I installed RyanZa's One Click Lag Fix app, rooted the phone, installed EX2 Tools, then ran the lag fix. I'm not having any problems with my phone, but I just want to learn and be prepared when the Froyo OTA updates start happening.
I figure the safe thing to do before applying the Froyo update would be to undo the lag fix and unroot. Is this true?
Anyone have experience undoing OCLF? After this, is the phone just like it was out of the box assuming no custom ROMS were ever flashed?
1 - undo lag fix
2 - unroot
3 - remove EXT2 tools (what is this anyway?)
I was able to get the answers to my own questions, so here they are just in case this is helpful to anyone else.
There's no need to unroot because it will get replaced by the update. Same thing for EXT2 tools, but it wouldn't necessarily hurt to be safe in either case. Lag fix has to be undone though, because there's a pretty good chance you could lose data if you don't.
Note: EXT2 tools are basically utilities used by the Lag Fix to make sure it works the way it should.

Hey there, since yesterday I'm a proud owner of this nice phone with android and as I'm crazy about tweaking and stuff I want to get the best out of my phone.
Question 1.
What can I achieve by getting Android 2.1 on my phone?
Question 2.
Is it possible to make a decent backup/flash backup of the branded stuff that comes with my phone? If yes how could I achieve this?
Question 3.
If it's possible to safely backup (to be able to keep waranty intact somewhat) can I get the upgrade for 2.1 NOW? Because I still don't have it (slow ass T-Mobile doing it by serial number or something)
Question 4.
Rooting, is it a good idea? What can I achieve with rooting my device (I know it gives me root access but what can I do further if I have root access?)
Question 5.
If I ever brick my device, is it still possible to get the original firmware on it?
Those are my questions for now :0 Hope you people can help!

Question 1.
What can I achieve by getting Android 2.1 on my phone?
Better performance, A little better theme than 1.6, better touch response, better battery life, access to Android 2.x only apps, somewhat improved bluetooth, live wallpaper and few more..
Question 2.
Is it possible to make a decent backup/flash backup of the branded stuff that comes with my phone? If yes how could I achieve this?
Root your phone and use titanium backup..
Question 3.
If it's possible to safely backup (to be able to keep waranty intact somewhat) can I get the upgrade for 2.1 NOW? Because I still don't have it (slow ass T-Mobile doing it by serial number or something)
You can back up normal data (and also apps from market in android 2.1) like contacts, messages, settings etc through Se back and restore utility.
For backing up system apps, or upgrading to 2.1 out of turn, you need to root your phone, that will theoretically void your warranty.
Question 4.
Rooting, is it a good idea? What can I achieve with rooting my device (I know it gives me root access but what can I do further if I have root access?)
Wonderful idea, only if you are familiar with system tweaking and somewhat familiar with linux. And you are willing to take risks.
for example -
a) You can simply install some very useful root only apps like titanium backup, root explorer, app2sd etc to manage your phone contents.
risk associated: very low to moderate
b) you can even change basic framework and theme of your phone, remove bloatware that comes with phone and use terminal emulator to have (almost) full fledged linux console. etc
risk associated: Moderate to High
c) When it comes out, you can even get custom roms on your phone
risk associated: Very high to Fatal
Question 5.
If I ever brick my device, is it still possible to get the original firmware on it?
Depends on how bad the phone is messed up, at the end all depends on your knowledge of using the right methods and right tools.
If you can get the phone to recognized by SEUS/PC Companian/Flash tool you can (hopefully) repair/reflash it with firmware.
Hope it helps..
Yeah it helps, I'm not afraid to toy with my new phone and I do have linux experience. The only thing I want to be sure of is if I can reset everything in case of a brick or something if I ever need to send the phone back to Sony
So if I use the sony ericsson updater my phone gets fully restored to their stuff? (Well not if I edit my serial-number to get 2.1 quickly so theoraticly they can always find out I fiddled with it I guess.
So what I'm actually planning to do is:
1. Have a backup ready for the thing above
2. Get Android 2.1
3. Root Android 2.1
4. Remove safe to remove Bloatware
5. Get a custom theme going. As I'm seeing so far the HTC Theme was ported somewhat? I definiatly want a good homescreen. How 1.6 is now sucks.
6. Have a method of EASILY organizing all my applications I'm going to install after doing the above.
7. Install apps
8. Customize to taste.
So to get 2.1 now I would need to edit that serial which I can do if I get rooted first which probably requires Exploid because SuperOneClick was 2.0+?
Rooting 2.1 is SuperOneClick thingy.
Removing safe stuff with Titanium Backup.
Get that theme and start tweaking.
Finding good homescreen/launcher tools.
Get my apps again (Appbrain ftw)

