Speech Recognition in SlideIt? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I've installed the SlideIt keyboard, and it's working great. Love it! Thanks for the post on installing alternate keyboards. Thing is, though, I'd love to try the Speech Recognition function, but it's greyed out. After some searching, I figured I needed to install something like Google Voice. I did, but don't really understand what that's all about. My Nook's not a phone, so I don't care about voice messages. At the very least, I thought it would allow me to enable speech recognition in SlideIt, but that option's still greyed out.
Has anyone been able to do this? And can someone explain what Google Voice is for, on a Nook Tablet?
I've searched and searched, but I because of the horrible search function on this site, I can't search for "Google Voice" without getting a zillion results that have both "google" and "voice" SOMEWHERE in the thread.
Thanks,
Lori

Holy crap, this is awesome! I finally got it working. Didn't realize Google Voice and Google Voice Search were two different things. Hours later (see note above about crappy search features in forum), I have it working. VERY COOL!

Where did you find Google Voice Search. The Market says it's not compatible with my rooted NT.

Google voice is used for text messages and calls to all USA and Canada for free, while google search is just for search by using voice recognition its way 2 different things. Google search can be installed eather by market or by using any other sideloading ways, preferably in /system/app to work properly.

Veronica, what do you mean by installing it in /system/app? I copy the APKs somewhere, and then use ES Root Explorer to install it. It just installs. How do I control where it installs?

by default your apk's will install to data/app, i believe what veronica means is to move those installed apk's in data/app into system/app and make the corrections to permissions if needed.
i believe the permissions are chmod 644 (owner read and write, group and other read only).

Google Search widget APK?

Since it does not seem possible to install the widget through the marketplace - testament of one user who played with the Fascinate in store - and many people won't know how to or will be afraid to root, can we get the Google Search widget APK file so people can install apps not from the market place? This way, users could install the widget and disable Bing.
Would that work as an alternative to rooting for the purpose of installing Google Search?
does this work?
http://www.google.com/mobile/android/
seems like going to m.google.com on the phone should work.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...oked-google-search-widget-v1-1-0-48668-a.html
I found this guy also. It's smoked version, but should alleviate bing pain.
Anyone been able to find an APK of the original (non-smoked widget)? Would really be nice. What did people end up doing on the Backflip which has a similar problem being locked to Yahoo (which is now Bing ironically)??
Right now Bing is tied to the search widgets via the browsers. You can install the Google search widget, but you'll get reidrected to Bing because Verizon hooked the browser. If you install a new browser (Dolphin HD has been confirmed to work) and set it as your default browser, you should be able to install the Google search widget and get results from Google. (You may need to clear some settings to remove the default browser choice). The widget is already on the device, it can be installed from LauncherPro (use LauncherPro to add the widget, it will find it).

So could we "borrow" browser from one of the other variants' system dumps?
launcher pro does give you the widget. but your results will still come up as bing when you use it. and that interface sucks and the widget only shows up when using the launcher pro home screen.. it wont transfer to the regular screen
If you install this .apk you should get your default Google searches back (ie no more Bing redirect). I think you'll still have to add the widget via LauncherPro, but at least you won't get hijacked any longer.

Also, I can confirm, Launcher Pro is indeed needed to install the widget.
Well, not quite.. You still need LauncherPro to get the widget, and for a lot of people, it doesn't fix the voice search via long-hold of the soft search key.. (if you hold the magnifying glass button down). But it does get us a good deal of the way towards getting rid of bing.
That particular .apk was from a Captivate I think? I found it posted at the AC forums for another (but similar) issue.

Cool, thanks! I've got a sneaking suspicion that the true De-Binging will come from pushing a replacement browser app from another model SGS.
OK, voice search fixed (if you've got root). Rename /system/app/I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk to I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk.old

I just uninstalled Bing once my phone was rooted, seemed to have worked
I removed the Bing apps immediately along with one of the Search apks and I saw that when I pressed the search soft-key, it shows Google in the search box, but after executing a search it still uses bing.com to execute the search. For that reason, I agree with Zennmaster that de-Binging may come from another Browser.apk.
Did installing the Google search widget for you guys change the web page used for the soft-key search?

Use the apk I posted, your redirect will be gone. If you've already removed your bing.apk file, then your voice search should be fixed as well. Yes, soft-key included.

I can't remember everything, but I definitely removed the app I500_BingSearchAndroid_07152010.apk, then installed the app posted above. You can remove the file using Titanium Backup or Root Explorer. You can also install the apk above using Root Explorer or any other type of file manager. ADB can also do these tasks as well, just not as fancy. There may have been another .apk I removed that was related to Bing, but I can't remember.

How did you get Google voice working? When I install it, I go through the setup process, and when I get to the section about setting up voicemail (which obviously won't work) I get an error.
I believe the choices on the error are "cancel" (which let's you try again, to no avail obviously) or "skip". When I press skip, it just dumps me back to the same page of the setup I'm on (voicemail), but both the back and forward buttons are greyed out...
Now, the funny thing is that Google Voice is now running! If I get a text, it pops up in the notification bar. But if I want to go into Google Voice manually and write a text, I can't because I can't get past the setup process...very annoying.
I also use Google Voice on a real phone (HTC Magic on t-Mobile) using the same Google account....would that make a difference?
someone did a mod to the voice .apk, I don't remember which forum I got it from. I will put it on my dropbox and post the link here in a few. The modified .apk allows you to skip the phone settings part where you got stuck.

You can also just upgrade to the current Google Voice in the market. The skip button works fine in it.

