Fennec Alpha (Firefox) on Android 2.0+ - Droid Eris General

Found this link today with a downloadable .apk of the browser for android phones, one thing is mine keeps closing on me when I try to open don't know if it has to do with my ROM (kaosfroyo v30) or with fennec itself. So if anyone else wants to give it a try and download the .apk provided on the link and install it on their eris and see if it works for them let me know. If it comes down to my rom then I will be talking to the dev and see about maybe getting a fix but if it just doesn't work all accross the board with any rom then I guess the issue would have to be with fennec.
Here is the link:

Do you happen to have the link to the thread?

Well, the alpha has been specifically designed for the N1, so maybe that's why it doesn't run on our depreciated hardware.
I imagine Fennec won't start to work on a wider range of Android devices until it hits beta.

Fennec does work with the eris. I have it working now on kaosfroyo 31. It took almost 5 minutes to load the first time. I have a post over in themes and app section if you want to know how it went after that.
There are 2 different builds for fennec. One is for arm6 processors and one for arm7 processors.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App

Do a google search "fennec for android armv6" to find the build that works on the eris. It is however extremely show and not yet suitable for everyday use.

I know you couldn't put a different camera on white widow roms but has that changed or does anyone know of one that will work? I searched and haven't found much, and the no zoom and that frame thing are horrible.

I don't know of any WhiteWidow ROM supported by anyone in this forum.

You probably won't find support for that rom in xda. He's not a member of this forum. If you need help with it you should be able to track him down on the other forum.
If you want a camera app there are some on the market. I use camera magic for froyo roms.

yes there is still a thread on here about it. the "dev" (ahem) has been perma-banned from XDA, altho he keeps trying to come back under different names. So, no there is no active support for that rom here.

[Q] [ROM] MIUI Port for Eris

Has anyone seen or heard of this? This is one of the best ROMs out there... except for the fact that it is not available on the Eris. Here is a video of what the MIUI ROM looks like. youtube.com/watch?
If anyone know the developer or knows how to contact him/her, then shoot me a pm or please, please, please, contact them and request the ROM port for Eris.

[Q] - New Skype out, can be ported for us?

Hey all,
Looks like a new version of Skype is out on the market but only for select phones...
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/30/skype-with-video-finally-released-on-android/
The phones supported seem to be HTC Desire S, Xperia Pro, Xperia Neo, and Nexus S.
Wondering if this can be ported to work for us some how on our GB builds. Just a question
Wrong section.
To answer your question, the Thunderbolt GB OTA is supposed to be rolling out starting today and will include working skype and talk video chat. It would be easier just to utilize this rather than trying to make a port work on our hardware.

That's why I said supposed. I agree with you the OTA's never come when expected, however, this will be when we really will be receiving truly functional video chat and not before. Like skype was on froyo type of quality.
The new Skype works just fine on the Thunderbolt!
You simply have to have Gingerbread installed to use it.
When they said "select phones" they were referring to phones running Gingerbread.
Simply install Gingerbread and Skype and enjoy!

Runnin' bamf 3.0 and I literally went to the Market searched Skype and installed it.

I'm running Gingeritis and had to use to the patched version for it to work. I have not yet tested phone to phone but phone to PC works.

GTA 3 for Android.

I decided to grab this today, seeing a few comments about some Nexus S users saying it works fine. It's only $5, so what have I got to lose.
It seems to crash after the title screen, phones goes all black screen and stops. Anyone else have any luck? I'm running CM7.1 with the Trinity 1.44GHz kernel. I'm going to try different rom and kernels this evening.
I'm interested in this too. We may have to use chainfire 3d?

I sent an email to Rockstargames NY explaining the situation with FC on the Nexus S. I will let you guys know as soon as I receive a response. I would imagine it would be hard to optimise applications for every different hardware/software combination but I am pretty disappointed in RS that they didn't think to test on the NS considering it's a dev phone.
Like someone previously stated, at the time of my download there is no mention of compatibility with any specific handset so I assumed it would work. I'd say this will be fixed soon, so I won't be after a refund (happy to wait!) but hopefully they respond quickly.
Real nice on my atrix, got it working with sixaxis but the controls arent mapped so will have to work it out by trial and error. Get in/out of car is F and the analogue sticks work out of the box, hopefully someone will work it out and post a list
I bought it this morning and it runs great. I'm on a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 running galaxy task v8 and pershoots kernel oc'd to 1.4GHz. It has occasional lag but its lag that existed on the ps2. Overall I'm happy and it was £3 well spent.

Looks pretty slick.... ics only.... I assume they will make a version for gb phones.
Sucks it's ICS only. Any ideas on why it took them so long to get the ball going for this on Android? I assume ICS got the first release because of hardware acceleration, but you'd think they'd have a previously working version looooong ago.
Does anyone have the APK? We can try and install it anyways...

It does not and will not work without some serious hacking from what I've been told.
It does not work.
Heh, it started for me on my cm9 galaxy tab but then forced closed when i tried to search.

That's because ICS was a major upgrade from Gingerbread, especially at the kernel level. It was more of a rewrite than an upgrade.
Hence, this is looking for ICS libraries. It's possibly also looking for an ICS kernel which we don't have AND won't have unless Verizon decides to release ICS for the X2.
We are at the mercy of Verizon on this one.
Remember, CM9 will still have the GB kernel, not an ICS one since we cannot replace the kernel due to the locked bootloader. Again, at the mercy of Verizon AND Motorola on the locked bootloader.
I've been waiting for Chrome on Android for the entire time I've had an Android (about a year and a half). I just came across an article about on another website, read the whole thing with excitement, and then shot a baby when I read it was only for ICS. WTF?! That's very disappointing to me. Any thoughts as to why they did that? Maybe because it's beta and wanted limited exposure at first?
If they just now started working on getting chrome out then it really doesn't make sense to release it on gingerbread and ics. I would expect that it would be released for their newer os rather than the one that is going to be phased out. Maybe once they get all the bugs worked out they will release a version usable on gingerbread, so phones that won't be updated, or even new phones that aren't as powerful as the phones sporting ics, will be able to use it.

I've been able to use it on my ICS Xoom, and let me say, it is amazing. Comparable to the PC version in terms of performance. I think we should be able to use it with CM9, whenever that is released.

Because we are stuck on the gingerbread kernel, CM9 may not work unless Motorola releases ICS for DX2. As stated earlier, apk needs libraries from the ICS kernel. The only other option is to hack the actual apk.