Yeah, you can use generic product code, or generic build.prop you can even find generic FW with flashtool on this forum.
PS: for 1.6 rooting Exploid works wonders..
I'm currently on a rooted stock 2.1...06.
i can't seem to find the Google Maps in the market.
my maps' version is at 4.4, but it says on appbrain that the latest is 5.3.1 for all android versions...
http://www.appbrain.com/app/google-maps/com.google.android.apps.maps
how can i update this?
i already tried searching for it, but found nothing.
also could not find gtalk and gmail...
any ideas?
try different os
Hey,
you can use different os like froyo final by owian or gingerbread 13, as your phone is already rooted. Try froyo u will really enjoy it, as i did ;-)
I just updated to the new 2.3.26 firmware and have lost my Archangel temp root. I'm sure the app will be updated soon but this has got me thinking about a permanent root option.
My main question is, what exactly do the different root options offer. I have seen this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978492 but I am still confused about the capabilities of the different methods.
Archangel:
-applies root apps to be run
-rooting only occurs AFTER the device is turned on, so no custom roms
chulri's Method (does this have another name?):
-must install SDE first
-gives root access permanently
-does this allow custom roms?
Urukdroid:
-must install SDE first
-allows custom roms (ext4, overclock, etc.)
Does that information seem right? Is Urukdroid the only custom rom at the moment? Does chulri's method allow custom roms?
Also, does installing the SDE mean I'm pretty much screwed in the case of a hardware defect/issue? Or do they only void software based problems?
Lastly, do chulri/Urukdroid work on the A32? My real concern is the fake SD card Archos used in order to get Android SD compatibility.
I know there is a lot of questions, but I'm having a bit of trouble sorting out exactly what does what. I am comfortable with Linux and have been using Archangel to play around with root on my A32. Thanks!
Edit: Ideally I'd like to have something with the stock Archos firmware (at least in appearance/regular use), permanent root capability, and some speed-ups (overclock with or without setCPU, ext4, etc.). Is this currently possible?
It's possible with Chulri's method. But again with the SDE. I believe it's the only way you will get permanent root. You need it to overwrite the img file. I've been using Chulri's method with my Archos 70 since I got it. I've also got Archangel on a Archos 32 and it works fine, but like you said not perm.
I've also used Urukdroid...ran into issues. But I haven't used it since it came into version 1.0, I've been content with Chulris method. I will use it after I get done reading the book I am in the middle of on my Archos.
Edit: So far except for Uruk there isn't much for custom roms. Someone is working on an Ubuntu version. Thats about all there is out there for now.
Without custom roms, what benefits are available with a true permanent root that Archangel doesn't already offer?
Also, what sorts of speed ups can i expect with urukdroid's ext4 and OC kernel?
There are more apps you can run, like the backup using titanium root with root. I suppose you could run Archangel every time you want to backup or whatever you need to do. I know there are more things I just can't think of them right now. For instance, I use Archangel on my sons Archos 43, because all he uses it for is to listen to mp3's and watch some videos sometimes. And he doesn't use it real often.
I use Chulris method on my Archos 70 because I like to back everything up and I like a little more control on what apps I use. Apps like Cache cleaner, Root Explorer, Terminal Emulator, and Titanium Backup all use root. I will admit I use root more on my phone than I do on my Archos.
Also you can overclock. AS far as using the overclocking, I don't have mine overclocked. So I can't speak for what kind of changes you see, but it will vary. I don't know why it varies, but it does. (besides the obvious factors of apps running etc)
Ext4 is faster than ext3.
I Have a few questions. first off. How do I know if I have voodoo. When I first got the phone and I was installing CWM and freezing bloat and all that, I swear I put voodoo on this. I even heard the robotic lady when I was doing it.
Right now I am still stuck on di01 and really want to get updated. To me, this has become too much work for what its worth. I kinda want to just go back to stock, have root and launcher pro and freeze the bloatware and just rely on Verizon for updates. I have tried for a few WEEKS now to update my phone on here and I always get stuck and run out of time. My life is too busy right now to be doing this.
So i guess my options are, first of all need to get voodoo disabled before I do anything, but I was told since I have a disappearing CWM(I installed it, but I cant get into it when I hold volume/pwer) that I should just get an "all in one package" from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048380
Then my second option is to just return to stock. Really all i care about is getting rid of touchwiz, getting rid of bloat, and having full control over my phone. By going back to stock, just having root and launcherpro, wouldnt this be accomplished? then when ever I want to update I just update through verizon and go get root again, right?
Maybe someone might want to list the pro's and cons of both options for me? thank you!
......bump
If you want to disable voodoo,
"Create a file or folder named “disable lagfix” in a a directory named “Voodoo” in your internal SD card.
Reboot"
More detailed information can be found here:
http://project-voodoo.org/documentation
Honestly, if the launcher is the only part of the "touchwiz experience" that you really notice as being annoying and you don't mind having a lot of bing on your phone, then the way you mentioned in your initial post is the way for you to go. If you want to be more thorough in getting rid of Touchwiz and changing the overall experience of the phone, then check out the roms here:

