Contacts app slow to open - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title says it all.
I have around 8000 contacts. At first when i got it it would open right away. Now it takes a minute or two even after restart

lol, 8000 contacts?! Can't imagine why it takes a while to open?! You have contact pics too?!

Nope no pics. I know its a lot
Problem was it was working fine then it just flipped on me

Try running a cache cleaner app maybe to have a thorough cache clean, with cache cleaner ng you can select which you want to clean, I pretty much clear all apart from maps, I run it once a day,, keeps things clean and smooth

i have the exact same problem too, ive tried over a dozen roms including stock, but the contacts app still lags sometimes for a second and up till 3, currently on clockwork mod recovery, siyah (latest), checkrom v4.
i guess it could be a problem if you have linked contacts to facebook, whatsapp and skype, but i dont know i would have to do some testing before i can tell for sure.
anyone come across a script/fix/modded contacts.apk file yet?

I recently started experiencing this problem also, awkward it happened all of the sudden. I have 300ish contacts

Okay so this is what i know for sure. The contacts app on CM 10 like paranoidandroid works amazing. Its the main reason why im not sticking to a sammy rom. so for sammy rom users try unlinking facebook/skype whatever app from your contacts. If that doesnt work then your contacts have already been filled with heavy bits of info like profile pictures extracted by facebook app etc. So thats whats keeping your contacts laggy. the best fix i can think of is to delete facebook, backup contacs, back em up again with another app to be safe, delete both fb and all contacts. reinstall fb and dont select merge with contacts or whatever it asks. THEN restore contacs. Ill try it when the original sammy jb is released and write back on how quick it loads.

Is there any modded apk for contact apps yet? I've experience the same slowness but I still wanted to stick with sammy.

I used xposed framework to lock it in memory, feel little fast but not so much.
In my old S2 contacts app was really fast... This is sad...

I never found this reliable. But it is Memory management related. Its not the app itself, rather the samsung Android ROM. There's no real solution for this problem if you want to remain on a Samsung ROM.

Do you know if this happens in s4 or note 2 as well?
I want to buy a Galaxy Note 2, does he have the same problem?

I don't know. I don't own those devices.

2.1 is so so slow

Not sure why so many apps are consuming so much CPU power. Like face recognition, home, other google stuff. It's been over a day and still theses apps are processing or whatever they are doing
Kinda disappointed with 2.1 atm.

Simply use Titanium Backup to freeze apps. No need to delete anything.
I noticed huge lag as well while playing with the phone for the first 15mins and thought it would get used to the new OS, it didn't. One solution I found, and worked for many people was simply restarting the phone. Now my phone doesn't seem like the same laggy X10 I had. For Titanium Backup info and instructions, here is the developer's official wiki: http://matrixrewriter.com/wiki/tiki-index.php if that doesn't help use the search feature on XDA, or Google it...
Also when deleting Sony apps be careful things like Mediascape are used for putting contact pics in your phonebook, etc. It is also the default mediaplayer so don't delete it. Same with Timescape, if you use your phonebook contacts connected from facebook, I noticed some data is taken from Timescape.
Somethings that I can confirm are safe to delete:
1. Moxier Mail
2. Wise Pilot
3. Creatouch
Before doing this, backup everything with Titanium Backup, no harm in backing up
Well I've been running 2.1 since the day it was released and I've rooted but haven't uninstalled anything and everything is running smoothly for me. As it is for my two mates.
It runs a lot faster then the Galaxy S 2.1.
I haven't come across any lag yet.

I followed the advice on this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826491
i just installed the update but my phone kindda lagg..
any solutions on this?
Just wait for few minutes. New Dalvik VM is on its way so it is a bit slow to start . Give it ~10-15 mins.
Patience Required
I have done some research and testing, Found that mainly face recon, media apps, Google Sync, where draining power but leaving on phone overnight, charging it had finished processing all the pictures and synced data on my phone, of course you can remove apps but I wouldn't recommend any SE based ones as they all control certain parts to improve phone quality.

I was one of the first that got the oficiall 2.1 update and i stumbled upon something.
When i got it i just used google sync on almost everything. but then i realised i needed some apps that i had made a backup of by using MyBackup PRO. So i thought that "oh well, might just sync the contacts again".
Thats when all hell started to break loose on my poor phone, it was lagging like CRAZY, all the time. Didnt matter what i did, still the same issue...
So i formated and reinstalled everything on the phone, and everything was going extremly smooth. Like the first time experience all over again.
Then i realized "Damn, i havent restored my contacts" and then it hit me. All my problems started when i restored contacts using ANYTHING else BUT Google's own sync. Cuz once i was going to restore it using MyBackupPro it said something about not being able to restore cuz no Google account was found on contacts, but i already had logged in my entire phone with my google account, exxept syncing my contacts with Google.
So my guess is that they have incorporated the contacts too much with Timescape and Google Sync so if u use like Titanium Pro or MyBackup or watever backup program, it will give u issues with this update.
But its meerly a speculation from my side...
Other Point....
The other thing I did notice a lot of is the developer/Diagnostic tool this I imagine will be used to send logs and stats back to SE for 2.1 optimisations for newer firmware, Though it very random at times.

