[Q] SE Norway about bootloader+(nothing new but) - XPERIA X10 Android Development

just talked to SE Norway, about update release, q3 here too but no official date.
BUT we came into talking about custom roms and stuff (dunno why)
and he said the main reason for making it as tricky and not sharing anything, is because they want their own dev's working on it...
wtf? is this guy a loose canon from se support, or have they actually tried blocking "you" out..?

Sorry what are you on about?
Are you saying that SE have blocked access to the Roms, so that SE devs(the guys who work on SE roms) can try and crack their own Roms?
Your post doesn't make any sense to me.

I think what he meant is that they've locked down the bootloader so that only the SE devs can work on it. They're not interested in letting the community do any work on it.

That's what I understood from the OP as well.
I'd be fine with that stance if SE actually supported their product with new development, but they don't seem to have much interest in doing so, if the 6-month wait for part of 2.1 and no official plan for 2.2 is any indication.
If they're not willing to support their products, then they should allow the community to do it.

SE are thinking in business terms. X10 is not bad in terms of hardware. So to sell X11 or whatever they come up with, they'll probably advertise as Froyo device to grab people.

That's fine in the short-term, but their stunting their long-term growth (which is what they should be looking at... especially after stating they want to be the #1 Android manufacturer) by alienating their current users. If they don't support their products, people won't come back to when replacement time comes. This goes on for long enough, and word spreads so new customers shy away from their products due to poor reputation.
Just ask GM how well this philosophy works on the long-term.

I agree, it goes against everything Android should be about. Android is supposed to be open and an interesting place for us hackers. That was partof the idea when it was started; to be more open than iOS and Symbian.
But SE also has the right to keep it locked down the way they do. They're not interested in either the open source movement or even Google. They're interested in making money and for that they picked Android since it's the best OS they can use. And if you're only after selling phones then having the community mess around with the phone isn't an advantage.
The fact that we can't do what we please with the phone sucks but SE has all the right in the world to do so. It's something I knew when I bought it, if I wanted a phone I could hack the software in I would've gotten myself an HTC phone or the Nexus One.
I'm completely satisfied with my phone, it works great for that. Anything else like an open bootloader or custom ROMs are just bonuses.

That's true, even though I don't like to admit it...

yes was aware of every aspect of the phone, and while i trust SE to have good devs on it, and im sure it will be just fine, it already is really.
but to actually pay dev's for "locking"(yeah i know, for all you spell checkers its not locked in that sense) an os that promotes it self by beeing free and open, i mean seriously, thats just.. yeah..
but love the phone...
t- mye styr under det svenske valget i år:O

Guys, you're forgetting it's all a conspiracy against american phone users.LOL
Considering US and Canadian consumers aren't spending any money at the moment, SE's strategy is appropriate.

SE's totally being Samsung with the whole support/update issue..
most ppl say oh don't get a samsung phone cuz in 2 mth, they are just gonna come out with a better phone than yours and stop supporting ur phone and it will be garbage..
and look at what SE's doing now..
actually.. ppl who went with sgs have it better now i guess.. at least they are getting timely updates. .and froyo.. i guess they are stepping up to be a better company (not by much.. but still)
come on SE, stop fxxing around

Well !! Now Samsung has got there own problems !!
http://www.gsmarena.com/froyo_update_for_samsung_i9000_galaxy_s_delayed_until_october-news-1948.php
I am waiting for the devs !!

yeah but that's a FROYO update in october..
apparently SE's postponing out ECLAIR update to the end of october... u know what that means..

Perhaps asking SE devs for help could work. Not for inside info or anything but perhaps we could work out a deal. The market for custom ROM's is minimal it wouldn't impact their profit margins in any way, it's not like everyone would use the feature.
Here's my reasoning:
It's safe to assume that the devs over there have a similar mindset to our own, they're hackers. Perhaps we could work out a deal where we could get fastboot and the ability to flash unsigned stuff in exchange for something like voiding the warranty or perhaps even signing an NDA or the like.
It's optimistic but at this point it feels like we have nothing to lose. Appealing to their developers might just work, they're human after all.
Any thoughts?

I say we find one that is wiling to give us the test 2.1 rom or the info on how to crack the bootloader and pay him, create a thread like the bounty for the devs but for a dev of SE or a person with the 2.1 rom. I am sure a lot of people will pay $10-$20 and well get a few thousand quite fast. If i was an SE dev and someone offered me $2000-$3000 for the info on cracking the bootloader i would surely find a way to leak it anonymously or somthing like that.

Hint: check LinkedIn for former SE software developers

These are great ideas, guys! I don't know who to ask for help though...

Desire/Legend Root and its effect on us.

So HTC's two new 2.1 phones were rooted by Paul O'Brian, hours after he had his hands on them.
http://twitteling.com/2010/04/htc-desire-and-htc-legend-has-succeeded-in-the-root/
Apparently it was 'easy'. He is without internet and on vacation for two weeks, so no more details.
For Legend/Desire users it does not mean much yet, due to file systems being locked. However if this could be used on our 2.1 ROMs, we would be wide open.
Did we miss something simple? If you have time, and willingness please join me in looking for something simple, that could of been overlooked by both HTC and ourselves. This has been on my mind for days.
Several Desire owners have informed me that oem unlock is disabled just like our phones, so the n1 method is not what he used. I image the desire/legend kernel is somewhat close to our's. Like our's, no kernel source is available.
Any Shots are welcome.