Hm. My phone is de-binged right now. i forgot about that. that would also be something that I would like to remove.
I am just not seeing all the hype for the roms compared to stock with root. all I care about is that things run smoothly and I control everything. Maybe I missing something though
I suggest u backup data with mybackup root, then flash di01 package using Odin, then update officially and restore data
Voodoo can be disabled by what the previous post said or by cwm
Also, if freezed the bloatware updates don't work. And to check voodoo, just run quadrant standard app and if score is 1500-2000 then u have voodoo, below 1000 then u don't
thanks for the clear instructions
Look, I know that some of these questions may have been already answered , but others probably not. I'm not a lazy one... I've looked up on the internet already but some of them are kinda too specific.
I've never rooted a phone or a tablet before and this is my first android device.
I know that rooting can be dangerous, but i wanted to use the transformer prime to take handwritten notes using adonit jot stylus. As far as I know, in order to be able to properly write with it, you need to use this app: touchscreentune
Unfortunedly, the app requires root access. Note that I tried by myself to write with the adonit in my transformer and the results were not good.
So it looks like I need to root, but i dont need any custom roms, etc..Just the minimum enought to get that app working. I heard that there is a few clicks tool to do this easily.
I'm not experienced when it comes to mobile devices. On the other hand, i'm a computer science/engineering student and i'm at least "experienced" in what comes to computers .
So you know my problem and you know my background as a computer/tablet user. Now help me, please:
1. In a scale from 1 to 100, how risky do you think it is rooting for me?
2. If I root my tablet it voids warranty. If i unroot it, is there any traces left? i.e Will i be able to use the warranty after a root-unroot? (What do think is the probability of loosing warranty after root and unroot?)
3. Does the tool (viperMOD ?) work with the most recent android and firmware versions (I think yes, but just to make sure)
4.Do you think my reasons to root are legit and do you advice me to root?
5.Can you point me an updated tutorial (I've seen many tutorials but I don't know if they are updated) on rooting the prime?
6.If i change the touch screen setting and then unroot, will it keep the settings?
I know that they are a lot of questions, so if you only know the answer to some of them, please reply... I will appreciate it a lot.
Well, thanks, and btw hi xda developers forum and sorry for my english.
And I want root my prime! But I'm noob and I'm afraid to do this. I need root prime for CPU Clock to 1.6ghz and i need root for apps! Help
1. 1.... not a big deal...root it.
2. Probably will if you send it in with it rooted. You can unroot with Viper.
3. viper works with all of them.
4. I advice you to root, theres plenty of apps that require it and you'll feel cool.
5. Use vipermod. best easy root there is. (if you installed asussync, make sure you kill it on your comp)
6. probably not as it asks everytime you unlock screen for permission
Why root:
1. Change bootanimation
2. you'll be ready when roms and kernels are released
3. you'll be able to install a recovery, so you'll have more control of your device, so if anything EVER happens you can make a backup and restore it
4. You can overlock to 1.5ghz or 1.6ghz (stock is 1.3ghz)
5. Very coop apps like Ram Manager or Task Control need root
6. You can install Ubuntu/Backtrack and actually use Ubuntu (currently only chroot)
7. You can install mods like change the icons ect. (not adviseable until we get a recovery)
8. If you ever wanted to sell your prime, the fact that its rooted (or hacked) it would be more valuable)
9. so many more...
10. so many more more
BTW, if you want to return it, and you want to unroot it, you can. Just make sure every unroot it the SuperApp is not there. If it still is, theres plenty of tutorials to do it. you'll need adb though. (learn adb, simple commands to control your phone from the pc)
you can always just wait till roms come out. you'll be more enticed to do it then.
With the viper unroot the superuser app remains there?
I have slastop instaled in my computer. Ill make sure it isnt open when i root.
Im not interested in roms. But being able to run ubuntu would be cool. But it would be much better if it was native.
One thing im wondering is if the tablet has a hardware problem and i cant turn it on, then i wouldnt be able to unroot, would i?
ive never tried it but it should remain there.
not splashtop im talking about the AsusSync.
Im sure native will be available once the unlocker tool is released...any second.... (announced by february)
chances are nothing will happen like that, unless you start to edit stuff
hasnt happened to me, and i know it has to someone that edit their build.prop
Has anybody tried using browser2ram after the update? I managed to update and restore root and i'm going to reinstall it. I was just curious whether anyone else has tried and can confirm that it still works and improves the stock browser's performance.
Seems to babe working just fine.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk 2
After testing it does appear that browsing is still much snappier with browser2ram installed. Which is a shame really as it means that they really didn't address the io speed although jelly bean has improved things.

