This question is related to the bootloader problem & the upcoming 2.1 update....Could SE change the way the bootloader works and negate the progress you've made?

since its not yet cracked ...i dont think SE will change the bootloader ...
i am not a dev .. this is what i think... but may be the new 2.1 needs a new bootlaoder ... so anything can happen .. but dev are keeping an eye on SE will loads its stock rom.. that way we can find ways to use to crack bootloader

One click root method, you literally have to install the .apk then click root. After you remove the programs you don't want, then click unroot. Doesn't get much easier than that
IS this one click method universal or specific from phone to phone? i am asking for my X8. There isn't a thread about this phone yet and because it is part of the same model group i'm asking here.

I downloaded the rom manager from the market but it doesnt support the X10. How do i got about loading a rom onto it now?

Oh so its only the Xperia X10 that people are having an issue with changing the bootloader?
- install titanium back up and uninstall apps that you dont need
- install barnicle wifi for wifi tether
or
- unroot and enjoy what you have because honestly, people who rooted but has no idea what to do with root shouldn't bother to root their phones, it's harsh but sadly true
the question is : What was the goal of your rooting operation ?
changing the ROM ? (have you search informations before you begin this operation ?)
Root access provide you many usefull operatons, changing theme, cleaning unused apps, use some apps who need root...
It theses operations are not needed for you, root is not necessary for you....

I don't think so...locking the bootloader sadly is becoming the norm...with motorola goining the same way...agreed sony has a reputation giving hackers the hardest time...but progress has been made...and we will see cuatom roms

I'd like to know this as well (especially so since SE warns on their site that unlocking the bootloader of the minis (pro and regular) is unsafe and can lead to bricking if you accept an OTA update)

a search for "fxp fota unbrick" didn't turn up much sorry. Can you be a bit more precise? (since I'm really interested in running stock Xperia ROM and would like to have the upgrades when they come in)

Root is safe as you read carefully the tutos and respect it. Should be warned about consequences too (have to unlock BL, NO FOTA,...)

I have a Sony Live Walkman that I bought without any phone company in between. (Sorry my English doesn't help, don't know the exact term for that).
I checked, and it says that it is allowed to unlock bootloader.
But my question is, what is the benefit in my case? I don't have any garbage from any company loaded on my phone, the loader image is from Sony.
I can't grasp really well why is there the need to unlock bootloader. I'm new to Sony, I just had a LG - and the only concern was to ROOT and nothing else.
My Sony is rooted already. Do I need to unlock bootloader? (I'm just repeating myself a lot, lol) - and let's supossed I do unlock it: what happens? what new things I can/cannot do/break/etc?

Unlocking bootloader lets you install custom kernels and ROMs. If you do it via official way, you lose your guarantee and your DRM keys, that means you will not be able to use TrackID and some other little features. If you patch it via unofficial way (test point method) you lose nothing. Anyway, if you don't intend to change your ROM, don't unlock it

I don't plan to install any custom ROM, but would like to try some new Kernel - and I believe I have to unlock bootloader for that?
I managed to root without unlock it, I wish I could flash a new kernel the same way
Unfortunately, you can't flash custom kernels without unlocking the bootloader. Check THIS thread, you'll find useful information
Well the unofficial way will allow you to keep your drm information and you will be able to keep using the track id app. here is a video of the method you need to follow to unlock it the unofficial way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgYAZoqsk9E, the video it's from fast gsm but it is the basic procedure of the test point method the only difference it's the software you will use and of course that it is free.

any method will let you flash a custom kernel the only difference is that using the official method you will lose your drm (digital rights management) for protected music, the usage of the track id app and any way of officially update your phone (over the air, ppc or sus) and using the unofficial way (test point method) you will keep the drm, track id and you will be able to update your phone using ppc or sus.

Well, I been finally reading about this unlocking booloader stuff.
The so called " via unofficial way (test point method)" looks very complicated, like I could really break something. I mean, wires? Needles?
I think I will go for the official way., even if i don't like the idea.
Did official method also.
It is much more simple, just on the computer.
You will loose the track id feature, never used it anyway.

i think u wish to install custom kernel right?? but not custom rom!! most of the custom kernels support only custom roms only few support stock.
well at the end it's up to you but the test point it's not really that complicated i did it with a paperclip jejeje

The test one, I tried, but could understand the dynamics with the program, and got lost.
Te official one, couldn't follow the instruccione given on the Sony site. All those commands (fastload.exe bla bla bla) didn't work, and the Pc never asked for any driver.
I only hope someone could upload a guide step by step, that would be wonderful.
The guys that did the step by step for rooting ICS was just genius - if he could only do this too....

Link2sd is a big one for me as the memory on a mini is pretty low and you dont have to worry any more with this installed also as above you can get rid of all the bloat.
I also had an overheating problem and a fix was on here very quickly but needed root for it to work (no problems since )
Also if you generally like to play with stuff and try things new root is needed to really get to grips with the help on here.
I got ics from here before it was available for my area also.
Finally its FUN just follow the instructions to the letter and if your not sure dont do it.

