[Q] [Problem] Lost "Universal search" when pressing "search" button
Hi all,
Being playing with my Froyo Hero today (running Fusion!ROM).
I have found a new version of Google search in Market, tried to install it but keep says (Installation unsuccessful), so I assumed removing the old version I already have would solve the problem (Yes, Fusion has Google Search as default Universal Search assigned to the search button).
So I used Titanium Backup to uninstall the old version, then downloaded the new one from Market, it worked and installed successfully, but now when I press the search button in home screen nothing appear!
I use Launcher Pro, also when pressing "Menu" then "search" nothing happen!
Looks like I lost the "Google Search" to be used as the default search app , meanwhile the app exist in apps drawer and works great when I open it from there.
So it's just the link between the app and the physical button, How can I fix it
up!
anybody has a clue
Maybe go into Settings --> Apps --> go to the search app in the list and see if you can clear data/reset defaults or something similar, then try pressing the search button to see if it gives options on what app to use?
You know, like when you install an alternative home app?
.... A wild stab in the dark,... worth a try?
I can even restore Google Search with titanium backup. And yes, I did a backup of it!

I did that already. delete then reinstall and also updating it. but the search key doesnt seem to work in the home screen. but f i go to messaging, contacts, music the shortcut key works. only in the homescreen it will not work.
How to make SearchKey shortcut? Please advice. Thanks,.
options>add to screen>widget
my problem is this. When i press the searchkey in the homescreen it does't work. I was hoping someone can help me making a searchkey shortcut script or watever it is,
Does it work if you use zeam (default launcer app on void) instead of launcher pro? I dont think this problem relates to the launcher but more to void, where initially google search was removed hence the shortcut is broken.
bump
any way to fix this? keymapper or anything?
Try uninstall and reinstall..

Hi,
I've asked and searched, but found no answers yet...
I've a HTC Sensation and a few days ago i did a long press on the search button (bottom right). A pop up asked me what application to launch, i choose google voice and tick the case by default. I would like to come back on this choice...
Is there a way to modify which application or function is launched by default with a hardware button?
Thanks
You can go to your applications and clear defaults for google voice if you want to make the choice.

I don't know if it would satisfied You

First of all I have a Sprint Epic Touch 4G AKA Samsung Galaxy 2 S and not rooted, but I think this is an Android problem after 4 days of trying to find a solution.
I keep getting prompt to select which launcher(launcher or twlauncher) when I press the home button. I would select set as default and then select twlauncher. This would work fine and I could do what I want and the home button acts normally. BUT if I long press the home button to bring up task manager and a list of recent apps, it would break the default setting on twlauncher. I could go to setting and manage app and see that the default on twlauncher is now cleared even though I did not manually clear it. I tried checking set as default and then select launcher. It too won't stick AFTER I long press the home button.
Long story short, I downloaded several launchers from the market and none of them will stay set as default IF I long press the home button. It breaks the default every time and ask me to select the launcher to use when I press the home button. Now this would be great if I could just delete all the other launcher and have only one but I can't delete the stock launcher or twlauncher.

So the first time this happen, I was driving down the road using telenav when I see the prompt to select which launcher(something that I've never seen after using the phone for 2 weeks). Did some research elsewhere and found no solutions so here is what I have done in chronological order:
1. Start task manager and kill all active app and clear memory from RAM
2. Clear defaults from manage application....twlauncher
3. Click home button, click set as default and then launcher instead of twlauncher- still does not stick after long press home button.
4. Manage application...twlauncher CLEAR DATA (sure enough my neatly organized homepage and apps folder was reset to stock).
5. Pull battery
6. Cycle power on and off.
7. Gave up after 24 hours and factory reset the phone.
8. Went on my merry way and reinstall apps and customizing home page and apps pages and so on.
9. In hindsight, I should have long press home button every time I installed a new app to see which one will break the default.
10. Phone works fine for 24 hours and then it mysteriously acts up again. It ask me to choose which launcher again.
11. Went back to googling and tried the following which did not work:
a. clear media hub data and default
b. installed Sprint "clean" ID and then later deleting it.
c. installed go launcher and see if it will stick
d. installed launcher pro
e. installed home switcher
f. I don't have Qik or some child lock apps
g. search XDA and found about 15 threads and tried everything in those thread short of using Titanium to freeze one launcher.
Any update on a working solution? Right now I just won't long press the home button to bring up task manager or recent apps and everything will work just fine. Minor annoyance but I guess I can live with it until the ICS update.
its because the task manager is part of TWlauncher and will break the default launcher selection when you use it

