Sorry if this has already been posted, but I searched for a few days and haven't found a solution.
I removed the HTC Sense UI and found it to make my Hero run much, much smoother. But, I am missing a few of the HTC Widgets. Namely, Music, Calender, and Twitter.
Is it possible to still use HTC widgets while keeping the simple Android UI? As I understand, I'm not removing the HTC Sense, only the makeover. I hoped it would still allow me to use the widgets.
Thank you.
The way I understand it, HTC Sense is a special program that serves as a base for interfacing the HTC widgets with the Android OS. Its not really a makeover, its a separate program. Android "Home", aHome, GDE, Open Gesture, and all other home replacements are actually apps that act as your home screen. Only the HTC Sense is compatible with the HTC Widgets, as far as I know. I could be wrong, however.
I don't think you can...
Have you updated your phone to the latest official ROM? I too had turned off the Sense UI for the speed advantage, but was missing alot of the Sense UI features. I upgraded the ROM (official) and it sure made the Sense UI very nice.

Yes, and no! Unlike other home replacements, with HTC Sense, HTC have also modified parts of the base OS, so Sense goes quite deep. Whist you can effectively turn of the launcher part of Sense, and replace some of the HTC modified apps with their vanilla Android equivalent, some parts will still remain.

Well, because disabling sense UI also disabled some features, that could be why I'm seeing such an improvement. I'm going back to Sense UI and tinker some more to see if I can find what causes the slight hiccups. The only widgets I use are HTC calender, music, and last.fm. Only two panels also.
One day I was listening to last.fm through my car stereo via Bluetooth. I then needed to make a call. I could not get the last.fm widget to pause at all. Then I figured I'd just make a call to possibly force it to pause. The buttons wouldn't respond. A few minutes later the music stopped and I could hear someone talking on the other end, but they couldn't hear me. I figured I just overloaded the Hero with what I can do on it.
I stopped having Bloo and Peep check for updates. I think that could be a problem, so when I want to see if I have any FB or Twitter updates, I just log into the apps myself. I'm also using Task Manager which is a lot better on the system compared to Taskiller.
I am currently running the OTA 2.1 rooted rom.. been liking it, but not LOVING sense anymore.. seems to just lag a lot.
Im trying to find a rom that has the following:
The HTC weather/clock widget. (i love this.. dont know why)
Working google maps/nav
working Live wallpapers with jcase's opengl patch.
working/non crashing google voice.
facebook integration / maybe friendstream?
flan lock screen (or working lock 2.0.. I found with sense and lock 2.0 it was always buggy/laggy when the phone would ring.. no matter how many times I tried to unlock it i would miss the call)
has anyone seen this all in a rom? would love some suggestions.

well you cannot get rid of sense and have the htc weather widget. there are vanilla roms (which removes ALL sense related items) but you would lose the weather you want. there is also a senseless theme you can apply to any rom to remove sense related stuff. errors i have seen with jcase's opengl patch mess up navi. i had lwp for a few days and removed it as it just eats away battery and does lag the phone up.
you can get the n1 lock screen on any ROM as all you have to do is delete the htclockscreen.apk and it will give you that. you just need to flash to all the differnt ROMS, make NAND backups of the ones you like and find one that fits you and then keep it. i flash almost daily as these devs keep putting sick ass ROMs out, but I am currently at aloyious v6 as i need nav and dont care for lwp. but he does have a version out that does have lwp and not nav. so you do have a choice.
So Far today I have flashed:
Vanilla Rom - didnt have the htc clock.. I really like that.. After reading some more I came across the same conclusion, if I want the htc clock.. I need sense.
loaded up jcase's patch for opengl.. ran wallpapers for about 20 min, and yep.. had enough... I guess I do really like sense?
EvilEris1.1 - google login bug - that was a show stopper for me, other than that it seemed fast.
Sensable 2.0 - Currently playing with and the only issue I have had so far is that the text in the dialer is grey and you can barely read it.
Im going to make a nandroid backup of this one and try aloyious v6
IS there a way to name the nandroid backups? it uses the date as the name. would love something a little more intuative.
Thanks for the response and the tips.
Yes, you can change the name. Just plugin your phone via USB and hit mount and then go to the NAND directory. There will be another dir and then just open that one and then all your NAND backups will be there. I name mine after each one as I cannot remember which ROM I flashed before which.
Also, dont forget to wipe data and dalvik when going back to a NAND backup.

Ok, cool.. I didnt know if it needed the DIR name to be the date in order to work.. I was working off a spreadhseet with
THIS DIR = THIS ROM
Sooo much easier now
Thank you again.
Seeing how the time is on the lockscreen and also in the not. bar, I decided that I could live without the flip clock taking up half of my home screen. Here's what I did.
Flashed Eris_Official 0.81T2
Flashed Senless patch
falshed Nexus One patch
flashed Nexus Launcher Wtih LP's patch.
Now I enjoy a mostly vanilla rom, with the HTC dialer, nexus launcher and live wallpapers and it's smooth as butter and bug free.

How about google maps navigation? I keep reading about the nav bug with live wallpapers.
I've heard that too, but haven't noticed a problem.

Alright, so I am getting really sick of the stock ROM on my HD2. I disabled the SenseUI and turned on the Windows Default scrolly text interface. I hate SenseUI, it is way too busy, and I don't use my phone to check stocks or weather, so I don't care about having those things on my start screen.
I went searching through the pages and it seems that every ROM here is using Sense as it's base. I will open up two dozen tabs and go through them quickly as I will X them out the moment I see that flippy clock thing. Are there any ROMs that don't have any resemblance to Sense at all? I just want something simple and clean.
(Edit: And I didn't mean to post this here. This was supposed to go in the ROM Development subforum.)

