getting "data wipe fail" after installing stock rom via odin - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive flashed back to the stock rom many many times after playing with roms here and wanting to go back. Almost every time before I did I would use a zip through clockwork that wipes everything and I did this time too but for some reason after odin installs the stock firmware successfully the phone reboots as usual then goes through its checks and it always fails to wipe data. So my biggest issue is the phone is unusuable until I can do this because it boots to the tmobile screen and then the screen goes black but the phone is on as the capacative keys at the bottom still light up when touched. Any help on this would be great but its looking like Im going to have to get another one.

Are you sure you didn't get this after you installed the Voodoo lag fix??? You will have to read through this, but it looks like there's a fix in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=781456
Got to page three and read from there.

You are correct. I finally narrowed it down because I had done several updates through clockwork today but that was it. I am reading through forums to see about a fix, good thing I have other phones to play with too.

i got the same thing. did you figure it out?

I hope someone answered you.
It messed up because I flashed the Vibrant Voodo Lag-fix w/OC-Optimized 2.6.29 Kernel - Beta4 9/19/2010
To disable, simply place a new folder in the "Voodoo" folder on your SDcard (the internal one) name it "disable lagfix" (e.g /sdcard/Voodoo/disable lagfix") no extention just that exact name and reboot. After your phone boots and you check that your /data partition is again RFS you can re-apply any other kernel you were using.
now redo the stock kernel and stock rom via odin and you should be fine.

yea im having same issue, how do you put the folder in if the phone doesn't show anything, just a black screen?!

I have same problem
How can i add the folder if the screen is black?
please help
thanks

JI6 installed automatically... my phone is stuck at the Vibrant boot screen

Phone is rooted and I believe Ive got a lag fix installed.
No idea what I need to do - did a quick looksie through the JI6 thread and I didnt see anything in particular about the update ****ign up anyones phone.
EDIT: The update is called JI6 right? Whatever I got automatically from tmobile is what messed it up.
I'm having the same problem. I'm thinking its because I had the lag fix before this.
If you have the voodoo lagfix then you may have to use odin to fix things. See the instructions on the first post of the thread for Simbionix for that.
With other lagfixes you may just be able to wipe the phone. Can you still access recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I can access recovery. I really didnt want to lose things like contacts saved on my phone even though I dont give a piss about anything else. I dont think the contacts copied into SIM so I may be screwed on that.
If you had your Gmail synced, all the contacts should be on your gmail account, and it will not be wiped

Your contacts should be saved on your google account unless you disabled that.

Sweet. I dont use Google regularly so I didnt even think about the contacts syncing to it.
What is my next step? What should I do? The ODIN thing?
It's a google phone, but u denied to use google service frequently, then you deserve the punishment
Just kidding. I think Odin is the only solution here. And don't forget to use google service after getting your phone back from death =D

Just flash the ji6 kernel . Should boot right up

Hi,
The same thing happened to me.
I pushed bionix 1.6 to sdcard with adb.
Then flashed it with clockwork.
I am up again.
What a tmobile nighmare.
to disable vodoo lagfix
A quick and easy way to disable voodoo lagfix, is to just create a file or a folder inside of the voodoo folder called "disable lagfix". Worked for me, hopefully this helps.
same thing happened to me. The update was waiting for me when i woke up, so i hit the damn button without thinking about it (i had one eye open!!).. now i have a nice "vibrant" screen.. oi. Simply wiping the phone does nothing, so Im going to try the 2.2 to 2.1 fix.. here goes nuthin..
Same thing here. I had a lag fix (not the voodoo one) and a GPS fix. Not sure which solution to go with. I'll wait for some more replies with simple and easy fixes to appear.
EDIT: I was able to reboot holding power and volume buttons and got it to ClockWork recovery. I guess my next step at this menu would be to "install zip from sdcard" but how would I go about getting the Bionix_6_stock.zip file onto my SD card?
you'll be fine
take out battery and hold power up/down buttonswithe buttons pressed insert battery. you should see Vibrant logo once continue to hold once it goes blank then let go of all exept down button you should be in stock recovery now if you had clockwork recovery press reinstall packages you should now by in clockwork recovery if so flash again or flash some thing else hopefully a nandroid back up... good luck but you problem does not seem that serious keep at you'll be fine

Do you have adb setup? If so, put the bionix ROM in the tools folder of your SDK & type:
adb push *file directory/file name* /sdcard
GL, please update.

