Since it does not seem possible to install the widget through the marketplace - testament of one user who played with the Fascinate in store - and many people won't know how to or will be afraid to root, can we get the Google Search widget APK file so people can install apps not from the market place? This way, users could install the widget and disable Bing.
Would that work as an alternative to rooting for the purpose of installing Google Search?
does this work?
http://www.google.com/mobile/android/
seems like going to m.google.com on the phone should work.

I found this guy also. It's smoked version, but should alleviate bing pain.
Anyone been able to find an APK of the original (non-smoked widget)? Would really be nice. What did people end up doing on the Backflip which has a similar problem being locked to Yahoo (which is now Bing ironically)??
Right now Bing is tied to the search widgets via the browsers. You can install the Google search widget, but you'll get reidrected to Bing because Verizon hooked the browser. If you install a new browser (Dolphin HD has been confirmed to work) and set it as your default browser, you should be able to install the Google search widget and get results from Google. (You may need to clear some settings to remove the default browser choice). The widget is already on the device, it can be installed from LauncherPro (use LauncherPro to add the widget, it will find it).

So could we "borrow" browser from one of the other variants' system dumps?
launcher pro does give you the widget. but your results will still come up as bing when you use it. and that interface sucks and the widget only shows up when using the launcher pro home screen.. it wont transfer to the regular screen
If you install this .apk you should get your default Google searches back (ie no more Bing redirect). I think you'll still have to add the widget via LauncherPro, but at least you won't get hijacked any longer.

Well whaddaya know, it works! You've De-Binged the fascinate!
Just 'cause I'm trying to learn more about this stuff, do you mind if I ask how yo found that?

Also, I can confirm, Launcher Pro is indeed needed to install the widget.
Well, not quite.. You still need LauncherPro to get the widget, and for a lot of people, it doesn't fix the voice search via long-hold of the soft search key.. (if you hold the magnifying glass button down). But it does get us a good deal of the way towards getting rid of bing.
That particular .apk was from a Captivate I think? I found it posted at the AC forums for another (but similar) issue.

Cool, thanks! I've got a sneaking suspicion that the true De-Binging will come from pushing a replacement browser app from another model SGS.
OK, voice search fixed (if you've got root). Rename /system/app/I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk to I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk.old
I have a captivate, do y'all want some apk's to try?

I just uninstalled Bing once my phone was rooted, seemed to have worked
I removed the Bing apps immediately along with one of the Search apks and I saw that when I pressed the search soft-key, it shows Google in the search box, but after executing a search it still uses bing.com to execute the search. For that reason, I agree with Zennmaster that de-Binging may come from another Browser.apk.
Did installing the Google search widget for you guys change the web page used for the soft-key search?

Use the apk I posted, your redirect will be gone. If you've already removed your bing.apk file, then your voice search should be fixed as well. Yes, soft-key included.

Can someone walk me through getting rid of Bing and moving over to google across the board. Rooted, but would rather now use a launcher if possible

I can't remember everything, but I definitely removed the app I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk, then installed the app posted above. You can remove the file using Titanium Backup or Root Explorer. You can also install the apk above using Root Explorer or any other type of file manager. ADB can also do these tasks as well, just not as fancy. There may have been another .apk I removed that was related to Bing, but I can't remember.

How did you get Google voice working? When I install it, I go through the setup process, and when I get to the section about setting up voicemail (which obviously won't work) I get an error.
I believe the choices on the error are "cancel" (which let's you try again, to no avail obviously) or "skip". When I press skip, it just dumps me back to the same page of the setup I'm on (voicemail), but both the back and forward buttons are greyed out...
Now, the funny thing is that Google Voice is now running! If I get a text, it pops up in the notification bar. But if I want to go into Google Voice manually and write a text, I can't because I can't get past the setup process...very annoying.
I also use Google Voice on a real phone (HTC Magic on t-Mobile) using the same Google account....would that make a difference?
someone did a mod to the voice .apk, I don't remember which forum I got it from. I will put it on my dropbox and post the link here in a few. The modified .apk allows you to skip the phone settings part where you got stuck.
update:
I didn't think I would find it this quick on my computer. I uninstalled google voice then reinstalled using this one and it works like a champ

Thanks, that worked perfectly! I wasn't able to uninstall the old version (said it was a system app, not uninstallable), so I installed the new one right on top of the old one, no trouble.
You can also just upgrade to the current Google Voice in the market. The skip button works fine in it.

sweet, then I'll pull my super secret dropbox version off.
I've installed the SlideIt keyboard, and it's working great. Love it! Thanks for the post on installing alternate keyboards. Thing is, though, I'd love to try the Speech Recognition function, but it's greyed out. After some searching, I figured I needed to install something like Google Voice. I did, but don't really understand what that's all about. My Nook's not a phone, so I don't care about voice messages. At the very least, I thought it would allow me to enable speech recognition in SlideIt, but that option's still greyed out.
Has anyone been able to do this? And can someone explain what Google Voice is for, on a Nook Tablet?
I've searched and searched, but I because of the horrible search function on this site, I can't search for "Google Voice" without getting a zillion results that have both "google" and "voice" SOMEWHERE in the thread.
Thanks,
Lori
Holy crap, this is awesome! I finally got it working. Didn't realize Google Voice and Google Voice Search were two different things. Hours later (see note above about crappy search features in forum), I have it working. VERY COOL!
Where did you find Google Voice Search. The Market says it's not compatible with my rooted NT.
Google voice is used for text messages and calls to all USA and Canada for free, while google search is just for search by using voice recognition its way 2 different things. Google search can be installed eather by market or by using any other sideloading ways, preferably in /system/app to work properly.

