This is a simple mod I made to the stock android 2.2 camera application. It binds the hardware search button to take pictures, since the phone doesn't have a hardware camera button.
I couldn't find something already to accomplish this for me and I figured others may also want a hardware button as I did.
Caveat: The stock 2.2 camera can only take up to 5MP shots or at least that's what it reports. I personally don't mind too much since it's largest use case would self portraits or when you're out with friends.
At any rate I hope it's useful.
*Update*
Okay I've updated and added a few things.
- It will now write to your actual sdcard "sdcard-ext" not the internal one
- I now have for both the 2.2.2 DX2 and the 2.3.3 DX2 for whichever your on.
- I have versions with and without notification bars. I don't like full screen in portrait personally.
I also decided to attach the stock the AOSP gallery I have been using
- This has a 2.2.2 and 2.3.3
- It also has notification bar or full screen
Please pick the proper version. NotificationBar in the name denotes that it is not full screen.
Hope you enjoy.
Very cool. Works great!

IF i wanted to go back to stock after installing this what would i do? Also why is this wanting full permissions to install? Why does it need gps loaction and to be able to look at sms messages

TL;DR Version: This wont replace stock. It uses same permissions as the regular one. I assume (GPS) geo-tag and (SMS) for tight picture message integration.
********************************************************************
-------------------------- Long Version --------------------------------------------
********************************************************************
It doesn't remove the stock because it's not the same package name. Android is designed to not let two applications of the same name (package name not display name) reside on the same system. If you try to install a second one it will assume it is an update and replace the old. This will fail because my signing key is not the same as the one on your stock camera application.
You'll have two install cases:
First on a stock android or one without a renamed camera package. This application will not replace it because it's a different package name (com.android.camera vs com.android.cameramod. It will simply run along side it.
Now if you're running this on the Droid X2 or another motoblur I believe the package is renamed on there to com.motoblur.camera or something to that effect. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
As for the permissions those are stock permissions of the AOSP camera application. You can confirm this by going into settings > applications > camera > show permissions.
I don't know them all off of the top of my head but I think (anyone feel free to correct me)
- Your messages - read SMS or MMS (for strong picture message integration ?)
- Your location - fine (GPS) location (geo-tagging pictures)
- Storage - modify/delete SD card contents (to save pictures)
- Phone Calls - read phone state and identity (prevent use while on call ?)
- Hardware controls - record audio, take pictures (it says it right under it...)
- System tools - prevent phone from sleeping (as does this one, obvious no ?)
*EDIT*
Note that it doesn't have network access. If the application was malicious and data mining you how would
it report any information back ?
Ok thanks for the clarification. I am still new to android. I also thought this was modifying the original camera app in some way not actually replacing it. Thnaks for clearing everything up.
@kc9bvi you're modifying the original camera app on the X2 ? Theme or the source ? I'm interested in the latter if you've access to it.
Isn't this just a different cam app?
I installed it and it gave me the stock android cam app when I opened it. The X2 cam app isn't perfect, but I think its better then the plain android one. Is there a way to modify the existing cam app, to make the search button take the pic?
This is not the Droid X2 camera app. It's not widescreen, there's no continual auto focus and the controls are different. It does work as it says it should, however.

Yes it opens the stock one because that's what it was built from. As for modifying the BlurCamera I have considered it and started looking into it. This can be done one of two ways, first and quite obvious if someone has the BlurCamera source I can use, second by using apktool and modifying the code in smali. To do this I need a deodexed BlurCamera.apk. I was trying to do it myself and got this error. If someone can help me with it or has a deodexed 2.2 BlurCamera.apk I can use I would like to try.
The error output is attached if anyone can help with it.

I did not say it was the Droid X2 camera app I said it was the stock android 2.2 one, which it is. You may have misread it. I am sorry if the thread title is misleading.

I've Noticed On Any ROM So Far That Sometimes The Stock Browser Won't Download At Times. Couple Good Browsers Free In The Market Are Skyfire And Boat Browser Mini. Good Luck.
I've updated it. Check the main post.
Thanks, I will try it on my DX2
A shame it can't push 8mp huh. But I love having it sync to the non fail gallery
A very sincere thank you to the OP for making these apps with so many options. Your work.is greatly appreciated!

