hi is it possible to connect a printer to the hero so i could print boarding passes form online book in
mifran
I'm gunna go with no. No you can't... yet
i'd go for the answer no as well.
Certainly no by Bluetooth, as it doesn;t have the bluetooth printing profile.
It's not possible at the moment, but someone(s) could bring CUPS to Android to allow for network printing over the WiFi network. Of course, your printer would have to be shared on your LAN for this to work, plus I have no idea what sort of effort would be involved in bringing CUPS support over to a mobile phone.
I'd sure be interested in seeing this happen though. It'd be pretty cool to print off an email from your phone. My old Dell Axim had an IR port, which I could actually use to print at work, as our HP LaserJet had IR as well. I thought that was the bee's knees back then.
EDIT: To more accurately address the original post: You will never actually be able to connect a printer to the Hero with a USB cable. This is due to the fact that both a printer and the Hero are USB "peripherals." A USB connection needs a USB "host" at one end of the cable. If you could somehow find a USB cable that would plug into the Hero and a printer, both devices would be waiting for a computer to do something at the other end of the cable.
ok thank you gents
yet another bluetooth failing of the htc setup even my motorola v3 could send files over bluetooth

s'ok.
we're just stuck in the same situation the iphone was for 2 years! But note that it is GOOGLE that left this out of the OS, not HTC. Yes it's annoying, but at least lay the blame firmly where it is due. HTC may screw things up, but let's not let them take all the credit!
but hey, when this 2.1 update comes out, that should hopefully fix it.
and geez, you actually bought a v3? :-O

yes i bought it second hand for £30 and modded it with firmware from modmymoto while it was being replaced with the v3i and it has served me well i should have done a bit more research because i mainly went with the hero because of its wifi internet which is ok but i needed to be able to logon to airlines for flight info and boarding passes.
mifran
I know this doesn't really answer the question, but about a half dozen or so airlines here in the US have started using paperless boarding passes. I've checked in for flights a number of times from my phone without having to print the boarding pass. They just scan the barcode off the phone's screen. Is that an option for you?

I was curious if any on here have used this app? I love the developer (have his SpeedHUD app)..... If anyone can does use it, I would love your opinion. I am hesitant to spend much on a bluetooth OBD tool. I think the one he recommends is around $100.
here is a link to his site for those interested: Torque
Here is a description (from his site linked above) also:
Torque is an engine diagnostics application for Android that allows you to directly monitor your car engine control unit (ECU) and retrieve various information from the sensors connected to it as well as use your phones internal GPS and accelerometer sensors to graph other information such as acceleration
Torque can be used to view any stored fault codes on your vehicles ECU, then, after a mechanic fixing the fault, it also can clear the fault codes allowing you to clear the ‘Check Engine’ light warning on your dashboard
Torque can use a multitude of OBD adapters, ranging from the cheap (and slightly buggy) adapters you can find on ebay, to the more reliable PLX Devices Kiwi Bluetooth and OBDKey which are the amongst the best.
That's pretty damn cool... I'm not a car enthusiast, but even so I kind of want to get one of those BT adapters and try it out
^ yeah, same boat. I have a bad gas cap so my check engine light is CONSTANTLY on. Now I just ignore it because "I KNOW" that's the cause... heaven forbid something else be wrong with my car and I've just ignored it. Would be especially nice since this app also lets you CLEAR THE CODE (no more check engine light).
Really need to find a good/cheap BT adapter that will work with this app!!!
I'm interested in this too. The only thing I wonder about is the Bluetooth connection. There was a thread somewhere about wii remotes not working with some app on the market and the explanation was the Bluetooth version we have (3.0) would require considerable changes to make it work. I don't want to fork out the cash only to find out they are not compatible. I read that thread weeks ago, so I don't remember the particulars. Hopefully, someone will chime in that has already tried it.
Hmm. I've had no issues connecting with a few bluetooth devices... Never really had that concern, hope there are no issues. Wonder if you could return an item for that...
I was going to ask in his forum if anyone has tried it on a Galaxy S of any sort, but I never got the password e-mail. I'll try again later. Here's the thread that is making me balk. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought.
Bluetooth 3.0 Compatible Controllers for Gaming?
I just got the cheapest BT ODB2 dongle from eBay (<$30), and it works fine on my 2010 Silverado HD. The throttle position sensor didn't seem to work right (my foot does just as well ), but the boost sensor seems like it may have...? I only drove around the block - we'll see when I'm getting on the freeway tomorrow. Being a new truck, there are no SES lights for me to check. Also, my truck has BT for the stereo, and there didn't seem to be any issues being connected to both.
In short, it works just fine for what it seems to be for (simple guages & such).