what browser have you tested this theory with?
Stock browser running better and smoother here - even than ICS with browser2ram. But that's after a factory reset - I had glitches before I did that.
Not sure how you guys have managed to restore root in order to install the app again. Do share! Nobody else seems to have managed more than "partial root" in other words only works with apps already given root permissions before update. Are you definitely seeing browser2ram being granted permissions after a reboot?
Stock browser. As far as I know the mod was only designed to work with stock.

I restored full root using the following method in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32122432
I get the browser2ram being granted permissions message after I installed it and rebooted. From what I've read it varies a lot as to whether full root can be restored. It must be dependent on a combination of your current setup and what you did to restore. I guess I was just lucky.

Good to hear some have managed it. I know many (including me) reported Rootkeeper had restored root after update only to find it hadn't fully worked even though apps like Titanium Backup and Root Explorer seemed ok. Anyway my stock browser zips along nicely now and I'm sure it won't be too long before the devs figure out a way to root again .

like somebody else said above. If you are seeing lag with your stock browser running this new rom you should do a factory reset.

Yes, it made a big difference for me and I'm sure it would for everyone. Even after a few months we accumulate a mountain of dross on that data partition that has the potential to seriously mess with any new software base. I know companies are always reluctant to issue software updates that would force users to back up or lose stuff but it really would save a lot of problems if they just warned people and did a full wipe.
HTC even refused in the end to issue the ICS update for the Desire HD because it would have entailed wiping the data partition to run the upgrade .
