I'm thinking of getting a Verizon Touch Pro when it's available.
Right now, my battery life on my Motorola Q is terrible. I live in an area where the signal is pretty poor and I think that's the main reason for the bad battery life.
If I go into the "secret" settings on the Q, I can change it to CDMA Only and that disables EvDO and probably gives me at least a 50% increase in battery life.
Unfortunately, it's pretty much of a PITA to go back and forth.
So, if I get a Touch Pro, I guess I have to hope that it's better at picking up a signal (probably not, right?) or that there's some way to put it into CDMA Only mode.
Does anyone know, for sure, that'll be possible?
Now, if that's possible, does a program already exists or could someone easily just write a program that would give me a program icon that if I click it, it toggles the phone between CDMA Only and Automatic? I'm thinking something like the nodata program that I've used before, but even better would be just click on the icon to toggle and no submenus to go through.
I know on the Q when I change back and forth, the change is immediate (Ev icon turns to 1x and vice versa as soon as I make the change), so if I had an icon to just make the change for me without digging through 4 menus to make a change, I might be able to live with just activating EvDO when I'm going to use it.
Any help is appreciated.

I just upgraded from a q, i havent recieved my htc yet so ill try and help with your q problem.
First and foremost never ever let the battery run down. My q worked fine for a year and a half until tuesday the battery ran down and i got this
Anyway, make sure its not going out and checking your email every 1,5,10,15 minutes etc. That really kills the battery fast. Bluetooth too. When I disabled those i saw my battery life skyrocket, but it still went down pretty fast when i used the internet and camera. maybe those two things will help you in the interim though.
you think your moto q battery is bad wait til you get to the your touch pro. i forced my touch pro (data speeds sucked big ones) to 1x by going to settings phone and roaming i set it to roaming only? but that is a sprint version i dont know if verzion allows you to pick roaming only
benitojuarez, I appreciate it, but it's none of that. The reason for the bad battery life on the Q is that the signal is low and it's fluctuating between 1x and EvDO. When I set it to 1x only, the battery life is fine.
cjmedina, yes, I'm worried about that.
That's why I'm here. I'm still hoping someone could come up (either it exists already or someone could make it) with a little utility that when clicked would toggle between 1x (CDMA Only) and Automatic modes. I think I could live with that.
I can't imagine that'd be too difficult. You can force 1x on your Sprint, I can force 1x on my Q. The change takes effect immediately. There's got to be an easy way to program it to happen.
It sounds like you might benefit from this type of program as well. I know on my Q, I rarely switch back from 1x only, just because it's about a multi step process that's a slight PITA to make the change. If I had a one step process, I could leave it as 1x while it's just sitting around and quickly change it to EvDO when I want to use the net. At least that's how I envision it.
Lastly, I'm not certain that my Q hasn't just been defective for 2 years now. I even have the 2100mah Seidio battery and if i leave it as Automatic, I pretty much can't get a full day out of it. If I set it to 1x, I can make it though the day unless I use it real heavily.
I'm worried that unless the TP has a better radio, I might not even make it though the day on 1x only mode. I guess we'll see what happens.
Is there anyone who can assist here?
I can't imagine this is something too difficult. Everyone phone I've had so far allows it to be put into a 1x only mode.
With the work all of you guys do customizing, someone must have a good handle on what needs to be changed to put the phone into 1x mode.
Am I in the right place or should I have posted this in a different forum?
Well, hopefully, someone can come up with something...or point me to something that already exists.
Thanks!

