Hey guys, hope you can help with an issue I'm having with my Eris. A while back I dropped it in a parking lot and the screen broke. I upgraded to a Droid, but I got the screen fixed so my wife could have the phone. Everything seems to be working great, except for one problem. When you make a call, the screen goes to sleep as soon as you press the call button. When this happens, none of the buttons wake the screen up or end the call. The phone will wake up for around a second if you cover the light sensor, then uncover it, letting you end the call and then the phone is back to normal. I tried using Shakeawake and Screebl, neither worked.
I tried several different ROMs to see if it was just a weird quirk, but that didn't help. Currently running Jcase's Plain Jane with a mild overclock (710). Is there a way I can prevent the screen from sleeping? Seems easier than trying to get it to wake up. Seems like I remember a ROM that didn't sleep during calls, Espresso maybe?
If anyone can help or point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Gladtm see the Eris community still going strong, things had gotten a little ugly when I left. Sorry if my post ran a little long.

Case?
Do you have a protective case on the phone? I had the same problem with my Eris after putting a case on it. The case interfered with the sensor on the top left of the phone.
There are a couple of things to try that I can think of off of the top of my head. One, under Settings > Call Settings > there should be a box to check to keep the screen on longer during the call. The other is to try pushing the trackball in and at the same time volume down. Surely not the most convenient way, but more so than not being able to not hang up a call or whatever. I honestly had this issue and a couple of other small problems that I ended up getting a refurb. One other thing that you could try before that is doing a nandroid back up and installing a Froyo based rom. I feel that it might be a 2.1 issue for some phones. I'm not sure why, but computers/phones can be finicky sometimes. Hope this helps!
it has to be a hardware issue since it started after the phone was dropped and across several different roms. i would see vzw about getting a refurb replacement. unroot it, put it back to stock and get a new one.
I did the same thing, dropped my eris off of the moving truck, and cracked the screen, I had been looking for something to fix that issue for quite a while, recently I installed Tazz Froyo v.4 and enabled the Settings => Call Settings => Keep Screen Awake function, ever since I have enabled that it hasn't locked up on me yet *knock on wood* Good Luck
Thanks for the replies everybody. I'll try the track ball trick, then installing Froyo tonight and see if that helps. I hadn't even looked at Froyo ROMs since I came back to XDA; when I left there was only one and it really couldn't even be called functional at the time. Glad the Eris is getting Froyo goodness too.
I do agree its probably a hardware issue, especially since when my screen was broken everything still worked fine, just couldn't see the display very well and it was ugly as sin. But looking at when this happens, I think if I can keep the phone from ever telling the screen to sleep, it would probably solve the problem.
If all else fails I'll try to get a refurb. Thanks again, and if anyone thinks of anything else, post it up.

Forgot to mention, the really weird thing is it only does it every other call. Thought that was pretty strange.

So i just upgraded to Tazz V5 and it started freezing again, from my research the problem that's causing the screen to lock up is the proximity sensor, when you cracked your screen it messed that up, my hunch is that in Tazz V4 that the proximity sensor isn't supported, so as a byproduct it doesn't turn the screen off for us Just my observation, let me know what you guys think

I just can't freaking stand it.
Starting about three weeks ago I have been having major problems with my Streak doing spontaneous restarts. I tried everything. Nothing worked.
I went as far as to use the Wiki instructions to install a version one generation old on the phone so that it would do an over the air update to the current release, which it did. Didn't help. Whenever I used the phone for a long call or to play a game or use navigation, anything that kept it actually doing something for several minutes, it would start rebooting. Sometimes it would freeze to where I had to pull the battery. I even bought a disposable phone while on vacation so I could have something I could count on.
So last week I called Dell support and described what is going on. When the tech heard the symptoms and that I had already done a factory reset and fresh loads and more factory resets, he quickly decided to replace the phone.
I have had the phone since April 2011 and in May I dropped it in my living room. It has worked perfectly but does have a crack in the glass that is purely cosmetic and is not why I tried to get it replaced. The phone has worked perfectly until recently.
I'm banging my head on the desk because, wouldn't you know it, the phone has been working perfectly since I called in. We didn't do anything, just talked about the phone, and it has had one restart in the last week. As a test, I used the Navigator for the 30 mile commute home from work. My wife called me, the phone answered, worked flawlessly on speaker, and when she hung up the Navigator came right back up as smooth as you could ask for. The one game I play right now (Grave Defense) has worked flawlessly except for one restart in the middle of a game. I couldn't ask for the phone to be better.
So what do I do when the replacement arrives? I'm not sure if I trust the phone not to start screwing up again, but I'm going to be sending back a phone that is apparently working fine but has a cracked glass. We all know the entirely reasonable conclusion they will come to.
So what should I do?
Maybe you should call Dell and tell them that the screen is cracked. Find out if they will even take it back. They may not, and wind up charging you for the new one. I've not heard of them doing this, mind you, but it sounds possible.
They may just tell you to send in the old one anyway, but you may as well let them know that the screen is cracked, since they are going to find out when they get it. Hopefully since you already have a return authorization, it wont matter...
Has anyone noticed it seems to be easier to get a replacement since they EOL'd the Streak?