So my issue is when my wife's iPhone sends me a MMS photo the Atrix thinks its a video. It won't open it up full screen and actually has a play button and runs it as if it is playing a video.
Any ideas why? Anyone else notice this?
This is with ALL Android phone I have had to date. It shows as if a slideshow. You have 5 secs to view a picture, if more are attached it 5 secs per photo. So if someone send you 3 pictures in 1 mms then you have to watch for @ least 11 seconds to see all 3 pics. Thats just Android in general.
Third party messaging apps such as handcent do not behave this way so I don't understand why stock mms apps insist on doing so.

for this reason alone is why i use GO SMS instead of stock messaging app. it is the same way on my captivate and my G2

I think it only happens when a manufacturer overlays their own UI like HTC Sense or MotoBlur. Nevertheless, it is an Android thing.
the bone stock mms apps don't do the slide show, and I dont mean bone stock as the ones that came with your phone that have HTC sense, motoblur, etc. etc
I mean the ones that came with pure android. N1, NS.
If you install the latest Gingerblur you get this functionality. No more slideshows.
Alternatively, ive attached the mms.apk that gingerblur installs. You gotta have root + sideloading capabilities.
rename /system/app/conversations.apk to conversations.apk.bak
copy mms.apk to /system/app
then just fire up your mms app as normal. It looks totally different. if you had the mms app on your homescreen it's now gone. you have to put it there again
I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS WILL WORK WITHOUT THE COMPLETE GINGERBLUR PACKAGE INSTALLED. ATTEMPT AT OWN RISK. although i don't really see the harm in it. if it doesn't work i would imagine just rename mms.apk to mms.apk.bak, and revert conversations.apk.bak back to converstaions.apk

Unfortunately a no go... this would be nice to have... think we can get this repackaged as a stand alone apk that we can install?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
You would have to ask a dev to get that done, such as kenneth, who made gingerblur. I don't have a clue how to do it other than what I outlined above, and from what you say it sounds like whatever other changes gingerblur makes are a prerequisite. Maybe suggest it in the dev forum?
ok, am a newbie here and this is my first post, so please be gentle if i go wrong or violate any rule of the forum. basically, i wish to know what are the applications that we can strip out of the MiniCM6 ROM. i got rid of many .apk's which i felt was not actually needed by me. Eg - Development.apk, DPS Manager .apk, CMWallpapers.apk, LiveWallpapers.apk, etc.
i also got rid of the stock MiniCM camera app and replaced with the Stock SE Mini camera app...the picture quality has improved significantly than the MiniCM's bundled camera app.
Could you pls shed some light on how exactly you ported the stock SE camera to miniCM6 as i ve been trying this for a while now but still not able to. Thanks.
please make a rom, call it "Minimalist MiniCM" for the average joe. ill beta test!

get root explorer v2.15,install it and open it.tap "mount as r/w", next go to your root/system/app (again tap "mount as r/w" if it is r/o) and delete the "camera.apk" there. then, copy the attached file (DO not install now) to root/system/app. next, "click and hold" the copied file and open "permissions" and tick all the permissions. next click the camera.apk and select "install". done!!
enjoy your Camera!!!!....the only problem is that if you have to delete your file, u have to navigate it manually and delete it, u cannot delete it in the "camera preview" mode, it will FC the camera.

