[Q] trouble flashing a custom Rom... - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so here goes...
After spending two days of installing Ubuntu on my pc, and getting dsixda's HTC Rom kitchen working on it, I'm having some troubles.
Now, I've searched this problem, and the ONLY two answers I've found don't work for me. My problem is that when I try to flash the Rom, I get E:"nameofthefile".zip can't open (bad)
At first I thought it may be my recovery. I (stupidly) used clockwork on my Eris for quite a while, but heard to stop using it. So I used the guide in the Eris dev section to safely flash from clockwork to amon ra... worked like a charm... but still the same error message.
I tried the Rom on my bros freshly rooted Eris (thanks jCases for the one click root app!) That's never had clockwork, only amon... still no go.
Then, I saw that it might be the fact that my SD card was partitioned, but it can't be that, cause my bros phone never had apps2sd or partitions and it didn't work.
So now, I'm out of ideas.. I've tried flashing this custom Rom on two completely different Eris, with the same error message. It's Conaps Eris Lightning 3.02. I got the kitchen cause I wanted to deodex the Rom. I've been talking to dsixda, and he suggested that I post here on the Eris forum. I've ran out of solutions, could ANYONE out there help? Any Eris users that have had this problem and know a fix? This post is my last hope
Also- since amon didn't work, I decided to try clockwork to flash. Same error message BUT Rom manager gave me an error log. Could anyone look over this and spot the issue/issues?
Sent from my Eris

I recconend you use cygwin on Windows. Works like a charm for me. On ubuntu the only thing I can tell you is to reinstall the kitchen and put the files back in the correct folder.

Did you sign the ROM after using the kitchen?
Because it sounds like it's unsigned.
There must be a linux version of this (I'm using windows and mac os x together)
http://androidforums.com/developer-101/8665-how-signing-roms.html

Well upon export of the rom, it says that it signs it, and the final .Zip is named "signed xxxxx.Zip. I do have windows tho so I'll give that a shot too. Thank you for the help

help asap!!

Okay so I have a fascinate. This past weekend I was able to root my phone, install numerous different roms, and try different kernels. I decided I wanted to go back to stock, and start over with a clean rom and no lag fix. I did the 3 ODIN file's and when I got my phone up and running it says I have 0.0mb free space on my phone, so I cannot install anything. I also tried using the Stock Nandroid Image and cleared the data and cache and everything. To no avail I cannot free up any space. Please help!! I dont know what to do. My phone has 0.0mb free space on the built in card and I cant do anything now. Someone please help!!!
There are at least 4 other threads with this same issue and a thread with a fix. Please look around a little before posting. I am on my phone or I would post a link.

Here's the link to one of those threads. As stated above it always helps to search first this thread was on the third page so not too hard to find. I don't mean to sound like an ass but the mods are stretched slim so we have a lot of nonsense threads asking the same question.
Here's the link and best of luck! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804457&highlight=fixed
Thanks DD, was trying to find and post link from my phone and it's not so easy.

ty guys. i found that right after i posted. i just wish i knew which one fixed it. ill try from the beginning lol
yeah, when it happened to me I ran through the whole thing. it happens when you don't remove voodoo properly. the /data partition is still in ext4 format and a nonvoodoo kernel can't read ext4. if that makes any sense...
it does somewhat. Doesnt help that im over tired. And i dont know what have the crap means on this remove voodoo thread either lol
Your welcome Skywalker and jr I'm not much of help ever but I do what I can when needed any luck as of yet jr?
about to do the uninstaller for the voodoo. I have no idea how to do the manual mode, so i hope this uninstaller works !!
fml said some error for update.zip. Gunna copy it back over. Might give it a break for a bit, im so tired lol
i think my phone is shot. I put update.zip on my sdcard and its giving me an error when i try to run it through clockwork

i need help, i have no idea what those commands mean
woohoo i got it!!

[Q] How do you flash roms on prerooted GB?

Feel free to move or delete this thread, or even create a better one because I can not seem to find what I am looking for.
I have an X2 that I went through the whole bootstrap, gingerbreak, upgrade to pre-root GB.
Now I have all that, Rom manager, CMR, Bootstrap installed, all those fancy programs, but when I try to use Clockwork Mod it just brings me back through the regular bootloop back to GB without even doing any update/flash whatever you might call it.
What am I missing here? Where is this magical step I am obviously overlooking? Sorry, yes I am a newb and now I want to try either eclipse(which is on my SD Card) or the CM7 nightlies...

Still the same result, I am trying to install a nightly right out of Rom Manager. It just reboots the phone, nothing else, not even an option to do anything else.
I still gave you a thanks for trying.
Rom Manager Doesn't Work, Koush Isn't Supporting The X2 Yet. The Clockworkmod We're Using Is Tenfars Based On Koush's Code.
Where can I find that?
It's The Bootstrap. Open It Up And Read The Text At The Bottom. You're Welcome.