Maybe they're trying to clear out stock?
I had no problem sending it back with the cracked glass as long as the problem had nothing to do with the glass. Now the damned thing is working, so I have an issue with it.
I really don't understand this phone. I didn't change anything and it is like a different phone.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Oh, I thought the screen cracked after you called them.
Nevermind. As long as you disclosed the cracked screen, don't hesitate to send it back. If it was bad once, no reason to think it wont be again.
There are definitely some flaky ones.
From some posts I've read, it does seem as though they are being unusually friendly about returns lately. Prolly just my imagination...

Oh, I never said I did that. I don't want people to think they are knowingly taking back units with cracked screens. The tech didn't ask if it had ever been dropped and I didn't see the point in volunteering the information as it had nothing to do with the problem I was having. I know that is not exactly taking the high road, but as I said, the screen isn't why I'm exchanging it. I considered swapping my cracked screen and the unbroken one from the replacement and sending my flaky phone back with the good screen, but they would probably notice that the phone had been dismantled and assume that is the source of the problem. I'm between a rock and a hard place here, but it's my own fault. I'm probably going to end up with a bill for the replacement phone, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I'm mostly just astonished at how freaking strange the behavior of this phone is. It was working fine then lost its mind for about three weeks and then decided that it was going to start working the way it is supposed to again with no interference from me. It was flaky in the morning, I did nothing to it, and that afternoon it started behaving itself.
Well, it froze up good yesterday. Tried everything short of swinging a dead cat over my head in a cemetary at midnight and got it working again, just in time to retire it.
When I got home the replacement was waiting for me. Smooth as silk. I played the hell out of my new favorite time sucking game last night (Stupid Zombies) and not a single hiccup. I'd love to lose some of the extra apps, but I think I am going to leave well enough alone this time. Now I need to find out how much Dell is going to bill me for returning a unit with a cracked screen, but I'll worry about that when it happens.
Heres my situation. i Have a thunderbolt rooted bamf etc etc and i went out and bought the tridenteer battery/case combo. and i love it dont get me wrong i've actually been able to have my phone on for longer then a day..
anyways, i've had this problem where it will randomally freeze and the screen will go off. all 4 bottom lights of the buttons will stay lit and the amber light will too. until i take the battery out, then it obviously all goes off. now i've been able to put the battery back in and have it power up. this has happened 3 times now in the last week. makes no sense to me. and it happened tonight while i was out running, i use it for music with headphones when i do and it just froze right in the middle of Korn..
so i guess what im asking is why this is happening, and why did it decide to start right now? i've done no mods and i've had the same bamf setup for 5 months or so now so i havent been flashing different things. it seems mechanical to me. i cant get my phone to come back on now.
Definitely sounds like a hardware failure. Happens eventually with every electronic device.

