Since there is no led that can be set to flash to garner attention for any reason - new email, etc., is there an application that can be set to light up one of the ' hard' buttons given certain criteria?
If not, does anyone feel like writing one?

Awesome idea. I would give a dev several beers for such an app.
light up buttons
home button light up = missed call/or phone call when screen is sleep, menu button = missed text, back button = missed email! would be very nice and also include options for different flashing patterns!
now where is 2.2 so hopefully we can disable this haptic feedback annoyance?
There already is one....im using it. Called StreakLED. You can find it in Marketplace and in here. Search in XDA development section.
It does not work with missed email, and if i use widgetlocker
I've made an app called StreakLED (its in the development forum) but it only works for SMS messages atm. I will add missed call and email notifications soon but I've broke my USB cable so I can't do much untill I get a new one!

OK this might be a stupid question but is it possible to set the phone to vibrate when you receive a SMS or an email (I don't really mind about the email but SMS would be really useful)?
This is my first android (well, after messing around with it on the X1) and I'm unsure if the phone has this feature or not. I've checked the app marketplace and couldn't find anything.
Many thanks!
EDIT: Sorry I found the option for vibrate on email.
EDIT 2: And I just found it for SMS, could and admin lock please, sorry for the stupid post.
can u share how u did it?

Go to Messaging, press the Menu button (left button on the X10), and you'll see Settings, click that. Vibrate is on the bottom. I'm sure it's the same for email.

That's where I found it (for both SMS & email).
I just got the Mytouch 4g and ChompSMS is very important to my existence since I came from an iPhone with BiteSMS. The quick compose feature was amazing on the iphone, hit the volume key then tap the center of screen and begin composing a message.
ChompSMS has a similar feature in which you can long press Camera or long press Search Button (Doesnt exist on MT4G due to genius button) and that will allow you to quick compose. I have tried both and neither works for some reason, does any one know how to disable or make those buttons work as stock android buttons so ChompSMS can succesfully quick compose?
Thanks
heres a review of chompsms for those who are unfamiliar with it..

Does the one you use have quick compose working on the mytouch 4G ?

me too, after years of chompsms, they're both great but handcent seems to have more options, less ad permeated thru the app.

If you follow the instructions in the post below, it will have the added benefit of allowing you to use the genius button for quick compose. Also, make sure it's turned on in the settings in Chomp.

I have not unfortunately, I hear the only solution is to do the root and map the genius button. I am with you that quick compose was at the core of my being, but have had to live without it and it just flat out sucks. When I get a chance I will root it and remap the button though,.

I'm seeing lots of people (like myself) who are migrating from iPhone's to Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGS3) and Android platform. I first asked this question in THIS THREAD and got some great advice, so I thought I'd ask the question a little better in hopes we can make this a thread that will ease the transition for those of us moving from iOS to Android. Please keep all the fan boy comments out of the thread, let's keep the thread on topic :highfive:
I'm a phone junkie, like many of us here... And I've been using iOS almost exclusively since June 2007 and version 1.02 I think it was back then on the first iPhone... I've owned all of the iPhone series, and simply wanted something DIFFERENT (ironic isn't it). I'm a Windows guy, NOT a Mac guy - and don't consider myself a fan boy... One of the things I loved about iOS was just about all the apps being created were created for iOS first (or exclusively in some cases)... Which is another reason I like Windows over Mac... SOFTWARE. Simply put there is ton's of stuff for windows, and not so much for mac. OK MOVING ON.
Because I'm on T-mobile, all of my iPhone's have been unlocked and jailbroken.. so getting my SGS3 is one of the first times I'm actually experiencing HIGH SPEED MOBILE INTERNET... :good: That alone is pretty cool. As you may or may not know, when an iPhone is jailbroken it gives access to 3rd party apps and tweaks. Some of which I miss... And thanks to some great members here, I have found Android equivalents.
The goal of this thread would be for users like me who are moving from iPhone to Android/SGS3 and miss certain apps, features or tweaks - maybe those of you who are Android veterans can help guide us in the right direction.
iPhone: LOCK INFO
Show's all kinds of information on your lock screen like sms, email, calendar events, time, alarms, reminders, shortcuts, etc.
ANDROID: EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT
(Thanks to Rickinsav)
iPhone: Ringer X Pro
Allows you to set independant sounds for a single contacts sms, mms, email, call, etc... also lets you set IGNORE MUTE so even if iPhone is on mute, and something comes in from that contact - your phone makes noise.
Android: WhoIsIt
(Thanks Zelendel)
iPhone: Unlim Tones
Download any type of ringer or tone..
Android: ZEDGE app
1.MyWi- just a well designed tether app
2.intelliscreenx- great info in all the right places.
3.Sena Walletslim leather case- a perfect mix of case and wallet. Well built and functional
MyWi = FoxFi on Android, great hotspot app
I've heard foxfi let's you tether over wifi even if not rooted. I have not tried it yet. (that covers mywi)
Intelliscreen x: I stopped using this after I found lock info because Intelliscreen was a cpu hog and slowed down my phone. But I'd think executive assistant should be a comparable replacement?
Case I can't help with- sorry
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 Tapatalk 2
The non rooted Foxfi does work, I've used it on my SGS3 on VZW, as far as the wallet case...there are quite a few out there that are similar. Boxwave has one and there are plenty posted in the accessories thread
Also on the LockInfo you can use WidgetLocker and just add whatever widgets you want on the lock screen so it can be customized by widget instead of a whole stand alone app
**Edit also the custom ringtones...you can do that with the stock software that's on the SGS3 when you go to a contact**
Oh yeah. Widget locker is awesome. I used it on another android phone I played with. I wonder if face lock still works while using widget locker?

