[Q] Managing contacts - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have all of my contacts stored in gmail contacts online.
In the course of trying to tidy up contacts on my phone, deleting duplicate/unnecessary info and 'joining' multiple accounts (mostly gmail, facebook and whatsapp) I had a bit of a Homer Simpson moment managed to delete all of my contacts (D'Oh!!).
Fortunately, as I said above I have them in gmail contacts online and had also exported them to my SD card as a vcard and so have managed to get them back (albeit having to tidy them up again).
Here's the thing though, when I go to the Contacts menu item 'Contacts to display' the contacts show when All Contacts or Gmail account are selected, but when I select Phone contacts in 'Contacts to display' the list is empty.
How do I move/copy my gmail contacts so that they are held in the actual phone memory and displayed if I opt to display Phone contacts only (i.e. no longer link to my gmail contacts)?
Cheers in advance,
Rich

I think what you need to is to sync your contact again. Contact to display is only show if your phone have a contact that is available in your gmail contact only.

I think you've misunderstood my original question. I have got the contacts visible when I view all contacts or view gmail contacts, but there is an option in the contacts menu to view contacts on phone only (i.e. not those stored in gmail contacts). When I use that option I don't see any of my contacts. Therefore, what I need to be able to do is copy the contacts across from gmail contacts so they are visible in the phone contacts only view, but I can't figure out how to copy them across to the phone.
Never had to do it on either my s2 or s3 before. I did do it on my old HTC via a menu option along the lines of 'Copy contacts to phone' but there isn't a menu option like that on the s3 unless I'm missing something obvious.
Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers.

No numbers for contacts imported by syncing with google?

Can anyone help me solve this problem?
I exported all my old contacts to a CSV. I then updated my Hero's ROM and started fresh. To get my contacts back I just imported them into my google contacts and synced the phone.
It appeared to sync fine, all the contacts came up - but NONE of them have any phone numbers, birthdays, other information that is all clearly there when I view the contacts in gmail.
Birthdays etc I can deal without, but no phone numbers is a BIG problem as I have over 400 contacts and I'm not interested in typing them all back into the phone. Why isn't google contacts sync working correctly?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Though I haven't had a problem with syncing Gmail contacts to my Hero, I would like to know this just in case it happens.
I had trouble synching the contacts I had uploaded to the gmail web site on my wife's phone. we go them to synch correctly by forcing a new synch event.
go Home and press Menu
Select Settings, the "Data Synchronization" form the list that comes up
Select Google from the next list
Under the section "Application sync settings" remove the checkmark next to Contacts
Wait a few seconds then put the checkmark back. This fiorced a synch and pulled up the gmail contacts that were loaded on the web page.
I hope this helps!

[Q] How do I sync phone contacts to google?

The title is the question. Please forgive me, if my searching overlooked the answer.
Just to be clear, my aim is to get "phone" contacts up to google.
I've deleted and removed the "phone" and "sim" contacts. I thought the "phone" contacts were just the stock numbers to check balances and stuff?
Why not just open your gmail and add them manually on your PC so they sync with google.... then go to display options and only show "google"
Thanks, but I'm looking for a non-manual solution.
Manually, I imagine, on the phone I could link all instances of a contact; edit or create a google contact containing the contact details; unlink the google contact; and delete what's left.
With more than a few contacts, that's more work than I'd prefer.
If you want to copy contacts that are saved to the "phone" and get them into your gmail contacts list you can....
open contacts..
press menu..
choose more..
select import/export..
export to sd card...
send that file to your computer or gmail.
in gmail click on contacts..
more actions..
import...
choose file.... the .vcf you created earlier
and gmail will bring them in and if you have sync enabled on your phone everything will be exactly the same on phone and in gmail and the phone..
probably an easier way to do this but this is what i found since i had 80+ numbers from my old blackberry sim

[Q] How to remove groups from Phonebook

I have a question about removing group from the phonebok that were already removed bij an app.
This is what happened:
I installed Contacts GroupU in order to give a lot of contacts the same ringtone.
Because I ran into some problems showing the groups in my phonebook I deleted them.
Now that I figured out how to show contacts in a group in my phonebook I noticed that the old groups are still listed under the Display Groups option in the phonebook. (Sync Groups)
I've installed 3 different group tools, but none of them shows the previously remov group.
Anyone who can tell me how to remove those groups from the list?
I also had some groups that were linked to Gmail, but after deletion there still in the list to.
Even though I do not see them in Gmail.
So I have the same prolem there.
Backup your contacts first. Then og in your gmail account with PC. Delete all contacts in gmail contacts account. Restore your contacts previously backuped.create your contact group again. Sync with gmail.. Done.

Thanks, that will fix my Gmail groups.
But I also have a few double entries under the Phone Contacts.
Any thoughts on how to delete those.
I've deleted them with Contacts GroupU but they are still visible under View Contacts menu - Display Contacts - Phone Contact.
Try make setting don,t auto sync. Actually I hate this auto sync feature too.
And in view contact just tick phone contact only. So changes we make in phone will sync to gmail contact. Not gmail to phone contacts

It is in View Contacts - Phone Contacts that I have double group entries.
I am not able to delete those double entries.
It looks like the apps I used didn't delete the groups properly.
So now I would like to know how to delete those entries.

[Q] Contact issue with SGS2

Hello People,
I use an unrooted SGS2 with offcourse the gingerbread firmware 2.3.3.
I have exported my girlfriends contacts (she has 1500 due to a stupid
actio of hers to sync her facebook friends) and send that file to my phone
for savekeeps.
I accidentally double clicked the file and I ended up with all her contacts.
Ok, so far, so not good.
I have managed to delete all the contacts I didnt want in my phone. Took
some time but ok. Now is where the problem kicks in.
When I want to choose a recipient for a sms I find the complete list of 1500
contacts. the ones I have deleted. I cannot delete the recipients and cannot
where they are hidden. I did delete them and they dont show in my contact
list.
Can anyone help???
While in "Contacts" it shows contacts only from selected accounts (Contacts->Menu->More->Display options-> select accounts that you want to display). But in SMS or email it still shows contacts from all accounts that are registered on the phone.
Your FB contacts probably got imported into some google account or something (try enabling accounts in Contacts->Menu->More->Display options, one by one and when you select the right one, contacts will appear in "Contacts").
You will have to remove contacts from the corresponding account and then go to
Menu->Settings->Accounts and sync->click that account->Sync Contacts.
I does look like a bug to me, but that is how it works now.

[Q] Android Contacts

Hi,
I've been using android device for about 3 years now and recently got a Nexus 4. I'm trying to figure out how to make my Google contacts as my primary contacts so that when I add other accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Linked, etc, I want to sync contacts in my other accounts that are on my Google contacts only. I don't want any other contacts on other accounts to be downloaded. Is this possible?
Thanks.
I don't have it in front of me and tried a couple of different version of OS, but if I'm not mistaking if you go in the settings under your contacts (or maybe in accounts) and you should be able to select with contact/account to show. Personally I only have my google account so I only show those contact but if you have ie. facebook you can also choose to show those contacts as well. Or even only contacts with phone number so in this case I don't get all the contacts in you inbox.
You can also try my favorite app that can be highly customized. Go Contacts...

Thanks. I guess you were right about the option to select which account is shown in the Phone app. I guess my problem was in the Viber contacts. I had the setting to Show All Contacts unchecked because it shows all contacts from LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter which are not on my Google. I noticed that only the Starred in Android are shown if I had this setting. I could set all my Google contacts as Starred in Android but maybe there's another way of doing this.
Sorry for being difficult.
