I've recently tried watching a few videos on the vibrant and have noticed that none of them are displaying the subtitles. These are a menagerie of 480p and 720p mkv's. I have tried act video player trial, meridian, mvideo, stock video player and rockplayer but to no avail. I do have some mp4's that I converted from mkv and embedded the subtitles into the video and those work fine so I know that works but I'm really hoping I don't have to encode all these mkv's just for the subtitles. Any suggestions for video players with more comprehensive subtitle support?

Try RockPlayer. The website states that it can display .srt subtitles.

Did you actually read my post? Or just the title?
Like I said, newest version of arm7 rockplayer can't display the subtitles either.

As far as I know, none of the players support internal subtitle (aka mkv). Hopefully someone can come and prove me wrong. Otherwise, hopeful thinking: that Samsung would add subtitle support to the native video player via selectable menu would be awesome.
RockPlayer works for me. Double check the name of the .srt file and try multiple formats.
I've been using MKVextractGUI to rip the hardcoded subs out of anime mkv's. rename the ripped subs file to match the mkv you ripped it from and throw both into a directory on your phone. Search for mVideoPlayer on the Market. This video player plays mkv's with the subtitles file perfectly.

What kind of movie format have you played alongside appropriately named srt files? Do you have to activate them through options or close the srt file manually or just place our in the same folder as a same named mkv/mp4/divx?

Its a .avi format video and you don't have to do anything. Just place the .srt file and just copy and paste the name of the video to the .srt file to make sure everything matches. It should load automatically. It will say subtitle at the bottom of the video and then the subs will start. No need to enable anything or press any buttons.
Hmmm I guess I'll try ripping the subs out of the mkv's and using mvideoplayer then. Thanks for all the replies.

my apologies if this is wrong section, but i really don't know where to ask.
the stock video player is not very good. does not support many files.
i am sure it play 720p clips but not all file format. even some of my avi file also it cannot play. tells me unsupported file format. but its in avi and its a kelloggs advertisement.
since i am from windows mobile background we used to have a player called coreplayer which plays everything under the sun including file with rmvb and rm format.
is there a video player like that for samsung vibrant android ?
i use winamp for the android audio because the stock ones cant play some of my files properly.
if can, please recommend me a good video player to download from market.
thank you in advance.

Rockplayer and YXPlayer should be good places to start....
What is the best video player that works on atrix? I tried QQ and V Player and they both fail pretty hard. V player won't even open anything
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I ve only used one since I had the atrix and it plays all of my movies flawless that's "rockplayer lite" I don't know which is the best because it's the only one I tried but I will stick with it since it works.

Check out Vital Player.
arcMedia has worked very well for me, handles .avi files and doesn't afraid of anything..
edit: I tried to post a link but lurking has its disadvantages. Search "arcmedia" in the market and you should find it ezpz
I personally use doubletwist and that does music and video so that's what I use

I use mVideo Player. It works great with added feature of specifying your video folder, adding subtitles from the web and downloading Poster pics for your converted videos. Plays .m4v,mp4, or .mak formats which are the only ones I use.

This. I use the stock video player for everything (I just convert the videos...it takes 10 seconds) but if I use an app to download a youtube video that doesn't play natively VitalPlayer can do it.
I agree with Vital Player. Just grabbed it and it works great.

What do you use to convert the videos?
I use handbrake with the normal preset setting modified only for screensize.

Same as circuit, but you have to make sure to use FFMpeg since the Atrix doesn't play high-profile H.264. Plays perfectly though if you transcode in FFMPeg even up to 1080p and 5,000kbps or higher. Doesn't seem to phase it at all.
i use rockplayer and it works pretty solid. plays anything i downloaded from the internet.

No handbrake is not only for iphone, its for mpg4. So its perfect for transcoding to .mp4 or containers like *.mkv. I use it all the time and it works great if you make your own presets. Heck even the presets for iphone work great if you don't mind the scaling.
Do these converters retain sub titles? I wish we didn't have to convert anything. When I had the Galaxy Tab that thing played everything I threw at it with no conversions.

With handbrake you can hard sub or multi lang sub. But im not sure how well different players will work with muti lang subs. VLC needs to get a native android app with gpu and smp decoding asap!

