i would like to turn off devices on my TG01 off to save power:
i use my TG01 just as a pocket pc, i.e. i have no sim card inserted. nevertheless, battery is down at 40% after 1 day of standby, even when in flight mode.
as i heard that flight mode does not really work on the TG01, i would like to selectively turn off devices like phone (gsm, 3g), wlan, bluetooth, motion sensor (all the things i don't need), while keeping the gps still working.
is there a rom version or a tool that allows me to really turn off devices separately?
or is there a rom version, specially made for people just using the TG01 as a ppc?
so far, i always have to keep bluetooth running, as the gps does not seem to work as soon as i turn bluetooth off (no idea why it is like that). maybe it's bluetooth that drains so much power...
i actually run the wm6.5.5 v5 rom from novembre5
or is there anything else i can do to save power?
btw:
i tried to measure the current, the device draws from the battery, to find a setting that is the most power saving. unfortunately, all battery meter tools i tried are not able to show actual current. is there a tool that supports the TG01?
please help!
Some tips...

Use wireless manager to turn off/on phone, bluetooth and/or wi-fi separately.
In settings/motion sensor settings disable autoscreen orientation, in settings/sleep mode indicator tick off, in settings/power saving settings un-tick automatic brightness and choose a brightness level according to your needs and so on...
Does not really help!
...and with all those things disabled, the battery is down at about 40% after 1 day in stand-by (when the TG01 has not been used for 1 day)!
so i think there's still something drawing a lot of power!
to compare:
my hp ipaq 214 ppc, running wm6 too, is down at 40% after being in stand-by for 2 weeks, i.e. it's power consumption within 2 weeks is about the same as the TG01's power consumption within 1 day, when in stand-by...and the ipaq is much older than the TG01!
so it seem's obvious that the TG01 just tells to have everything turned off, while still having things running...
Very interesting...
Why don't you keep this thread opened in TG01 General , for instance? I'm afraid that your question it's not related with ROM development...(wrong subforum)
Best Regards
i thought there might eventually be a rom version with the PHONE FUNCTIONALTY DISABLED, or with tighter hardware/power control!
or maybe, there is a rom version OPTIMIZED FOR LOW-POWER!
that's why i placed the thread here.
if there is no way to get help in the rom section, this thread can be moved to general, but i have no idea how to do this.
thanx!

I am also enjoyed my TG01 without a sim card and then be surprised that it holds several days without being charged. So if your battery falls on a day not to use it, then the battery has a reduced capacity. Try several cycles - full charge, use it while off and only then put it to charge. Maybe this will help you.
hm 'holds several days without being charged' sounds good
so how are your settings for bluetooth, wlan and phone?
btw: i bought another battery because i first thought that it is a battery problem - but now it's the same with both of them.
i also turned the phone on once (but without a sim card), and it looked like the battery discharge was about the same as in flight mode.
i read somewhere, that because of a bug, the TG01 turns power of the phone chip on, when the device is set to flight mode, and therefore bluetoot or wlan has to be turned on to really turn off the phone (and save power).
on the other hand, i would like to use the gps, but the gps does not work when the unit is configured to flight mode.
so what is the ideal configuration for reducing power consumption?
thanx!

I believe you don't need a 1ghz processor device if you compare it with a 624mhz.
For tg01 you can even limit cpu speed for better power consumption in power saving settings...
i think when in stand-by, the TG01 cpu does not clock at 1ghz.
i compare stand-by power consumption, i.e. the cpu has almost nothing to do then.

hi,
I don't know if I'm the only one that has this problem, but the TG01 battery drains very fast (compared to other devices I have, using teh smae services i.e. 3G, push mail and BT), it takes almost 14-18 hours then needs to recharge.
also i wanted to switch off the 3G or the push mail, but the Comm Manager doesn't allow this.
any idea?
Yes this is a major issue with TG01 unless you buy (as I did) an extended battery from Mugen.
To save battery :
- turn off automatic baclight settings and reduce backlight intensity
- use NoData to disable data connections
- reduce CPU speed unless you need power (DivX playback for example)
Or buy a 2600mAh Mugen battery... My TG01 last more than 2 days with intensive use (with 8 hours divx playback with Bt used with Bt headset, about 30mn Internet by 3G and normal phone use, and backlight settings and CPU at full power).
Mugen batteries increase TG01 thickness and weight except the 1300mAh one.
I have just ordered the 2600mah battery as well as the normal battery that comes with the TG01 just doesnt last 12 hours without needing a charge.
Small price to pay for a £150 phone though, these sell on play.com for nearly £500.
My battery don`t take 18 hours or so to recharge, you might need to let the battery go flat and then fully charge it several times and see if that helps, if not, take the phone back for a new one, might be a faulty unit or battery.
Thanks Howell for the advice, but i can' switch off data, nor 3G.
the Wireless manager does not allow to do so.
can you please advise how to reduce teh CPU speed?