No it won't break the default launcher on my wife's stock Samsung epic 4 G touch. I could long press the home button and it won't ask me to choose which launcher when I press the home button.
Fixed Default Laucher Problem.
So I decide to finally root the phone and install Calk's Rom 2.0. Everything was working great but finally, long press the home button breaks the default launcher again. There was only two launchers installed by default. Launcher Pro and TWLauncher. I wiped Dalvik Cache but the problem resurfaced after a few long press.
I launched ES File Explorer, enable root access, show hidden files, navigate to system/app and rename LauncherPro.apk to LauncherPro.bak. That fixed the problem and I rebooted just to make sure. Since there is only one launcher available now, I can't break the default launcher anymore no matter how many time I long press the home button.
Have you tried uninstalling the original home app???

What do you mean by "original home app"? Home switcher, launcher, twlauncher?
I did not find the option to uninstall LauncherPro in Calk 2.0 ROM and no option to freeze it using appextractor either. But renaming the extension to .bak did the trick. I like twlauncher better than launcherpro anyway.
No need to flash new rom or do a factory reset
Rooted Galaxy S4 i337 ATT
I had the same problem and did a factory reset that temporarily solved the problem but that is definitely not the solution.
The problem is the third party software that could be any app (for me was"Photoid Pro")
The Solution: When it happen for the first time (you must reboot after each App installation and if you are prompted to select a Launcher) immediately delete the app you just installed and reboot again, I am sure you will be back to your default launcher.
If already have the problem you should install "Launcher Switcher" from "google play" open and if you see anything beside your launchers Delete them and that would set you back to default launcher.
Install One App at a time so you know the culprit.

