There is no need for jailbreaking a hero. Just follow the guides available to root it. If you can't follow a guide to root, use univeral androot, although you'll still need to understand what you're doing.
There isn't a one-click root, and it's not really in the spirit of xda. Read about custom ROMs, read about rooting, and get flashing...

From what I can see, the source for the Nexus should work, as it uses the same USB implementation, see here: https://spreadsheets.google.com/lv?key=tarAC83Wjsq2QZvP4iR5mlw&toomany=true#gid=0
Info here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65246&page=6
I think it just needs compiling against a particular kernel against the Hero.

yup someone needs to do that for us asap

I had not seen Pulser missing a beat before

Well, it seems that we need a kernel 2.6.3x to make this work (check in psfreedom.com), since the bundled 2.6.2x uses the MSM_HSUSB driver instead of the MSM72K.
Does anyone know where to grab a kernel like that?

Sorry for sounding stupid, but what is this? lol

There's no such kernel right now. Devs are working on a .34 kernel, but I believe it's still far from complete.

its basically like rooting a ps3 means you can play 'backed up' games and such

i have tried bringing this up on the villain irc channel but all i got was abuse lol so gave up, and this is not the first time so no more donation to them guys from me and no more using there roms.

But, as someone suggested, could it be used as a recovery image with the compiled PSFreedom module?

cant we just port the img made for desire to hero ??

No, we can't, because what we need, the kernel, cannot be ported that way. What devs are trying right now is to port HTC Magic (Sapphire) .34 kernel.

Im so confused!
whats up with this spreadsheet, stating a Hero port is complete?
apperently i can't post links yet. But anyone know what im talkning about?

i read before, but what is the point?
I saw the answer, and yes it makes sense (i know alot about the ps3/psp scene since psp's release). But it doesnt strictly do anything unique at all on android phones does it?
I mean rooting does exactly the same, and the psjailbreak has no different/new features designed for android (i know it shouldnt, but...).
However, it is certainly nice to see a new kind of exploit available. (i remember the wonder of the gta exploit on psp all those years ago caused cries of delight and dark_alex to become a god, those who remember)

there is too type of htc hero some have the correct usb type some dont

I guess the best solution will be to port the exploit to the 2.6.2x kernel (seems more feasible than waiting to have a working 2.6.3x kernel).

Its updated!
hxxp://psfreedom.com/wiki/index.php?title=Device_compatibility_list
Now requires: 2.6.29 or higher Kernel

We should ask rom makers to help us out
On other note is someone trying to make it work for HTC hero

oh... okay then i'll won't do it..
anyone else got suggestions/tips?
since the X10 has quite different hardware from the Hero, it will undoubtedly be a *lot* of work, hardly worth it..
pleeeaseee do it, ive been waiting for someone to tryy...
it wont hurt, as he said, it shouldnt brick it.
of course i want todo it, but i don't want to brick my device
it wont brick the device as its only firmware not bootloader that gets affected. It most likely will hang and not boot and will requrie a wipe/install afterwards tho. Would love to try the x10 firmware!
ok, well i'll make a port, just simple as explained in the tutorial, and then i ask a romcooker to look at if it's safe, ok?
rightnow i'm dlling the decrypted version of the rom, and i will try to edit it, with some hero stuff, and send it to a romcooker before i will flash it..
first i downloaded the decrypted rom

not trying to be rude here, but if you need to ask these questions you'll probably fail at porting the rom... no offense intended. you cannot brick your device by just flashing the rom, for bricking you need to f* up the radio or the spl.
Sorry but im just a beginner and i wanted to try something, and i wanted to be sure i wouldn't brick my phone or unroot it..
When im home ill try to port it.

good luck with that, just be warned that the guide you linked is in now way a guide for porting. what it says about porting is the part everyone could have come up with. it totally skips modules, drivers and libraries. i wouldn't really know where to start either, and i have quite some knowledge about android by now.
don't let this stop you from experimenting! just be prepared to fail a few (or a lot of) times before you succeed.
btw, i'd love to see the x10 rom on the hero
Hello.
Even if you can port it, I doubt it'll run smooth on Hero, the hardware must be pretty gay for that rom.
Why u try to flash a complete ROM?
Only Mediascape and Timescape App is needed !
hf
because the whole rom of the X10 is just great!
when i'm home im starting the port, and i will upload the rom, when it's just booting on my hero..
and ye, i'm not really good at driver-coding and stuff.. so i think i need some pretty damn much good help from some proandroid-developers

we already can overclock the hero to 710 MHz.
I think that will make a pretty performance improvement

