Is there a Rom out there that is 2.1 and has the dialer like the moto droid? if not is there a way to swap them out.
I'm pretty sure that the Moto Droid dialer is just the stock 2.1 dialer. You just need to grab a ROM that's not sense based. Id reccomend ErisLightningBolt. It's based off of Cyanogen 5 which is a tweaked version of stock 2.1

thanks i'll check it out, the dialer i speak of has call log , contacts, favs, up top and the keypad on bottom.

I'm unhappy with the dialer on the KaosFroyo v28, because it doesn't have the smart dial feature that 2.1 had.
My device is rooted. I realize that you have to replace the .apks in /system/apps. Which .apks do I need to replace? Contacts.apk? ContactsProvider.apk? Phone.apk? PhoneConfig.apk? Anything else?
Is it safe to push a 2.1 dialer to KaosFroyo v28? I like 2.1's stock dialer, unless I need to be running Sense. If it isn't safe, any recommended dialers with the smart dialing feature (not to be mistaken with speed dial).

Why not just download Dialer One from the market. Works great, has a couple of nice themes and free. Just set it as default after you install. Sense based .apks from the sense 2.1 ROMS won't work on Froyo v28.
It would make sense if it had t9 built in, but it doesn't. So why?
They should really implement that btw. I know it exists in custom roms.

I am currently running CM9. But, am facing a few issues. So, was thinking of going back to stock ROM for a while. I love the AOSP look and love the CM9 dialer.
Almost all the stock based themed ROM's are having a themed stock dialer.
[ which doesn't even have contacts list inside, it is very annoying !! ]..
Some ROM's, I see are having AOSP dialler, but it doesn't have the CM9 functionalities, in particular Smart T9 dialler.
In addition, the stock call animation is present. [v.v.ugly].
The AOSP / CM9 call animation is so much better.
Sorry, if this feels as if I am hating on touchwiz, but take this as my opinion and not a fact. [ I love some touchwiz features, which I am not getting in CM9].
I know that earlier the Resurrection ROM was having CM9 dialer, but westcrip seems to have moved on to AOKP ..
So, please help me find out any ICS themed stock ROM, with CM9 dialer like functionality.
this is not a ROM suggestion but...
You can try an app called exDialer and download the ICS theme for it. It looks a lot like the CM9 dialer and has the T9 dialer.

Thanks for the suggestion. But, I prefer using the stock one instead of third party applications. [ Have seen that the stock application , keeps on using the memory, under the system application, and I understand that it is a bigger problem on my older phone, SGS, which had .v.little memory. ]
But still would prefer the stock.

is there any rom with t9 dialer having full contact name search support. like in Resurrection Remix Rom of SGS2? i really miss that dialer on all custom roms of SGS3? that dialer can search whole name, unlike sammy dialer which only search first name. If there is a dialer can it be installed seperatly? i think CM9 has this one but CM is in nightly stage
I tried cm9, and dialer works perfectly but i lost all the good stuff other sammy based roms have, like swipe to call, copy paste contact details. So can cm9 dialer be ported to other roms, like an apk file?

I'm running stock TW rooted (not ME7) w/TWRP, and am looking for a way to flash out the TW dialer for the AOSP dialer. Anyone know of a way to do this?

Don't know if you're interested in alternate app options, but the Touchpal dialer is a powerful and configurable dialer, includes T9 and quick dial, etc.
Very nice dialer, the one I use on all ROMs.
I'm looking for a fundamental replacement. Am also using a nice user installable app, but don't like that the phone often switches back to the TW dialer in certain circumstances, and also for incoming/outgoing calls.
