[Q] Replace the whole phone, contact and messaging apk - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Getting pretty boring with Samsung skinned contact phone and messaging apk, is it possible to replace these with those come with CM9?
Currently running stock ICS LP7 build, can someone point me to the correct file if I wish to totally replace Samsung skinned UI if it's possible.( including the calling and received call UI)
Since stock is odexed, is the .odex counterpart also need to be replace?

No. CM9 = AOSP (I.E Google Android), Samsung = well, crap really (Samsung base). CM9 system apk's/files not compatible with Samsung roms.

You will have to flash any other Rom. Only then will you be able to use custom apps (Replace system apps).

thats what custom roms are for. or simpler just install different programs using google play store.........
you can have rocket dial replacing stock dialer .... etc

the cm9 need the AOSP framework
i suggest you hope on to the cyanogenmod boat we got cookies

Why not try Go sms and Go Contacts from play market.

Try flashing:

It doesn't have the ugly Touchwiz interface, which makes it very smooth (look and feel)

i tried but sadly so cookies for me i tried CM9 nightly and resurrection package, but both build give me a phone with no data connectionno matter what setting i put into APN, the setting just won't save (though the phone recognize my carrier) Maybe i didn't flash CM kernal? though i can't find any file telling me he is Mr.Kernel after a quick scroll though CM download page.
But surprisingly, CM 7 do work

Thanks for the suggestion, but i try to stay away from custom others than CM. Cause my number is both for work and personal, my boss gonna kick my ass if my phone down.
For Market alternative, they can't totally kick out Samsung UI in the process, some doesn't have good contact management like sammy. For feature rich like Go contact Ex, it's simply too slow compare to what sammy offer. Actually i'm pretty satisfied with sammy though the UI is damn ugly, but it have all necessary function and not too bulky with feature until ICS upgrade, which sammy split the contact tab from dialer

[ROM][FROYO]Wired CM MOD - Update 12/20/2010

Hey Guys, just after the release of my old ROM, this is a new ROM which is based on Froyo(2.2). I used the Cyanogenmod rom as base and i havent changed a lots except for some minor changes and few additions. The followings features are included:
Features
======
Stock Android UI
Busy-box
Rooted
SuperUser
NANO Editor
As Stable as CM
New Boot Animation
Froyo (2.2.1)
myTouch Music
New Android Market (Check Screenshots)
New Gingerbread Stock Keyboard (Check Screenshot)
Both Launcher Pro And Stock Launcher Included
Some Other Stuff
Removed Stuff
==========
Torchlight From CM
FileManager From cm (Get something from market if you need, that filemanager really bugged me so decided to remove, try ES File Manager, it rocks)
CM Boot Animation
Some other crapware
As this mod is derived from CM, most of the things (I think all) work properly, including wifi, bluetooth and everything else. If anyone finds any bugs or something wrong with the rom, please post it below.
How to install
=========
First root your phone using this method or this method.
Then put the zip file in your sd card and go to clockwork recovery. Then just install the zip file as you would do with every other rom.
If you dont get what i am saying, check this.
This rom asks you which launcher to use in the first boot, check the "Make Default" button and select the launcher of your choice, either launcherpro or default stock froyo launcher. I recomment launcherpro as it is really smooth and has no lags at all (i am using the same). And BTW, if you plan on using stock launcher and no longer want launcherpro on ur system, simply go to manage apps in settings and remove launcherpro as usual (yes, you can remove it). I havent dared to remove the awesome cyanogenmod settings menu because of its cool features and lots of additional functionalities. And the cyanogenmod wallpapers are intact as well.
How to make it look like the one in screenshot
==============================
First choose launcherpro at first boot and make it default.
then go to launcherpro settings (press menu on launcher and choose preferences) and appearance and change the dock's look to froyo wide
Then go back to launcher and long press the screen, and choose wallpaper, and go to cyanogenmod wallpapers and choose the wallpaper as shown in the screenshot.
Then arrange the icons in the same way and you are ready to go.
Enjoy Gingerbread Keyboard And The New Android Market With Lots Of Improvements.
Please let me know if something does not work. THanks
Update 12/20/2010: New Update Coming Very Soon! With WiFi And Tethering Working + More Features And More Stuff
[I am not an android developer, just a simple guy [and a bit of java programmer] ]
I dont think Tmobile is going to give us Froyo within this Dec 15th as rumored by a lots of sites. But for now, lets stay happy with this rom and lets hope they will send the updates soon.
Download ROM
P.S. I can live without negative feedback. (<--Copied it from someone )
can i use headset control on this rom????????????????
OMG, i love this.
but the removal of some apps doesn't appeal to me.
Like file manager, Rom Manager, And the ability to wifi tether is gone.
I was able to wifi tether in the latest versions of CM, but it totally rids it of it in this rom.
Either than that, awesome rom.
Love the boot animation, keyboard, launcher. Keep up the good work. Hope to see more ROMs from you soon!

