt have to mess with any xmls did you?
That just seems way to easy... I tried that like 10 times
Anyhow... thank you so much for your help man!
If the above is true, shouldn't I be able to do this same process with the new updated googlevoice from the market? and just update the pngs?
Don't know if I want to try it yet, but im really curious where I went wrong so it might be a good challenge...
I think I may of had a bad update.zip... I will try yours next with themed facebook
Theres an new GVoice? I guess I need to get to it.
For this, All I did was take Voice out of the BNB theme and opened it with 7zip. (NOT UNZIP)... then I opened (again, not unzip) you hdpi folder. I highlighted all the images and moved them all at once into the BNB hdpi folder. I then closed 7zip and yes to updating the archive. I stuck Voice.apk into a update.zip template and put it on the SD Card. I rebooted into recovery and installed the zip.
Ive never tried just sticking something in the system folder and hiting install. Not sure that would work.
Maybe just putting the apk in there, making sure the permissions are correct and then just rebooting would seem more like the solid option to me. I mean, technically, if its in your system folder it is installed.

Theme Creation

I have tried UOT Kitchen before, always was unlucky at having flashing errors.
My question is this... If I take a flashable theme, with permission from the creator, I should be able to use the scripts that they include for flashing? I am savvy with un-APKing zipping, signing and what not, is that all I would have to do to recreate a theme using my own images?
Thanks to everyone here!
Yes, the script you see other themes using can be changed out with your own, as well as the content. You can also just use the UOT Kitchen script. Credit given where credit is due, of course, but the script itself (IMHO) is not something you really need permission for.
Another tip, this from firsthand experience, when you're zipping everything up getting ready to flash, make sure you're zipping the contents of the theme folder (/META-INF/ & /system/) vs zipping the theme folder.
It sounds really stupid, but it took me forever to figure out why everything I did in UOT Kitchen perfectly but everything I did, using the same damn script, just froze. But ya gotta learn somewhere, right?
Remember when using the kitchen make sure u click amend scripting in the area where u load the apks... x2 uses 2. Something recovery.. if u don't click that there will be errors everytime
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Thank you, I think I've tried UOT 5 times but never had success.
Kevin, I tried the amend scripting, it solo didn't work.
I would much rather use my own images then those offered in uot kitchen.
I'm going to try to put a theme together this weekend, I haven't modded anything since BF2 wake island air show

Ok, how much do you know about themeing? Because if you are wanting to edit just the images(.pngs) you will need some info first...
You can "simply" take the framework-res.apk and systemUI.apk and go to the HDPI folder(or wherever the images are) and "drag n drop" to your desktop and edit those... OR you can take a .png that you wanna use(say one from another theme) and just drag n drop in the HDPI folder. And then, simply make a flashable .zip and your good to go.
.9s !!!
These are a PAIN if you dont know what you are doing.
If you are going to try and get into themeing, download APKManager and decompile the framework-res.apk ... go to a .9 image(i think its .png.9 or something of the like). When you load the image(say in GIMP) you will see black squares on the OUTSIDE of the image(like near the edges of the ACTUAL picture edge)... DONT TOUCH THOSE!!!! leave them there and make edits how you choose to the rest of the image. Once you are finished, just recompile(DONT SIGN AND YES! THESE ARE SYSTEM APPS!). Put in a flashable .zip and your set.
NOW Please note:
When you are doing the drag and drop method, make sure you are REPLACING an image and not ADDING more images.. catch the drift?
this is quick how to, hope it helps and good luck. let me know if you need anything else.
All the themes rock! I have poor eye sight (far sight) so my main concern always is status bar and the battery icon. I love being able to see the percentage, but some themes use smaller battery percentage text.
.9 seem like the stretchable area I'm beautiful widget... I understand that

I was thinking of trying out theming. That is until I looked at the crap load of images just thrown into one directory. lol. It may not be as hard as it looks but I havent looked any further than that yet. I still want to try something out though. Is there an easy way of figuring out what image does what on the phone? Like if I want to change some things, I have to know the name of the image. Well, to me, it looks like they aren't named plain and simple. Plus when they are just thrown into one directory its kinda hard to distinguish what is what. It was so much easier theming for webOS. lol
Js if u really look at the framework u will see all the images in the drawable hdpi folder are really a lot of the presses..tabs. status bar icons... over scroll glow theming takes a lot of time to build straight from scratch... any .9 PNG can be edited when it is decompiled in apk manager or apk multi tool just don't edit the black patch as peppermint said or u will not compile...

@js I know what you are saying about the desire to do it but the system isn't really what I would say themer friendly! Admittedly I am not the sharpest tool in the shade when it comes to some things (like the Android OS), so I would imagine that plays a big role in my intimidation of the whole thing.
What got me was the De-Compiling and Recompiling of everything just to change something. Not to mention the signatures and etc... perhaps one day someone will write a piece of software (be it windows based or Android in a shell on a PC) that will make it all pretty simple on that part. Till then I will prob. just enjoy and appreciate the work of others.

Yeah, I agree about the decompiling and recompiling thing. When I had a webOS phone I created my own theme just by simply replacing the images and restarting the phone. With android, it seems you have to take the whole framework out, theme it and recompile the package file and flash it to the phone. Just seems a bit overwhelming.

It's not that bad if you are just changing the images... Just timely. I suggest gimp to do the work. Another tip, some of the images are indexed. In gimp change from indexed to rgb...back to indexed, then rgb. Reason being that you are now able to add any color and doing it twice clears the pixelation...
What gets hard is smali editing and .xml editing. Let me know if you need help there.

