Hey does anybody know how to change the aspect ratio on videos streamed through AllShare? When ever I play a extra widescreen movie, it stretches it out and makes it 16x9. Any way to change this? Thanks.
You can't. Lame, huh? I worked around this by changing the aspect ratio on the TV.
Edit: You guys are talking about the other way round, huh? Phone to TV rather than server to phone. If so, NM, lol.
Does Allshare use the standard Video UI? I was all sorts of frustrated with stretching on 4:3 videos, and then I realized that little square button on the right changes it between stretch, shrink to fit, and original. I haven't messed with Allshare much (our wifi is not very good =/) so I dunno if it uses the regular video player.
I was actually talking about watching on the phone from a server. It appears to use the standard video player but it doesn't have that button to change the aspect ratio. It has a button that looks like it but it is the stop button.

using vlc streaming to get movies from my phone, working really well. just fire up vlc on your pc and change a couple settings.
my only issue is the videos are squeezed and aspect ratio is stretched vertical. the aspect ratio no matter what the input video always outputs a stream that is tall and skinny. i have tried changing the aspect on every vlc setting on phone with no luck. also tried using mp4 for the codec instead of h264, still the same issues with incorrect aspect ratio. looks like a 16:9 got smushed into a 4x3 or worse.
Apart from that, the player works very well no dropped frames, any format that your pc vlc can play works in the phone now since the pc converts on the fly. my quad core i7 760 uses about 15% processor to stream live.

I'm looking for an app that can playback the videos I used to convert to use in windows mobile coreplayer. I'm running an htc hd2 which has a display resolution of 800x480 and an aspect ratio of 5:3. I convert all my movies to pan and scan to 5:3 aspect ratio. What that does is, It allows the video to automatically fill the entire screen at 1:1 pixel perfect quality depending on the source resolution. So i tried the same method with Android 2.3.3 with my htc hd2 using VitalPlayer, which I feel is the best video I've been able to find. I hate having an audio app "PowerAMP" and a seperate extremely limited Video Player. So my problem is when i playback a 5:3 aspect ratio pan and scan 800x480 video on any player in android, it displays everything stretched vertically but it fills the screen. Coreplayer displayed it flawlessly as I had intended. I use Xilisoft Video Converter HD. I use .mp4 avc format with cuda support. This method worked great on Coreplayer. What should I do? Actually I remember I had to set the aspect ratio on coreplayer to Square to display it correctly. Thanks.
Question - What is a good video player that can playback all the formats vitalplayer or even coreplayer does preferably and have some options to change/ adjust the aspect ratio and zoom and more?
Actually I re did it at 5:3 and now it displays perfectly. lol. my bad. I had my aspect ratios messed up, now wonder. User error all along.

I've owned the phone for about a week now and I like it a lot except I'm not sure how to get videos converted on here? I had to find a trial version of AVS video converter which doesn't even support Galaxy S2, I just changed the resolution but it wasn't as good + watermark in the center.
How can I get movies on here and utilize the full screen or at least get good quality? Does Samsung Kies do this?
I know with apple products (i.e. the iPhones, iPods) it easy with itunes and I already have Videora ipod converter which is extremely easy and flawless for my iPod.
I just cant find anything that easy with the Galaxy s2? Honestly it feels like this is the deal breaker for me as much as I love this phone.
You don't have to convert anything. The phone plays divx and mkvs. Converting is in the past. At worst you need to get Dice Player from the market for mkvs with DTS. I have a huge collection and converting is history.
If you want to convert it for downsizing the file size try Handbrake. Free program and open source.

Handbrake is the way to go. Free, open source, and uses one of the best H.264 encoders out there (x264).
I have attached the preset I use for encoding - note that this can probably use some tuning to be more appropriate for the GS2 as it's more capable than the Android devices I've encoded to before for media playback. It'll work just fine on the GS2, it just won't achieve quite the quality and compression ratios possible by enabling some of the more advanced H.264 features.
I disagree on conversion being unnecessary - 720p/1080p videos are pointless unless you're using the MHL adapter, they'll play but are a waste of storage space. Also, some codecs/formats may fallback on software decoding, eating your battery more than hardware-decoded formats.

DivX or XviD are just codecs for .avi files right? Most of my movies are all avi's and I just drag and dropped one and it played great just now.
Do you all your movies play with black borders too? I know I could resize it on my Galaxy S2 but there is some loss in quality. This seems like a universal thing as my iPod Touch does the same thing. It's not a problem really it's just I'd like to be able to utilize the full screen.

Yes, it does for movies but not TV thanks to the aspect ratio. Some player from the market (Moboplayer, Dice Player) let you resize to fill the screen.

