If anyone needs a stock nandroid image (with root),
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YWQJRO90
There is no need to flash this unless you messed up or just want to go back to stock (with root).
instructions:
DO NOT install it as update.zip . you are supposed to unzip the file after you download it and place the folder called 2010-09-21.18.31.12 in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup then you boot into cwm and goto backup and restore -> restore -> 2010-09-21.18.31.12

Nandroid makes a complete backup of your phone, all your data, apps, everything. It's like it takes a snapshot of your phone, and when you restore it your phone will be back to the exact state of when you made the backup.
The image i posted will take your phone back to what it was like when you pulled it out of the package, except with root. In order to use nandroid, you have to flash the cwm kernel and install the recovery for your phone through rom manager.

Ok, so I am getting my Fascinate tomorrow (can't wait by the way). I have been cruising the forums doing my research before I attempt to root, flash CWM recovery, etc. I am completely unfamiliar with with using Odin, but have used nandroid via Amon's recovery on my Droid Eris (which is running Froyo by the way).
Here's my question: how do I apply this image? Do I have to be rooted first, or can I go ahead and apply this zip and never have to fool with Oden? I just want to be sure I don't make a mistake. Eris development was firmly established by the time I arrived on the scene, so I have not had to worry about these kinds of things. Sorry if this seems like a noob question?

nope, the update is not compatible with root right now. Wait for a dev to release the root friendly vzw update.

I really appreciate the prompt response. I think I am going to wait until a dev develops a root friendly vzw update. Or I may go ahead and root and wait till then ..... decisions, decisions
I saw where you posted that some Sticky topics need to be compiled, wasupwithuman. I could not agree more. A couple more questions for you (maybe these will help someone else too) .... (1) How stable is CWM on the Fascinate? I read somewhere that it is a duct-taped together recovery that will do for now. Is this true??? (2) Should I just wait for a dev to develop a custom recovery (like Amon's on the Eris), or is CWM stable enough as it currently is? There seems to be some confusion about this from topic to topic. (3) This is unrelated, but has anyone confirmed Wireless Tether working on their Fascinate. I believe I read that it was somewhere else, but would like to know for sure. Thanks again!!!
P.S. - First link is down, but I found another guide on XDA and will probably just follow it (considering it uses adb which I am familiar with from my Eris).

That's incredibly vague. Anyway, you're better off using Amon-RA's recovery for an Eris, ClockWork Mod is known to brick our phones... assuming that's what you're using. Seriously you've given us next to nothing to work with.
It is clockwork. Thanks I didn't know that. How do I get amon-ra. Recovery.

Easiest way is to run jcase's 1 Click Eris Root, you can find it on the Market or here
Using Amon is pretty straight forward, just boot into recovery (powering off and power on by VolumeUp+Power/EndCall) the navigation is straight forward, uses trackball. The only thing is it will not see any ROMs inside folders, just keep them at the top on your SD Card

Probably won't work if the ROM on the phone is anything but a stock ROM, as the rooting method relies on a specific "chmod" statement in the boot partition's "init.rc" - most dev ROMs don't have this in there.
I believe that ROM Manager has an option to install an "alternate recovery" (in this case Amon_RA v1.6.2) but I have never used ROM Manager, so don't quote me on that.
There's always this thread, but it may be way more than the OP bargained for. I would sooner tell a newb to just restore the phone back to stock using the "Official" 2.1 MR3 RUU (RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe), and then re-root using jcase's Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk thread.

joejoe,
if you are not careful you are going to eff your phone up.
There are a couple of people on this forum that use ROM Manager/Clockwork, but in the past, they have not stepped up to help to people asking about it.
Most of the reasons for that are historical - ROM Manager and ClockworkMod recovery were not available for the Eris as early as Amon_RA's recovery - and early versions of ClockworkMod bricked a number of Eris phones. It probably is a lot more reliable now (on the Eris); but because of that history, most people familiar with Eris rooting methods just continued to use Amon_RA because it worked and behaved reliably.
My recommendation is that you return your phone to stock, and then use the "One Click" app to re-root your phone. At that point you will have Amon_RA on your phone, and you will probably get more help (either here or over on androidforums.com) because there are more people that have that experience with the Eris that can help you out with it.
Either that or you simply need to do quite a bit more reading about how ROM Manager works, what a custom recovery looks like when you are interacting with it manually, etc - it is evident from the questions that you are asking that it is unfamiliar territory for you.
Good Luck

