I used to install ASOP Contacts (side by side) on my 4G running 2.3.3 sense based roms
And with 3D it won't install. I used to take the apk from cm7
Sense contact editor is a joke.
Any ideas how to find an apk that works.
Note it is not replacing, it should not need root.

I don't believe you can without root. Contacts, contacts provider and another file have to have same signature or phone will not boot, at least that how it was on OG EVO..

Why did it work on EVO 4G?
I took a Custom Sense/GB base ROM (many of them) most based on "Speedy" (Shift) and close to Stock and took the Contacts.APK from CM7 and it installed fine.
I think my issue is more likely something to do with odex vs deodex.

Ah, I solved half my issue.
I found "Contact Editor" in the Market. Someone took the ASOP code and built JUST the contact editor. It runs side by side and gives you a choice of which to use when you click edit. It's actually built for Froyo 2.2 sources but it works perfect (so far). Now I can actually edit my Notes on a contact. Which is near impossible with the Sense "People" editor.
I'd still like to get the rest of Contacts as well because it works better than the Sense one even though it might not look as slick it's much more functional.

Just curious about something. I remember the contacts that came with MIUI didn't display the custom names associated to a contact's number or email. For example, your contact had a work, home and mobile number and you labeled each as such. The contacts would simply show "Phone" for each number. Does this one do the same thing?
My eyes bleed!!!
It's AOSP not asop!!

Is there any reason we can not use the dialer found in the Epic 4g dump? The reason I ask is because it is the standard Android Dialer with a few extras. I have not really had the chance to use it but I am hoping it will have proper contact management with the ability to view "My Contacts" and not "All Contacts"

Humm, I like this idea. I don't like the 'Voicemail' tab on the Vibrant dialer, having a contacts tab would be much better.

The stock i9000 dialer and captivate dialer both work on the vibrant, and they both have the "contacts" tab instead of voicemail. I'm not sure if you really need both Phone.apk and DialerTabActivity.apk, but I replaced both on my vibrant, and it works fine so far.
Also, the captivate contacts app works too, though its not much different than the vibrant version, and I've not been able to get the stock i9000 contacts app to work.
FYI, the contacts app will be the real source of fixing the contact management issues you mention, not the dialer app.
Will try the epic dialer & contacts app once I finish deodexing the system dump I downloaded.

can you post the deodexed system dump when your done, i want the launcher.apk thats in there
I'm trying to replace the Glacier's stock Gallery application with the one used originally on the G1. I have found an .apk, but upon replacement with RootExplorer, it does not load as an available app. The gallery app is also available in CM's roms up to v.5 I believe... If anyone can assist me, or maybe post the required .apk I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks I'll give it a shot... Do i need to rename and place in system/app or just install? And based on the name, it seems to be the 3D gallery. I was originally looking for the 2D version (IDK how else to explain it) but I'll try it. Would you have the one I was looking for? Or is it not compatible?

The version i uploaded is a .apk, just download and install. it's not a "flashed" application. Also it is the AOSP stock 3D gallery. I don't have a "2D gallery" but this one is REALLY smooth on our phones.
Yeah its running pretty smooth; doesn't compare to the original one...

i know we are running two different frameworks of Android but i just installed it to my CM7 phone and it worked perfectly. Are you installing it via app manager or trying to flash it/push it.
I tried to push it via better terminal b/c I have s-off with permroot, but no avail. I also tried copy/paste to system/app, but it doesnt show up after a reboot. Third, I even tried installing by just clicking it through a file manager. I have been on google all day and can't find out whats wrong... I even found various versions, supposedly.
I dunno. I just tried it on my wife's phone, still using MySense and it doesn't install. I wonder if it's conflicting with the sense framework.

Go to the market and search QuickPic (one word) and download the one from alensw.com. 2d gallery, works like a charm. Very fast.
I agree with the fellow above, been using QuickPic for about a week now and it's so much faster than the stock htc.album... so much so that I've now deleted the bloated htc.album and use QuickPic as default
So my issue is when my wife's iPhone sends me a MMS photo the Atrix thinks its a video. It won't open it up full screen and actually has a play button and runs it as if it is playing a video.
Any ideas why? Anyone else notice this?
This is with ALL Android phone I have had to date. It shows as if a slideshow. You have 5 secs to view a picture, if more are attached it 5 secs per photo. So if someone send you 3 pictures in 1 mms then you have to watch for @ least 11 seconds to see all 3 pics. Thats just Android in general.
Third party messaging apps such as handcent do not behave this way so I don't understand why stock mms apps insist on doing so.