I think i'm going to freeze it with Titanium.
Also another process running is R2R or something.

Remove "Home" and use a 3rd party launcher (LauncherPro, ADW Launcher)
You will be surprised how much quicker they are
what can be deleted
There is much better way to clean SE garbage applications than manual delete
use SystemApp Remover it is commercial applications it can be found here http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/systemapp-remover_kbyr.html
price is 1$
it works great on rooted x10i
applications are uninstalled from phone as they were never installed.
Safe to uninstall:
Korean keyboard
Japanese keyboard
Chinese keyboard
Danish keyboard
TrackID
moxiemail
quadrapop
backup & recovery
facebook
Wise Pilot
Creatouch
playnow and two accompanying files
there are some others like e-manual etc. But search forum for more complete list and SystemApp Remover can backup applications before uninstall so you can restore them if things go south
for contact backup use SE sync it is a good one if you use other SE phones
that's my 2 cents

[Q] texting app crapware

Hi,
Please tell me how to get rid of the god-awful slow texting app that comes with this phone, and replace it with the stock android texting app.
Thanks!
Are you referring to the AT&T messages app? 'Cause the SMS app that comes stock works fine for me :/
Stock messages app works fine for me. If you have root you may be able to find differnt message apps, but my first suggestion is to give handcent a try as it is my go to sms app for when I'm having issues with cusom ROMs being buggy with mms. Its got a threaded look to it, much like iphone.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDIxMiwiY29tLmhhbmRjZW50Lm5leHRzbXMiXQ..
It also has font packs and other stuff on the app store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=handcent_market
I far prefer GO SMS Pro, love the interface and features, but with all the third-party SMS apps I have an issue of double and triple texts being sent to people. I agree the Samsung SMS app is painfully slow. I hate using it, but it's my only choice because it doesn't send out duplicate texts. :/

Thats very odd, I've never got complaint of this. Have you googled the issue to see if there is a known solution or work around? As common as these apps are you can't possibly be the only one misfortunate enough to experience this. I have had issues in the past getting numerous notifications despite turning native notifications off for SMS, but thats an entirely different issue.
How do i replace the Samsung message app with the vanilla android one? The Samsung one is slow and is a failed attempt at copying iphone. The keyboard even blocks the send button!

Mostly I see people on ICS complaining about this issue, but there are several people on GB complaining about it as well, for both GO SMS and Handcent and a few others on Google Play.
I had the duplicate notification issue with Handcent - even though I had disabled notifications for the stock app AND frozen it. Didn't have that problem with GO SMS. Had an odd problem when I tried Chomp SMS, where all incoming messages were anonymous and upon trying to view them, the message couldn't be found. That even happened in the stock app, so long as I had Chomp installed. Uninstalling fixed that issue immediately.
But so far as I can tell, some people just have the problem, and most don't. I have yet to see a reply from any of the devs about the issue. I've tried completely resetting the phone to factory spec but I still got the duplicate message issue.
I really, REALLY want to use GO SMS. Although something else I noticed is that some people's messages were being sent to the wrong contacts... Perhaps I'll try the vanilla Android apk...
How do you try the vanilla android apk?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
This is the ics messenger app, you can try it without needing root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mms.ics.ext
Thanks but I don't really want a third party version with ads. I don't get it...isn't there a plain messaging app that comes with android (like what was on the nexus one), or is it proprietary to every device? It seems like this shouldn't be such a difficult thing to install instead of the crappy samsung one. Am I missing something?
i'm surprised. the sms app is not bad i'm the note. I've seen worse. (though i am using the rogers version)
I'm coming from a rooted Inspire 4G (cyanogen) and I've noticed that the texting on the Samsung Messaging app is a bit sluggish. And some keys don't respond to my fast fingers.. Yet the app itself runs very fast (ie open app, open threads, go back, etc).
One thing I did was uninstall Swype through Titanium and I think I've noticed a difference in the keyboard speed. It may just be my imagination though
Sent from Galaxy Note
I'm using go SMS, no issues..as long as I leave stock installed and not frozen..if I do..no mms messages

What do you lose when leaving stock OS (Touchwiz)?