You might want to charge your phone completely (100%) and then put it in fastboot mode prior to firing up the RUU utility on your PC - see the detailed instructions in this post
Hello,
I'm new. I got my Atrix 5 days ago. I migrated from an iPhone 3g. I am on AT&T. I have done TONS of research before doing anything with my phone. I really dont want to brick it and I want to make sure im doing it right the first time and everytime. since its new it has 1.83 on android ver 2.2. I rooted using gingerbreak, obtained sideloading and tether using Gladiatrix. I am contemplating installing Gingerblur but I am hesitant. its not the installation that worries me. its the uninstalling should something go wrong. I understand creating a nandroid back is the way to go as I SHOULD be able to reflash to my backed up stock ROM. and be MOSTLY back to where I am now. here is my problem... HOW? I have done hours of combing numerous forums looking for how to create a nandroid backup. I understand ROM Manager is the way to go. but it keeps telling me "you must have clockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing. Install the recovery through ROM Manager first." so i click "install" and a dialog box pops up and gives me multiple phones to choose from, none of which is my Atrix. so i did more research and found another way (I think) using the Moto a4 bootstrap located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019143 using these instructions (watch from 3:08 to 4:46). Is this where I am going wrong? Im getting this screen (also has a "charge boot" button): http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k...kMod-Recovery-for-Motorola-Atrix-4G_thumb.png
what am I missing? What am I doing wrong? how do i create a nandroid backup?
I have found numerous posts/sites that tell me to use ROM Manager but im getting the above error.
Do I even want GingerBlur this bad?
thanks for listening and I really hope someone has some answers soon as I have spent HOURS looking for an answer. in the mean time im going to bed.
You're almost there. Click Install Recovery. Allow root. Make sure your phone is plugged into the wall charger. Then click Recovery Boot. Your phone will reboot into recovery, and there should be a menu item for backing up your phone. Use the volume up/down to navigate the menu and the wake button to select.

so this AM went into recovery mode and made a backup to my external SD card. will ROM Manager work at this point? or is it not completely supported yet (because its not in the list)

I got this answer on another forum with a similar question:
In a nutshell, in order to use CWM and do a Nandroid backup, you must use a phone that has an unlocked bootloader; which allows certain changes to be made to the Operating System which enables those two apps. The Atrix has not yet been unlocked, and Gingerblur is not a true ROM. It's only a "pseudo-ROM"...more like a theme on Android than a rewritten version of Android, which is what a true ROM is. So, in other words, "you can't get there from here".

Hello,
I am unable to post in the Developement threads at the moment due to the post limit but thought I would ask here and hopefully someone can help me.
Firstly, I have a Locked BootLoader that cannot be unlocked, I have rooted my XS and it is running ICS, I pretty much have it the way I want it but would like to try the MIUI ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768057 which works for all BootLoaders.
Secondly, I need to know if I will lose Root access by flashing the above ROM and also if I will lose all my personal Data. I have CWM installed and have backed up everything it will alow me to back up. But I am just concerned about losing root access and personal data.
For those of you who have flashed the ROM, can you tell me if root access is removed and if personal data is also wiped?
Thank you in advance and I appreciate all answers.
Personal data like pics, music and movie will not be lost if they are on the ext sd card.
Root should stay, but all apps that you install will be wiped so you need to download again from play store and make a backup for contacts and sms.

Would backing up via CWM not be advisable, just backup using the Sony PC Companion or the Backup and Restore utility on the phone itself, should I just use them all to be sure?
Thank you for the reply, much appreciated.
Allow me to add, all Media files are on the additional storage of the phone, the 32gb, I am just worried about SMS, Contacts and so on.
Also, with the above mentioned ROM, are there any limitations as to what apps would run, for instance, ICS compatible apps I previously purchased should have no issue?
Forgive my ignorance, I am not so familiar with Android.

Any chance you could point me in the right direction?
I originally used the method outlined by Sharaz22 to root my XS, downgrading to GB and flashing several things, but that is the only thing I have read on the subject of rooting a locked bootloader and to get it up to ICS rooted, I have not read about any special method for MIUI to maintain root access, even in the thread I linked above I could not see a work around, unless I am going blind.
Again, thank you and your help is appreciated.