Hmmm I think I remember about this other way to boot up where you can push stuff to the phone. How do I do that again? I have only been able to get to the Clockwork Recovery screen and need to get the Bionix zip file from my PC to the Vibrant using ADB which yes I have and it did work a while ago. I just forgot how to boot in that mode. Thanks!
I'm stuck as well. One small difference. I DO NOT have a lag fix installed. I uninstalled the One Click Lag Fix yesterday in preparation for the update.
Well, let me rephrase. The App is installed on the phone but the fix is not applied.
Any thoughts?
Side note. My screen has some how gotten scratched recently and I'm curious if this is a possible way to get a new screen (and phone) from Tmobile. The phone is rooted and I have a GPS fix applied but that's it.
EDIT: I wanted to add, while booting, the Vibrant screen obviously comes up but after a few seconds, the TMobile jingle STARTS to play. It quickly goes quiet and then continues to sit at the Vibrant screen.
Long time lurker, first time posting.
Stuck as well, I am rooted but stock otherwise. Only items installed are:
Vibrant-JI2-GPS.zip
signed-mobileap.vibrant.zip
Any help is appreciated
EDIT:Was able to push Bionix 1.6 through ADB and Flash with Clockwork Recovery. Back Up and Going!

I'm sort of in the same boat. Rooted, but haven't installed any of the lag fixes or gps fixes. I don't have clockwork installed. Is there any way for me to download the OTA to my SD card and try flashing it that way?
This sucks
FYI. I had the same problems as the original OP, getting stuck at the boot screen after the update, due to having lag fix enabled. I finally got the true stock 2.1 firmware installed via ODIN. I've called T-Mobile requesting they push the update again and was told to do the following to send a message to google to have them push the update to my phone. It's been 30 minutes and nothing yet but I'm crossing my fingers. For the guys who haven't received the OTA update yet give this a shot.
Dial *#*#2432546#*#*6
One you complete the sequence all the numbers and characters should disappear leaving your dialer blank. Then you just sit and wait for the message to update your firmware. Hope this works!

Help Urgent - No applauncher (touchwiz) on start, black screen.

hi guys, I accidentally posted this in general, but here it is in SGS2 forum.. I really need someone's help.
I nearly had a heart attack think I bricked the phone.... long story short
I froze TouchWiz in Titanium Backup thinking it would just use vanilla, but it's just a black screen. I couldn't find a way to get to market/settings so I a flashed it on Odin to Ke4 again but it looks like it just flashes and doesn't wipe the settings.
Anyways - So im stuck at a black screen, I have the status bar up top, i can swipe it down but thats it.
How would I;
'format'/flash the firmware so its completely new ...? I just need an applauncher or a way to get to settings?
or How can I make my way to settings?
my preferred option is the format a clean whole new one
if anyone can help me because I got to get this sorted asap before work lol
Just need it to work.
Thank you so much anyone that can help.
There are probably better ways but you can try to install a home replacement via the web market. This should push it to your phone and after installing pressing home should give you the option to select another launcher.
Do you know any methods at all? I'm willing to try any, I just cant find anything that shows how to completely wipe and start new..
I downloaded Go Launch and chose to have it launch to my Phone but it didn't work from the phones end.. the phone has no wifi/3g connection.. it has the no connection icon so probably won't it wont push.
Thanks for the suggestion though, I would have never thought of that.
Looks like you may need the download recovery jig tool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
jje
I'm a bit confused about the jig option
I would have thought I could have flashed/restored it to stock
I am able to actually load the phone, I can swipe down and enable usb debugging mode, I just literally have no way to get to market & settings if possible...
=S
Yeh sorry jigs are running short you dont kneed one if you can access download mode .
jje
Yeah, thats a relief.
What would my options, What can I do to get my phone working again..given the above..
Okay!
So I loaded Villains Rom 1.0 and everything works again, thank god.
My question now is, can I upgrade/flash now to KE4 with this one?