I didn't come up with it but I have tested and it works like a charm.
To do this, you will need your MSL number, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you.
1) Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST).
2) You will be asked to enter your MSL. Enter it, and you will be brought into the provisioning of your phone.
3) From the top left, select Modem Settings
4) Preferred Mode: The Default is Automatic, which is the best available mode (EV that will roll back to 1X when EV is unavailable). There are times when you might be in a fringe area and your mode may cycle frequently and this can seriously drain your battery. Setting this to HDR will force EV-DO only if you demand an EV-DO connection. Changing this setting to CDMA Only will force the phone to ignore an EV-DO tower and maintain only a 1xRTT connection.
*Change your "Slot Cycle" while you are on this page to one so your phone polls towers every 2 sec instead of 5 sec. I did know about this trick but did not know the force 1xRTT was one of the setting on the same page.
here is the cab for roaming only un zip and install
mrrogers1, I appreciate the response, but, first of all I'm on Verizon.
On my Q, I can do ##*, go into the "secret" menu, to to the option to change it to CDMA only, save it and back out.
It's just too long a process to really do it frequently, so I just wind up leaving my phone in 1x mode and that stinks.
So, what I was looking for is just a program to install that would activate/deactivate that option by just clicking the program icon.
cjmedina, before I install that, can you tell me exactly what that is? Is it for Verizon? What do you mean by roaming only? I want 1x/CDMA only. Will it just disable roaming or is it a toggle thing? I don't want to risk installing something that's not easily reversible.
Roam only wouldn't really address this because if you (at least for me) roam in EVDO coverage the phone stays in that mode. Forcing 1x is something different all together.
Changing in the modem settings is it for now and works well.
I went from a 9c to a Diamond. Maybe the TP is much different but my Diamond signal strength is a little lower than my 9c.
Combine that with the Diamond/TP already bad heat issues, battery life I don't think you'll be happy with it.
Just go to reg and mimic these keys.. It will enable the ability to switch it on and off in the settings panel.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting]
"HiddenModeOperationPage"=dword:0
"HiddenAlertPage"=dword:0
"HiddenNAMSelectPage"=dword:0
"HiddenAlertPage"=dword:0
"HiddenVoicePrivacyPage"=dword:0
I actually found this elsewhere and it works.
---
Here is the Registry edit for enabling Hidden Phone Settings "Mode of Operation" option to pick 1X mode only.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting
Change the option HiddenModeOperationPage from 1 to 0
Then go to Phone/menu/option/service/and check in the list, "Mode of Operation" should be at the bottom. You have 3 choices, Hybrid, EVDO, and 1X.
---
With your way, it is supposed to appear somewhere else? You mention settings, but I don't see anything new there.
What does changing HiddenAlertPage, HiddenNAMSelectPage and HiddenVoicePrivacyPage to 0 do?
I'd still like an easier way to do it, like a toggle I can put in my start menu.

What would be really neat is an app that would force 1x unless you were in certain applications (like opera or you tube) and than switch to hybrid for the duration of the session.

For what it's worth, someone posted a mortscript over here

that toggles 1x/hybrid.
Works pretty quickly too. I'm happy.

that post works great, one of the guys on the post made a program that lets you run a script that does it all for you whenever you wanna switch back and forth between 1x and hybrid.

That script is probably the best option. Otherwise there's a registry key that enables the menu option, though I can't remember where it is. Verizon usually has the option disabled so the key needs to be added to the registry.
So I found through the Advanced Config a way to add a 3G on off button in the comm manager, but as we are CDMA it does not work for us. Can anyone confirm what this button is trying to do? Perhaps a redirect to the reg setting for hybrid/1x?

I know you noted that it wasn't your idea, but maan, did it work. Thank you so much. that was the last step I needed for my HTC Touch PRO to work on MetroPCS web... this is the easiest method (rather them editing registry)!! Thank you much.
Has anyone made this work on a Verizon HTC Touch Pro2?
My extended battery lasts about 12 hours (EVDO 0-1 bars in buildings) and I think this could help me.
The *-something and #-something numbers place a call that says invalid number. The registry edits don't make anything for Mode of Operation appear under "CDMA Services" on Phone Settings.
Help?
I have an HD2 that I purchased from O2 Ireland. I switched to 3 Ireland about two months ago due to an unlimited data deal. I just changed sim cards and everything worked; phone, data, wifi.
I flashed the latest stock rom 3.14.206.1(04666)WWE that would work with my phone. It's the stock rom for the O2 HD2. Since flashing, I cannot get a data connection. The phone works fine so I know the phone isn't locked to O2, but when I go to Connection Settings, the only choice in the drop down menu is O2!
Is there any way to bypass this so that I can set the phone up automatically to three? Is there perhaps some other work around. Imagine, an unlimited data plan and I can't use it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I gotta ask: You are in Ireland but your flag shows US?
I found some settings here, they are for a different device, but may help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-315848.html
Search for (its on these forums in several places, I've posted it myself before now, but i'm afk) connectionsetup.cab, or extract one from the unbranded 3,14 rom if you know your way around a kitchen.
It has pretty much all the networks in it. You can uninstal it after its done its thing to save 12 or so meg.
Install it, reboot, it will auto run, uninstal it.

The answer is quite simple; living in Ireland, born and raised in Brooklyn.
Thanks for the settings, now if I can just figure out how to get my Leo to take the settings.