It's depending on your CPU, for exemple on mine I have to set it to 650Mhz for it to be stable, and over 670 it's crashing
And I guess overclock + X10 rom would mean a HUGE battery drain.
hmm.... yea you got a point..
well if i succeed we will see ;D
hmm i unpacked everything, but i can't seem to unpack the .sin files :S
i already tryed to change the extension to .zip/.rar and tryed to open it with notepad, but it doesn't seem to work :S

I don't know the answer about OTA updates after rooting, but to be honest, I'd be surprised if another OTA update ever happens for the Hero.

Oh ok n also I was readi thru my phone n it shows that what he's doin is instalin a costum rom n wouldn't do erase everythin on my phone?
Yes, installing a custom ROM would erase everything on your phone (although he also instructs you on how to do a nandroid backup of your previous setup). However, if all you want to do is root the phone you can do that without having to do any of the other stuff. Just download, install, and run Universal Androot as instructed in that thread, and you should have root without doing any other changes to the phone or your data.
Unfortunately rooting the T-Mobile G2 Touch isn't as simple as rooting a standard Hero GSM, T-Mobile made it quite difficult. I would suggest following this thread or using this tool
And if you don't install a custom rom or a rooted stock rom, your recovery will be overwritten, and you'll lose root on the first reboot.
The unrooted stock rom overwrites the recovery when rebooted.
Correct me if I'm wrong

Good point, I think you right in which case you will need to install a rooted stock ROM at the very least, which would mean wiping all your data
Sorry, I didn't know the G2 required a different rooting method.
Anyways, on my standard unlocked Hero I did not loose root when rebooting on the stock ROM, although as you said it did overwrite my recovery. I do not know if this is the case on the G2.

T-Mobile did some pretty nasty stuff security-wise compared to the standard GSM Hero so rooting is a bit different. As for what happens on reboot I can't comment, but I would recommend using a custom ROM anyway, something like [email protected]'s MCR is great for someone who just wants it working like stock but with better performance. You should be able to add something like FlyKernel to it for the overclock.

sucessful tmobile G2 temp root using VISIONary r14 this morning!
I tried ROOT on my new tmobile G2 (GSM) I bought last week. I tried Universal Androot AND z4root and neither worked to get even temp root.
This morning, I used VISIONary r14 and sucessfully gained su root and disabled a few of the branding and blotware apps on MY phone! I still haven't been able to uninstall them completely, but at least they aren't starting automatically on boot. Here's the link that worked:
android.modaco.com/content/software/320350/19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
these branded apps are WAY annoying! I'm not good with outfits like facebook and twitter having access to all my personal info and data, including fine GPS location!! and I can hardly believe tmobile imbedded these apps as they did. I'm still within my 14-day trial and may still return the phone because of this unless I can be sure I can get these apps OFF my back!

Possible Permenant Root without unlocking bootloader [NEED TESTERS]

hi guys i have recently posted the following:
DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit
it basically uses the zergRush expolit (thanks to Revolutionary team) to get temp root and then pushes files to get permanent root...
its reported to be working on a LOT of devices:

anyone here who has stock unrooted device and is willing to test this?
please test out and let me know asap

No offense dude, please don't be that harsh on the guy. He doesn't have his flyer yet to test.
To OP: I can't test either, im sorry, i've already revolutionaried+honeycombd.
That's not harsh it's just to the point. I already explained why it wouldn't work. If it was that simple any of the previous temp-roots would have given the same result, that is why there are no HTC phones on the working list of devices.
If this was possible on the HTC devices we would probably have released it as a standalone revolutionary release.
DooMLoRD I went back to GB to test something else so decided to run this anyway, since it wasn't really any extra effort and as I said before it doesn't work, reboot and it's gone.

[Q] Why no CyanogenMod?