cool, thanks mate,
I'm just lost for words now...
When I put on villain rom, was happy to backup all my msgs asap and etc to gmail which I did, that's the most important thing so i'm glad.
So then I wanted to defrost some apps I had frozen ... so I installed titanium again .. as soon as I did that the same problem came again, black screened. I reboot and it's now stuck at the 'S' loading animation.. it wont start into the applauncher... I actually reloaded the rom but still same problem.
- i can actually do a screen capture at the animation screen....so im guesing everything else is ok
I just want this to work one more time so I can do a factory settings wipe and hopefully all this sorted..
anyone able to help, i'm so sorry for asking so many times.

OK. What you need to do is...
1) Reboot into recovery image (volume UP, home, power) and wipe /data. You're gonna lose everything stored, but I'm sure we can get over that
2) See if it now boots (it should). If not, reboot into recovery again and wipe /data, then turn off
3) Put phone into bootloader, and get the ROM you want to ODIN. You can use VR1 if you want to just flash systemfs (safer). Flash it as PDA, then it should boot.
Failing that, you can recover it "my way". Flash Chainfire's insecured kernel (from the root thread), then get it to start booting. keep running "adb shell" (you do have adb set up?), and once it works run "rm -r /data", then type "reboot". That will wipe /data, and hopefully let it boot.
Don't panic too much btw, it shouldn't be too serious.

[Q] Rooted I717, constant reboots, no recovery, flashing stock ROM not working

I changed from an iPhone 4 in May to the Samsung Note. On my iPhone I would immediately jailbreak and install MyWi. In my research to do the same on the note I ran across a rooting tutorial for my device and followed the instructions http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-att-i717-root-without-increasing-flash-counter-61325/ (I am not positive, but I feel confident this is the one I followed). I installed Superuser and Titanium Backup, did a backup of ATT connection manager, then removed it. Tethering worked like a charm. This has worked and I had no issues until Friday June 14th.
On Friday, everytime I opened an app on my phone I would get a Force Close. I restarted the phone and watched as it repeatedly happened after every cycle. Believing that installing Droid VNC Server was the issue, the last app I had installed, I removed it successfully and included others I didn’t use. Upon reboot, I noticed the notification of App Updates and a missed call. Checked the application list and noticed that all of the apps I had just removed were still there. I have a ton of pics and videos and thought that I should back them up immediately before I deleted them, prepared for the worst. I was able to do that. I deleted them all, nothing in the gallery. When the phone crapped out again and rebooted, all apps and all pictures back.
I formatted the USB Storage, seemed to delete nothing and also showed the same amount of used space as before.
Time for a restore. I know now that the recovery partition is gone and so a Wipe/reset is fruitless. No problem. I know how to flash the rom. I used this method with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Everything seemed to work successfully, but upon reboot I get the same app updates notification and the same missed call notification. The same frozen state my phone was in when the issue started on Friday. WTH!
I have everything backed up. How do I get back to stock? I could care less about the counter. I just want my phone to be usable again.

did you try wiping Catche and Dav?
Wipe Catch > Wife Davlik > Fix Permision, then reboot ..
see what happens ..
Not a noob, but here is where i am lost
I booted in to recovery, chose to Wipe/Erase . I see no option to Wipe Davlik except for in SuperUser and there it is a paid option, not sure where to find Fix Permission and then reboot?
I am assuming these are all options for CWM. I attempted to put CWM on an SD card last night and install from ZIP, but Recovery does not seem to see the SD card.
Are these options that are available for CWM, if so I will push through until I get it to work, but I have had no luck to this point.

I have attempted to Flash ROMs I don't desire just to move forward. They all flash and pass in Odin but on reboot I still have my default screen. Unfortunately, I want to go back to stock. I have done plenty of research and need something more to push on to the next thing. I am looking at phone and there is not an Advanced option in recovery. I have read there are options in CWM but I am looking at what I believe is the stock recovery options.

You now have a custom recovery(according to Odin). The problem is, you're doing the wrong key combo as stated above. You can also go to the market and grab FJ's power tool. You can boot into recovery directly from the app. Good luck.