A new $10 gas cap and a $25 AutoZone code reader would probably be cheaper and easier.
The gas caps for my car go bad every few months, it's just a design flaw I think. With all of the additional features the app offers + the cool factor, I think its worth it. May give one of the cheaper cables a try.
down8, got a link for the cable you got man?
Awesome + Finally!
I've been waiting for one of these to come out for some time. I have had a BT adapter in my car, as I used it with my Nokia N810 (using a software called CARMAN). It has some +/-'s, but this new software (Torque) is simply amazing.
Ended up using the free version, but purchased as soon as I got home. Will do some more testing and report soon.
I think it is pretty cool app, even though I can scan the codes for free at an AutoZone, but if you mod your car the app will come handy when you need to setup your CAI to by-pass ECU, etc.
I've been playing around with this app using a $30 Chinese bt dongle from ebay. It works great, you don't need the $100 one unless you plan to use it for pro level diagnostics (which some people do). It's got a ton of cool functions, the least of which is being able to read and reset fault codes. But I use for that too. It may not be able to read all the OBD output from your car, for example, it won't list the turbo boost for my Volvo, but that is vehicle dependent. Check out the forums on the dev's site; lots of good info there. Btw, I'm using the paid version.

Wow the developer needs to get on board with CobbTuning for the import enthusiast guys. This tool would be awesome to flash tuned performance maps. My accessport cost me $600+. Pretty awesome. Shame you couldn't just use the sensor to the micro USB.

Sorry for the delay. Here's a link to the one I purchased. OBDII Scanner - seller autodoctor007. It shipped pretty fast from China.
wow, this is a great idea. i have not tried it yet, as i dont have an obdII to BT, but this looks awesome.
On a side note, as i dont have the obdII/BT connection yet, I do have an OBDII to USB cable. Can this or another app use that? I guess I would have to get a USB to microUSB adaptor to plug into phone.... how about any computer programs that will use the ODB to USB adaptor to monitor car data/engine lights?

The cheap chinese OBD II don't work with all vehicles so be wary about buying one of the these. I bought one for $25 on ebay and they don't connect with Ford's interface, however it did connect to my Dodge truck.

No, it's not possible. If you have a dvd player or something that can accept a usb mass storage device, then you could play videos from your eris that way. However, our phone does not have the capability of doing video out.
If you have DLNA equipment in your home theater (or you have a home network that your laptop is connected to) you can use Twonky Server on your Eris & it'll show up as a media share in your network.
Twonky is in the market. I've used it for months & it's great.
You could plug the Eris in to charge it while it's feeding the video, too.
We are all looking into this I think, and The real awnser is YES!. If you buy a micro usb to video cable they sell them for the Samsun here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=454333
Now we just need a few good devs to look into making the tvout.apk and tvout.odex from the incredible to work for th Eris.
It should work if you get everything set up correctly, maybe using KAOSLEGENDARY rom. After it is set up and using the cable wih the correct apk's I think this is totaly possible

htc touch must have android 2.2 or some video out put, because the youtube video shows the video out apk.
Just wanted to touch base to see if there potentially may be any interest in something like this? I have one on the way for review and to see if they even work with our gTab. Rumor was the price point was going to be around $20 - $25.
When I get it tested I will post the findings and see what you guys think!
[EDIT] - so far I can't get it to work. I've tried just throwing it in while it's on as well as having it powered down (like the dock) to allow the DNS to propagate. No dice so far. I'll check with the supplier to see if there is an app to make it work.

Interested in outcome but not really looking to buy. WiFi is solid enough and with existing dock if I need LAN (haven't yet) I have it along with the HDMI and other.
Thanks!
When would you use this?
I'm trying to imagine a time it would come in handy. Ideas?
Maybe it uses a kernel module that isn't included in your kernel. I don't know what ROM/kernel you are using (I use stock), but possibly the pl2303 module. If you have a Linux PC handy, you can check for some info. Before plugging it into the Linux box, open a terminal and run this command:
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Then plug it in, and see what it tells you. Use Ctrl + c to end it.
You can also check which modules are loaded with this command, new modules are at the top of the list:
Code:
lsmod
I also am not sure if I would ever use something like that. My ZT-180 came with something similar, but with a miniUSB end, and I have never found the need to even try it.

Where hardware is related, a VM may not give the needed results. That is because a VM may use it's own drivers.
If you have an Ubuntu installation CD, you can boot that as a live CD. It will run only on system memory, so it may be a bit laggy. That will work just like an installed Linux system.
Any progress on this?
I am very interested to find a USB to ethernet adapter for my Gtab. I do a lot of networking with switchs and ISP providers. It would be awesome if this little USB device would work. Any updates?
probably driver related
This looks like one of the adaptors that have been around for the Wii console for a while.
Clemsyn's kernel has a bunch of USB drivers added that are removed (or are back level) in the stock Viewsonic kernel. I suggest that you give it a go.
Pershoot's kernel is a more involved process to select the bits that you want. So I'd start by trying Clemsyn's first.