Hello,
I've been on stock kernel/OS since I bought my unbranded I9100 some time ago, that means Gingerbread 2.3.4, I9100XXKI1, Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4-CL575468 (rooted, of course).
I'm thinking about trying CM9 or CM10, just for fun. I think I know pretty well what to expect, but am trying to figure out if there are things I will be missing. As far as I can tell, the following will change significantly:
- Touchwiz launcher replaced, of course. No biggie.
- Swype will be gone, right? I played around with CM way back, and there seemed to be some discussions about how to take Swype with you, but I assume this will be rather hard when going from Gingerbread to JB? Or is there a good way to keep it (without buying it separately)? I like it rather a lot...
- The four hubs (Social Hub etc.) will be gone. Good riddance, as well, I've never used any of them.
- I've not used any of the Samsung remote features (to locate a stolen/lost device; OTA, or KIES), so I guess they will be gone, but I won't miss them.
Is there anything else I've missed that's been added by Samsung? I want to avoid a problem where I don't actually notice anything important missing at first, and then noticing weeks later...
Thank you for your time!
I noticed my camera was missing on one of them.

No tv out. No fm radio. If swype is the keyboard typing style, i dont think thats gone, but i will check.

You could use titanium backup to backup all of your (system) apps. If something (important) turns out to be missing, you can restore it easily. Apart from that, flash it, you won't be disappointed. Good luck with exploring all the possibilities.

Apps only in touchwiz wont work in aosp roms since they are deeply integrated within the touchwiz framework, so no use backup app system apps nor system data. Restoring system data may cause problems ranging from bootloops to force closes.

Alright, the clock. I use that a lot, all of it (alarm + timer + stopwatch). That would be a bummer to loose, I guess there will be some useful replacements on the market though.
There are plenty of camera apps around. Can I safely assume that the picture quality (as it is) will be the same as with the stock camera app? I use the camera for taking pictures, I need no effects, online stuff etc. around photos. In fact I am not that happy with the stock camera, as I find it tough to shoot a photo when I don't see the screen... so I'll be happy to hunt for a camera app that supports some of the hardware buttons for shooting.

Well yes, but I'll have to register/pay for it, or don't I?
Is there a way to see which app is Samsung specific, on the phone itself? Or is basically *any* app that shipped with it either in gapps or by Samsung/Touchwiz?

lag in dialer and contacts app, a different kind

In my s3 I have the same problem, but in addition to that when I try to access call logs of particular person from logs tab by touching records, it does not open when I turn off the phone, take the battery out for 4-5 seconds then I am able to access it, after a day or two the same problem shows up.
what to do? any permanent solution?

[GO] Phone answering lags on 4.1.2

Maybe some of you recognised this problem too, but after I used the search button I didn't find anything.
So after I upgraded my ST27i from ICS to JB, I'm experiencing heavy lags when someone calls me. Usually when I try answer the call, I have to wait about 8-10 sec to actually answer that call and to start talking.
I've tried it on stock JB, and custom JB too but both of them have the same issue. On ICS everything is working fine without bugs.
Anyone got some solution for it?

You rooted? Try adding this at the end of your build.prop see if it makes a difference.
sys.keep_app_1=com.sonyericsson.android.socialphonebook
JB.400 xGO Rooted, Unlocked, Debloated, Greenified

Maybe some of you recognised this problem too, but after I used the search button I didn't find anything.
So after I upgraded my ST27i from ICS to JB, I'm experiencing heavy lags when someone calls me. Usually when I try answer the call, I have to wait about 8-10 sec to actually answer that call and to start talking.
I've tried it on stock JB, and custom JB too but both of them have the same issue. On ICS everything is working fine without bugs.
Anyone got some solution for it?
Best Regards,

Hi. Any solutions for this problem? Have been facing the same thing for months...
Delete call history
I think the only way to fix this is to download apps from play store call "Ex dialer"nearly all Xperia u user rate it 5 star.
Correct me if I'm wrong
If you have CWM, wipe cache partition and use Seeder 2.0
This is a ram management problem causes phone to release all apps in memory and then reboots phone I have solved my problem by installing clean master from the play store and after its setup not 1 hang from phone.apk calling out and incoming fine
Sent from my Xperia Go using xda app-developers app

Can you please post the setup?
Finally I got some new results today, after struggling with this problem for months.
First I tried all the suggested methods (clearing the call log, installing all those apps), and none of them worked -- except CWM that I didn't try, because I wasn't root.
What solved my problem, was to do a clean flash (and wipe everything during flashing). The problem was totally gone. Note that "wiping every thing" during flashing is a key thing that I guess last time I hadn't done.
Everything was good until I restored all my backed up contacts -- around 1500 contacts. Then it was laggy again!
Then I again did a hard reset. Problem was gone again. But this time I was lucky enough to restore the contacts, and have my system in a healthy state -- no lags so far! I don't know what was different this time, but it's got to have something to do with the contacts!
I'll keep you updated if I find any changes -- worth reporting.

Just remove any VOIP software you have like viber, skype , etc. I know you might be using them but yeah sony's rom has issues with viber specially which causes this lag.. if u wanna use viber use a cm rom or stock ics, or gb. JB is buggy in terms of 3rd party VOIP support

Should I unlock my bootloader & use a custom kernel? Will that solve the problem?