Thanks very much for that. I found an HTC connectionsetup.cab and installed it on my phone for the 3 network Ireland, excellent!
BUT! When I open Opera I just get a white screen, nothing comes up, I can't even get a search page. I tried opening Marketplace and the error message came that it couldn't connect to the server. Any ideas please?
Edit: Problem solved thanks to you both! Since running connectionsetup (samsamuel) I was able to put in the 3 network settings (stevedebi) manually. I've even got the mms settings in and tested. Many thanks to you both! How I love this forum!
~So I haven't really seen anyone else with this issue so I don't know how to fix it.
My phone likes to randomly not load things via internet. Mostly happens with ATT Data connections, but sometimes it happens with Wifi as well I believe (hasn't happened with wifi in a long time).
I can try and load a page and it will simply not load a thing for a good while (sometimes hours), then all of a sudden it will load like it's on a 10MB connection.
Happens with the internet browser, facebook, and any internet apps. Really gets annoying when I'm trying to browse the internet
I have tried different APNs to no avail, tried turning wifi on/off, changing all wifi settings, etc.
Anyone got any suggestions? (Maybe I'm just retarded and there's a well-known fix for this... at least I can hope right?)
Thanks
EDIT: It also used to never send MMS until I changed APN's if that makes any difference. Just not sure if its a software/setting issue, or if its hardware that needs to be replaced.
There are two APN settings, one of which is used by MMS. It sounds as if your APN settings might have been wrong at one point. What are your APN settings now?
Are you on a different ROM? Do you use a 3rd party app to disable and enable the data connection (to save power)? I know my app sometimes doesn't turn the data back on, so I have to go in and do it myself.
Is this your first phone with AT&T? If so, where did you transfer form? Did you have a data plan with your previous carrier? Did you buy your phone from Amazon?

My APN settings are the "phone" HSPA and "phone" MMS settings from the large thread in this forum.
The phone isn't even rooted. No different ROM, just a stock phone. No 3rd party apps that disable/enable data.

I've had ATT for a decade or so now. Phone bought and activated in an ATT store, and last phone I had was an iPhone, so whatever data plan that used was what I was previously using. I would assume they changed the plan to reflect the android device (if there is any difference), but I wouldn't really know because it is on our family account.
Anybody got any clue? This is really annoying the **** out of me. Also found out my brothers phone (on same family plan) is doing the same thing.

Maybe download Tweakker from the market; it automatically rewrites APN settings for your phone and carrier. CM7 uses wap.cingular, and I used Tweakker to change it from that. Worked, no probs, loved me long time, yada yada.
Thanks, just downloaded it. We'll see if it makes any difference.
Worked great until just now. Lost internet again. Thanks though.
Any other ideas?
i am on AOKP, not sure if you have the options to do the following in stock but try.
1.do you have the option of deleting APN? delete all...
2. force the phone to look for wireless carriers (takes like 4 minutes).
3. click on At&t to registet on it.
4. reboot and the original apn should be there.
I reset it back to the original APN but I dont expect it to help... I had the problem even before I started messing with the APN. We'll see how it goes though.
Any other suggestions are still welcome.
I have a similar, if not the same problem. I have concluded that it's either a modem/hardware issue or network issue. Every one and a while, I'll have to wait ~20 seconds for the internet. This always happens on AT&T data. Once the connection is made, the green and orange data indicators light up and the page loads just fine. Changing the APN's increases my internet speed by a lot, but does not fix the latency issue.
Someday I'll get around to calling AT&T.

Sounds like the same issue to me.
I keep thinking I should go to the ATT store but I really dont feel like having them do a reset of my phone then send me home without actually fixing anything.
Have you noticed what kind of connection you have? I don't use stock, so I haven't thoroughly tested this there, but I believe I experience the same issue. I'm running CyanogenMod 7, and what I see is that whenever the phone drops to 3G, I don't get data. I can force 2G (Edge), which works, and if I pick up HSPA+, I get data. If I'm in fairly sketchy signal areas (bad parts of buildings, fairly far from towers, etc.), I'll notice it flip-flopping back and forth between 3G and H+, with no data. I've never had an issue with wifi not properly loading anything.
I did try switching back to stock for a couple of hours, and it appeared my issues were more along the lines of what you describe, without actually displaying a flip to 3G when I can't get data...but like I said, I don't use stock on a regular basis.
NINJA EDIT: I'm on my second phone with this issue, after getting a refurb due to a USB port going bad. I've tried flashing multiple modems, and have been able to increase my speed, but have not been able to fix the issue when I drop to 3G.