Long press on the message, and press View Image.
for this reason alone is why i use GO SMS instead of stock messaging app. it is the same way on my captivate and my G2

I think it only happens when a manufacturer overlays their own UI like HTC Sense or MotoBlur. Nevertheless, it is an Android thing.
the bone stock mms apps don't do the slide show, and I dont mean bone stock as the ones that came with your phone that have HTC sense, motoblur, etc. etc
I mean the ones that came with pure android. N1, NS.
If you install the latest Gingerblur you get this functionality. No more slideshows.
Alternatively, ive attached the mms.apk that gingerblur installs. You gotta have root + sideloading capabilities.
rename /system/app/conversations.apk to conversations.apk.bak
copy mms.apk to /system/app
then just fire up your mms app as normal. It looks totally different. if you had the mms app on your homescreen it's now gone. you have to put it there again
I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK WITHOUT THE COMPLETE GINGERBLUR PACKAGE INSTALLED. ATTEMPT AT OWN RISK. although i don't really see the harm in it. if it doesn't work i would imagine just rename mms.apk to mms.apk.bak, and revert conversations.apk.bak back to converstaions.apk

Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
You would have to ask a dev to get that done, such as kenneth, who made gingerblur. I don't have a clue how to do it other than what I outlined above, and from what you say it sounds like whatever other changes gingerblur makes are a prerequisite. Maybe suggest it in the dev forum?
This is a simple mod I made to the stock android 2.2 camera application. It binds the hardware search button to take pictures, since the phone doesn't have a hardware camera button.
I couldn't find something already to accomplish this for me and I figured others may also want a hardware button as I did.
Caveat: The stock 2.2 camera can only take up to 5MP shots or at least that's what it reports. I personally don't mind too much since it's largest use case would self portraits or when you're out with friends.
At any rate I hope it's useful.
*Update*
Okay I've updated and added a few things.
- It will now write to your actual sdcard "sdcard-ext" not the internal one
- I now have for both the 2.2.2 DX2 and the 2.3.3 DX2 for whichever your on.
- I have versions with and without notification bars. I don't like full screen in portrait personally.
I also decided to attach the stock the AOSP gallery I have been using
- This has a 2.2.2 and 2.3.3
- It also has notification bar or full screen
Please pick the proper version. NotificationBar in the name denotes that it is not full screen.
Hope you enjoy.
Very cool. Works great!

TL;DR Version: This wont replace stock. It uses same permissions as the regular one. I assume (GPS) geo-tag and (SMS) for tight picture message integration.
********************************************************************
-------------------------- Long Version --------------------------------------------
********************************************************************
It doesn't remove the stock because it's not the same package name. Android is designed to not let two applications of the same name (package name not display name) reside on the same system. If you try to install a second one it will assume it is an update and replace the old. This will fail because my signing key is not the same as the one on your stock camera application.
You'll have two install cases:
First on a stock android or one without a renamed camera package. This application will not replace it because it's a different package name (com.android.camera vs com.android.cameramod. It will simply run along side it.
Now if you're running this on the Droid X2 or another motoblur I believe the package is renamed on there to com.motoblur.camera or something to that effect. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
As for the permissions those are stock permissions of the AOSP camera application. You can confirm this by going into settings > applications > camera > show permissions.
I don't know them all off of the top of my head but I think (anyone feel free to correct me)
- Your messages - read SMS or MMS (for strong picture message integration ?)
- Your location - fine (GPS) location (geo-tagging pictures)
- Storage - modify/delete SD card contents (to save pictures)
- Phone Calls - read phone state and identity (prevent use while on call ?)
- Hardware controls - record audio, take pictures (it says it right under it...)
- System tools - prevent phone from sleeping (as does this one, obvious no ?)
*EDIT*
Note that it doesn't have network access. If the application was malicious and data mining you how would
it report any information back ?
Ok thanks for the clarification. I am still new to android. I also thought this was modifying the original camera app in some way not actually replacing it. Thnaks for clearing everything up.
@kc9bvi you're modifying the original camera app on the X2 ? Theme or the source ? I'm interested in the latter if you've access to it.
Isn't this just a different cam app?
I installed it and it gave me the stock android cam app when I opened it. The X2 cam app isn't perfect, but I think its better then the plain android one. Is there a way to modify the existing cam app, to make the search button take the pic?
This is not the Droid X2 camera app. It's not widescreen, there's no continual auto focus and the controls are different. It does work as it says it should, however.

Yes it opens the stock one because that's what it was built from. As for modifying the BlurCamera I have considered it and started looking into it. This can be done one of two ways, first and quite obvious if someone has the BlurCamera source I can use, second by using apktool and modifying the code in smali. To do this I need a deodexed BlurCamera.apk. I was trying to do it myself and got this error. If someone can help me with it or has a deodexed 2.2 BlurCamera.apk I can use I would like to try.
The error output is attached if anyone can help with it.

Getting pretty boring with Samsung skinned contact phone and messaging apk, is it possible to replace these with those come with CM9?
Currently running stock ICS LP7 build, can someone point me to the correct file if I wish to totally replace Samsung skinned UI if it's possible.( including the calling and received call UI)
Since stock is odexed, is the .odex counterpart also need to be replace?
No. CM9 = AOSP (I.E Google Android), Samsung = well, crap really (Samsung base). CM9 system apk's/files not compatible with Samsung roms.
You will have to flash any other Rom. Only then will you be able to use custom apps (Replace system apps).

But surprisingly, CM 7 do work

Thanks for the suggestion, but i try to stay away from custom others than CM. Cause my number is both for work and personal, my boss gonna kick my ass if my phone down.
For Market alternative, they can't totally kick out Samsung UI in the process, some doesn't have good contact management like sammy. For feature rich like Go contact Ex, it's simply too slow compare to what sammy offer. Actually i'm pretty satisfied with sammy though the UI is damn ugly, but it have all necessary function and not too bulky with feature until ICS upgrade, which sammy split the contact tab from dialer