that is a nice idea, but since it is just a stripped down version of a ROM, will i not be violating any rules or something????....u know, i am a noob, not very much familiar with the rules of the forum
since i have uninstalled MOST of the apps, my battery life has increased significantly. the available space in phone storage is 202 MB!!!!!....i even got rid of MOST of the "data" involving apps including GMaps, street plugin & twitter(Silly, i know!!! but i actually don't need them and they run on the background to eat up the battery and also my available data).
the overall experience is the cell runs faster and the battery is almost running for 1 and a half day with moderate to heavy use.
i am already convinced, make a rom AND RELEASE IT TO THE PUBLIC! plz
My changes:
The following apps are removed:
1.AndroidTerm.apk
2.CarHomeGoogle.apk
3.CarHomeLauncher.apk
4.CMWallpapers.apk
5.Development.apk
6.DSPManager.apk
7.GenieWidget.apk
8.GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk (don't get anxious, u WILL get a google search box, EVEN if i removed this )
9.HTC_IME_lo15.apk
10.Launcher2.apk
11.LauncherPro -0.8.4.1.apk
12.LiveWallpapers.apk (livewallpaperpicker.apk is still there, so u can pick your own LWP, just uninstalled the included livewallpapers)
13.MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
14.MAPS.apk (silly, i know )
15.MUSIC.apk (replaced it with the 2.3 Gingerbread music app)
16.Radio.apk
17.Soundback.apk
18.SoundRecorder.apk
19.street.apk
20.LatinIME.apk (installed the gingerbread keyboard instead)
21.Camera.apk (uninstalled the MiniCM camera app and replaced it with the stock SE x10 mini camera app. the quality of the pictures are better and the video recording got back the continious autofocus back )
22. VoiceSearch.apk
23.VoiceDialer.apk
Added:
1. Simple Task Manager .apk
2.App 2 SD pro.apk
3.Stock SECamera.apk
4.Gingerbread keyboard.apk
5.Zeam Launcher (it is the lightest launcher which incoporates multitouch "pinch to zoom")
6.RootExplorer v2.15 .apk
7.SlideIT keyboard .apk (Swype replacement for x10 mini)
My question is, can i release it WITHOUT offending respectable developers and the forum rules????
who would it offend? as long as you are using only free apps though. :S

Give proper credits and links to the original ROM in your main post and I doubt anybody will be offended
As long as you give people credit it's fine, everything is open source, thats the beauty of Android.
Having said that, I don't really see the point of doing it! It would be much easier for people wanting a stripped version just to uninstall the apps themselves. Get Titanium Backup from the market and uninstall all the .apk files listed in a previous post and you've done it! Much easier than having to backup everything, and install a Rom then fiddle with all your settings again to get them all how you like them

Also, you wouldn't be able to release one that had Root Explorer pre-installed, that's a paid app (and well worth paying for! )

Is there anyway to use the stock (or even the cyanogen modded) stock apps on the DroidX2. I've already tried copying them over to system/app and correcting permissions and even with a reboot, they don't show up.
Does anyone have any suggestions? In particular the stock sms/mms app and the stock calendar application.

god i miss my Nexus S
I'm sure once we see an OTA update, we'll have a better chance at unlocking the bastage. At least we have a leaked SBF file to help with those who have bricked. There's more incentive to hacking.
I just downloaded the extended version of the mms app from
http://www.droid-life.com/2010/04/15/download-new-mms-apk-with-custom-settings/
So far, it seems to work other then force closing when trying to change the font size... Hopefully It'll keep on working. It isn't the latest version that comes with cyano 7 but it'll do.
Next is trying to get the extended setting version of the dialer. I think thats going to be much harder to do
Note - The messaging app does work, but it force closes everytime you send a message out, although it does send the message out. DAMN BLUR!
I use a sms/MMS app that I took from a custom ROM about a year ago. I can't stand the MOTOBLUR sms/mms app, and this one looms more like the OG Droid app.

Hi, can you explain how you did that? I tried the one off of the current cyanogenmod 7 and it didn't work, and I tried a much earlier version I found on here, but it would force close after each message it sent.
The good news is that it looks like someone has gotten a custom recovery put on their x2 so developer progress is moving forward.

I had initially installed the program from my SD card, and that worked fine for the most part. It wasn't until about a week or so ago that it started giving me problems. I finally figured out to actually copy my MMS.apk to the system/app folder and then set the permissions to rw-r-r and then rebooted. This has worked for my X² and my husband's X and now both phones are working beautifully. I used Titanium Backup Pro to freeze the stock Text Messaging so that I don't get duplicate messages.