Im in an area where I constantly get 4G or LTE... I haven't really noticed a correlation between the drops and whether or not its on 4G/LTE. I haven't experienced it on Wifi in a very long time though.
Also, the stock APN seems to magnify the problems greatly. Switched back to the Tweakker APN and it runs much better (although it still happens occasionally)
Had the same issue as you, try my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576199 it seems to have helped many!
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy S II (I777) Killin' it with Task650's awesome AOKP ROM port!
Thanks but the Tweakker APN seems to have solved the internet issues. Only problem now is that MMS doesn't work with the Tweakker APN. Anyone got any suggestions on that?
I was quickly able to activate my Samsung Vitality (Gingerbread 2.3.4) to Page Plus with some limitations to MMS and default browser and stable 3G. After two weeks of reading every post I could find, I decided I should ask here !
1. The ##Data# does not do anything so I am unable to edit the default "Cricket" internet/MMS settings and apply the Page Plus settings. This causes issues with the default browser... it doesn't work and with MMS message sending. I have been able to overcome the MMS issue by apply a Page Plus APN, but it doesn't correct the browser. Does anyone know how I can get into the ##DATA# mode ?
2. I use QPST to change the settings necessary for Page Plus including the latest 3G PRL. 1x is solid as a rock, but 3G comes up, sometimes I can get a single web page to load then it drops ... within a few min. it will drop again... any idea on this ? (I am trying to be brief so if you want my QPST/PRL info please ask and I will provide.
3. I know Samsung had a "generic" update to 2.3.6, but it is no longer showing as available for download .. does anyone have the update available for download ?
Thanks in advance

I assume this is the 2.3.6 update and I installed the program on my desktop. However, when I start the upgrade process .. it tells me to hold the following keys ; "camera key,USB cable". Not sure what this means. I assume the camera key is the key configured for the muve music launcher presently, but .. for the usb... scratching my head . I assume I need to use a key sequence to get into the correct mode.. can you tell me what that is? Really appreciate your reply.
I figured it out -- hold camera key while plugging in usb cable !

Thanks ! I successfully updated to the 2.3.6. Unfortunately, I still have the problem with 3G, browser, mms msg and now with the Google Play Store. Steps taken -Used one click root to get root back, activated via *228, updated PRL, checked settings in QPST, identical as they were before.
1. Using same method as before to enable mms. I go into airplane mode, delete apn and load the pageplus apn via apn backup & restore app. Then MMS works. Do I need a special MMS.apk for page plus ?
2. Stock browser, dolphin both still have same issue on data (not wifi), connection error on any url load - Opera mini works in socket mode but has same problem if changed to http.
3. 3G has same symptom, it will reflect 3G in hybrid mode and in EVDO mode, but drops out comes back, drops out and cannot load web pages etc.. in CDMA mode only, have solid 1x like before and 1x speeds.
4. New problem, Google Play Store unable to connect unless I use marketaccess.apk to manually set to Verizon 310004 and emulate on boot. I expected the upgrade from market to google play to eliminate the need for me to continue to emulate the provider I am on in the US.
Thanks again !
Update
Update on browser issue. I called Page Plus .. told them I was using a "motorola Citrus" even tho they know I'm not, the rep looked at my settings and said hang on there are a couple of features that could be enable.. 5 minutes later I reactivated and the stock browser works. I wish I could tell you what features on my account they enabled, but they did not tell me. Prior to this my only browse ability was thru Opera Mini configured in socket mode... like I said .. http would not work. I assume they default "unknown" phones to WAP. So if you have a smartphone and are having problems with browsing with stock browser ...
This did not fix the APN issue. I still must use the pageplus apn file and restore it after every reboot or I cannot send MMS messages ...I have provided what is default on my phone ... after activation ? vs. what I enable to get MMS to work
3G - Same issue .. it will not stay connected in hybrid or evdo only mode
Market- Same issue I must use market enabler to emulate the US carrier code I am on after every reload .. the "emulate on boot feature" does not work !
As a side comment .. this is my 14th time attempting to correctly enter the different "spam protection code" ...
Does anyone have links to these files for the sch-r720?
When I first got my phone a cpl years ago, I had really good cell service. There were "dead" zones that other phones had issues with, but I was able to keep talking while going through those zones. I could also use data in those areas.
I don't remember exactly when, but when Cricket/ATT sent an OS update several months back, I no longer get that good of service. The dead zone is actually now much larger than it had been. I also can no longer use my phone inside the house, or even send/receive txt messages without having to set the phone near the outside wall, or step outside.
Is there any way possible to downgrade? Or maybe root and change some setting somewhere? I've already tried doing a factory reset, and that did nothing. Reset APN's to defaults, nada. Even did a Wifi/BT/Network reset to defaults, no go.

Before trying other solutions (e.g., downgrading to Android 10), you may want to consider contacting your service provider to see if there is an updated sim card available for Android 11. If your phone is similar to mine, there is no longer the + sign to add new apn's in your network settings. The apn is hard coded on the sim card with no option now to change it in network settings, which would have perhaps been the simplest solution. The other option is to see if there is an update for the apn that your service provider can push through for installation.

Ahhh, ok. Good point! Thanks. I'll contact Cricket and see if they may have one. I hadn't even thought of possibly needing an upgraded SIM card.
And yes, you are correct, the APN is all greyed out and the + is missing. I can't even access it from 3rd party options.
