The title is the question. Please forgive me, if my searching overlooked the answer.
Just to be clear, my aim is to get "phone" contacts up to google.
I've deleted and removed the "phone" and "sim" contacts. I thought the "phone" contacts were just the stock numbers to check balances and stuff?
Why not just open your gmail and add them manually on your PC so they sync with google.... then go to display options and only show "google"
Thanks, but I'm looking for a non-manual solution.
Manually, I imagine, on the phone I could link all instances of a contact; edit or create a google contact containing the contact details; unlink the google contact; and delete what's left.
With more than a few contacts, that's more work than I'd prefer.
If you want to copy contacts that are saved to the "phone" and get them into your gmail contacts list you can....
open contacts..
press menu..
choose more..
select import/export..
export to sd card...
send that file to your computer or gmail.
in gmail click on contacts..
more actions..
import...
choose file.... the .vcf you created earlier
and gmail will bring them in and if you have sync enabled on your phone everything will be exactly the same on phone and in gmail and the phone..
probably an easier way to do this but this is what i found since i had 80+ numbers from my old blackberry sim

The majority of my contacts are phone contacts, is there anyway I can convert them to Google contacts so they sync with Google?
I had this dilemma yesterday. I'm hope you have Outlook. what you can do is sync you contacts with the HTC sync with outlook. then save your contacts by exporting them to CSV file. You can then import this phone to your web gmail account. Delete all your phone contacts and then sync your Google contacts by going to settings > data sync > Google > menu > sync now. I hope this helps
Damn, I don't have Outlook, there must be another way surely...
The only other way is to save to SIM and then import it from the SIM card. Only thing bad about that is that any facebook link will be lost mate.
Use ExportContacts, edit (if needed) the *.csv file to fit Google's importing rules (check this topic for reference), import the file to Google Contacts via PC and synchronize.
Or search for ContactSync in the market that will convert your phone contacts to Google ones. but try this if the above method does not work.

I would trully NOT recommend that. I've tried it and as it may have seen, all the contacts have been converted do "Google" type, but non of them actually synced with Google Contacts. At least that's what happened on my Hero.

I got the same results. They tried to sync, but I got a force close-msg. Had to delete all the changed contacts for it to work again
Question: How do you actually know which contacts are Google ones and which are not. In my virtually all my contacts are Google ones but there are the odd ones that are phone contacts and I'm trying to find them so I can convert them.
when you look in people they say what they are to the right of the name......
use 'Export Contacts" (contacts, contacts tab, menu, more, import/export) to send the file to your sd card as a vcf file. then go back to the same place and import them into a google account instead of phone.
What i did is, i exported my contacts on Outlook, and then went my google page > contacts > Import contacts.
I imported the file, and deleted all my contacts on phone.
Now im syncing my google contacts to phone
Hi,
I'm trying to convert some of my Google Contacts in Phone Contacts because of bugs like these that take ages to be fixed: 5046 3879 4147 3870
Anyway, I've tried so many apps and methods but I can't manage to do what I want. I can't find a way to have some of my Google Contacts be converted/copied/whatever to the "Phone Contacts" instead.
Does anyone have any ideas that might help me solve this situation? I didn't want to input all the needed contacts by hand as "Phone Contacts", that would be such a pain in the ass to do manually...
Any ideas people?
two methods.
Log into gmail on your pc
export the contacts to CSV file.
Import that CSV into Outlook
Sync outlook to your phone using HTC Sync
delete all contacts from google
second method:
Open people
select a contact
press menu
select more
select save to sim
repeat for all contacts
then, wehn all contact are on SIM, menu, Import
select Phone instead of google
delete all contacts from google.
There may be a third party app from the market that would do it, but i've never bothered trying as the photo thing does not bother me. if it's a little pixelated, i don't care, just as long as i know who it is.
Second method looked nice until I tried and realized that long names are truncated. It also doesn't save e-mails and birthdays. These make this option not feasible.
As for the first method, are you sure that syncying contacts with outlook using HTC Sync will sync them to the "Phone" and not "Google"? I don't want to have all the work of installing Outlook if it doesn't work... Just to make sure before I start.
yes, anything synched using HTC Sync goes into the Phone group.
As the Google apps are not open source, HTC Sync cannot inject contacts into the Google group and so instead puts them all in the phone group.
Thanks, I'll try that then
so has anyone noticed that any new numbers entered in the tb is not syncing to you google contact list? i have all settings correct in the syncing settings.. set to google to synch contacts but yet theres no upward syncing going on at all. this worries me because i change androids so often i dont want to loose all my contacts here on on...
has anyone figured out this and how to fix the sync? i hope this is not a sense thing...
any info would be appreciated .. thanks
When I get new contacts I usually export my contacts on to my SD card and when I flash a new ROM i, import from my SD card. Ive noticed my new contacts dont upload to gmail as well.
When you input a contact into the phone, you have to select it as a "Gmail" contact instead of a "Phone" contact. Very easy to miss this option when you are putting a contact in. Once you have the contact in, I don't know of a way to change them to Gmail contacts other than doing some weird import/export thing.
Actually the phone doesnt allow you to pick where to save to.... still so way to get it to sync..
I have all of my contacts stored in gmail contacts online.
In the course of trying to tidy up contacts on my phone, deleting duplicate/unnecessary info and 'joining' multiple accounts (mostly gmail, facebook and whatsapp) I had a bit of a Homer Simpson moment managed to delete all of my contacts (D'Oh!!).
Fortunately, as I said above I have them in gmail contacts online and had also exported them to my SD card as a vcard and so have managed to get them back (albeit having to tidy them up again).
Here's the thing though, when I go to the Contacts menu item 'Contacts to display' the contacts show when All Contacts or Gmail account are selected, but when I select Phone contacts in 'Contacts to display' the list is empty.
How do I move/copy my gmail contacts so that they are held in the actual phone memory and displayed if I opt to display Phone contacts only (i.e. no longer link to my gmail contacts)?
Cheers in advance,
Rich
I think what you need to is to sync your contact again. Contact to display is only show if your phone have a contact that is available in your gmail contact only.
copy contacts to phone only

I think you've misunderstood my original question. I have got the contacts visible when I view all contacts or view gmail contacts, but there is an option in the contacts menu to view contacts on phone only (i.e. not those stored in gmail contacts). When I use that option I don't see any of my contacts. Therefore, what I need to be able to do is copy the contacts across from gmail contacts so they are visible in the phone contacts only view, but I can't figure out how to copy them across to the phone.
Never had to do it on either my s2 or s3 before. I did do it on my old HTC via a menu option along the lines of 'Copy contacts to phone' but there isn't a menu option like that on the s3 unless I'm missing something obvious.
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers.
I need to switch all my contacts from Mobile Life to Google. I read the other threads involving this, but the solutions involved syncing the phone w/ Windows and I have a Mac. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
-Adam
Try some app.(google it).
I know it on win , but on mac........?
I downloaded an app that exports contacts to a .csv file, which I can sync to google contacts online. When I do this, will they automatically sync to my phone? I want to figure this out before doing anything.. if they do sync to my phone, I want to delete the contacts on there now so I don't end up with duplicates.
Why not just delete the duplicates from you csv file before you upload it to google?

I did! All the contacts on my phone are Mobile Life. If Google automatically imports the contacts I sync to the website, there'll be doubles of everything.. 1 Mobile Life and 1 Google.
Has anyone used the ContactExport app? I finally imported the .csv file it created to google and it didn't include any of the phone #'s or other info for any of the contacts!
If you choose "Copy Contact" for any contact you can make it a Google Contact. This will sync up to your Google account, and doesn't create duplicates.