Yeah probably man, i just went to the verizon store and the guy didnt really care to hear what i had to say, he just ordered me a new thunderbolt. glad he didnt check anything like the fact it was rooted etc lol
This is my second Rezound (I got this as a replacement from Verizon). Everything has been working fine for the past 2 months, but recently the screen won't turn on at random times. The screen seems to get stuck in the off mode and I have to do a battery pull to get it on again. Everything else is working when this happens, like I can hear people calling and hear emails coming in, but I can't do much without the screen! I noticed that it happens often when I'm in phone calls... the proximity sensor won't work after the first time I hold it to my head, the screen just goes off and then stays off. Sometimes (rarely) the screen will turn on when I press the power button, but then turn off as soon as the screen is touched (which makes me want to break the phone).
I hope this makes sense. Any ideas from anyone or I am on to my third replacement phone? Will they even replace my phone again? I bought it back in December.
They will replace it again, and it does sound like a hardware issue.
Sounds like you need a replacement

happened on my incredible on a few custom roms, and then it happened on my rezound stock not rooted too. it's an HTC issue, probably.
had the exact same problem on my rezound. busted proximity sensor. Verizon replaced it with no hassles.
Thanks for all the input so far people! I'll be getting in touch with Verizon.
I got my new replacement Rezound today and now have a new problem where the phone will not allow data connections. I finally got Verizon to let me switch to a different phone. This will be my first non HTC phone since 2004, starting with the i-mate JAM. I am so glad to be done with the Rezound finally.
damn sounds like u have bad luck with thus phone

I was having this problem consistently too with both GB and ICS when I was using custom kernels. So far, only the 2 most recent 3.0 ICS leak kernels have stabilized the problem to the point where I haven't had a reboot or freeze in a couple weeks.
So my bro's had an Atrix for a little over a year.
Some time back, it started exhibiting this behaviour where the whole screen would just become totally unresponsive.
Searching around, I see issues where people lose responsiveness with a fraction of their touch screen, or the entire screen starts spazzing out with all these presses and swipe actions the user did not enter...
...but his just seems to have these periods. He'll be stuck at the lock screen from anywhere between 1 minute and a whole day... I can usually get it to work with random rapidfire hardware commands... and when it works, it works completely for a certain amount of time.
Thing is, that's only temporary, and the touch-screen ends up going back to an unresponsive state.
Any clue what's going on, or how to resolve it?
What's the software is he currently on? Is the phone bootloader unlocked and/or rooted?

You know what's (not so) funny about this? All of the things that you think are causing this sound really complicated. Is my phone corrupt? hardware defective?? etc etc.
You know what I found it caused this behavior after numerous factory resets and weeks of research and tweaks to my phone?
The f-ing goddam screen protector.
Yep, that's right. The over-priced, highly (over)rated $20 iShields brand one. I know for a fact that was the cause, after I figured it out and started talking to other atrix owners (minus the liar fanboys that lurk in every forum saying "works fine for me derp!" whenever someone dares to suggest a product has flaws).
Problem immediately went away, forever. I've gone naked since May /11 without a single scratch. IMO screen protectors on gorilla glass is for people who wear a seat belt in a car wash. I'm not sure, but I suspect the problem happens when the screen protector starts to age, and/or when it gets really warm. I also suspect it's a problem with certain phones and the types of touchscreens on those phones not playing nice with screen protectors. Started happening on mine after just one month.

Just to offer some backstory, this started a couple months ago back when he just had the stock AT&T rom (2.3.X or 2.2.X I think? I can't recall clearly) During one of it's "working" periods (last week), I unlocked his bootloader and flashed it with CM9...
Probably won't mean much since the problem existed before I unlocked+CM9'ed it, but while it's not freaking out, I can give you some numbers:
• Model Number: MB860
• Android Version: 4.0.3
• Baseband Version: N_01.77.15P
• Kernel Version: [email protected] #47
• CyanogenMod Version: 9.0.0-RC0-olympus-KANG

Yeh, I have had this problem with screen protectors interfering with capacitive screens before, I am now using some really cheap protectors (5 for £3) and have had no such problems since and have a good bit of pocket money left .

ah ok in that case, I have nothing else, I'm only good for ranting. GL!
My touchscreen randomly does these freak outs and stops working:
Usually for me it is caused when the phone is really warm (like on the charger in the car) or when my hands are sweaty (also could just be the the phone is warm in this case as well)
Once it's done with its freak out, I turn off the screen (my power button still works) and clean off the screen with my shirt, wipe the sweat off my hands and turn it back on...everything is then fine.
Also, with my old phone (dell streak) if I kept the phone in my pocket with the screen facing towards my leg it would exhibit this behavior (probably again a case of the screen becoming really warm) but if I kept it screen out it was fine.
I have the same exact problem and have gone back to my Captivate because I couldn't figure it out.

