I use that and no problem occurred.HTC cable have 2 side for connection and send or receive or power supply, but usb 2 mini have one side only.
can I use this cable without problem and damaging device?

Yes -- I've been doing that for years.

If the plug end physically fits, it will work fine. I've tried a couple mini USB cables that didn't fit, due to the way the HTC Ext-USB port is shaped straight on one side, like you mentioned.
CORRECTION: I think I just wasn't pushing the connector in hard enough. I have a couple mini-USB cables that came with various devices (a multi-card reader and a digital camera), and they take a little more effort to push the connector into the port on the phone. I didn't realize this at first, since I was afraid to damage the pins in the port. But they fit fine (just take a bit more effort than the OEM cable), and both transmit data and charge the phone properly.

I connect usb2 Cable and trasnfered data successfully.
but when I try to charge with usb 2 cable, device dont charge and only charge led be turn on.any body charge with usb cable?

Charging via USB is at a much lower rate. It can take 3-5 times longer to charge the phone that way.

I've only ever used the USB2 to transfer data/charge my phone since I had my Wing which was a good 3-4 years ago lol.

Hello everybody,
i have tried to use the mini usb with my TP2 and only works for charging.
when conect it to pc, it just start to charging, i have installed active sync but pc doest detect device,
Any advice?

Go to Settings>System>Power, and make sure the option is unchecked: "When phone is on, do not charge when connected to PC".

Ok, tank you redpoint73, i have unchecked this option.
i just ordered the original data cable, which is supposed to have 11 pins,
I dont see how a standard mini usb with 4 pins can do the job of the 11 pins

Any USB-mini cable should work for data transfer and charging. There should have been one included with your phone, and it should have come with a wall charger as well.
There are retractable cables you can use. I purchased several from here:
http://www.itrimming.com/pcabusbx0007.html
They are a little delicate though. If you're rough with it, the end of the cable closest to the plug will fray. The site also has some great universal USB car chargers.

If you had to install Active Sync I assume your on Windows XP. Make sure you have installed the htc drivers.

It doesn't do the same job, the extra pins are for composite video output, left, right and ground for audio, microphone, and possibly FM antenna. Four pins of the standard USB cable are all that is required for data transfer, even though it (USB) has five pins on the phone end.
You may have, as I did a failed USB interface. Check the phone on another computer to be sure it is not an issue with the computer and/or its software. All you have to do is verify the computer senses the phone, you don't need to sync them.

Two quick things...
I have one USB cable for a card reader that does not work for WMDC/disk mode, but charges the phone just fine. It works with the card reader OK, but no data on the phone basically. If you have problems with one cable, unless it is known to work on other WinMo/HTC devices, I'd definitely not always assume the phone is at fault until you've tried a different lead.
I've heard a lot of people say that charging via USB is a lot slower than via an AC mains charger. However, using SpoonCharge, the mA figures look the same for me on my phone - charging via mains charger never goes above "medium". This holds true with the original AC charger my UK (new, sealed and boxed) TP2 came with, as well as a TyTn II, Hurricane and Typhoon charger, and a non-HTC MP4 player charger - nothing goes above medium.

I have measured the current used to charge.
There are a few things.
1) Most PC USB ports are limited to 500ma., that is the standard. Try to pull more, and they usually do an auto shutdown or some form of limiting.
2) Any plain USB cable, or the factory HTC cable when on a PC port, leaves a charge rate pin floating. With that pin floating, the HTC device charges at a max of 500ma. Again, this is by design to not overload the PC port.
3) The factory charger, pulls one of the extra USB pins down. That tells the device that it can charge at up to 1000ma., twice as fast.
4) So, if you plug into an official charger versus a USB port, the charge rate is about double. BUT, you need to factor in the processor activity. If the PC USB is keeping the phone active, then the charge will take even longer.
I use my HTC on my motorcycle as a GPS. I have built a charger on the motorcycle and have used a switch in that 'fast charge' control line to lower the charge rate, or raise the charge rate. (long story, the phone and my regulator gets hot).
I have a pinout somewhere. A Google serach will find it.

Can i use a regular mini USB to update my G!?