Compatibility with Android Market apps

I recently rooted my NT by this method. It's working great and I love it, but the Android Market shows a lot of apps as incompatible (for example, Pocket Frogs, Facebook for Android, etc).
Does anyone know a way to bypass these restrictions. I think it may have something to do with pixel density requirements?
I know you can get the apps with an android phone, and transfer them over. However, I do not have a phone. If there is another way, I would be interested in it too.
Have you tried using AppBrain to get Market apps to the NT?
I have an Android phone, so I haven't looked into this.
Write access?
I found this thread which discusses changing the pixel density to 160, but I don't know how to get write access to the /system/ folder.
Can anyone walk an inexperienced android user through the following steps:
1. Gaining write access to the /system/ folder (specifically the build.prop file)
2. Clear market data
Thank you.
EDIT: I figured out how to clear market data and cache, but still only have read access...
You need to be rooted and use a tool like Root Explorer to navigate to and open the file in r/w mode.
I changed my dpi settings to 160 and it did very little in the way of making more apps show up in the market. I've found that buying apps on another device and sideloading the apk to my NT works best with many otherwise incompatible apps.

Thanks. As I mentioned in the OP, I am rooted. I was using ES File Explorer, but it only had read access (is there a way to change this?).
Unfortunately I do not have any other android device to download with, and I would want to be able to update the apps without constantly sideloading.
Thanks for the reply.

Yes, as mentioned in various places in this thread. I have access to the android market on the device as well.
You must grand the file explorer root permissions.
For ES File Explorer: open, press options -> settings, scroll down to "Root settings" and check the box for "Root Explorer".
Maybe you should also change your Home Directory to "/" for easier navigation

Keep in mind, I've found that once you sideload an app, it then becomes available for updates on the Market the same as any other.
It seems the compatibility check only happens initially. Once you sideload, it's as though the market sees an app as: "Well, it's running on your device, so here's the update..."
There's a caveat: it's still possible that running an update will break a previous version that runs on the NT. I think that happened for some with the Facebook app update.
So far, I've had the market update several otherwise incompatible apps that I sideloaded with no ill effects.

Sorry. Just skimmed over the post. Download Root Explorer from the market. Navigate to the system folder. You'll notice a R/O gray box at the top of the folder. Click it. It because R/W. You can now change files.
Also, Facebook can be found in the NT Apps thread under "must have apps." You can also find a lot of apps here in the Android Apps forum. Once you install it, the Android Market will offer updates for it.
I usually google any apps I can't find on the market. You'd be surprised how many apps people store in sites like megaupload.

What about apps that you have to pay for? If I want to get an app that costs money, I have no problem paying for it. However, if I can't sideload it (because I have no android phone), and I get it off of megaupload or something, will it tie it to my google account?
Can I get the app from another site but have it linked to my google account?

There is a distinct possibility that I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can do that.
Additionally, if you side load a paid app acquired in this fashion, you won't be able to install any updates to it that might be available in the market.

Again, I have no issue with paying for it. But if google's market doesn't allow me to get it, even though I know it will work on the NT (see Angry Birds, even though that is actually a free app), how am I supposed to get it? There are loads of apps that cost money I would like to get.
Google needs to have a box that you can check after the warning that comes up saying it isn't compatible, and you acknowledge it and want to buy it anyways.

[Q] how to fool an application

is it possible to make an application think it is installed from market?
does market app (now play store) keep record of applications installed from market but not directly from an apk or other sources? can that list be manipulated?
No it checks your google account to see if you made the purchase before. All that is done securely. The market will see it as purchased sometimes, but when trying to download google recognizes that you havent really purchased and gives an error. I sort of kno why you asked and you can google how to get what you want. No talk of that here though !

To get google translate's voice input to work on the Kindle Fire HD without rooting you need to have the Google Voice Search sideloaded. I looked up " Google Voice_Search_2.1.4.apk " which is the latest as of this writing and eventually found a working one to download. I had already installed the Google services framework on my Kindle, so I am not sure if that is necessary to have first, but I wanted to let everyone know about my success in getting Google translate to work fully.
For those you who might have found this post through a websearch and are new to this all and have no idea how to 'sideload,' below is a copy and paste of a post I made on Amazon, hopefully that is ok to do on this site.
If you want something that will work offline with downloadable dictionaries, then the Google Translate app is your best bet, however if you have a Kindle you will need to 'sideload' this, which is what I did (on my Kindle Fire HD) and highly recommend because it is a truly amazing app that allows you to not only type in words or sentences, but also to handwrite things, or even take a picture of text to translate! It also has a feature that I just figured out how to make work with the Kindle which allows you to speak outloud and then translates it outloud so you can have a real conversation with someone in a different language (it translates what they say too).
To get the truly amazing Google Translate app you will need to search for it as an "apk" file and download that through your kindle's web browser, which means you will need the free "ES File Explorer," which you can download through the Amazon app store. Once you have done this, make sure your kindle is ready by pulling down the option/system tray (where the time and battery is displayed) and hitting the "more" option. Then go down to and hit "device." Once there, hit the "on" for 'allow installation of applications from unknown sources.' You can always come back to this later to turn it off again if you want to.
Now that you have done these, you can do a web search for the the Google translate app apk (the one I found that was most current as of this writing was called " Google Translate-173-V2.6.apk "), and in order to get the voice input working correctly, you will also need to install "Google Voice Search" apk and the most current at this writing is " Voice_Search_2.1.4.apk " and once you have found and downloaded both of these from a source you trust (both should be free), open up the ES File Explorer and go to the 'downloads' folder. The google translate apk and voice search apk files should be here, and you can now select them to be opened and download them to your kindle. Once these have been loaded, you should have a working google translate app that should recognize voice input. If it dousnĀ“t, you may need to find and install a google services framework apk. I already had the framework apk installed before I discovered (through trail and error) how to make the voice input work with the google voice search.
Hope this helps!
