Is there any reason we can not use the dialer found in the Epic 4g dump? The reason I ask is because it is the standard Android Dialer with a few extras. I have not really had the chance to use it but I am hoping it will have proper contact management with the ability to view "My Contacts" and not "All Contacts"
Dialer can be seen here

Humm, I like this idea. I don't like the 'Voicemail' tab on the Vibrant dialer, having a contacts tab would be much better.

The stock i9000 dialer and captivate dialer both work on the vibrant, and they both have the "contacts" tab instead of voicemail. I'm not sure if you really need both Phone.apk and DialerTabActivity.apk, but I replaced both on my vibrant, and it works fine so far.
Also, the captivate contacts app works too, though its not much different than the vibrant version, and I've not been able to get the stock i9000 contacts app to work.
FYI, the contacts app will be the real source of fixing the contact management issues you mention, not the dialer app.
Will try the epic dialer & contacts app once I finish deodexing the system dump I downloaded.
cheers,
=)

Yea I realized that after making my post, just thought I would leave it up because of the change to the tabs.

I used to install ASOP Contacts (side by side) on my 4G running 2.3.3 sense based roms
And with 3D it won't install. I used to take the apk from cm7
Sense contact editor is a joke.
Any ideas how to find an apk that works.
Note it is not replacing, it should not need root.

I don't believe you can without root. Contacts, contacts provider and another file have to have same signature or phone will not boot, at least that how it was on OG EVO..

Why did it work on EVO 4G?
I took a Custom Sense/GB base ROM (many of them) most based on "Speedy" (Shift) and close to Stock and took the Contacts.APK from CM7 and it installed fine.
I think my issue is more likely something to do with odex vs deodex.

Ah, I solved half my issue.
I found "Contact Editor" in the Market. Someone took the ASOP code and built JUST the contact editor. It runs side by side and gives you a choice of which to use when you click edit. It's actually built for Froyo 2.2 sources but it works perfect (so far). Now I can actually edit my Notes on a contact. Which is near impossible with the Sense "People" editor.
I'd still like to get the rest of Contacts as well because it works better than the Sense one even though it might not look as slick it's much more functional.

Just curious about something. I remember the contacts that came with MIUI didn't display the custom names associated to a contact's number or email. For example, your contact had a work, home and mobile number and you labeled each as such. The contacts would simply show "Phone" for each number. Does this one do the same thing?
My eyes bleed!!!
It's AOSP not asop!!
(Android open source project)
Still not able to find a perfect dialler
Curious to see which one other SGS2 users use...
Get GO Contact. It comes with a dialer and both apps are really good. One thing I'm VERY happy to finally have is a dialer that searches within names whilst I dial a number, not just the beginning of the name.
Alternatively, get an AOSP ROM so you're using the stock Android dialer. It's simple, but still better than the Samsung one.
I use and recommend rocketdial. It had a good t9 engine for smart dials.
Regards.

I recommend go contacts too, there is a new version out btw called go dialer ex
What's wrong with stock one? Love the unique slide to call feature..

For me the smart dial feature on the stock dialer was not satisfying (only one predefined number per contact to call). On GO Contact its way better solved than on stock
Stock dialer is a joke. Try to dial by typing numbers to get last name.
I miss Htc sense.

I just love the stock dialer sliding. That's the main reason I switched back to a Touchwiz based ROM from a CM7 Nightly.
Also I love the stock Calendar, Clock, Task Manger on long HomeKey press.
Hmmm..will never like the stock dialler if one has tired sense dialler I guess....
The only thing I still misses from sense...
Thanks for your valuable suggestions, but go dialler is driving me nuts..it never searches on my linked contacts properly...say I have linked my bros FB profile with google contacts...go dialler always searches with the facebook name...in google contacts the name is "bro" and I have set the defaults in contacts also..but go dialler does not give results if I type bro...
Hope I am clear here..stock dialler and dialler one searches properly..so far dialer one is the best for me...but appearance sucks and just feels out of place when ever I open it.
Any trick to solve my problem with go dialler? Pls advice

Guys I've also migrated from sense to the SGSII and I highly recommend trying out Dialer One (it's free) - check out the options when setting it up. It can also T9 search by name, number (and other info) and also in the call log...
Touchpal is by far the best dialers i have used.
Youlu is also nice one.
I have bought the SG II and sofar sooner or later I want to get rid of the bloat ware. but for now I like to know whats the best email program.
With a BB all the mail came in one place and you could do anything from there. Is there something like that on a this phone or something I can download.
Also is there a program the lets you organize apps better. Their everywhere!!!
And how do you make the Voice commands work off of the double tap. The rep made it my search button holding it 2 sec. How did he do that?
Also last how do you syn laptop music?

