[Q] keeping unlocked phone unlocked - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an unlocked vibrant. I have flashed many of eugene's roms and so far it remains unlocked. Since I see that the OTA update from TMobile can relock, the phone, what should I do to make sure I don't accidentally lock the phone in the future. I don't have the code used to unlock the phone originally and don't live in the U.S. which would make returning the phone to TMobile difficult.
So how can make sure it stays unlocked or backup the unlocked state in case I accidentally lock it in the future?

Unlock code was stored inside your phone. There's a way to get it,free of charge. You should read the bible for more information

Thread moved to Q&A...post in the right section!!!

First off I would root the phone and make a backup of the files in /efs which is where the nv_data.bin resides. I just used root explorer to zip up that entire directory in case I need those files in the future because nv_data.bin contains the unlock code.
Either download the app from the market that gives you the code or copy nv_data.bin to the sdcard so you can copy it to your pc. Once on your pc you can run the sgux.exe utility and get the unlock and unfreeze codes. Like others have said, do a search on this process. It's well documented on the forum.

[Q] Beginner need HELP, how to write files in to efs folder?

Hi, I am new this forum and new to using a smart phone, I have my vibrant(used) for about a week now. I try to unlock it for ATT. I read through several dozens threads on this forum about unlocking the vibrant phone. I got all the necessary software install on to the pc(atleast i think so) such as sdk, java, adb, generate unlock window, etc, i also install root and superuser on to the phone. THE PROBLEM IS my orginal IMEI has change after using some unknown unlock software to unlock the phone, it ended up changing my IMEI, it stated my IMEI was change after it was done (now i learn my lesson of not to use untrusted software for phone). I try to do a factory data reset which didn't work.
How do I copy my backup efs folder into my vibrant efs folder?
I try to mv it through adb shell but it stated "read only", show how do move/copy/write my original efs folder files in to the one on the phone ?
And the reason I used a unknown unlock software is because all your methods on the forum did not work for me. Generate unlock window did not work for me, and I try one of the other users method of copying bml3 files and execute it with sgux on window cmd, but I had problem with copying bml3. It stated read only.
Can anyone help me with the command to be able to write my backup efs folder in to the phone efs folder? And help me unlock it too?
Check over in captivate development forum. Good threads there on restoring /efs files.

[Q] need help efs nv_data.bin not found samsung vibrant

hello i need help i´ve been trying to unblock my samsung vibrant but i cant find efs folder or nv_data.bin. what can i do. I don´t have a copy of this files i´m desesperate please help
Do you have root access and root explorer?
on the market look up galaxy S unlock. Not All vibrants had the nv_data file or whatever it is that allowed them to be unlocked in that way If I remember correctly. Galaxy S unlock has a generic unlock method for the Vibrants affected by this. I used it, it seemed to work. dunno, since I haven't tested it on any other SIM cards, but it did backup /efs to the SD card and create the files as it said it would.
Its worth a shot, and comes with a way to revert back if issues occur. Be sure to follow instructions, Don't delete the files it creates on the SD until you test everything out and make sure you have no issues. This way you can revert back using the backup.
same here
I try to get an unlock code using generate unlock window but after I ran it, it show error unable to find file <nv_data.bin>
Do I have to root it first b4 i can unlock it? please help.
thank you
Hello I seem to have the same issue...
I have rooted the phone, I have a file manager to browse my in-phone folders..
I went in the efs folder it says: "the folder is empty or have been banned. not the retrieved information"
I have also been trying to unlock the phone.. (i9000) I have tried all the ways that are on the xda developers and have finally tried to do it the manual way...
But I am stuck at transferring the nv_data.bin file...
Please help out!
Thanks
Im having the same issue. Been looking for an answer for hours and no luck. Im dying to use this phone...

Hello, The reason that you can not find the folder EFS it is because it is hidden. You can install Android Terminal Emulator from market
And then run it and write the command to see all the folder
ls -l
You will see the EFS folder.
Please let me know if it works for you
samsung advance sin imei ni nv_data.bin

what can i do in this case!?

Where do I find the NV_DATA.BIN file in my S2?