Well only for calls. I have not found a stock way to change sms tone for a contact, and email tone for a contact, and etc.
I wanted to have a dedicated sms sound for my wife (as an example)

Oh gotcha..wasn't thinking the text and email...
Here's one I miss and I'd love to find an alternative
iPhone: ACTION MENU
When you long hold on text, and the context or action menu pops up (cut, copy, paste) ACTION MENU add's things like SHORTEN URL, TWEET, LOOKUP, COPY ALL (like select all, then copy), etc... Very customizable and a serious time saver when you get used to it. I have not found anything like this for Android yet, the closest I came was Shortify which is an app that will shorten a url using goo.gl url shortener, but you have do it manually each time (ie: copy text, exit browser, launch app, click shorten from clip board, re-launch whatever, click paste)
iPhone: BiteSMS quick compose text message.
I know the android alternative or equivalent is ChompSMS, and I am currently using Go SMS because of the way it handles MMS's in the default picture viewing mode not in slideshow mode (stupid samsung messaging app) - anyway, on the iPhone you set QuickCompose to use Volume keys (as an example) and when you see the volume bar, you can click on the graphic and a BiteSMS quick compose SMS box appears so you can send a text without having to load the sms app itself. That was nice.
iPhone: Activator
Activator let you set ANY key or set of actions to do something... example: double tap power key to turn on LED for flashlight.. or quickly tap volume up then down (ie: slide finger down over volume buttons) to turn on LED for flashlight.. It was completely configurable to load apps, do all kinds of things... that was a good one.

activator equivalent is Tasker
So I was able to do it in the stock ICS build, but for some reason can't get it to work on JB. Specially the vibration that occurs when a notification happens. I friggin hate it.
Anyone know how to disable it? I've scoured every menu item.

The vibrate option is usually app specific. Open the app with the notifications you want to stop vibrating, hit menu, and look in those settings.

2 weeks in with the HTC One and love it still... I have always rooted and gone with custom rom (thanks to XDA-Dev!) within hours of getting a new device from AT&T (sticking with them cause I have an old grandfathered-in unlimited data plan) but didnt with the HTC One because I just seemed perfect for how I use my phone.
Now that I'm back in the saddle at work and deep in writing some heavy code I notice one thing that may be the single reason I need to root / mod (unless Im missing something): When I get an SMS I get the audible notification sound I have selected and the small LED light indicator, but unlike my last android device, the screen doesnt wake and show me the lock screen where I have it setup to show the first few lines of new emails and SMS messages... so I have to stop typing each time and manually press the power button each time...
is there a way to enable this or is LED / sound notification basically all the stock AT&T HTC One is capable of?
Anyone else dealt with the same issue and found a workaround?
Don't quote me but I used handcent to get around this same issue. Handcent works really well but I wish they would have allowed this on the original messaging app. There are quite a few dumb decisions that were made on the One

You can do it, but you're gonna have to decompile and edit some things.

Yes there are many options for screen-on SMS notification. ROMs such as Viper One (via the built in Venom Tweaks) and TrickDroid (via an Aroma option during installation) support screen-on SMS notification with the default messaging app. Several 3rd party SMS apps have this feature as mentioned previously.
Also look into Glowfly in the Play Store. Nice mms wake solution.
metro notifications........is the best!!!!!
Activenotifications is also a great option. Mimics the moto x wake display feature

I use Notifier Pro. It gives me a banner across the top of my screen like the iPhone does and it gives you the option to wake up the device