Ok, so I already had that on my phone, I thought it was used in conjunction with Rom Manager! My bad guys! So, I just install a .zip version of whatever rom I downloaded to my SD card through Recover?

should've made him work out a fractal before giving up the info...
Yes I also didn't think u t would just be as easy as how I got preroot gb when I first did it either
As easy as flashing the preroot. Do the same thing with eclipse and viola.
lol, I love fractals!
No, but on a serious note, I already had everything but had CMR because I used to have a DX. I thought I read somewhere people saying "clockword mod this..." and assumed it would be the same one!
This forum is freaking huge and can take someone hours to find a simple "how-to" lol.
there is no cm7 nightlies for this bad boy so dont flash any of them lol
I noticed, I have been trying to install the eclipse rom to no avail still. Followed all the prompts but keep getting the same error.
What error are u getting?
I will have to post it later when I get a minute to run through the steps again. I believe it was "E: Can't open.... Install aborted" something along those lines. Eclipse on SD card(if that makes a difference), just want to put as much info out as you guys might need to find my issue.

And u are using the option" install zip from sd card" where you have to go and physically choose the eclipse zip? You didn't unzip did you? Try deleting eclipse zip and redownload? And are you plugged in to your ac charger in a wall outlet? Can you list the exact steps you are doing? And it is on extern sd card correct?

The sticky in the android dev subforum has links to all the tutorials. Regarding the error, are you downloading eclipse with your phone or a computer. If using your phone try using your pc with Firefox or chrome browser. If that isn't feasible, I downloaded mine from phone but I had astro file manager installed so the stock browser would download it. You can try that. Most errors of that nature are related to a bad download. The links are all verified, next logical step is to try a different download method

So just to be clear. Now if I screw (soft brick?) my phone I can just use the 2.3.3 sbf and root that correct. Yay no more going all the way back. I can just root GB and restore my nandroid I made with eclipse Rom running.

Correctimundo.
I have had troubles running the script provided even the v7 that is posted now i have re-written the instructions and will compile an app later that can be run on windows to make sure the paths are all ok. Creating the local.prop file and not getting into the shell first was acting up on my XP box. I have a party to head out to but once I get back I will get the app written and tested again. Also I cannot take screens with drocap on the X2, I think it's a Tegra issue can anyone confirm or know of a screen shot app that works on Tegras
Just used AndroSS but it works without root on the X2 but at least i can get some screens of the terminal and a few other places now.
I'm Not Sure I'm Following, There's A Script With The 1 Click Program?
Yes there is a .bat file but running that did not work so I compared the steps and was looking over the command set and it was not properly sending the shell commands on my workstation. It may have been an issue with custom paths I run at the office. Could have been a windows version issue as well. If its written in vb.net I can call a vbscript to use send keys which will prevent that.

[HELP] i can't root!!!! help!

See the pics attached:
I use this method
(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145):
"
E. Rooting for 2.3.3/2.3.4/2.3.5 (Thanks to russian forum-user with nickname may213):
1) Download attached file called upd_1.zip and copy it to your sdcard
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Select update from sdcard, select the file upd_1.zip
5) After the update completed - reboot
6) Now you have rooted S5830
"
before rooting, I've done this———“How to force install apps to SD card without ROOT!!!”, does this affect my rooting?
Try to mount/system and data then flash again.
tried, still can't. thx anyway.
Problem solved!!
I find this article "How to root Samsung Galaxy Ace on Froyo & Gingerbread
"acetips.wordpress.com/2011/09/29/root-ace-froyo-gingerbread/"
I follow the note:
"Those who are getting errors and cant root their phone , Download this file “AceGingerRoot.zip” and use it instead of “upd_1.zip”"
download the file “AceGingerRoot.zip".
and successfull!!!!
I don't know why, but again, it's successful!
I'm sorry, I thought my problem solved.
coz I saw the update completed and the superuser icon in the app drawer.
But when I try to open Titanium Backup, it says my ROM is not rooted.
Still need help!
and my phone is locked to my carrier,
does it affect the rooting?
really need help!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so frustrated!!!
Lol. I had the exact same problem! Are you intending to install cm7? Whatever I did that update pack would not root for me... I ended up flashing clockwork mod ace, a recovery just for the ace. I've heard that the regular ROM Manager can brick this phone. Then installed cm7 without having the root permission in Gingerbread. You can do it just by placing the Rom on the SD and using the install zip from sd option. You will want to make a backup before you do this. Also check if you can find your providers APN values online for setting up mobile data. Worked for me. Do I like cm7? It is good, very customizable. However, do not expect something as polished as the firmware without a bit of effort to figure out the options.