To switch off the data you need MoDaCo NoData. You have to register but its free and has a good TG01 forum.
To change CPU speed go to Start\Settings\Power Saving Setting, then select power saving or set up user customisation to a lower setting.
Greetings,
I guess this question is not new, and is covered in several other topics, but nevertheless I will like to ask by what means Folio battery can be saved and how battery life could be improved?
Regards,
Bastospn
I'm not sure if what I suggest is good, but my tips are:
1. Don't use unnecessary widget
2. Don't always turn on Wifi and bluetooth when you're not using them
3. Don't always charge the battery when it's not about to drained (I only charge when the battery level is below 10% or even more extreme as 5%...)
And I think best way to maintain a good battery life is to use DC adapter (with battery taken out) when you're near to a power socket (at home for example). Only use battery when you have to move around. That way you can reduce the recharge cycle and don't need to worry much about battery life
By the way, just a quick check, how long can your Folio battery last in a full charge? (with all settings to highest, like brightness, wifi + surfing net?) Mine can last for about 5-6 hours.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is about to release its 2nd-gen tablet with battery rating about 3 times higher than our Toshiba Folio tablet...
I read that putting tablet into flight mode(and thus deactivating some phone features) can help.... If wifi is needed -one can just re-enable it in settings...
Can anyone comment this ?

It helps A LOT. Wi-fi seems to drain this device a lot even tho there's not much data transfer. Battery use reports insane percentages for wi-fi on my device at least.
And no need to go to settings, just create a widget for wi-fi activation
Also :
- use a non-animated background
- kill the apps you don't need
HI GUYS
IM USING RADIO 2.15.10
AND HSPL 2.08 ,
MY BATERY DRAIN VERY QUICKLY , I HAVE ALL SETTINGS OFF , 3G OFF. WHAT I DO WRONG or what i need to to to corrrect this issue.?
anyone are having the same prob??
tnks to all
there are at least 2 threads on the first page about this...
check the first post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041912
i read in one of the threads that we should charge the battery in magldr usb mass-storage mode for about 6 hours, and that worked brilliantly for me...
gave me about 40 hours of battery...! (3g on / data/wifi off - data/wifi on when needed)
i try use that mode but the charger light dont show ON , is not charging , i try using the charger directly to ac power and cable directly to pc mode but nothing he didnt charge .
Radio 2.15 seem to drain battery too much (from my own experience).
You can try old radio and see if battery life is getting any better (I recommend 2.12 & 2.14)
omg my phone only hold on 11h today with low usage, i dont know how to make him stay more time alive , the raDIO 2.15 I DONT THINK is the problem because many users are using 2.15 and dont say any... any sugestion??? if i cant fix the prob i need go back to andoroid or 6.5 version

Try to use HD20 1.12 and do video trick - with low(if it's realy low) usage it will easely survive 2-3 days.
i confirmed last night that the charge trick in magldr in usb storage does work to charge the battery.
I found that when my phone starts to get lower on battery that a reboot gives me more power due to the power meter being out.
Also a charge in an external charger helps.
sorry im trying to understand how can users see the MA off batery in battry tools , im trying to use the trick of change the camera mode to video mod and leave , they say the batery consume go to very low usage , like they say here but i cant find the "MA" in battery tools to compare .
this is what they say to do
"i start camera with green button and then switch to video mode there, wait for autofocus and after that just simple go out to main screen by pressing windows(middle) or back button then stanby current drops to 5-6 ma from regular 40-42 ma. (Switching to video is important - if not switched no results found)
It stays 5-6 ma on standby until next reboot. If i reboot and don't do this camera play current is 40-42 ma. But if i start camera -> switch to video -> out - current 5-6 ma.
After hack applied I used phone in different ways - talk internet email - standby still low 5-6 ma. I gave it 12 hours try - lost only about 12-13 % of charge. Checked battery outside of phone with load - real lose of charge was about same as Battery tool shows. Will continue to test longer but can expect at least few days with some usage of phone.
Did the same trick with my friend's phone - same results. It looks like really a bug some where.
Please report your results and HD2 type.
Was on XBmod 1.04, 12 radio, location on, data on, bluetooth on, xbox off, wifi off.
If this problem really exist it will be found in all ROMs.
P.S. Tested phone before with most others ROMs - found this one is the best, thanks for this ROM.
Hope this will be fixed permanently in NODO."