I lost both when I flashed MIUI. I still had root, but not CWM. For locked bootloaders, the CWM is installed in the /system partition. When you flash MIUI, all of the files in that partition are changed, so you lose it. You can either reflash CWM like you did the first time or you can use this method (I forgot I had the link): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1787532

Nope. Flash ROM with CWM, wipe what you have to wipe, and before rebooting, flash the CWM package (no need for the Superuser one)
Guys, I suffered some mishap yesterday trying to flash MIUI on my phone.
After the flashing process with CWM, the phone would not boot, no response other than a single flash of the green LED and a vibration, it would not boot and i tried for over an hour. In the end I had to use Flashtools and get ICS back on the phone.
Since that, I cannot root my phone again, I have tried and tried, the first time I did it, it was easy and straight forward, downgrading to GB and using the batch files and so on, but now, each and every time I try to do it and follow the guides, of which I have found two, it does not work. That is because the process states that the "Device is not detected" and it cannot locate anything related to ADB. I have checked the drivers, installed several, reinstalled flashtools and each time I go through the guide I am left with an unrooted phone and nothing seems to work. Even in flashtools it struggles to flash the ROM every now and then and the phone just seems to randomly disconnect even though it remains plugged in.
Any help, I am struggling to get anything done on this phone and I would rather just have Root and CWM than MIUI.

This is completely off topic and I am very sorry for this I am just very desperate. But I mistakenly deleted a system file I shouldnt have without backing up and now the play store, youtube etc will not let me login. Can you make a backup of all the system files or even make a rom? Thanks. If you can it would be greatly appreciated. my email is [email protected].
Dark... you can do that but you would then have to lose root. My suggestion to you is you use the unroot method in superuser if your superuser has the option or get universal unroot from the play store. you would restore your backup of the stock rom and then remove all that you can like recovery and then use 1 of the methods i mentioned to break root.
The point being is you can go back to complete stock rom but if you are still rooted and they see then "no warranty for you!" (heh warranty nazi)

Also, michaelgg13, if you can tell me which file you are missing, I can try to get it and send it to you if that will help?

Thats the thing I am not exactly sure which file it is. Im kind of stuck. it must be some sort of google service. Is there anyway to backup all of the stock files? I am new to android so I am trying to figure this out haha. Thank you for answering though.
no the su binaries will stay which gives superuser the write permissions to the root of the device such as /system
Flashing the rom back just puts all the files back as they were, plus you backed it up with the su binaries intact so it will still be there after the restore of stock rom

Ah, I see. Well, I've added a couple different things into my system files so I don't think you'll want all of that. However, if you have your files and contacts backed up, there was a thread somewhere either here or on another forum that had the stock ROM that you could flash with Odin. I could try and find that for you if you want it.

Ooh...I think you might have me mistaken. I'm asking if I flash a completely stock ROM with Odin. NOT a Nandroid backup or any other form of backup. Just a stock ROM with Odin. Would that reset everything back to official status?

Hey well thanks a bunch for trying!!!
EDIT: just tried the link again, it is actually taking me to the download page but the download doesnt work. so close i can almost taste it!
EDIT 2: after reading their facebook page they said they are having dns issues, so they should be back shortly!
ahhh maybe you will break root then. If i remember right from my Bionic if i FXZ'd with House of bionic it redoes EVERYTHING wipes the system.img.. just everything boot.img all of it.
I'm not exactly sure how that would work to be honest cause flashing the rom back may still leave those binaries in... this is something I'm not totally sure on but i still do not think it will break root.
Noob question but, i rooted my device and messed around a little bit with my build.prop if I ever wanted to reset my device what would I have to do?

since you are rooted i would recommend making CWM backup so you can restore from it if anything goes wrong
hope this helps!

I didnt do that before I made changes to the build.prop! Whoops....my phone is running fine but just a precaution I would like to know....I also added a file from to system/etc.... This was to try to enable moving apps to the SD card...I chickened out...

as long as you have CWM installed you can download a stock CWM backup for your phone version from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136204) and recover from it, if you do not yet have CWM installed i highly suggest doing so before you go too far! though you can always use this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786) to unbrick if something did go terribly wrong, it will still be easier to do a CWM restore
goodluck!
You can extract all original files from the kdz, look at my thread.