I ran CM7 nightlies on my DInc2 and updated to the stable version the day it came out. Technically, I am a noob so I really don't know what I am doing, I just know what I like and I can follow directions. (Except for Matt's ICS update when I forgot to protect the root and had to start over with .181, doh!)
Why is it that CyanogenMod is unavailable for one of the hottest phones on the market? Is it because of the locked boot loader? (which I will have to look up cause I don't even know what the heck a boot loader is anyway)
It's not über important, I just really miss my CM7 and was wondering if anyone knew the answer.
Locked bootloader= no custom kernals also there is cm9 but not cm7 nobody wants cm7 anymore ....
Sent from my Spectrum....Verizon's most underrated phone
You don't need custom kernels to have official CM.
That being said, our devs are hard at work on making a fully functional CM ROM - thing is though, since we have to work around the kernel that our devices are working using a process called "2nd-init", since we have locked bootloaders, everything is taking a lot longer and is a lot harder.
We have a partially working CM9 ROM over at http://droidhive.com. We also have AOKP.
Would you recommend a partially working version for noob who really loves CM?

1. I think only Moto can unlock the bootloader, cause someone else told me it's an hard work because of 3 layers of encrypted code (I don't know what it means!)...it requires a lot of time and a powerfull machine
2. see n°1, Eternity project team are working on a bypass for bootloader (kexec)

Wait a moment...kexec is not necessary for CM9 flashing...you can flash modded rom, yet.
kexec (or unlocked bootloader) is required for mod kernels!
I am on icsleak, means i cannot flash costum rom as long as devs are not developing roms for my existing kernel right?
So i need to have kexec to bypass the kernel flashing to flash a costum rom...

First phrase. Yes, I think so, if you can't downgrade to GB, as I guess
Second hrare. I don't know if kexec gives you this opportunity. You have always to flash a compatible kernel with a custom rom, its or others. This is my guess, someone else can confirm or not?

to install a custom kernel via the same zip as the rom(like we do in samsung) is not possible as they have a security flag that doesnt allow this(its something called S-ON).
also if your device is locked to a network/region the device cannot flash any other regions rom(a little thing called CID).:good:
the stock rom/maybe any other roms /system partition is not writable(there is a module to break this).:good:
More info :
about CID and S-ON the solutions for them are rightly called SUPERCID and S-OFF.:silly:
supercid change the cid value to some constants list like 1111111 or 222222 or 333333(thus making you truly unlocked and able to flash any regions rom).:victory:
S-OFF switches off the s-on security flag and thus allows for the kernel(boot)(and maybe more) partition to be overwritten(i.e r/w).:victory:
there is a method of S-OFF called facepalm that may/should work for all mordern HTC devices(yes that includes desire x:good but needs to be ported (or someone preferably a developer should offer to be a guinea pig for jcase or beansup like jmztaylor was for htc one vx).
for facepalm to work supercid is needed(how to get it same as above i.e needs to be ported or someone preferably a developer should offer to be a guinea pig for jcase or beansup like jmztaylor was for htc one vx):good:
so you are all caught up with the htc awesome(and some ass) ness let the building begin :highfive:

yes in HTC u get it like this.
Bootloader ----(always stays there...... very tough to mess it up)
Recovery -----(Has a separate partition on HTC unlike samsung/sony, where it is part of the kernel)
OS -----(System/data/cache etc etc)
Bootloader/Fastboot lets you flash things(images) onto RECOVERY/SYSTEM/BOOT/DATA partitions.
Dont confuse bootloader with boot.img.
Boot.img is the image which gets flashed onto the boot partition. boot.img contains the kernel and ramdisk.
Recovery.img also contains the kernel and its own ramdisk, so in either case, if u cant boot ur rom, u can always boot to recovery.
Thats it.

your post is correct. But he is interesting in porting cm9/10 and S-ON or S-OFF doesnt matter for that. In either case, there is a way to flash custom rom/kernel etc.... so what we need right now is a device/vendor tree for it.

Wow wow!! HTC is super cautious unlike samsung who let us do anything on phone.
I will study more about all this and get my phone unlocked by some friend.
The only thing that worries me is its dev support. People are dead here.. :silly:

Only some people have HTC Desire X but there are some great people here like ckpv5, MaartenXDA, The Android Manual then nexusPrime and atis112 who made 2 kernels.

Download Mode on Samsung is pretty similar to our bootloader/fastboot because they have similar functions like USB connection to flash recovery or kernels.

Nice info. I was looking for this. I red anywhere that after unlocking bootloader and installing fastboot/recovery, user should lock bootloader again. Is this correct? Why it is important?

No. And you don't install fastboot on your phone. It's there already.
Flowed from my HTC branded muffin...