Still having issues. Here is the deal.
I have the phone in Download mode

I load the CWM Recovery in the PDA box. Start the flash, get a pass. All looks good to me.

I immediately attempt to access CWM Recovery by holding the power, vol+ and vol- and still get the default recovery
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d176blydonlvrlu/2012-06-19 20.13.42.jpg
I am so confused as to what I am doing wrong.
Unfortunately those pics aren't loading for me. Try again with the pic of recovery and the file you're flashing. Thanks. If you still have stock recovery then maybe that's what you're flashing in error.
Try volume up + down and power button. When phone vibrates, release power button but keep holding volume buttons until you are in cwm.
I would use Odin to flash cwm touch recovery from pda, then load a rom via cwm. Using that method you don't even need to root because it's all done at bootloader level and root is built in to the custom rom you flash

[Q] Need Serious Help Troubleshooting a Problem

Anybody that thinks they are one of the best if not the TOP troubleshooting helper around, Please let me know if you are available after 5 today. I dont have a lock screen anymore and when I hold the power button down, the device shuts off instead of having the options to reboot, power down, screen shot, whatever else available. I am rooted, but I did try going back to stock and had no luck with the lock screen. Also, I cound a backup on a different MicroSD card and tried to restore that. It worked fine, but never gave me the lock screen or power down options again. Weather you want to talk on the phone, chat, or email. Please reply here or email me at [email protected] Thank You!
Sorry but we don't have a ranking system here. You get what you get . . .
The power off menu is in the framework of the OS. Have you flashed anything with CWM/TWRP that could have changed the framework? Almost any mod could be a possible cause.
Did you use a theme-setting app? These apps change the framework and that includes the lock screen too.
Have you restored a backup recently?
Post your rom version and apps you installed recently.

I'm sorry you felt the need to take what i said the way you did. I was simply stating what i said the way i did because nobody could ever help me with this. I am currently rooted on stock ics. I didn't even have a lock screen after i flashed back to stock on Odin, then used kies to get the latest ics. It doesn't make sense. Do Tippy have any idea how i could put this back to normal? It's a pain having to rely on go locker and go launcher. Also, when i hold the power button down, the phone just shuts down, with no options like normal. It's crazy. I appreciate your help either way. It won't let me flash a different ROM right now. Gives some error. I just want to be fully stock with a lock screen and power menu options them go from there.

Well yeah but what does that have to do with anything? It doesn't help at all. That doesn't fix any of my problems. This problem is much more complex. The issue is that my phone is not as it normally should be..with options after holding down the power button, and with no lock screen...even after successfully going back to stock, these things were missing...

Since you can't go back to stock,
Flash a rom, it should install those missing things.
Or mess it up worse and take it back for a new one.

It won't let me flash another ROM. Gives me Assn error and doesn't go through. If i try returning the device with the flash counter where it's at, won't that be an issue? I can't go without the device. I use it for too much. Maybe i could figure out how to reset flash counter? Idk..i just need this fixed bad
This maybe a dumb thought but can you use kies and install the original ICS again? I know you mentioned backups didn't work so reinstalling original ICS probably won't worj either. Just a thought.

I thought I already mentioned this but I already tried that. It does not work. It sucks man. Nothing seems to work. I wonder if there is somebody who could walk me through the troubleshooting of the whole system or soemthing. I know if I try to contact AT&T about it they will laugh at me and not be able to help me. If anybody knows the ins and outs of the framework or anybody could even show me where to look and what needs to be there that isnt..even terminal emulator...anything...I appreciate everybody trying to help me so far but nothing has helped yet Thank you though and thank you to anybody who from here on out tries to help me. I know I will tell you again too.

Are you going back to stock ICS or gingerbread? I would Odin back to gingerbread and start brand new. This will solve any major issue for sure. But only do it if you have the things you need to get back to where you are, like the GB root, cwm or twrp, and your roms. Let me know if that helps

I can let you know up front this did not work. I did this in the beginning. Went back to stock GB then had to use Kies to get to ICS. This did not help my issue/problem at all. Still no lock screen. It sucks. I am almost lost for help here it seems. Is there any way to completely reset the device from the beginning? Or again, any way to get help with everything in the actual framework of the whole device? Anything anybody could do to help me with would be amazing. Thank you for everything again!
Try this, not sureb if it fits your issue 100%.