I run Rock Player Lite. It plays .avi files flawlessly and that's the majority of my vids. Also the default Entertainment via hdmi works wonders.
MoboPlayer is the best
I have a bunch of video players each with its own set of features. MoboPlayer is excellent. It shows you video list screenshots, it reads off the external SD card, it plays all formats, it has onscreen controls, there are onscreen controls to size the screen, it is fast and colors are good. The only thing it does not do is play videos in the background. I believe Meridian Player does that.
Has anyone found an app or workaround to view hardcoded subs for MKV files or other video files?
If not, can someone post a link on how-to extract subtitle files from a video file into .SRT format?
correct me if i'm wrong but i thought hardcoded subs were placed directly onto the movie vs softcode that use an srt etc file? shouldn't they just be there?
Some video files have subs embedded that you can toggle on/off with no need for separate files, I guess he's talking about that?
You must mean softsubs as boondoc said. Try mVideoPlayer on the market if that does not work you can use mkvextract to export the sub file.

Sorry, I meant soft subs included in the same file. Not hardcoded, my mistake. I will give mvideoplayer a shot.

You can also try MX Video Player. Uses 2 cores on sw decoding and also having hw decoding.
I recommend Dice player also, for those couple of files MX Video Player can't play properly.
I found MX Video Player to be the better of the two recommended. HW decoding works great for high resolution 1280x720 MKV and XviD encoded video.
mVideoPlayer works ok for XviD and DivX, but the MKV file audio/video was choppy. I imagine the SW decoder is optimized as well.
Thanks to both of you guys for the suggestions!
Diceplayer support MKV subtitle without extraction + Full Video HW acceleration
+ DTS/Flac/AC-3 audio.
Hi,
I have nearly the same issue, but on an eeepad Transformer. I created a mkv file with the programm makeMKV. This programm creates one mkv file with everything inside (video, all audio tracks, all subtitles). If I play this file with vlc on the pc, I can choose between all audio tracks and all subtitles. But, if I play the file on my asus eeepad transformer with mx video (or with any other app, for example vPlayer) there's only the possibility to chose between the diffenrent audio tracks. Subtitles can't be chosen.
Has someone an idea?
Regards hootzter
So, I'm trying out various Android market apps on my rooted NT, trying to find a way to play .avi files. These videos easily on my Android phone: drag, drop, and play. But since the NT doesn't naively support .avi (and other common video extension) files, what can I do? Do I have to install codecs or something? Thanks.
Download MX player is the best out there, in the nook tablet works perfectly you can install the codecs for Arm7 only if it tells you to. It support many video formats including AVI by default.

Yeah, I tried that app, along with some of its codecs. No luck. If I take the time to convert files in Handbrake to .mp4, it'll work, but my old laptop takes forever.
Whenever (an it's not often) i get a file that doesn't work in MX Player.. then Mobo player usually does the job... with no extra codecs to install

Yeah, I also tried Mobo, didn't work.
I wonder what's wrong? It can't be the video files, as they play just fine on my Samsung GSII.
Yeah i think you are defiantly doing something wrong..
In MX player and Mobo Player make sure you're using the SW decode for playing the movies..
Apart from that maybe you need to provide a little more info so we can help you troubleshoot. The NT definitely plays AVI and it does it quite well so maybe there's just something a little screwed up in your system..
thnaks
it worked for me
I have tried BSPlayer, MX Player and they both stutter on really high quality videos. However, I have ES File Explorer installed and it comes with its own video player built in. I decided to give it a try and ran a 1440p video of a timescape, and it ran flawlessly whereas the other two video players could hardly run it. Also, streaming files over my WiFi performed flawlessly as well, with virtually zero lag from what I could tell and it barely needed to buffer either. I think everyone should give it a shot and post their results in this thread to see if it works nicely for everyone else as well!
It also played mkv files fine, but we still need a way to decode DTS audio nicely. Is it possible to sw decode audio and hw decode the video?

If you just browse to the place where the file is on your nexus through es file explorer and then click on it. It should work then. I just wish there was stock decoding for dts audio, because it works for mkv files fine.

The built-in ES File Explorer media player worked really good, but so did also MX Player with H/W-decoder.
Dice-player was locked to S/W decoding and stuttered.
And standard media player played it without hesitation.

It doesn't seem to play avi files. It simply didn't offer the option to play with its built-in player. It *did* open the m4v file however.
Played without a single hiccup everything stock here.

If you hold down on the video file and then click "Open As" and then "Video" it will give you the option to play .avi files.
For me it's all the same. Every player that does hw decoding does not play *completely* smooth. Tried MX, Google, ES.

Try this.
Extract the files from the Rar and copy them to your N10 internal storage. Then, in MX Player, Go to Settings -> Decoder, scroll all the way to the bottom, and tap Custom codec. Then, select the folder containing the codec files you copied over and tap OK. MX Player will then close, and after you restart it you should be in business.
Credit to Rootzwiki for that.
Not sure what the issue is on your end, but I ran that same 1440p Timescape video in the stock player from the Gallery and it works fine. No stutter, or lag even when skipping scenes.
I also tried MX and Dice player, no issues when them either. Stock N10 - 16GB.