Yes you are right it is not show ma. Electrical current is measured in Ampers or MiliAmpers. So look for Battery Current minus when on battery, nothing(plus) when on charge. Do video trick send phone to sleep mait few minutes, then wake up and fast go to battery tool wait there - you will see. Most important is ROM type. They should be all same, but a lot of testing shows they are not the same(not big difference, but exist in standby consumption).
Want to add - if used proper ROM and this trick you won't need any external charger, because i doesn't give much(internaly battery charged very well - i did a lot of external experiments with battery charged in phone), no need to go any magldr because not help much and dengerous for battery. if you use pfone a lot you may need only charged(in or out) spare battery because it works continiously only 3-5 hours.

I'll try to play with camera modules this WE since they seems the same between HD2 and HD7. But like I've said the bug is certainly due to the flash driver or a dependency with the camera driver or pdd/mdd.
For the rest (Wi-Fi apart) there is a lot of differencies between users with the same rom. Tmous/HD2, revision number of the device, OP/ coutry (for gsm band) etc. all this count to what radio we use (HD2 and HD7 extracted) and some drivers may be not acurated.
The RIL parameters for your OP are important too beside the radio because how your phone reach the GSM network has an important impact on battery consumption.
There is a tool I dindn't know exist before and testing now which I like: WP BENCH.

Yes you are absolutly right - a lot of unknown things and differencies. It would be very good if you will be able to look closer at all this. I don't have tool, enough knowledge and actualy much time to do that. Thank you very much for your work and results!!!!!
Yes, it's true. It worked with the camera bug... Normally my battery would be empty. But now I only used a quarter of my battery life. Nice !!
Dismissing things like sync and widget updates, etc., which option do you think ultimately saves more battery life? On the one hand you have wifi constantly locked on even if the phone is in deep sleep for hours. On the other hand, if you find that you use the phone quite a bit in spurts, wouldn't it seem that the wifi constantly turning on and connecting, then turning off during sleep, would actually use more power than just being constantly connected?
It might be a bad analogy but I liken it to when you turn a car off and then on as it uses more fuel compared to just letting it idle for a few minutes instead. Would this be the same with power consumption on our phone?
I've seen many articles that indicate Wi-Fi is much better on battery life then using 3g. So I've been running my like that for awhile. Not sure about the results though. Wi-Fi is now my second biggest battery drain, behind Display.
Mine is set to stay ON always. I get better battery life when using wifi. Some say the opposite, try both ways and see which works best for you.

I have the policy set to sleep when off. Even when I do use my phone regularly, I find that at times its going to help you save more battery life without having wifi constantly scanning for access points.

Just up the scan interval.
Standby drain of our wifi chip is VERY low, less than 1/10 that of the original GalaxyS series if power_profile.xml is correct - and it's FAR more power efficient to transfer data over wifi than cell radio on our phones for a variety of reasons.
what are others thoughts on some of the pros and cons of this update? i'm thinking it will actually save battery to have wifi 'always on' in standby mode rather than repeatedly switching between a on/off state which uses more energy.
It will definitely eat more battery if it's always on under the lockscreen...
Also there is an option to deactivate notifications when new wifi hotspots are around.. if you are about battery life you should deactivate this..

I keep my Wifi always on because it consumes the least battery (vs 3G, LTE, etc).
If I don't play games on my Lumia 920 the battery can last 3 days.
This update is freezing my phone Dunno why but I have tested it. I occasionally get a freeze now and then, but when the keep wifi is on, it is like every couple of hrs... Will test it more though.