I have a dell laptop that I recently dropped. The wireless stopped working. Thankfully, everything else seems fine. I had to go out and buy a wireless usb adapter.
>>I have a dell laptop that I recently dropped. The wireless stopped working.
Did you pop open the panel on the bottom and check to see if the little wifi riser card didn't just pop out of its slot?
May not apply in your case, but sometimes the Modem/LAN/Wifi is on a little card that plugs into a header on the motherboard. There's usually an access panel on the bottom to get at it - check that it's properly seated and all connectors are secure, etc.
You can also usually swap them out if they die. Check Ebay.

I could see this being handy for a road warrier to watch streamed content in a hotel if he or she didn't want to bring the heavier dock along. Often time wifi is sketchy at best in some locations but many hotels were wired with CAT5 to each room and have a cord curled up in the desk. I often break out my CAT5 adapter to string two cords together so my laptop can rest on the bed and I have faster speeds (and frankly a more secure connection with my VPN) while resting against the many pillows. Beats sitting at the desk with the dock propped up.
Let us know how you make out getting this to work.
Anyone get this to work? I just ordered a gtab and it would be great to have a wired ethernet port for configuring many of the network devices I deal with on a daily basis.

Thank you. I would really appreciate it.
You have to edit a file to enable the ethernet.

*Edit* My apologies. This is a fix for the Malata dock w/ethernet. No idea if it works for the adapter or not.
Alternative usb/lan adapter
I found a USB/LAN adapter for android tablets on euogo dot com for $10. Do a search for this item number: TPGA-ULNA
If you do a google search, "usb to lan adapter for android", many other brands / models also appear.
Does anyone think any of them will work with the Gtab?
Considering the rumor that the dock may be discontinued and that an HDMI cable is on the way, a USB/LAN adapter for the Gtab would be easier to carry around than the dock / power adapter combo.
Warning: 1st time poster = NOOB. Pls. be kind.
You may want to check my posts on making Ethernet on the Dock work. If the device works at all, it should be the same process.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14367749&postcount=41
I could use this at work where they won't allow wireless connections.
As network admin, I will definitely love to have opportunity to connect my tablet to LAN network.
Pretty often it happens, that I am installing new WiFi routers, so for initial config, I need to grab my 17" laptop and connect by cable. It would be much more comfortable to just use my tablet ;-)
How hard would it be to get something like this to work with the Rezound?
I know with the Galaxy Nexus you can plug a microUSB to USB adapter in and use flash drives and external hard drives if you're using the right kernel.
I'm wanting something like this because it would be nice to plug into the network at work and ping printers and stuff like that with my phone instead of finding a computer and logging in.

Not in Gingerbread
USB host mode is only supported in Honeycomb or above, so this won't be possible without ICS on this phone.
I'm not sure if anyone has made an ICS kernel that supports USB host mode.
Also, in addition to compatible software, the phone also needs compatible hardware, which the Rezound might not have.
If you don't have wireless access buy an airport express.

Apparently Chainfire tested a bunch of devices and listed the Rezound as incompatible.
http://usbhost.chainfire.eu/
He tested both Gingerbread and ICS, and none of them worked.
(Although those are all probably stock or modified Sense kernels, so maybe there's hope for AOSP? )

It doesn't totally defeat the purpose, but considerably complicates things. I'd sooner carry a laptop than break out a wireless router, fire it up, make sure it won't interfere with anything on the wired or wireless side (could be tough to do if you have to log in wireless), then ping/ssh/<your-protocol-here> through that device to get to the device I'm looking for.
With a USB dongle, plug it into the phone, into the wall, and do what you need to do.
Yeah the USB thing would be nice.
You are over complicating the router. Most routers are plug and play nowadays so Ethernet into existing network, and power is all you need with wireless freedom.
It would be even more to carry with me and more money than I'm willing to spend. I was just curious to know how hard it would be to plug my phone straight into the network so I can ping printers or telnet into stuff at work

Ethernet word be nice, but it doesn't exist. I was just providing an alternative.
I would be careful about plugging things into the work network. Some IT managers are rather...protective of their domains and set up extensive security, to the point where the particular port you plug into may shut down if it recognizes an unauthorized device. I work for the Marine Corps, and aside from the fact it's a punishable offense to connect an unauthorized device to the Navy/Marine Corps Intranet (and attached information systems), the switches will immediately disable a port with an unrecognized device connected.