--twlauncher crash problem solved, see below. Feel free to answer general question though
Hi all!
Ran into a problem with my Galaxy S that I'd be really greatful if you could help me with.
THE QUESTION:
Is there some way of accessing the phone from my PC via USB and changing settings?
THE THING:
I have been running my system without problem for a while. Haven't made a backup though, stupid #%ยค as I am. When I was using the (stock) Internet browser I tried to add a (mobile) web page to the Start panel (or whatever it is called). Since then I get the error message "The application Start (process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly." Gives option to "Force Close". Whenever I do, the error comes back after a few seconds if I am at the default screen and don't quickly go into the phone or sms app. Basically, I can't do anything that my Ericsson T10 couldn't do in 1999...
I think all of my "start screens" were already filled with apps, that there wasn't room for another, and this might be the problem that causes the twlauncher crash loop.
THE QUESTION (again, in context):
So, is there some way of accessing the phone from my PC via USB and changing settings? During my searching I've come to believe that two possible solutions might be to clear twlauncher's settings or to set another launcher as default, but in the current state I can't get to the settings neither from the started phone or from the Darky recovery console.
I know I could just wipe and reinstall everything but that feels like nuking a mosquito...and it's so tedious... If there is some smoother way to get at the problem that would be nice. Also I'm curious if it can be done, and I'm probably not alone.
THE SYSTEM:
Samsung Galaxy S (GT I9000)
Rooted
Android 2.2.1
Darkys' ROM v9.4 Extreme edition
Voodoo
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot!
/Fredrik
Ok folks, I am happy again!
It seems things fix themselves for me if I only write a thorough post on some forum...
I went to android market with my PC, logged in with my google account (where I had apparently added my phone before) and downloaded another launcher (ADW) to replace my crashed twlauncher. After that I fiddled some more with the phone - obviously turned off network mode from the power menu (the menu that you get when holding the power button 3 sec). And then I wrote the above post.
Just now I was going to make a phone call (which was about the only thing working, remember?) but the screen had gone all black except from the status bar at the top, which didn't respond when I tried to pull its menu down. Brought up the power menu. At first it didn't respond to my touch but after a while it agreed to turn on network mode for me. Then ADW downloaded and installed itself. I still couldn't pull down the status bar menu to click on the "Download complete" icon and launch ADW that way, but I pressed the Home button and got a menu asking "Complete this task with:" and some choices. I ticked the box "always use this program" and selected ADW. Now, ADW started and I am back on track! No wipe or reinstall needed!
SO, short version solution to twlauncher crash loop: log into your Android market account from a PC, search for "launcher" and install one of your choice, then wait for the phone to download and install it. Then press Home, tick "Always use this program to complete this task" and select your new launcher!
Yeah, that solved my problem with Tw.launcher but if anyone has an answer to the question in the thread - is there a way to log into the phone from a PC to change settings - feel free to share your knowledge!
Addition - resetting twlauncher to be able to use Kies
Ok, after installing another launcher as described above, proceed with the following to prevent twlauncher from crashing in the future. You will need to this do if you want to connect with your computer using Kies, since Kies apparently cannot connect to other launchers (such as GO launcher or ADW).
1. Open Settings | Applications | Manage Applications.
2. Go to the tab "All" and scroll down and tap on twlauncher (or maybe it is called something else, on mine it is "Start" - check the twlauncher crash message to get it, or follow the instructions below under "Another way..." to find it in the Home button menu. You still need to complete the whole procedure to get it running though).
3. Tap the "Clear data" button. This clears your settings, i.e. the app shortcuts that you put on your start screens.
DONE!
In my case I believe the twlauncher crash was due to adding one more shortcut to an already full app drawer, so when I cleared the settings I can use twlauncher again.
USING TWLAUNCHER TO CONNECT WITH KIES
Now you can use the Home Swithcher app to launch twlauncher if you want to use Kies, and when you are done you can use Home Switcher again to switch back if you prefer the other launcher you installed.
Another way to get back to twlauncher if you don't have Home Switcher, is to go to Settings | Applications | Manage Applications, find your current launcher (e.g. GO launcher or ADW) and tap the "Clear default" button. Then (when you have exited back to the start screen) if you press the Home button, you will be asked which launcher you would like to use to complete the task. Select twlauncher (or "Start" whatever it's called). After you're done with Kies you can switch back the same way if you don't want to use twlauncher as default.

Such a great thread and no one else has added anything else to it I'm dealing with this crap atm and it is even worst. Holding power doesn't pop up the power menu. Cant access settings. I can bring the notification bar down and turn on wifi but it doesnt actuallly connect to my wifi so I can't do the remote app installation from the web store. I really don't want to do a factory reset.
as was asked here, is there a way to clear the data of the TWLAUNCHER app by using my pc and usb connection to the phone? I'm able to turn on usb storage and access it. Halp!
So I noticed this unfortunate message one day....and it was hard to try and fix it. First, there was no home screen and menu buttons didn't work....and no one online Knew...well this is my short story how I fixed....the problem I made....
First, I was rooted and custom ROM.....but those weren't the problem....I had Titanium Backup and I had Frozen some Apps that I shouldnt have.....PLUS I had other Launchers
SO, when I turned my phone on, the wallpaper was the ONLY THING WORKING!!!! and everything else was not, despite the message....
What you must do is
1. slide down the notification bar
2. press QUICK SETTINGS
3. scroll to the bottom and press ALL SETTINGS
4. Scroll and press APPS
5. press the Home button and you should be sent home.....
5a. If that didnt load up the home screen, Repeat steps 1-4 (sorry)
5b. Click on ALL APPS and find your Default launcher and remove it from default.
5c Once you don't have a default launcher, press HOME...again....
6. go to your apps and open TITANIUM BACKUP
7. Find HTC WEATHER and DEFROST the Weather related apps that are frozen....
8 If the Message keeps coming up....Find more apps that you froze and defrost them.....keep a list of them because the one that stops the message is the app that must not be frozen, and you can use your list to re-freeze the apps again...
This was my story, yours might be a little different but I hope I helped you a little bit....
This doesnt belong here.