Wrong unless your phone is using 5-year old wifi chip.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is the wifi on this phone an on demand type system? From what I see on mine, the wifi unless being used for an actual update or downloading other content goes to sleep when the lock screen is on. It then wakes up if there is an update pushed to it or if something else needs it or of course if you unlock the phone. At least that is the way it appears that mine works.
Also your radio service are going to use much more power than the wifi will as they are higher power transmitters and receivers. There is a reason wifi only works within a few hundred feet and radio works for several miles that is due to the power difference. Of course with more power you get more battery consumption.
In the case of conserving the battery you are better off to use wifi when possible, leave it on and let the phone control it.
In my experience keeping Wifi on permanently lead to a remarkable decrease in battery life. That will depend on where you are though. If I have it sitting at home where it has Wifi connectivity it's likely that I would see better battery life because all actual transfers will happen via Wifi. At work though it can't connect to the Wifi network (private phone, work network) and so I have 3G running anyway while the phone keeps looking for Wifi networks to connect to.
The problem boils down to the fact that while you can switch off Wifi completely because everything can still work using 3G you can't switch off the phone part completely because only data is done over Wifi but you still need the mobile connection to receive calls/SMS.
I would suggest to anyone to simply try out what works better for them. For me it worked best to let Wifi deactivate automatically as it had been the default in WP since WP7 came out.

Maybe Wifi is using less power when you are downloading something and need a lot of data... But when your phone is idle... Constant on Wifi is using far more battery power than 3G that checks for email or weather every 1-2 hours...
Simple enough...if you are consistently in an area with a WiFi signal, leave WiFi "always on"...it will consume less battery. If you're in an area without WiFi signal then turn it off, as searching for a signal will help run your battery down.

Again, simply not true unless you are using a 5-year old phone. Even if you are in an area that has no wifi connection, the extra drain caused by searching for Wi-Fi networks is minimum in a modern OS and modern chipset. I have left all my android phones (the ones that offer Wi-Fi always on feature for a few years now) wifi on all the time. Never have felt much difference vs if I turn wifi off. It annoys me that WP didn't offer this capability for so long.

I tested a lot of phones Android and WP, my experience is that wifi always on is a battery killer... And I'm talking about state of the art hardware... It's just my 2 cent's but i keep it off...
When I don't charge overnight and wifi is always on my battery drops about 40%
with only 3G on about 8-10%
Foxbat: you can leave it any way you want to do it. I'm not saying Microsoft should remove the feature. But in my experience keeping Wifi on kills the battery faster. I tested it for my use case with always on and with Auto and in the end: Auto it was for me.
The best advice you can give to people is: try it out yourself and you will see what works best for you.
A picture or two says it all. See the attached files for my two testing: one with wifi always on for 24-hour and one with Wi-Fi in auto mode for 24-hour:
The right picture shows 0.0%/hour under current discharge rate... pretty impressive

The keyword is 'Current' -- means at that moment. You can derive the same thing from the left in various sections. The key here is that I don't see any discernible difference. Certainly not a battery killer in any sense as you claimed.
If you look at the first 12-hour period of both chart (when the phone is mostly sleep and not used), the result is almost identical. FYI, there are three push emails connected all the time: Hotmail, GMail and Corporate Exchange Email.
Yes the keyword 'Current' -- means at that moment... so your phone is not discharging although your screen is on... Very accurate app...

So, what you saying is that if you have the screen on, you will see your battery percentage drop immediately? You should return your phone if that is the case.
Battery app get its information from the phone OS reporting. If the OS reported the same battery percentage over a short period of time, the discharge rate won't be anything other than zero. That's limitation of the platform, not app.
Instead of criticize the app which is not the point of the post, why don't you post your findings where leave Wi-Fi always on kills your battery?
it' % per hour... and your phone is using currently using 0,0% per hour so if you leave it like that it will run for ever... so where is the mistake?

% per hour is a unit of measurement. It doesn't mean you have to take one hour to measure it in order to claim its rate. That will be average rate on that hour, not current rate which is meant to see what your current usage pattern is. It can't be used to predict your battery life. If you notice that when you take your phone off the charger, it will stay on 100% for quite some time before it starts to drop. Does that mean your phone battery can last forever? Think about it before post these ridiculous statements.
Foxbat - you are trying to tell us how our devices should behave while we are telling you how they actually behave in the real world out there. You can repeat your 5 years story as often as you want to but it clearly doesn't live up to the factual reality we experience every day and I guess after trying it out with different ROMs on the 920 and leaving all other settings the same I know the effect it had pretty well.
Nice to know though that you are having a different experience with different devices.
