I have read that there is a 5gb limit, even with the 'unlimited' plan. is it true, or do we have an unlimited plan?
Its unlimited....I asked a VZWireless Rep about a month ago.

5GB isn't a cap, it's the point of bandwidth degradation for excessive users.

Just don't torrent through tethering and you should be fine. I never use 5GB and I use Pandora and streaming sometimes, and I even have downloaded I think a 100-500MB file before.

Wow. I'd make sure you have a tethering plan.
there is a 5gb limit. I went over and was charged for every kb or mb. When I talked to the tech they said u can pay for an extra 5gb to make it 10.. so unless they changed it I would not go over.. google it and u will find the full detailed info about that unlimited = the 5gm cap
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Verizon wireless website states in the fine print a 5gb limit. They have a calculator to estimate how much usage you can get out of 5gb depending on what you your data for.
Sent from my CELB ERIS using XDA App
Show me this fine print..I blatantly asked the rep if there is an imposed monthly limit on data and he answered no. Their external hardware tethering (USB dongle) solution has a 5 gigabyte per month limit or if you tether your smart phone...ie a BlackBerry.
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Upon checking VZW again, you are correct, the fine print is under mobile data via aircards and BB tether. I guess they don't expect anyone to exceed 5gb on a phone alone. I wouldn't be suprized if they raised an eyebrow on smartphone data usage that high though. It's the golden rule; the one's with the gold get to make the rules

I called Verizon today and they said the "Data Plan" for the phone itself is unlimited, but for Tethering it would be $2/mb!! Is that because they assume we use some sort of Verizon approved app for tethering? How would they know the difference? I want to tether, but Im afraid to get charged a radical amount. I use "Wireless Tether", So it uses the actual data plan.

Only if you were to use a Verizon licensed app would you incur tethering fees....wifi tether is fine to use in my experience. It is not impossible for Verizon to monitor your traffic...be aware there is always a possibility of incurring tethering fees..even if the likelyhood is small.

Won't do it with Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans... anyway, by looking at data usage they can see if you are tethering or not no matter what app you use to do it. LOL.

even though the native Application has a WEP code input option. the Wi-FiTether.apk has a MAC address white listing option along with encryption options so it will only allow certain devices to connect to yours. which i really like. I've been driving down the highway doing 65mph and had people try to connect to my wi-fi that i am letting my wife use for her netbook.
MAC filtering will not allow them to get to the web....
thats my reason for wanting it.
I just use the one built into my phone, they don't charge me and it works great...
Does anyone have the APK of the one that came with the phone? I'm not on stock rom and would like to try the original one
Well in all regards it's a good thing I searched on this subject before I posted anything. In any case does this app let you limit your bandwidth when using it as a wi-fi hotspot? or is there any app that will let me limit my speeds when using the wi-fi?

Wondering if there is any way around tethering and data charges, will be in a hotel for a week and don't care to pay for the internet there. Thinking about trying pdanet.
Will Verizon notice?
tether at your own risk, but chances are verizon will not notice.
Why not use wifi tether ? And there's almost no chance Verizon will notice.
If you're rooted use the latest version of Wireless Tether, if not, ClockWorkMod USB tether is cheap and works on non rooted phones.
Assuming you don't go over your data cap if you have one, you'll be fine. I tether and watch hd netflix on my Xbox all the time

I believe that the data plan does not matter; it is whether you are on 4g or not. When Verizon bought the spectrum for its 4g service it was agreed to not restrict user use of their devices.
The FCC specifically left out the part about unlimited data in their ruling.
And you would be surprised at how many hotels charge for internet access still. I've practically lived out of a suitcase for the past 2 months and had at least 4 or 5 hotels still wanting to charge me for internet access. Or the free access was so miss poor that I ended up tethering anyway.

I've been considering mentioning it. Because of the spectrum that Verizon bought, they cannot "double dip" into our pockets and are not allowed to charge twice for the same data, thus we're allowed to tether. This does not apply to unlimited because the data you use on unlimited is dictated by usage rather than by purchasing a set amount of data per month.

That's true, the thing I meant about unlimited was that if they switched to this they wouldn't have it anymore. And instead of tacking on $30 extra to there bill for the hotspot that the root for wifi is better for them.. but if a person doesn't have unlimited, this plan would be one to think about

I was about to convert my unlimited data plan to a 6GB plan since I only use 4.2 on average and thats without the tons of reliable wifi hotspots I have around me. But then I realized this phone kicks at 1080p, so things like youtube/netflix streams are going to be coming in at higher bitrates. I'll also probably use the phone more than my thunderbolt for general web-surfing since it look so much better. Basically, this phone is going to kick up my consumption levels several factors. 6GB is barely enough for my thunderbolt, I have a feeling I'm going to break the bank with the DNA. So I paid full retail just to keep unlimited.

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I have the DNA, and an unlimited plan. By default, when you try to tether up it will tell you to call your carrier to subscribe. You can do it, but you need to be rooted. If you are rooted then install the Android Wifi Tether app from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Once you run the app use the following settings:
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Enable "WiFi-driver reload"
Enable "Routing fix"
This should get you up and going.
But we're not rooted. This is "tether without root" discussion. If you're rooted, sure, you can use wifi tether no problem. The problem is to tether without root.

Tethering works perfectly for me on ARHD 10.2 (which is what I'm guessing you meant to type). Just go to settings, hit more, mobile network shareing, then go into portable wifi hotspot settings, name your hotspot and PW, then hit the checkbox. I had no problem.
Just curious, when you did your install with AROMA, did you hit AT&T, or international?

I chose AT&T. But I was just asking for a way to get the hotspot free. I haven't tried because I don't want extra changes, but if you telling me that im good then I'll try

I've tethered multiple times in the past, and have never had AT&T bring up the issue. Just don't abuse it.

Well I kinda abuse it. I use sometimes 50gb in a month. But that's because I'm at a friend's during the weekend and the only thing to use is either tether or satilite internet lol

No.... Using the "phone" apn yes, at 5GB of usage I get throttled down to .047mbps down.
Then I just switch over to the wap.cingular APN and BAM pulling 6-10mbps down on H+/3G. No throttling here..
This thread is a bit confusing to me.
Are you guys saying AT&T charges extra for tethering?
ATT charges $$$ for a seperate data plan which lets you tether Internet, which is also limited to about 5gb or 3gb, not too sure. If you use tethering on a regular phone (stock rom with bloatware- fresh from the store), they would probably charge you for tethering because of the detection apk they put in there.
The way to bypass this is to use a custom rom, Internet tethering should work on it, maybe you could reflash/ reset the phone (all the settings and whatnot) maybe try a different rom?
Also, I diddnt know you could bypass ATT throttle, could you post all the complete APN settings to do that?
Cheers,
OK, please forgive me for being slow. You only save money if you're tethering from a phone with unlimited data plan, right? If you're on a limited plan, it doesn't matter and AT&T should not charge you extra, right?

If you go over the limit on a limited plan, they charge you extra $$$. I think it is $20 for 1 more GB.
If you are detected tethering on a stock ATT phone, they will probably charge you for tethering plan
If you are on unlimited data, you may lose it (plan) if you are detected tethering (stock phone),
if you go over limit 5GB for 4g LTE phone they will just throttle you.
Undetected tethering/ Custom ROM with removed att protection = only worry about going over the limit
Cheers,

Ask other people it doesn't change anything. It allows you to use native tethering to use a custom Rom but that's it doesn't change anything else

I agree. The only thing Att or carriers look at is the amount of data being used periodically or the mac/ip address. Carriers have the ability to tell the difference from our phone using data or tethering, especially if data patterns changes.