News on this? Here's my experience.
Any news on this, guys? I'm going insane. Here's my experience: I used to get these touchscreen-stops now and then but then they started getting more and more often. What I do to make them stop for a while is a clean restore, that is wiping boot, system, preinstall, cache, userdata with fastboot before installing a new ROM or restoring from backup. Whenever I do that, it comes back to life. If I flash a new ROM without all those wipes, it doesn't work. What sucks so bad is that, even though that fixes the problem, it's only temporary. It starts again after a few weeks. There is NO way this is hardware, and there's also NO way we can't find a solution for this!!!! Come on, guys!!! HELP US OUT, PLEASE!!!!!!!
Have you tried the raindrop fix? I was having similar problems and it worked for me.

A buddy of mine had really bad touch screen issues and had to send back for warranty.

I'm having the same issue
I'm having the exact same issue. It sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Anywhere from one minute to a whole day, everything you described exactly. No screen protector. I wiped it once and it worked temporarily, but it's back to the old sporadic unresponsiveness again.
I'm still not convinced that it isn't a hardware issue. I'm going to buy a T5 Torx Screwdriver and open her up and see if one of the connections is loose. Has anyone else done this?
I'll post tomorrow night with my results.
Here is a handy trick to determine if your digitizer it going out.
1. Find an appliance like a cable set top box, AV receiver or computer for example
2. Lay your phone face down in the warm air that emits from devices like this.
3. Leave it alone for about 10 to 15 minutes.
4.Pick your phone up and perform some finger swipe heavy tasks.
If you notice its a lot more sensitive like you remember when you first got it then you have a digitizer that is going bad. If nothing changes then its most likely software related.
Okay so I took it apart (removed the motherboard, disconnected the radio and 3 cables, then put everything back together. It's not fixed 100% but it's a lot more consistent than it was. youtube dot com/watch?v=kxuF_73YIIY

Could be the ribbon behind the digitizer, if its loose or moves it can kill all response to touch. You may have to replace your digitizer to fix this.

I'm dying here
I opened it up like the video explained. Everything looked OK. I used a heat gun at 50 C to eliminate any trace of humidity and put back everything in its place. Then, I did a full wipe and a new ROM flash. STILL NOTHING!!! This phone is a little over a year old! This is not possible :crying: Any new ideas???? THANKS!!!!

I would also suspect the digitizer. I replaced mine for $45 (frame pre attached attached highly recommended).
The connections are very small, so there is much that can go wrong while doing this kind of brain surgery and the ribbons will rip easily.

Same problem here. It is like some Ghost is operating it without my permission
Sometimes feels like is should hit the phone on the wall.
I know its not gonna help.
Anybody there who has solution for this
I've had this issue a good handful of times now. My screen will randomly spazz out where a ton of motions and clicks are happening. Usually turning the screen off and wiping the screen fixes.it, so I've figure the screen was sensitive to oil from our fingers. Today it has happened twice where I couldn't stop it though. Even restarting didn't help once, until going back to the phone 30 minutes later it had calmed down. Anyone else have this problem? I'm thinking about going back to verizon to try another one.
I say take it back. I had a phone do that just not as bad and got a warranty replacement.

Well, took it back. Took about 15 minutes to go in and exchange it for a new one. They did look for superuser, but my phone hadn't been rooted yet so I didn't have that.
Well crap, now this one's speaker doesn't sound right. Everything that is in any way "high pitched" sounds very tinny, like the speaker is blown or something. I started up N64oid to see how bad it was with game music and such and it's extremely noticeable. I'm hoping I can easily exchange this one, but I have a feeling this time it's going to take a lot of arguing...
Lost touch
Well had to take my phone back to bestbuy today due to the screen not working without the s pen. touch would not unlock screen. UGH i knew something was wrong when texting and the l o p and back button would stick or had issues. I am really mad, but best buy hooked me up. I have a new one on order coming Thursday. Let's hope the phone does not have OTA on it.