Veronica, what do you mean by installing it in /system/app? I copy the APKs somewhere, and then use ES Root Explorer to install it. It just installs. How do I control where it installs?

by default your apk's will install to data/app, i believe what veronica means is to move those installed apk's in data/app into system/app and make the corrections to permissions if needed.
i believe the permissions are chmod 644 (owner read and write, group and other read only).

No idea, sorry.
I just bought my Nook Tablet form BBuy. It's firmware 1.4.0 I installed some 3rd party apps (Aldiko, kindle, amazon store which work fine. However, I have issues with ADW and Launcher Pro, and I can only get some apps to run. I know that is a a common issue, but I would like to delete the apps that do not work and launchers, but I cannot find out how. I have no need for two launchers, so I'd like to delete Launcher pro -because it wont even launch- but I cannot figure out how to do it. Also gmail -which I read all over this site works- does not work, and I would like to delete it as well. It still pops sup in my searches so I know it's installed somewhere. My other issue is launching ADW. The only way I can get it to launch is when I power off the device and it auto launches into it on power up. If I search for any combination of ADW it does not come up in my lists. So if I exit ADW I have no way to get back into it. Any help would be great. I'm just about to throw this thing out a window and just get a Fire instead.
Okay so i'm a noob at the nook tablet myself but i'll try to give you some ideas..
The apps that don't run.. you don't say.. but i can tell you that honeycomb apps probably won't work so you'd need to make sure they are not for that version of android
This thread gives you great apps that work on the nook tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
you should definitely consider loading app Manager to have side loaded apps appear on the nook home screen.. and Button Saviour so you can get to the alternate home screen (launcher pro, go launcher whatever you use..)
There is great info in this forum. and honestly it took me a day of reading but now my nook rocks...
I've been using my nook for almost a week and i can tell you it's a great little tablet for the price.. i bought it after selling my ipad2 and wanted something to use whilst waiting for the ipad3.. i can tell you now.. i'll be keep this nook tablet as it is a great size for reading and covers all my surfing and movie watching needs.. the kindle fire is good but having also owned that for a couple of days before returning.. i can tell you the limited storage space and inferior screen put me off...
Lol. I had read thatbthread at least 4 times and never saw how to delete apps until now. Installed google framework and now my youtube app doesnt work, and gmail still doesnt work.
You need to install NTHiddensettings.apk in order to delete apps from the Nook.
As I mentiined, I figured out how to delete, but does anyone know where the apk.s download to so i can remove, after installing them?
Seriously? No one knows where the apks download to? Also, how in gods name do you get gmail to work side-loaded. All my other questions have been answered per linked thread.
/data/app
And did you root and install gapps? Without that, I don't think you're going to be able to use gmail.

No not rooted. People are claiming successful installation of gmail, google+, and other google services specific apps, but I get the "Unable to establish stable connection" every time I try to side load them.

Are you saying others have side loaded these apps without rooting? I don't think they work without the Google services framework, which you have to root to install.

here ya go
here ya go works just fine on mine, just can't sync with desktop cause of Amazon not having the google account thing /sh/mjkwzywnsfbpude/QgGJPmgod9/chrome.apk
Just add www . dropbox . com to the front of that
Interesting. i installed the chrome apk downloaded from apktop.com, and while it installed OK, it told me that it couldn't run due to missing crucial system features. Then it closed.
I have gmail and play store set up and configured, I'm not sure what it's complaining about.

i've not had that problem, but did you try to set up the sync option, because that'll force close since the google account framework thing isn't there thanks to amazon... without doing that it's still a better browser by far compared to silk lol
Thanks a lot for the apk.

thanks for the apk mate, been long looking for this one :highfive:
Any way to get onscreen tabs like the Nexus 7 or any other 10 inch tablet. I think it looks nicer and it makes it easier to switch tabs.
Remove Silk
Thanks for the APK - works great! With this now as my default browser (and nixxing Amazon Silk), I finally got my gPlay to work past the user agreement and stop crashing.
I went in and changed /system/app/HTMLViewer.apk to .bak then 'adb reboot' to nixx Amazon Silk.
Can someone repost that .apk? The link is broken and I'm desperate for better browsing.
Thanks

You can get both the Stable & Beta versions from these links, to get the .apk use the drop down arrow next to the "Install" button & select "to PC" to download the file

Hello,
I just ordered the Fire HD 6 and am super stoked to get it. I had a few questions if someone familiar with it could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.
1. Can I install a different launcher on the new OS or did they lock it down so you can't do that anymore? I'd love to put Nova on it just to make it feel more comfortable for me.
2. Can I install google music and allow it to stream from the cloud on the device? I've read some tutorials online, but they all seem to be older so I don't know if the new updated OS has blocked some of these.
3. Is it tough to side load apps as far as apps causing issues when doing so? I'd mainly be looking to side load Google Play Music, Chrome, and possibly a few other small apps.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I've searched all over the web for a site that has a forum for this particular tablet, and this seems to be the only valid one I could find.
Thank you
I can answer a few. When installing a launcher, it allows you to but when choosing set as default it never really gets set as default. It just keeps showing the choose launcher pop-up each time you press home.
Google Music works but you cannot log into your google account with it and streaming does not seem to work.
Sideloading apps is just as easy as any Android but many apps that use Google services will crash. Surprisingly Chrome does work on the hd6! At least Chrome beta. Did not try regular Chrome.

Thank you for your help, exactly what I was wanting to know.
I sideloaded Tasker and was able to set Themer to open up on unlock. It helps with not being able to set it as default.
Themer also lets you set wallpapers and custom icons. It's kinda buggy, but it gets the job done. Have Power Toggles in the Notifications to make up with not having the menu.