I'll do what I can to help you out.
Best email program - I only have exp with Gmail & TW email. I like them both
Organize programs - AppZorter
sync music - there are a bunch of software that can do it: Kies, Samsung Media something, Media Monkey. Google it & you'll probably get more results than I listed
here is a list for you buddy on what to remove and not to...

to get the apps sorted better i prefer using a different launcher. Launcher pro is the one i use but any of them will put them in alphabetical. Cant believe samsung dont have an option in touchwiz to do that, seems quite a basic omission.
email i just use the stock one but k9 email is also pretty good.
not sure what you mean by the voice commands, you should just tap the home button twice and the voice control screen comes up
Best email: K9 Mail.

point is the standard everyday user shouldnt have to come to xda and download a modded theme just to get the app drawer showing alphabetical. Its a pretty standard request from everyone and a pretty big omission from samsung.

true and i fully agree with you and the way you sort folders in touchwiz is pretty **** compare to the go launcher..but still i think the update of touchwiz fixes all of that now
So I installed the February leaked ICS for S2 and while everything works mostly ok I am missing the contacts tab on my dialer. The Contacts/Groups/etc tabs are on the "Contacts" up but unless I was high in the last few months I remember a 'Contacts' tab being on the dialer too... It's only annoying of course, but maybe I am doing something wrong here. I already tried scrolling the tab area to see if it was hidden somewhere, no game. Also did a wipe on CWM to check if it was the problem and still no contacts tab.

This is not a fix for your problem but an alternative....Just go to the market and try the "Go Contacts" install and put a shortcut to your home....
Google has separated phone and contact app in ICS it used to be one app.
Hence your problem.
There should be another app called Contacts. like an orange rectangle with a silhouette of a man.
You can get into contacts from the phone app by pressing menu and selecting contacts. Google removed the contacts button from the dialer.
Really? That's strange (not to say stupid). Go Dialer is ok I think. Any other Dialer suggestions? I would like one that let me edit the number format (I use the phone in US english and it formats the numbers as xxx xxx xxxx but all my phones are xx xxxx xxxx)
Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but I've heard a lot of good stuff about "Dialer One" on the market. It's free and has decent reviews as well. Good luck!

After updating to ICS on my Droid Bionic, I've been looking for a solution to the odd disappearance of the Contacts tab that I was so used to in Gingerbread. I suppose I could just train myself to open Contacts first instead of dialer when I want to call someone. If I can't seem to remember to do that, I can always open Dialer then tap the menu softkey and select "Search" at the top of the list -- it will take you right to Contacts. This seems to be much easier than installing other contact apps and / or rooting.
Good day.
I take no credit, but figured I'd share.
Links to dark themed dialer, contacts, and messaging
Instructions on installation
Followed this and it worked! I have not tested everything, but dialing out, receiving calls, getting messages and sending messages are all ok. Someone else who tested this method on Verizon mentioned sending pics via messaging was not working, but I did not personally test that.
Also, when I renamed dialer.apk in system/app, my phone was freaking out every two seconds while searching for signal. Made things difficult. I'm guessing if you're in airplane mode, that won't happen.
MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACK UP OF ALL THE FILES BEING REPLACED. This can't be stressed enough. Either back up the files, or make a nandroid backup.

Sending MMS is the only thing I see not working, you can still receive them though. I also have GoSMS and sending MMS through that works fine. Lame workaround but nice to have the dark theme.

works well, but for me, the dialer bottom buttons didn't really change (the bottom row of buttons, voice command, call button, and back button). Very out of place

Yea I don't like the bottom as well. I also noticed that the group message settings isn't there. On the stock version when you get a group message you have 2 tabs at the bottom. One says "Group conversation" and the other says "Individual messages". You could either respond to all or just the one person. I liked that a lot, but this dark version doesn't have that.

Looking at the source thread, it appears that someone would need to make verizon specific customizations to fix the bottom buttons. Unfortunately that's beyong my abilities.

i cant believe that no one has done an international version dialer yet. seems like a lot of devs must like the white dialer
You guys can grab the international dark dialer and contacts from the ATT themes section. Nottach ported it over for his Mint jelly rom. You can also grab it from shostocks rom in the rom section.

Do you have a link ? I did a search for his username in the ATT Themes section and only 1 thread came up. Thanks.