Idk but I did warranty claim with one of my notes and Samsung didn't say anything about the flash counter after. But they also sent me the new phone first then I sent mine back, but like I said they didn't say anything after.
but now that I think about it, the lock screen is not a device issue. it comes different in every ROM in the framework res.apk! I don't see how that's even possible? The entire frameworks flash and the device can't on its own decide not to install that especially not on stock GB. For you to Odin back to GB and not have a lock screen on GB is just crazy. Nothing out there I'm aware of can do that and not brick the device. You have to bring that device back foreal. That's screwed and if you do fix that pm me and tell me how!

Will do. You see why it's crazy now!? It's ridiculous! Never heard of or seen this problem ever..I'm not new to Android or Android troubleshooting atall. Just this blows my mind!
There is no warranty issue here.
I asked several questions about what you have done, but you didn't inform us.
You never said what recovery you have. The simplest solution is to reboot into recovery, wipe all caches, factory reset, then flash a stock rom.
If you can't do that I would use Odin to flash a stock rom.
Those are your options.

I have tried to answer every single question to the best of my ability. Sorry I did not answer your question properly. I was on CWM recovery but Just now again I flashed back to STOCK using Odin. Meaning I have stock recovery. I still DO NOT HAVE a lock screen or any options when shutting the phone down. Those "options" you gave me are no longer available. I did all that. I am about to try to go to a friends house to flash to ICS using Kies...which still will give me no lock screen or options when holding down the power button. There is obviously a deeper problem here. I hope somebody could help me solve this issue. Please I am begging here It is horrible!

This is what I just did. Also, I have been looking at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218 wondering if I should try this next. Either way, I am not getting a lock screen or options when I hold down the power button. Please help Anybody!
Why isn't flashing a stock rom using Odin not an option? Odin is the pc software Samsung created and uses for their work.
Kies didn't work -- try Odin3 1.85

Again, I feel like a broken record by repeating this SEVERAL times but Flashing Back To Stock Using ODIN Does Not Work! I just said that I did this in my post before last. I finally have managed to get cm10 nightly to flash on my device. When I flashed this, it gave me the lock screen back along with options when I hold down the power button. Thank you all for your help anyways. I guess this is as good as it will get.
When you flash a rom with Odin, it reformats your phone, like a clean slate, then installs the new system.
When you say you flashed back to stock, did you use a .pit file, a .tar file, and a .bin file? If not, you are not flashing back to stock -- you're just adding up a mess in your phone.
If you use Kies, then use the emergency firmware recovery, it will supposedly do the same thing as a correct Odin flash -- reformat then install a clean stock rom.

Rooted S2 months ago, acting up now and won't boot (regular and recovery mode).

Preface: I have zero knowledge of android development and rooted my phone myself.
Some months ago I decided to root my S2 i777.
I followed the instructions on this page word for word: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
I decided to do it after my stock was getting laggy and was randomly shutting down and throwing the battery calibration off. After reading the good feedback in that page's comment section. I gave it a go.
Everything went fine and my now-rooted S2 was no longer randomly shutting down!
I noticed though that the caera and video playback stopped aorking. As in, the screen would be black. I could still take pictures, but I would knot know what it looked like until it was taken. That didn't bother me much though since not having the phone shut down random;y several times throughout the day anymore was more than worth that unfortunate loss.
Today, though. It started randomly cutting to black and boothing constantly. My battery calibration was all over the place. It has restarted at least 10 times today.
I talked to my friend that originally conviced me to root and he said to do a factory reset. I backed up my contacts on my SIM and did so.
Now it won't boot past the screen that reads "Samsung Galaxy SII GT-1900" with the yellow warning triangle underneath (this is wha tthe boot screen changed to after rooting.).
I can not boot into recovery mode via keeping all three side buttons pressed.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I do not know how to do that
Click the return to stock thread in this guys signature . Creepyncrawly has all the links http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2916435
@GPS_Music,
If you still want a rooted phone, then rather than flashing straight stock, why don't you save yourself a step, and flash Stock plus root. The links in my signature give pretty clear directions.
Since you originally rooted with files from GalaxyS2Root, the problems you have experienced are very likely related to the quality of those files. If you avoid GalaxyS2Root in the future, and use files from these forums, you will have a much better experience.
Since you want JellyBean, after you flash stock plus root, you could follow my guide to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, and then flash one of the fine JellyBean firmwares available in the development section.
If you have any questions as you go along, feel free to ask them in this thread.