Hi I lost my G1 cable and I wanted to know if I could use a regular mini USB to update my G1 without having issues?
Yes, you can.
Make sure the miniusb cable you are using has a ferrite core/bead on it. Some folks with poorly shielded computer innards have experienced data corruption on cables without ferrites. If your miniusb cable doesn't have one, look around the house for a computer cable with a core that you can remove.

You can remove those things? I thought they were attached to the wire. I've just been using random junky usb cables with no beads on 'em and I haven't had any problems. I just checked the cord that came with the G1 and that doesn't even have a bead on it.
yeah hes saying, some people, so more often than not you dont need one, its for people who like to be extra safe especially if they end up bricking the device from corrupted data.
one thing that i have heard is that adb will not work if you are using a regular cable, there are a few extra wires and connectors in the usb cable for the G1, it is also a different shape than that of a regular mini usb connector. but for daily use, or just moviing files you shouldn't have any problems
Err, I have several mini USB's, I usually randomly grab one when I work with my G1, I have never had a problem with using ABD or any other type of problem. Also, I'm 99% positive the stock USB cable is no different then any other cable.

Yes, The input is strange, The HTC Shadow is the exact same way. Do realize, the stock USB's "Head", the metal pin, is not the perfect match for the slot on the Dream, it's a basic mini USB. Although, The included stock headphone/ear piece's connector, does in fact fit the input in the exact manor.
I think it's just the "head shape" that is different. I hvn't had any problems with other USBs.
Yes, currently I am using a Blackberry USB cable, and ADB and all functions work properly. In the past, I've used the original G1 cable, one for a Canon digital camera and one for an HTC Vogue, ADB works for all of them. Most of all, USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.. so I assume they are all the same.

It's an ExtUSB port, which is a HTC variant of the mini usb plug that has additional pins for audio. However the usb data lines are physically and electrically identical to standard usb, so for all intents and purposes unless you are using a special ExtUSB headset, it is plain mini usb. The supplied cable is a standard mini usb, so any other mini usb cable will work. Do heed my earlier warning to use a cable with a ferrite though.
I have about 30 different mini usb cables sitting around the house and i have probably used all of them once to or twice well doing playing with my HTC devices
Actually, that ferrite theory might explain things for me... I am experiencing some strange behavior when I use cables without the ferrite bead - the G1 will act as it's charging, but I don't get the "mount" option, i.e. it doesn't detect that it's actually connected to my computer. This happens both when directly connected to the computer USB port, and via a USB hub. I'm pretty sure that when I use a cable with the ferrite bead it also detects the computer and I'm able to data mount it.
Also, when using a cable without the bead, I have noticed that although the G1 says it's charging, it either doesn't or it charges really, really slowly, cause I could check by pressing power or menu once that it says charging - 76%, then turn off the display, then check again like half an hour later and it's still at 76%.
So I would actually say yes: the USB cable matters big time.
But of course, this is all based on my personal experience.

i plugged up an old desktop to retrieve some stuff the other day and realized that it didn't have usb2.0 and would not let the phone stay mounted. so just a caution if thats an issue.

strange, that's a similar thing that happens when not using enough voltage (the battery issue). I have a homemade battery powered usb charger, but it's only 4.5v as opposed to 5v. This causes strange issues with my g1 and my girlfriends. do you have lots of things drawing power (LED lights, lit up SATA cables, tons of usb stuff etc) because that can cause instability with your computer and sometimes undervolting usb things.
Ferrite beads more have to do with interference which doesnt seem like issue. Although i'd certainly use a cable with a ferrite bead when flashing or issuing commands via adb, flashboot etc.

[Q] Flyer Micro-USB

The Expansys web site describes the Flyer as having a "standard micro-USB" connector.
The Flyer I have just unboxed and put on charge came with a micro-USB connector which was different even from the usual, half-squared off, HTC connector. This one has a cut-away at the top and (in a different axis) at the bottom.
I tried one of my older HTC USB connectors (Athena, Hero), but it resisted and I didn't want to force the issue, so the Flyer is charging on the connector it came with.
But is this for real? Have HTC changed the "standard" micro-USB for something propriety?

Yes and no. It is a proprietary connector but microUSB cables still fit in the device. I've charged from a PC already and it works fine, although its SUPER SLOW.

This is not a microUSB cable. It is a MiniUSB cable which is vastly different and does not fit in the flyer.