It was posted on April 1st, its not a joke.
Long time Lurker, first time poster.
I know that the roms from HTC are signed and it would be almost imposable to hack the key used to sign the roms. However have the developers looked at it from the other direction? Do we know how the Eris stores the certificate that is used to check the signed Roms? Dose the Eris use a keystore for this and is that store shared with the web browser? Would it be possible to Inject or replace the Cert in order to sign our own roms? I'm guessing not but you never know.
I'm not a dev so its ok to flame me if this is way off base or been covered before.
Also thank to all the Dev's for all of your hard work.

@jcase: I'm thinking he just used a pre-compiled root (asroot/m7 etc), which would be the easiest possible way to do it. We have tried pretty much all known kernel sploits a hundred different ways and the Eris kernel still stands untouched. However, if these newer phones are vulnerable to the same exploits (need official word on this from Paul), then perhaps they're not patched on Eris, but are just incompatible / working not as intended.
Bounty?
Is the bounty still alive/in effect?
Chances are he doesn't own an Eris. Then again, he might not need to...
If so, well, I'd be willing to contribute to getting one into his hands.
The second build of the leak is acting up for me. I was pretty happy with the first one actually. This is what being impatient does
It'll be awesome to see how this was done as the security on the devices seems similar to ours from the limited amount I can see...
I didn't realize he still was on vacation, I assumed he waited to report his findings until he got home.

He "found" it before ever seeing one of the phones, just a leaked rom. I think its a permissions issue that we may have overlooked in 2.1.
thawkth, about 5 minutes after he releases details, I will know if it applies to us.
I don't think anyone gives a damn about the bounty, if someone does contact caboose and pay him his dues (if he wants them), he got us the root.
I know that jcase isn't really haggin with us any more so hopefully someone will be following up with this, it sounds promising. I am keeping an eye on the OP over at modaco but I am not sure that I have the knowledge base to replicate Pual's work if he shares his exploit. Thanks
I too am hoping this guy can help us.. he is our last hope imo.... short of htc leaking something again.

hey, someone needs to test it in real life. Obviously they have a demo version in use and have to report their findings. How else do you want them to make everything work? Just guessing all their theories are right?
There are more important things to worry about...

Crack Bootloader

I am just asking a question so dont all attacks me now.
Any idea as to when we can all expect bootloader crack guys.
Just give me days, weeks, months or years. No long answers.

sometime before we all die, maybe
We can't expect when the bootloader will be cracked.
Short enough ?

If you had read the numerous other threads regarding this, you would see that the devs themselves said they have no idea.
Sorry to tell you this, but i've just had a meeting at the conference centre with all the devs working on the crack. They say it's going to be 25 years, 4 months, 3 days and two hours. When I asked how many minutes and seconds they kicked me out
You ask silly questions.... you get silly answers
what's the point of reading if i want to ask the question, beside I am directing my question to the Devs team.
You're asking a question that can't be answered, there is no progress bar on cracking something that has yet to be done, the method for rooting this phone's bootloader is somewhat different from other android phones, it can take days, weeks or even years.
It'll be done when it's done.

Why would you get an iPhone? That can't run Android...
So you're going to an inferior OS because you don't have the option to move onto a different OS?
Android 1.6 > iOS4
Even without the root the phone is still better... though a subjective opinion. Plus the do have other phones that are already loaded with custom ROMs that you can buy if you don't already have an Sony Xperia X10.

I beg to differ, before X10 I used to use iPhone 3GS, if I were to compare the flexibility of using both phones for my everyday needs, Android is better regardless of it being only 1.6 for X10 at the moment (better than iOS 3.1.3, and way better than iOS4 on 3GS). And don't bother suggesting me iPhone4, IMO I see nothing new that can change my mind from using any android phones.
As for MT, what do you normally use it for? most apps normally use it for zooming, and games, well for virtual buttons. I even bought an iPod touch just so I wont miss any apps/games released for iPhone/iPod Touch, but it's there collecting dust for the past 4 months.

From a marketing point of view, they are ****ed.

They ****ed us on the X1 and blamed HTC. Made big promises for the X2, we got ****ed even harder then. Now the X10!
Well at least my X10 is functional, not like the X2 I had before this. That was a pile of crap, a beautiful pile of crap... but still crap!
Yeah, hopefully someone cracks the bootloader soon!
This is my first SE phone (X10) since the old SE phones.. My question is.. Why do people like to continue getting EFF'd by Sony from X1 to X2 to X10?!??!
I learned my lesson after the X10.. Last time I ever give in to the brand, without doing my research first.
Sony Ericsson is playing there cards wrong. And, as a result? Lost MANY Potential and "loyal" customers from before.
Good thing i'm not on a contract with this phone!!
I would rather wait for the bootloader to be cracked by the devs anyway, they can take the updates and get better drivers other than that I think we would probably have to wait till october 2011 for froyo alone by SE. But by then I would of sold my phone for scrap metal and got an HTC ^^

Same goes for me, i would wait for the devs, what they do in there spare time for us is beyond anything that the SE devs can do in bringing us the best/newest firmware for the X10. Oh and as for 2011 for froyo that wont happen, i forgot where i read it but SE has said somewhere that 2.1 is the last firmware for the X10 series phones. If however we are able to get froyo as an update, SE would most likely cripple it again like they are doing to eclair as we speak and take out all the new features that comes with the update and only give us the number that shows up before the firmware version.