Wifi works - try reflashing it. Did you do a factory reset before flashing this rom? At minimum, clear your cache.
Using the headphones that came with this phone only works on the stock rom since it was a proprietary thing T Mobile did - why do people keep nagging about this issue?
Wifi tether isn't built into a rom. It a function but must be accesed by an .apk file. Download the latest wifi tether apk (2.0.5 rc1) and install it. BAM! wifi tethering in the palm of your hand.

Contacts app slow to open

Try running a cache cleaner app maybe to have a thorough cache clean, with cache cleaner ng you can select which you want to clean, I pretty much clear all apart from maps, I run it once a day,, keeps things clean and smooth
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
i have the exact same problem too, ive tried over a dozen roms including stock, but the contacts app still lags sometimes for a second and up till 3, currently on clockwork mod recovery, siyah (latest), checkrom v4.
i guess it could be a problem if you have linked contacts to facebook, whatsapp and skype, but i dont know i would have to do some testing before i can tell for sure.
anyone come across a script/fix/modded contacts.apk file yet?
I recently started experiencing this problem also, awkward it happened all of the sudden. I have 300ish contacts
Okay so this is what i know for sure. The contacts app on CM 10 like paranoidandroid works amazing. Its the main reason why im not sticking to a sammy rom. so for sammy rom users try unlinking facebook/skype whatever app from your contacts. If that doesnt work then your contacts have already been filled with heavy bits of info like profile pictures extracted by facebook app etc. So thats whats keeping your contacts laggy. the best fix i can think of is to delete facebook, backup contacs, back em up again with another app to be safe, delete both fb and all contacts. reinstall fb and dont select merge with contacts or whatever it asks. THEN restore contacs. Ill try it when the original sammy jb is released and write back on how quick it loads.
Is there any modded apk for contact apps yet? I've experience the same slowness but I still wanted to stick with sammy.
I used xposed framework to lock it in memory, feel little fast but not so much.
In my old S2 contacts app was really fast... This is sad...

I never found this reliable. But it is Memory management related. Its not the app itself, rather the samsung Android ROM. There's no real solution for this problem if you want to remain on a Samsung ROM.

What do you lose when leaving stock OS (Touchwiz)?

Hello,
I've been on stock kernel/OS since I bought my unbranded I9100 some time ago, that means Gingerbread 2.3.4, I9100XXKI1, Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 (rooted, of course).
I'm thinking about trying CM9 or CM10, just for fun. I think I know pretty well what to expect, but am trying to figure out if there are things I will be missing. As far as I can tell, the following will change significantly:
- Touchwiz launcher replaced, of course. No biggie.
- Swype will be gone, right? I played around with CM way back, and there seemed to be some discussions about how to take Swype with you, but I assume this will be rather hard when going from Gingerbread to JB? Or is there a good way to keep it (without buying it separately)? I like it rather a lot...
- The four hubs (Social Hub etc.) will be gone. Good riddance, as well, I've never used any of them.
- I've not used any of the Samsung remote features (to locate a stolen/lost device; OTA, or KIES), so I guess they will be gone, but I won't miss them.
Is there anything else I've missed that's been added by Samsung? I want to avoid a problem where I don't actually notice anything important missing at first, and then noticing weeks later...
Thank you for your time!
I noticed my camera was missing on one of them.

No tv out. No fm radio. If swype is the keyboard typing style, i dont think thats gone, but i will check.
Camera is still better in stock touchwiz. Also, clear ram from recent apps isnt there.

You could use titanium backup to backup all of your (system) apps. If something (important) turns out to be missing, you can restore it easily. Apart from that, flash it, you won't be disappointed. Good luck with exploring all the possibilities.