Handbrake can re-encode almost any video source. You can watch 1080p movies on the phone but they only display in WVGA resolution. With MHL out the phone will playback full Blu Ray rips in 1080p (I do this often).
Depends on the movie. If it's a 16:9 movie, it should have little to no black bordering.
If it's a 2.35:1 movie - it's going to have black bars above/below.
4:3 content will have black bars left/right.
While you can directly watch 1080p content (we've got a beefy GPU), it gets scaled down to 480p - so it'll just waste storage space.
The preset I linked preserves the aspect ratio and limits to a max of 800 pixels wide or 480 tall, so basically scaling video to the optimal resolution for our phone - not too small, not any larger than the native resolution.
If you want to use the MHL adapter, I can post the 720p preset I use on my Tab 10.1

Thanks a lot for attaching your preset. It works great. You mentioned that it can use some tuning for our phone to achieve the quality and compression ratios possible. I don't know how to do that so I don't know if it's quick and simple to do or not. Can you do that and attach it for us to download?

Basically go into Advanced and try enabling various features until something breaks.
I tried it on my Infuse at one point and it just caused audio and video to desync. Haven't had time to fiddle with it on the GS2. It's basically trial and error in the Advanced tab of Handbrake.

It's basically the exact same preset except the resolution limits are 1280x720. The resolution limits are hard to find, you only see them when saving a profile.
I'm new to android and android hardware. My question is that when I play YouTube app I never get hd quality (not crystal clear) videos. The screen is kinda of snowy. I did a test on multiple videos 360p, 720p, 1080p all the same. Also when I tested a mkv file on the system sd it plays back kind of skippy and not crystal clear 1080p. Is my note defective ? Or what ? It's stock rom I don't know how to root. Thank you
Take it back and get a new one, you're well in the 30 day return window.
also do a speed test to see what your net speed is because it will scale your video back if your streaming over 3g at low speeds. 1080 requires atleast 6mbps connection. otherwise it will lower it for you.
I did a speed test and I'm getting 35down 8up wifi. also Netflix doing the same. Everything else works but I'm just not getting hd quality video
Have you tried to have the screen on the upper right corner and tap on the hd button?

On my device hd youtube videos look pretty good, its flash movie videos on certain websites that look a little weird...like panning flashes slightly happening on blacks, not so much macroblocking.
The Note display isn't 1080p, it's actually WXGA, just a little taller than 720p.
Also there is the well-known issue of dark scenes being blotchy with videos. This has been documented in the Int'l version too.
And +1 to the suggestion to press the "HQ" button. Also be sure the video is offered in HD. Try this video and don't forget the HQ button which you can only see if you tap the screen.

also make sure u turn up the brightness. if you have it set low that will cause some of this
Does Netflix show hd content on the android?
That video is super choppy and pixelated for me over wifi.

What you described happens in YouTube and Netflix. The hq is on as always
I never saw any kind of problems streaming with the Galaxy s, Galaxy S2 and with my recent one the Galaxy Note. It looks even better on the note crystal clear (Youtube, Vevo and Netflix), try to compare it with another Note to see if your device is defective. And regarding the .mkv playback, it was a little choppy on all devices so i think is more hardware performances don't forget those still smartphones not computers.
I've also noticed that the "HD" option isn't so HD. Even at home over wifi with 20/20Mbit, it's still quite blocky. I'm convinced that the youtube app is the problem and does not actually pull the 720p or 1080p versions even if they are available and you select "HD" with a connection that can support it. I don't know what resolution it does pull -- some kind of hybrid maybe, where it's 720p but at a much lower bitrate? It looks 'decent'/better than without "HD", but movement scenes are horribly blocky compared to what they could be.
I've verified that it's the youtube app itself (and the mobile version of their website too btw) by opening the stock browser, navigating to www.youtube.com, scrolling down and opening the Desktop version of the site, searching/selecting the same video, hitting the cog when it starts playing to change resolution to 720p/1080p (just as you would on a desktop), and then going full screen. It plays fine, and the video quality is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the youtube app (and mobile site as well I believe) when doing this. Much less blockiness, especially on scenes with a lot of motion or blacks. It's really annoying, because it is inconvenient to open videos in the browser this way, yet the quality is worth it. I wish there was an app available that allowed for better quality. I want to choose the "desktop version" of 720p without going to the desktop website.

Try Tubemate in the Amazon App Store. Let's you download or watch the video. Plus you can select which version to watch/download.

I did a test with alot of videos and Some mkv files. It seams to me also that the apps for galaxy note are not streaming in hd.the mkv files on my sd card play stunning hd video. Netflix is the same way and many others like vevo etc... I get to say the least vhs quality video streaming on 4g lte or 50/8 speed 5ghz N Wifi. Why is this happening? does it occur in the international version? Also in some YouTube playbacks with a dark scene I see lines going across the screen? Does it happen to any of you guys also?
I hooked up my TP to my old CRT TV (please don't laugh at me) through a small digital to analog converter. Audio and video come through fine, except the video is "squished" thinner than it should be. The converter and TV don't seem to have options for changing the aspect ratio, so the responsibility falls on my TP. Problem is, I can't find info about changing aspect ratios anywhere. Any ideas? Thanks!

Get Dice player, it has options for size, rotation and so on, but that is for local videos and I am not sure it will do anything for web video.

Come to think of it, I mostly run the Netflix app, so yeah, I would need to somehow change the aspect ratio for the HDMI video output (or on the Netflix app, which doesn't seem to have that option).
Anyone else have ideas?