Not a one there has a cut-away.
Nice thing about standards... there are so many of them.
Also, tried Google/Images for "micro usb" and all the various mini and micro usb cables I have. Not one of them has this propitiatory shape.
Have you got a link to something authoritative?
PS: Cooks? What's wrong with cooks? Do you mean crooks?
That is why I said yes and no. It is a propriatary connector that also allows for connection with microUSB. If you are familar with HTC devices many of their winmo devices had miniUSB Ext connectors which were propriatary but allowed for a regular miniusb connector to connect to it. That was before the microUSB standard was made.

The micro-usb connector is the far left connector in your Wikidpedia link, the one you're holding / trying is the 3rd connector from the left which is a mini-usb.

The port/connector is desined to stop you using the mains charger with other devices as it would "fry" them! This is why you can use a micoUSB connector with the Flyer.
Are you suggesting that if I used a micro to mini converter that I could fry the Flyer?
My issue is that I have several (proper, branded) HTC car chargers which have mini-usb connectors - which I used for the X7500/Athena.
A converter would mean I don't have to replace these chargers.
But the voltages would be the same, wouldn't they? USB current/voltages don't change depending on the cable... do they?
Hi
To buy a charger wouldn't cost much, but I use my gf blackberry charger on my dhd I thought it was battery that drew the charge.....

The Flyer white mains adaptor is designed to stop you using it with another device. But you can use a standard micro usb with the Flyer port. I hope this is clear.

You can use normal chargers on the Flyer, it'll just be slower. That's why their power adapter is different and much more potent for faster charging. And as Jah says, if you were to use the Flyer's charger with a phone it would most likely fry it as the phone isn't designed to handle those power levels (ergo the different plug, making it impossible to connect the flyer's adapter to another, incompatible, device).
The flyer has 12pin micro usb not 5pin to be used for hdmi output same like the in the htc incredible and htc sensation
Meh...I've tried three different micro-USB cables including an HTC variant from my Mozart, and although they sort of fit, none seem to go in far enough to charge or sync. Weird.
.
Need to get this sorted ASAP.
The reason the Flyer has a 'Unique' micro-USB socket is that the charger is 1.5 AMPS. (And is a HDMI output)
This provides enough current for heavy use and charge at the same time.
Do not expect a standard micro-USB to charge your Flyer if you are using it, it will infact drain the battery!
A standard micro-USB cable will charge your Flyer if it is connected to a minimum 1Amp plug charger overnight and the Flyer is not in use.
Do not expect a Flyer to charge from a 500mA PCLaptop USB socket whilst you are using it!
Remember guys, this is much bigger than a mobile phone and even some of them would not correctly charge from a PC/Laptop USB.
Use your mains charger to charge it every night (or as much as possible) to keep it from going below 20%.
Do not expect it to charge from the sync cable (until we get 3rd party dual usb source cables as for some DVD writer drives).
THEN you will keep the life in your battery.
Soz for the bold font but wanted to get the message across.

I've tried 3 or 4 different Micro-USB sync cables or chargers, and every one works. They plug in "upside-down" from how the plug goes into most Micro-USB devices that I am familiar with. Meaning, the spring-loaded prongs/teeth on the male plug should be facing down (if your Flyer is on a table, screen up), and you insert the male end in the lower "half" of the Flyer's port. Both sync and charge work.
A generic micro-usb will power and charge the Flyer. I use my laptop while traveling to accomplish this. When its charging, I'm usually not using it... I'm asleep.

Don't feel bad. I was making the same mistake, and don't know if I would have even figured it out, if I hadn't come on here and read about it. I didn't want to force it, or do anything that might damage the port, so I don't know if I would have thought to turn it upside-down on my own.