Apps only in touchwiz wont work in aosp roms since they are deeply integrated within the touchwiz framework, so no use backup app system apps nor system data. Restoring system data may cause problems ranging from bootloops to force closes.

Alright, the clock. I use that a lot, all of it (alarm + timer + stopwatch). That would be a bummer to loose, I guess there will be some useful replacements on the market though.
There are plenty of camera apps around. Can I safely assume that the picture quality (as it is) will be the same as with the stock camera app? I use the camera for taking pictures, I need no effects, online stuff etc. around photos. In fact I am not that happy with the stock camera, as I find it tough to shoot a photo when I don't see the screen... so I'll be happy to hunt for a camera app that supports some of the hardware buttons for shooting.

I'm about to root for the first time and I've always done a backup of my stock out-of-the-box ROM before flashing anything so I don't have to rummage through threads later looking for the stock ROM for my phone to unroot to.
Coming from the Android phones I've had, Titanium was what I always used to do a full backup. Is there somewhere though, just to be safe, that has the exact ROM for my SFR GS3 I9300?

Ok great. All I really want to know for sure is that when I do test any ROM for this phone I already have a complete copy of it sitting somewhere in case I ever need to sell it or return it.
Going to try some Vanilla JB (Foxhound or something). I wish there was a JB ROM that had Samsung apps but no Touchwiz. Doesn't exist apparently.

Well, all the homescreens are pretty similar in terms of app layout, etc. But also with Touchwiz I'm not crazy about the app deck, the menu system, the Samsung camera, the notifications bar, etc. Why?

I was going to say if it's just the launcher you don't like....then use another....but if you want aosp look and feel then no Samsung apps, simple as
I'm surprised someone hasn't made those APKs available.

They rely on the TW framework, that is why
Well, that makes sense.
Yeah, what I meant before was that pretty much every ROM looks the same when you're flipping through home screens. It's in the menu system that you really see differences and I just don't like the big blocky, slightly iOS-ish look of the menus within apps and contacts, etc.
But I would love a ROM that keeps all the motion features. And wifi tethering is a must.
Just spent a whole lot of time looking at several ROMs in original and regular Android dev forums. Is there not a single JB Vanilla that has WiFi tethering and has the motion functions? All of them seem to say tethering is not possible.
What a shame. I haven't read every last ROM but I've pretty much seen them all.
Wifi/bluetooth tethering doesn't work on aosp/cm roms but last time i used this with my sammy secondary rom to connect my tablet to the net it worked.
And if you quit the official sammy world don't care about csc its only utility is to drive samsung OTA update (mine is 'unknown' ).
Ohhhh, I see. What a shame.
So my only choice is to find a secondary Samsung ROM? I was hoping for a more Vanilla JB feel throughout the phone and also for a different camera. But I do need to be able to connect my tablet. Plus, SFR gives me an app to tether with that works quite well. Only problem is that righ now my Galaxy tab 7 with an ICS ROM isnt connecting to any local WiFi here in Paris anyway for some reason.
Well, thanks.

[Q] Want to install vanilla Android MMS app but can't figure out how!

Okay, before I get flamed, hear me out. I really have tried everything. I've searched through every forum possible for a solution to this problem. But I just can't fix it!
I want to install the stock Android ICS MMS app because the TouchWiz one looks like ass. I tried to follow all steps as closely as possible, moving things around properly and fixing permissions. But every time, it gets access to all my messages, but when I try to send or view anything, it crashes. Every single time.
Any tips? Thanks so much in advance for your help.
Phone information disclosure:
Running the stock (rooted) UCLE5 4.0.3 update with a modified kernel

Try wiping the data on your phone. There's still the app data from the tw messaging app on the /data/data section in your storage so that could be causing it to crash. If that doesn't work then you're missing some framework files or something Like that which would be way to much work to put in

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, that probably could be what it is. But I haven't done a full wipe in a while and I don't really want to do one. Thanks for the help though! But I don't want the stock messaging app that badly.
Not a full wipe. Manage apps, clear cache on MMS.
I'm not sure you can install an AOSP mms app on a touchwiz Rom. Unless there's an app somewhere in the app and themes section. I was assuming you were just trying to rip it from an aosp based Rom and stick it in this other one.
As stated above, if you are using a touch wiz rom then you CAN NOT use any AOSP based app. You have to be on an AOSP based rom for it to work