1- cht2 is as far from sense as you can get. your imagination is your limitation.
2- titanium is none-sense based
3- there is a maxsense series of roms
Why don't you just disable sense in the settings/personal menu?
This should give you clean windows. Also, there are a number of other options than Sense but these are a cab install not on a rom.

I already said that I did that. But even with Sense disabled the stock ROM still sucks. My phone will freeze for, like, 4 minutes every time I get a text message for instance.

Been trying to get the HTC Sense UI of my Wildfire with no luck so far, i've looked up how to do it and followed the steps:
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Find HTC Sense, "Clear defaults", then press the home button and is should give me the option to choose whether to boot up HTC sense or normal android, but I get no such thing, just loads HTC Sense back up.
Thanks for any help.
you also have to click "force stop" right below "clear defaults"
then press the home button!
Yepp done that, doesn't work.
If your on official rom like me, you will only get the HTC Sense launcher pre-installed as default, there is no stock Android launcher that you can switch between. That is why when you clear defaults you do not get an option (because there is only 1). Also just in case you wanted to know there is no way to install the stock launchers via 3rd party sites, doesn't work for some reason, Instead I recommend LauncherPro which is free on the market, once installed, press the home button, and this time you'll get an option popup! Hope I helped.

I thought it might have been something like that. I'll try launcher Pro, I tried the Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4 launcher from the other thread on this site and that's quite good.
Is there anyway of just getting rid of HTC Sense and just using Launcher Pro or something similar, or do they need HTC Sense to be installed to work?...
You solved my original question, so thanks for that.
This worked on the initial batches of the Wildfire, but, it didn't work anymore after that. So, now, as said, its only Sense Launcher. I am not getting exactly what your query is. By installing a launcher like LP/ADW, you will only get rid of the Sense Launcher and the Sense Widgets. But, the rest of the Sense framework will remain intact, and will function as normal. (Like the camera, contacts, messaging, dialer etc)
If you want to get rid of Sense in its entirety, your best bet would be an AOSP Custom ROM like DevNull/Cyanogenmod7 etc.
Yeah, I want to get rid of all of Sense, so i'll look into all this custom ROM stuff.
Thanks for the help.
/thread.
Good day techies. This is quite a time i have reocurring problem on my HTC Desire S with HTC Sense forceclosing/restarting (screen with HTC logo, then "Loading" ...) usually when tabbing or pressing "Home Screen". I tried clearing cache and data of HTC Sense process and in conclusion nothing helped. Installing latest updates and HTC Sense 3 didn't help for my Android 2.3.3
Haven't tried factory reset because it will probably require a lot of tinkering which i don't have time to go into so i would like to know if installing any kind of launcher such as GoLauncher, ADW Launcher EX (read it is faster than others) which are available on Google Play would fix the problem.
Thanks for responses!
Sense Restarting
HTC Sense UI consumes a lot of resources like RAM so if you open some apps simultaneously and then press home screen, SENSE has to reload because the device is out of RAM. You mean 768MB of RAM my device has is not enough? And what is the use of installing additional launcher if HTC Sense is still consming RAM? What is way out of this?
Actually, when I ran Sense and used a third party launcher, HTC Sense didn't run in the background. I removed all widgets, apps, shortcuts, etc from the screen and set ADW Ex as my default home screen. My phone ran more smoothly and I never caught Sense open. It's worth a shot.
Also remember that Sense 3.0 uses more ram than earlier versions of Sense.

It didn't run at all, when I'd go into manage applications, it never showed in running apps and never had a force stop button available. When I used the Sense launcher, it showed in running apps and I could stop it from manage applications.
When you install a third party launcher, you'll be given the option to set it as the default home. Once it has installed, hit the home button. You'll be given a dialog asking which launcher you want to use. Select the set as default button & choose the new launcher. If you accidentally choose the wrong one or need to switch back, go to manage applications and find whichever you have set as default. You'll have the option to clear defaults, it's near the bottom. You can also install one of the Home Switcher apps and manage them from there.
Downgrading to a previous version of Sense would require flashing a different rom. If your device has never had anything other than Sense 3.0 then you won't have a Sense 1.0 or 2.1 rom. If the phone used to have an earlier version of Sense, then there will be roms available for it. If your stock rom is 3.0, then going to an earlier version may require going to an earlier version of Android as well. That depends on how the updates have come out.
All I'm saying is that it's worth a shot. I suggest ADW Ex, but if you don't want to pay for it without knowing if it's going to solve your problem, try the free ADW or any other launcher. If it works you can then look at other launchers. If it doesn't work and you prefer Sense, just uninstall the third party launcher or switch back to Sense.
I prefer ADW Ex over Sense as you have many more options. A lot of people like Go Launcher, but I didn't care for it. You might want to give it a shot. LauncherPro is kinda outdated and is missing features. The choice is really up to you, I just think that you might have better luck with a different launcher. Just know that you can't use the Sense widgets with anything other than Sense. If you miss the widgets, check out Android Pro Widgets (APW).

Install GO EX LAUNCHER. Press HOME button from anywhere within the OS and it will ask you which launcher you want to go to. Select the one you want. You can also use task manager widget for Go EX LAUNCHER to clear RAM and sometimes shut down HTC SENSE LAUNCHER. HTC SENSE LAUNCHER reloads when you select it as the launcher after pressing home button...