Thank you for your reply.
The main reason I opted to use that site was because of the ese of the steps, as well as the pictures. I wanted a method that was clear so I would minimize me messing up. I will look into your signature links now, but I should note that I don't recall stating I wanted JellyBean...my phone is 4.0.x last I recall, which is ICS.
Hey creepyncrawly,
I was able to download the material from your signature yesterday, but unfortunately my battery wa too low to safely put into downlaod mode (according to the phone, which read something along the lines of "Battery low! Can not download!" in red).
I tried charging it before I went to bed but it would not go past the screen that shows the battery indicator with a loading circle int he middle (which was not rotating). It would then go black and the screen would "retsart" constantly to black screens (I did not notice this until I turned off my room lights, the screen was very black but I could tell it was turning on and off).
I am trying again now to charge it but I seem to be having the same issue. I will leave it plugged to my charger for an hour and then try to turn it on.

It sounds to me like you're trying to put it in Recovery Mode. Download mode is something completely different. Here's what you can do:
- Take the battery out.
- Leave it out.
- Hold down Vol Up and Vol Down.
- While they are pressed, plug the phone into your computer.
This should place you in Download Mode. Then used Odin to flash the Stock Plus Root package.

Download mode is what I was intending for, and Vol Up and Vol Down is what I was pressing.
Are you saying to leave the battery out completely during the entire proces? That doesn't seem right.
As of now, I still can not get my battery to charge. I wonder if the ATT store cna loan me a replacement battery for a little bit.....

Yes, I'm saying leave the battery out for the whole process. The USB connection will supply the power.
Seriously, just give it a try.

I think you mean Gingerbread 2.3.4. Also, if you're rooted, never attempt an official update.
You can do what you want, but if you want my personal opinion, I would suggest a custom rom. If you think ICS was fast, wait until you try Jellybean. If you want a Touchwiz rom, probably go with ShoStock 3. If you want a more stock Nexus-ish flavor, give Task's AOKP a try. Just remember to follow each thread's installation instructions exactly, which means a full wipe.

The main thing I am looking for is a smooth interface, minimal lag, and reliable. Which ROM fits that description? And may you link me to it's instructions?
Thanks!
NOTE: I just experienced a random restart. I was using the phone and the screen suddenly went black and bootted again. This is the same issus I was experiencing before I re-rooted.
Should I be concerned?\
EDIT: It happened agian, not even a minute after the previous one after it was all re-booted up.
I am seeing he following under About Phone:
Model Number: SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: I777UCKH7
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UCKH7

Either of the roms I mentioned will give you a smooth interface and be reliable. And no, you can get to the instructions yourself. I'll give you a hint; the ShoStock 3 instructions are in the ShoStock 3 thread, and the AOKP instructions are in the AOKP thread.
It's pretty clear you don't really know what you're doing, so I'll spoonfeed you a little more. You're not going to use Odin to flash the rom. You're going to use CWM Recovery. You can get CWM Recovery by flashing a kernel that includes it. Here's what you do:
1. Download rom of choice and save it to your SD card.
2. Install Mobile Odin Lite.
3. Download Siyah kernel.
4. Extract the zimage and save it to your SD card.
5. Use Mobile Odin to flash the zimage.
6. Boot into Recovery.
7. Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik Cache.
8. While still in Recovery, install rom.
9. Reboot.
Most people will not (and should not) be as helpful as I just was. In the future, read read read. Read the stickies, search for threads that deal with issues you may be having, and read them. All the info you need is already out there, you just need to learn how to find it.