With rooting, you will get access to many useful tools for android otherwise can't be used.
For starter, people above me have mentioned before have mentioned some useful apps that can be used in root-only hh.
Titanium Backup is an indispensable apps for your phone to ensure your apps and crucial data inside it won't gone. It can be used to remove useless bloatware, as well
Personally, i use ProxyDroid to bypass the proxy on my campus. Note that unrooted phone has no way to set global proxy.
Of course, rooting will give you access to abundant Custom Rom in the development forum. What is the benefit, you ask?
First, you don't need to stuck to Sony-made UI if you don't like it. I believe someone will say to just install third party apps to make up for it, but you can't just replace the entire UI with it.
Second, you can control the performance of your phone. It is the so called undervolt and overclock stufs. Playing with this, you can determine how the phone play, the way you like it, whether you make it gaming powerhouse (in the cost of battery and overall hardware) or just make it use lesser battery.

Its a choice. But it's such a weird question i think. Maybe its not the benefit. But by rooting your phone, you can customize your original OS. there are many Phone's OSs (ROMs) developed by our friends. Its customized, there are things thats not include in the ori OS. Or maybe you want an app that's not coming for your phone's version, but available in other phone, you can get that by install it yourself.
BUT becarefull when you decide to try to root your phone. And you must be patient, dont give quickly when you failed

I think you can simplify the questions by asking yourself whether you think you are someone who likes to tinker with their phone and get under the hood a little, or whether you are generally happy with how it's working now and merely curious what all the fuss is about?
You may conclude from either question that rooting is worth a try. It's probably a good idea to have at least a good reason to (such as wanting to install a root-only app like AdAway or having a custom recovery like TeamWin or ClockWork Mod for backups and such, or for installing one of the cool ROMs we have available in these forums).
I was apprehensive the first time I rooted, but now I can't imagine running my phone without it. Especially thanks to the custom ROMs we have here and the many mods and apps that require root/busybox/init.d etc to run. That said, I wouldn't advise rooting to someone else unless they were comfortable with the notion that they might not be covered under warranty anymore, and would have to rely on their own and this community to deal with any problems they might encounter. You can get your phone back to stock ROM and unrooted, with a locked bootloader but I believe it will still indicate at the bootloader that you 'relocked' it, so your provider can tell that it was tampered with and may decide that that's a good enough reason not to honor your warranty. Proceed at your own risk.
As far as the details, no it's not very difficult to root your phone. You need to be marginally competent at running some software on your PC and follow the tutorials available here. There's this tool which makes things very easy, and there's also nloooo's tutorial here if you want to do it more manually which is helpful in learning some of the basics of using adb commands and getting your PC to talk to your phone, etc.
If you follow the instructions in the tutorials you shouldn't brick your phone. You just need to be mindful of what you are doing and don't do silly things like pull the USB cable while it's sending files to your phone. Even then, there's usually ways to recover from those situations. It's hard to actually brick the phone.
Backup your phone, often!

Sixaxis - to play games with ps3 controller
BetterBatteryStats - to check what prevents deep sleep such as alarms etc
Titanium backup - to backup my stuff just incase something happening to my phone
That's it. If you don't need this I don't think you need to root at all.

Exactly, I rooted every phone I had except this one. I don't have money for a new one and I'm completely satisfied of the function and look (changed everything what I can without root) so it's only up to you if you want a new Rom or root based apps..

Depends on how you bricked it. And if you can flash a recovery.img or RUU, it's not a real brick.
But about the rooting:
I've rooted every device I owned + lots of other devices. It's surely worth it. ROMs make the device so much smoother, and when using atis112's kernel, you'll get the most out of your device. It also removes bloatware, and allows full theming. I don't see any problem with it, except the OTA's. But that's not that hard, you can flash the stock recovery/RUU, and you'll get them back.
In my experience, there's a really small chance of bricking your phone.It's a safe method.

I own Desire X.
May be i am very late in replying but i ll try to answer some of ur questions.
I am new to rooting scene so in case of any wrong information, please correct me.
I will share my experience.
I rooted the phone coz i wanted access to limit my startup items. In addition, rooted phone can give u access to ur device completely.
Tutorial made by nloooo is awesome, otherwise its better you follow the tutorial specifically made by the developer of the product.
TWRP recovery is cool and serves the purpose.
I tried Elegencia ROM and now i am using mySENSE-dx_RC3.0. I really hate all the bloatware in my phone which is te main reason for installing ROM.
Going back to custom ROM is easy (i think), for that u need to have a full backup of ur system in TWRP.
Going to ctock ROM is a bit difficult using RUU as stock ROM in RUU need compatible CID of your phone.
Both these ROMs i mentioned above are are awesome and u can choose any one depending on ur needs. Advantages of Elegencia are that you can choose which software to install through aroma installer while installing ROM. Its light, flawless and cool.
Why i chose mySENSE-dx_RC3.0 is that i really loved Full Sense as compared ti sense lite in stock as well as Elegencia ROM.