There's no certainty that we will ever get a cracked bootloader, from SE's perspective; they don't have to stop the bootloader getting cracked forever, just 6~12 months by which time the phone will superseded by newer models and people will loose interest in cracking it as they move on to newer phones. If you look at the dev thread signatures you will see that a lot of them have already got newer devices. What do you think are the chances of them getting another X10 if one gets bricked? Natural attrition will eat away at our dev community unless a hack is found SOON and a homebrew scene springs up around the X10. It's not like X10 is an Apple product and cracking it will get you media attention / notoriety.
I'm sticking with my X10 for now, but I'm not optimistic.

Lets see here we get to install Android on our devices for free and the ROMs are all developed by volunteers. Be grateful that we have a stable Gingerbread port, we will get ICS when its ready. If you want to speed things up get involved with the port or donate towards it.
Can't believe I am even going to enter this thread and reply - but I'd rather wait till they are happy with it and how it will perform than to get some half-cocked ROM released just to shut people up.
If they released it as it is now... people would just start complaining about what they already know doesn't work... EXAMPLE: how many times do people bring up WIFI and sound distortion in regards to the current ROMs?! Everyone knows it's a problem, yet the posts/threads just keep coming.
Let them polish it and enjoy what you have now. It WILL come, but you will appreciate it a lot I promise you when it's released if they take the time to internally test it and feel confident they have done all they can before the first release is placed in user's hands. Another thread about this really isn't going to change anything.
Personally I'd rather the mods just remove these threads that pop up or consolidate them somewhere - so people can easily find the threads that will help them to solve their problems.
Not trying to bait you - I promise - and you are entitled to your opinion, but relax man - it's all going to be ok - I promise! :-D
I too am anxious to get ICS on my touchpad and I do agree that I would have liked to see a beta or an alpha to test it out, but I don't think this is the way to go about asking for it...although I dont know that there is a good way to ask for it, in any case I get where your coming from
Well there is the PreludeDrew Evervolv ICS ROM that just released, you can try that out if your that impatient...
For me, I've tweaked CM7 so much that it doesn't look or feel the same anymore. So basicly i've 'tweaked' it to my taste, and i'm lovin it!
I think the reason why they won't release an alpha or beta, is that people are still trying or getting into CM7. And for a person who is comfortable with CM7, why upgrade to a more buggier OS and nothing works?
EndlessMike, no one owes you a thing. You didn't buy your touchpad from them, aren't paying them to develop or use roms, they didn't promise you a release and didn't imply that you'll get anything...ever.
If you want ICS, buy a Xoom. Better yet, take the time out to learn how to code and develop roms and do it yourself instead of wasting your life away hoping someone will spoon-feed you. Stop complaining.

Speak for yourself... I would like the camera and mic working so I dont have to carry a laptop on business trips just to skype w/ my family.
Thanks to the devs for all their hard work, I'm patiently waiting, and will continue to do so until its released.
I'm getting tired of reading whiney bull**** all ****ing day.

If you think this wait for a free product is bad, try waiting for Samsung, HTC, Motorola etc to release their ICS update for products people PAID for. The lucky ones are going to have to wait months. The unlucky ones don't even get an update at all.
Considering that that the Touchpad was never even meant to be an Android device in the first place and when most of us bought it, Android for the Touchpad didn't even exist, I'm quite happy with what we currently have and what we will be getting whenever we get it. It's far more than I ever expected and I very much am thankful to the developers for it.

Why couldn't they release Alphas? I'd be fine with spotty wi-fi and no video.
And now everything is apparently done including video yet still no release? GUYS, stop being such perfectionists, release alphas/betas. WHATEVER. Just get something out so we won't have to use a phone OS on our tablets anymore. PLEASE.

I can't imagine anything more tedious for a Developer than a perfect ROM, especially when the community requests a taste and later demands perfection.
dis thread is ignant, yo.
You guys are late. I stopped checking for it 2 months ago. It'll come out when it comes out.
It saddens and sickens me to see such threads being made. The ungratefulness being shown to the developers is just sickening; and for some reason, it is worse on this forum than on others.
Rather than be excited and respectful, this entire community is degenerating into a group of whiny, self absorbed group who think that the devs live to serv them, and should bow to their whim.
What i wouldn't give to be able to close this trash myself..

Or maybe the developers can give the community what they want instead of holding back the ROM for inane reasons?
I'm grateful for what they're doing and it's awesome that my $100 is about to get even better with a bit more patience; but I'm not going to pretend for a second I like what's going on here.

Why don't you go outside and find something better to do other than flashing roms that barely work?