The update that just was released today works very well.... I'm sure you can find a link to it on the main android dev section.
I am hoping this is in the right section, since it would be dev or hacking to get what I am looking for.
I am currently using P3Droid's pre-rooted 2.3.3. Video recording on the camera is limited to 640x480.
Verizon and Motorola's sites both list "720p video recording" as a feature.
What happened to the 720p option?
Can the camera be modded to re-include this option?

When u press menu while in video or camera mode and bring up the settings u should have a choice of which video resolution u would like to use. Unless you don't have the same camera.apk that came with hour phone it may be different then. It should be there though.
Thanks for the reply, however, it is not there. I the highest resolution I have is 640x480.
It's not a problem for me alone evidently, it is listed in this issues thread as well:

Same here, not sure what OP has going on. Standard GB 2.3.3 X2.
Okay. I was trying to just upload my apk into this thread but I can't seem to choose the file using my phone. My computer isn't working. If I can get to a comp I will do it asap or if I can find another way.
Im having issues recording 720p. I can click the option, even in the pre-rooted gb update. My issue is that I can not get good quality. After 15 or so seconds the video and audio become out of sync and the video "skips" for like 50ms and sometimes longer thus causing issues when uploading to Youtube and Facebook.
Sorry for Hijacking your thread, but this was already started and I felt it was appropriate. As to your question, it sounds like you have an incorrect camera app. You MAY need to flash/inject the camera/camcorder/gallery .apks.. To my knowledge, they all opperate together, because the options work off each other. Have u froze/deleted any of those .apks?
Hello everybody,
I've just installed a new ROM on my Razr XT910 (Way Away 1.0.5) and I'm having this problem with the media gallery everytime I take a picture and click on the miniature to open it.
The error message says: "Media gallery not installed"
Anyone knows how to solve it?
Thanks in advance.
You could always install a camera app from the Play Store and use it instead. (Make sure the app has the option to save pictures on your SD)
Also, let the developer of your ROM know of this issue so he/she can prevent future users of having it.

Thanks for your help Zack, I've already ask for help with the dev, but he just didn't answer.
Can you recomend a good (I mean the best) camera app to use on my Razr?
Thanks again.
I'm not sure about the system you're using, but Motorola camera applications are related to Motorola gallery applications. If you are using Droid RAZR M camera (MotCamera.apk, with an icon like this), you must have Droid RAZR M gallery (MotGallery2.apk) in order to access pictures from camera miniatures, otherwise you will have the error you said. If you are using Droid RAZR camera (BlurCamera.apk, with an icon like this), you must have Droid RAZR gallery (MotGallery.apk).

I quit! I couldn't find the damn app for the gallery so instead I've just downloaded a third party app for the camera (Camera MX) and it's working fine right now.
Btw, this camera is really nice and quite better than stock... I'm using it as default. Thanks again for your help
You're welcome. The new camera and gallery applications are way better than the older ones and I haven't found a single bug since I first tried them, months ago, so I don't have the old files (BlurCamera.apk and MotGallery.apk) anymore, but I have the new ones (MotCamera.apk and MotGallery2.apk). You can easily replace them, just rename the old *.apk files to *.bak (if you want to back up them), push the new *.apk files to /system/app/, set permissions (-rw-r--r--) and reboot. You will then have both updated stock camera and gallery applications installed and working perfectly.
Camera is not really much different, but it's faster. Gallery is really better, completely different and awesome. And now you can access pictures with stock gallery from within camera miniatures.

Well... I'm a quite stubborn person so even with the other app working flawlessly, I did a deep search to find a way of getting my stock camera working, and that's what you said there is exactly what I did here. I've renamed the stock one to BlurCamera.apk.bak (just in case) and put the new files to the system directory with the needed permissions, and after the rebbot my gallery was working like a charm.
Thanks for the files anyway, even not using them I'm quite sure someone in the future may find it usefull when a problem like mine appear. And reading your post, people should get everything working with no issue!
Hail brother!