Only way I found is to turn off Notifications on the Stock ICS Quick Settings Panel. But that turns off ALL notifications. I guess it's not so much of a big deal really. I'll probably get used to it until someone finds out how to.
Someone could delete the icons for the notifications.

Yeah, decompile the systemui.apk, delete or change the .png files (guess if your just replacing, you don't have to decompile), recomplie .apk, push to phone via adb or copy/paste via Root explorer.
BUT then it is still savings space for those icons even if you make them empty png files no? That is, does the xml file look for the png and set a size for it like 50px x 75px so it would still hold a 50px space or does it not care about the image size so you could go to a 1x1 empty png?

XML shouldn't consider size at all, just .PNG name. That being said, you could also remove reference from the applicable .XML file (have to find it first) and that should take care of it all together. At least in theory. I think????

Thread bump! I'm interested in doing this, but don't really know where to start. Do you have a n00b guide you could link me to, to read up on decompiling apks, editing XML files, and identifying which I should be editing? Particularly, if I could edit the aforementioned XML file not only to not know the icons but possibly to not display the message and icons to begin with, I'd be thrilled. Next step would be figuring out how to make an app for that, although I'd imagine it would need root and would also be a whole new can of worms for me to open. =P
The dev for the Energy ROM Series has developed a way to swipe away these notifications and it will be implemented in the next update. Of course this requires you to be unlocked so you can flash it but trust me, once you unlock your Prime and start flashing roms you'll really see how the Prime SHOULD perform.

It is, but then you'd have to deodex your ROM (because most of the code changes are in the framework wiles). At that point, you might as well install a custom ROM.
And guys... simply putting up blank PNGs won't do the trick. The notification will be even more ugly to look at, because it'll be an empty space that you can't get rid of.
The way I did it is modify the java code for a few system apps to make the notifications dismissible. More elegant that way and I still don't understand why Asus didn't do this to begin with !!

Themed SMS [APP]

Consolidating my previous post, here are two simple, modified blur sms apks. we have:
a) Messagingwhite.apk: same as stock, except grey text in conversation list is white rather than transparent/grey. easier to read i think
b) Messagingicsblack.apk: the background of both read and unread texts is black, with unread text being displayed in ICS blue while read texts are in white. black background looks better with the ICS text
For both, the incoming sms box in actual conversations has been darkened. just my fancy.
Next step; blackout the background of conversation list entirely. pretty sure that'll entail diving into the framework. I know its done routinely, but im learning by experimentation as i go (more fun that way!).
Instructions:
1) Must be rooted
2) Download desired Messaging______.apk
3) Rename to Messaging.apk
4) With a file explorer or via adb, navigate to /system/app/ and copy your current Messaging.apk and corresponding odex file (if you're rom is odexed) to somewhere safe (just for a backup) and then delete them from /system/app/
5) Move the renamed Messaging.apk to /system/app/, change permissions to rw-r--r--, and reboot.
And thats it! The changes aren't big, but unlike my attempts yesterday, I think they're much more aesthetically pleasing. Particularly the one with ICS color incorporated.
Hope you enjoy! If you like hit the thanks!

im about to go watch the dark knight rises, but afterwards i'll start messing with it! it will depend on if the app draws from a specific line of code that gives a hex value, or from a .png inside the framework-res.apk. if its the latter, the rom needs to be deodexed and to be universal id have to learn how to make it a flashable zip blah blah blah. BUT if its the former, shouldn't really be that hard.
edit: yes first attempt was a big giant fail. pretty sure contacts.apk and phone.apk are intertwined in some way, I can't even decompile and recompile contacts.apk without errors when i haven't changed a single thing. and theres some images in contacts.apk that only appear in the phone app. so yea. but ill take a stab at it! just might be beyond my grasp atm

Have you ever thought about trying the calendar app change the white background to black?

I'm actually a fan of the white, but I'll look into it. Ideally I want to figure out how to make a flashable zip that will black out framework/some selected apps, but I'm not anywhere near that yet. Got my rom of choice (batakang) deodexed, but i can't even change the gradient background to black without problems. Should be a simple edit. Still much to learn obviously!
I have to get a lot of research done in the next week, hoping to get a paper published in the next 6 months, but as soon as Christmas break rolls around, this will be my pet project until grad school starts up again
Right now doing the contacts app is my priority, just figured out a key step that I was missing. still getting mad errors but making progress!

No donations necessary. I've gotten a lot from the android community and am just trying to give back since there isn't much dev support for the razr hd.
So far, contacts and phone are not looking good. I've tried all possible routes; most of the time the modded apk won't even compile and when it does, it isn't recognized upon boot. Best I've gotten is the phone to recognize it, but when the phone app is opened it's just all FC all the time. System apps are a tricky *****.
That being said, the messaging app I have pretty solid control over and can alter most of those colors, baring the background. That's tied into framework, which I was able to get blacked out! I can explain the process (moderately difficult) or more likely I'll look into making a flashable zip. So with that in mind, if anyone would like some basic color altering to their sms, I can prolly do so with the limitation that the background is the JB gradient or black. Texts, contact names, text box backgrounds (not the main background!) and such can be changed.
I'm giving up on contacts for now, unless I can find/think of a new way to get it working. phone is tied directly into it to, so that sucks. I can look at the calendar, but since its third party now (on g play where it'll get updates vs the built in one, which I deleted), I have to imagine someone's done that already. If anyone has any requests ill look into it, I'm not sure what other apps there are that someone else hasn't put a theme to that can't be put on our phones.
What I think I'm gonna do is look into how to get aosp apps working, contacts was on some rom on rzr forums but I couldn't get it on my rom (batakang). Maybe if I decompile it and recompile it with my framework...