TF101G: Charger cable broke -- need urgent alternative

Hello all,
I have the following problem: The USB connector side of the standard charger cable for my TF101G is damaged beyond repair. The wall wart is fine.
In my naivity I bought the standard USB adapter (namely this: http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T...INXQ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1336838294&sr=8-6 ) believing that a "standard" USB Type A male -- male cable to connect the adapter to the wall wart will do the trick.
After finding it doesn't I browsed (quickly...) this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1087321 . It seems that the adapter is using some different wiring...
I tried this with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (male - male) cable between the wall wart and the USB adapter to no avail.
Question is simple: Can I use the adapter I bought -- via some easy modding of the USB cables if needed -- to charge the tablet (and keyboard) ? Or I simply need to buy another charger ?
Thanks,
Florian
No, the pins used for charging is not in use on the adapter.
You can quite easily fix your cable though, if the 40-pin connector is still intact. Its just 4 (ok, 5 actually) wires.
If its only part of the cable thats broken, you can just cut the cable and then cut a USB3 cable and solder them together. red to red, black to black, white to white etc... the 2nd red wire is supposed to be attached to pin7 of the usb3 cable. I dont know the color of that though.
The wall wart outputs 15 VDC @ 1.2 Amps when the TF is detected. If not, it will output the standard USB 5 VDC @ 2.0 Amps. Any voltage less than 11 VDC will not show the tablet charging.
A USB port (5 VDC @ 0.5 Amps) will charge with the screen off at a rate of 3% per hour.
An iPad charger (5 VDC @ 2.0 Amps) will charge with the screen off at a rate of 10% per hour.
If you are looking for a charger, it will have to output between 12 and 16 VDC across pin 1 and 4 of a USB connector.
You can make your own, or try to find one. Dynex makes one, or you can check some stores. ASUS sells them online, as do some other vendors. Depending on where you are located some users may be able to help you find one.
There is plenty of info on the forum on DIY chargers and such. Here is one thread:
So you can only trickle charge without ASUS charger?
or you can just build your own pc usb charger (see link in my sig)
Thats my charger just went tits up aswell. 3 days of gtee left! Tried freezer but no joy. Looks like its outputing something by the indicator on the tf itself but % still drops, dock indicator light doesnt come on.

Sounds like mine... it refuses to send 15v anymore, it only sends 5v.
Im going to rip mine apart, when I get some free time, and see if bridging the connections will help kick it into 15v mode again.

Welll...Tbh I'm not so sure I want to take the knife to an USB 3.0 cable....
If you look at the attached pics of the (damaged) connector you'll see the Red & Orange cable (still) soldered to Pin 1, the Shielding was (seemingly) connected to Pin 4, while on the other side (the "top" of the connector -- see 2nd pic) i have the Yellow Wire... well, not sure where ...Shielding ? Also, unclear where this yellow wire goes..
Anyway. My "problem" is that
1) Bought the USB adapter in vein (stupid, $45 mistake). Anyway, lesson learned.
2) I still isn't clear to me on what wire has to go where on the USB 3.0 side and I don't really want to take risks in frying any part (the tablet or the wall wart...)
Thanks anyway. Still looking for alternatives / safe way to reconnect this...

Not to throw a wrench in the works here, but I have a cable that installs drivers and functions just fine when connected to computer, but will not charge from either of the two wall adapters I own. Another cable I have will work with both adapters.

I bought one of these 2m cables from ebay and they work fine, you may find cheaper but this one does work and its longer that the original which is a bonus.

Edit :- I also have a 3m USB3 cable which I can use as an extention to the existing cable (or the 2m one above) so I can sit quite a way from the plug socket without a problem.
Spot of luck.....Asus tf came in to my store to get sent back for repair. So my tf is now happily getting a charge from the borrowed adaptor until ups pick it up
My charger was picked up yesterday and is currently tracked to Germany. Just as a tip for anyone - rma your tf yourself! Don't take it to the retailer to do it......Asus are hopeless with the retailers and seem to think its OK just to string it along knowing the retailer will take the flack.

Speed up Android charging on PC Connect, boost from 500mA when data transfer active

As known, Android will limit the charging current as 500mA while a data transfer detected. Is there anyone know how to get rid of this limitation, so the charging speed could be boost even while the data transfer is active?
So, I'm starting an automation work, which need the Phone to be connected to the PC all the time. The problem faced here is that the phone will always out of juice after ~12hours operation.
I don't mind about the phone get too hot or the battery will have it's life shorten, I will think about that problem later.
I've tried to double the cable input like the one applied on External HDD Storage, with no positive result. Also, have tried to use USB2.0 and also USB3.0 port with the same result. The image below:

Afaik, the limitation come from device itself, whether it's from this OS or the hardware itself. Since I've tried to plug the VGA Monitor with USB powered input to the PC, and it could draw current for more than 1A. So, actually, there's a possibility to draw more than 500mA from PC's USB port. Back to the main question, could we break the 500mA limit in Smartphone (Android) even the data transfer is active at that time?
Looking forward the feedback from you guys. And thanks for your attention

I've faced a similar issue where I needed the phone (Nexus 5) to be connected for adb but maintain a charge. The cable in your picture is not designed to do what you're looking for unfortunately. You might want to look into getting a powered USB hub (USB 3.0). I use an OTG USB squid to power my device and connect a keyboard, mouse and flash drive.
My motherboard has software I installed called USB Boost which allows my phone to draw over 500mA when I'm connected to a USB 3 port, but it's probably limited to certain Asus motherboards. I noticed certain cables worked better than others. I used ampere to figure out which one worked best for me. You should try accessing your BIOS and look around for any USB settings. Feel free to reply with the make/model and I can do some research.

So, in short, @btux81, have you successfully throw current more than 500mA via USB while connected to ADB using that OTG USB Squid?
The OTG is something like this, right?
Are the statement below true, regarding the configuration?
1. One of the squid's tentacle connected to a PC, that will maintain the ADB connection
2. Another tentacle connected to a wall charger, which provide current more than 500mA for faster charging

So, do you means that USB port in the PC only able to give more than 500mA if the USB Boost was activated (from your exp, it's only in Asus motherboard)?
Fyi, my PC using Gigabyte motherboard, and it's able to draw more than even 1000mA when I connect Monitor LED AOC E1670Sw-USB Powered in my USB port. Whether I connect it in the USB 2 or USB 3 port, the current delivered can be more than 1A. So, I don't think that it's related to the PC itself, but must be around the Phone.
As an additional info, by using dual male USB cable mentioned before, I've connected one USB male to PC (hope for the data connection) and connect the another one to USB Charger 2A (hope for faster current input to the phone). But, only 500mA total delivered through the cable (around 250mA from each USB male).

S21 can't connect to PC via USB. Please help!!

A month ago I've updated my S21.
Since then, I'm unable to transfer data from my mobile to PC, AND can't connect my phone to Android Auto in my car multimedia
I tried different cables, ALL original ones but still same error:

Your phone's USB port might be broken or dirty.

So why I can still charge my phone like usual?
Does it make sense that I can charge my phone but can't connect it to my PC and transfer data?

Yes, because the USB connector has specific pins for data and power.
The old USB 2.0 and below used 4 pins, which were +5v, Data+, Data-, and Ground. USB-C uses 24 pins - 4 ground pins, 4 power pins, 12 data pins, etc.
A USB A to C cable has the GND pin on the A connector connected to all 4 of the GND pins on the C connector, and the VBUS pin on the A connector connected to all 4 of the VBUS pins on the C connector, but the two Data pins are only connected to the two USB 2.0 data pins (A6 and A7) on the C connector.
So, if the Data pins don't make good contact, but the VBUS and GND pins do, the phone will charge...albeit at the slow 5 volt rate. I assume when you plug it into the charger, it doesn't charge rapidly?
Make sure there isn't lint or dirt buildup in the USB port of your phone. Use a small thin plastic pick to gently scrape out any crud that might be in there around the connector. Don't use any harsh chemicals or solvents; you can use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to help clean if necessary.

I see, thank you for the deeper explanation.
Although, I found a bypass solution which I don't understand how it works:
I took a UGREEN hub that I bought from Aliexpress a few years ago, I plugged the Type C connector to my S21, I took a 128GB Flash Drive and connected it into the HUB and guess what? it worked! so I managed to backup files from my S21 to my USB Drive via the HUB I put between them.
I still don't understand how it worked and why it doesn't with a direct connection of my phone to my Laptop..
The cables are great and Samsung original ones.
Also, 1 of the 2 cables is new, I bought it a month ago.

Are you sure it isn't a problem with your computer? You said connecting your phone to your car doesn't work either, correct?

I'm sure because i can connect other devices to my computer :/
And yeah I cant connect my phone to my car via Android Auto anymore
And the whole issue started a few days after I updatedf my firmware...

Did you use the right firmware?
If you've already cleaned the USB port the only thing I could suggest at this point is doing a factory reset and flashing the firmware again, being careful to make sure it's the right one.