And no, being locked to a carrier does not affect rooting your phone.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
you can try CF-root
You should also have a look at the topic on this forum "(Q) GTS5830B root?" I think it may be applicable to you. Some stuff about changing the script in the update.zip pack to match the model of your Ace.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
yes, I got the problem exactly same as this thread""(Q) GTS5830B root?" " but I don't understand how to solve it using the method mentioned in that thread.
Actually, I'm not only just a noob, also, ace is my first smartphone.
I tried to figure out all the new words, apps, systems I had to use to get my Ace to customize as my wish.
I'll managed to solve my problem by figuring out the approach that thread mentioned. If I can't, I'll probably try CM7(another new thing to learn).
Thank you for your hint, at least now, I saw the hope out there.
I've tried these 2:
1. edit "updater-script" by changing "GT-S5830" to "GT-S5830T"(my model number), it doesn't work, aborted.
2. delete the "assert", it worked, update completed.
But,
Still,
when I try to open titanium or root uninstaller,
they all say "it is not rooted" after updating was successful.
I just don't get it. WHY?????
I tried to unroot, coz I thought maybe I can get rid of the useless superuser app got from updating "“AceGingerRoot.zip” ", and then I will give modified "update.zip" another try.
However, it's so funny that the superuser app is still there after updating unroot.zip successfully(at least that's what the screen says).
Can I recovery to the stock state by using the recovery mode? so I can get rid of all these stuff and start again!
Okay, you have EXACTLY the same problem I did. You could try SuperOnceClick. It never worked for me, but it might be worth a try before giving up. There is a good Tutorial on it here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
When that didn't work I just installed CyanogenMod-7.1-RC1Cooper-Grif_07 and moved on with my life. You can get it to look just like Gingerbread, but you will loose all your Samsung stuff, and your GPS might not be able to get a fix. Sorry...

Yes, if you made a back-up before you started. It is really easy, it just takes a few min... Without a backup you would need to download the original firmware.

and I thought SuperOnceClick is for Froyo and not for ACE?
When I installed I was so MAD that I was ready to smash the phone, so honestly I never backed up before installing CM7. You can go ahead and try. The worst that can happen is nothing. If you're flashing CM7 and you absolutely hate it you can always reset back to the factory ROM by downloading and installing it. You're better off waiting. They discovered a bug that causes the device to be bricked if you format the SD card. There's a fix for said brick, but it's still something that shouldn't be out in the wild.

So far yes but truth is that eather with warnings or not people(noobs) could still do it lol so... to put an example i have read of 2 guys who wiped all the partitions off course they bricked their device (Judge for yourself).
So let devs work, test more and fix bugs, anyway there are some other bugs too and it other features aren't supported yet like Bluetooth, microphone, etc. I personally stay away of alphas but this time i tested support of apps and few other things but nothing major because i know there can be risks.

The bug is on both versions, and occurs if you try to format/erase the SD Card through the CM7 storage menu. So theoretically as long as you don't do that, you're fine, but I understand the hesitance to share a file that could potentially brick someone's device.
I was using the internal version, and experienced the SD format brick.
After recovering, I've continued to use CM7, primarily because when I tried to go back to the 1.4.1 + root image that's floating around here, I couldn't install market apps anymore. Tablet would reboot every single time I've tried. So I went back to CM7, just reminding myself to never, ever, ever erase the SDcard through the mod.
If you are not careful
I have been very cautious and lucky so far. I Rooted my Nook Tab back in late November by following ADB instructions and then applied many different tweaks including build.prop etc. All directions in these forums must be followed explicitly and you MUST have some working knowledge of ADB and a general understanding of how computers work. I have read every post in this forum and spent many hours researching how the devs were trying to circumvent the bootloader using various exploits. I did try to inject the Chainfire 3D wrapper as to be able to play Tegra Games and got caught in a boot loop and had to factory restore. Over all, I have been very careful. I have read in the forum that others have tried to apply CM7 update by trying to flash the cm7.ZIP file. It is very lucky for these people that in Clock Work Mod (CMW) this mode does not format the internal memory, it just writes to the System/app folder or to the folder that is specified inside the zip file. It is easy to get excited around buzz words like CM7 and CM9. But it is important to net let it go to your head and research thouroughly before hack-a-lackin your tablet. I am very grateful that the Devs rethought the CWM flasher and added the hash checksum so that someone with a bad connection didn't flash a partially downloaded file. I have CM7 on my Nook. Luckily, I didnt try to format an SD card with the Nook, I used an external card reader. The most important thing is, the Devs and the End Users are all going down unfamiliar territory. Research is the WORD. Happy Hacking!!!