Hello everyone. I need help locating the NV_DATA.BIN file in my Bell locked Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I1900M). I just purchased this phone and would like to unlock it with Grooby's unlock tool but after spending an hour searching everywhere I cant seem to locate this file. I did find the efs folder but its empty inside. My S2 does not have an external SD card. I have two programs running which I used to search for the file, ES File Explorer and File Expert.
Any help would be appreciated as I am traveling soon and need it unlocked. So frustrating being a noob when Ive used an iphone from day one and now just want to try something else.
If your phone isn't rooted, you're not finding the files. That's by design. Imagine if everyday users were able to delete those files. Lots of borked phones with no/generic IMEI's.
If your phone is rooted, it's in /efs.
Edit to add - Which I guess will lead to the next question. How to root your phone in this thread.

I have an i9100p with nfc. U will loose the nfc but you can flash it back on any rom as far as i know. There is a nfc zip for ics and gb.
read this thread, this should be in the Q.and A
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455831&highlight=9100p
This is now sorted.
(download Samsung Network/Sim Unlock Code Generator/Patcher (SGS1/2/3) ) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360174 )
(download superonclick - http://shortfuse.org/?page_id=2 )
extract to your desktop or somewhere you will remember
1. root with superonclick
2. install rootexplorer (or any root access file explorer)
3. copy nv_data.bin from \efs folder to root of memory card.
4. enable usb access so you can see files on memory card on your pc.
5. copy nv_data.bin to a location you will remember
6. run SamsungUnlocker and browse to your original nv_data.bin
7. select samsung galaxy s2
8. click "generate unlock code" IF your lucky you will get the code on-screen, if not you will be prompted to generate a nv_data.bin that has the unlock already applied, save this to a location you will remember (i made a folder called "PATCHED" and put it in there)
9. copy the folder you created called "PATCHED" back to your memory card.
10. dissable usb access.
11. open root explorer and goto your memory card -> "PATCHED" folder. select nv_data.bin anc copy it back to your \efs folder and replace the original.
12. reboot phone. unlock should be done.
if this has not worked, check that there is only 1 nv_data.bin (mine had nv_data (copy).bin. check the date and time to make sure the nv_data.bin is the new one you just copied in, if not, rename the original nv_data.bin to nv_data (orig).bin, then rename the new one nv_data (copy).bin, back to nv_data.bin, reboot and all should be good.
Hope this is of some help, if not give me a should and i`ll be glad to try and help.
ALL THANKS FOR THIS UNLOCK GOTO THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPER OF THE SamsungUnlocker APP

Dude, this is a dev forum not a n00b help desk.
Post topics in General or Q&A after using search, do not post this in dev forum, its for roms/kernels/mods/reference only!
download galaxy s unlock from play store n it will do the needful ..but from next time plz ask questions in Q&A section!!
P.S. I have done it myself on I9100P which m using currently and dnt forget to backup ur efs first..

[Q] Has anyone managed to install new Google Now/Search without root?

Not sure if it's possible, but it's the only thing I'm looking to be able to do with my phone right now since I can't root ( HBoot 1.15 problem ).
Could the manual steps outlined HERE work if I'm using a stock phone with now unlock or root? It just seems like there's no need for root with any of these steps, maybe I'm wrong?
Steps:
Manual:
Download The Google Now Apk. [Link below]
Open up Root Explorer and go to your downloaded apk.
Rename the apk to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
Now go to [System - App] mount R/O and rename "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk" to "GoogleBackUp.bak"
Now copy the downloaded apk [The one you renamed to "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"] to [System - App]
Reboot

Why can't you root?
You can still root with the new HBOOT, you just can't get S-OFF, which is not the same thing. And those instructions you quoted won't work without root since Root Explorer requires root.
Yes sorry rather then ask I should have told them that. Use HTC dev unlock, fastboot flasg recovery and then flash root installer. My guide doesn't have any tutorials but it explains just about everything you should know about your phone, its worth a read. I explain soff, HTC dev unlock, recovery, ROM, radios, you name it and I probably already added it. I even have very specific troubleshooting scenarios and I explain the cause (and solution for the harder problems)
I don't want to HTCDev unlock. I'll wait for S-Off for 1.15. I can access the root of my device over this program on my computer without being rooted... Just figured I'd ask.
Root access and accessing the root of your phone are not the same thing. Also for this particular phone, the internal memory is considered the internal SD card, this is not the root filesystem. HTC just uses a screwy workaround. You can unlock and root or remove root relock and restore to stock at anytime and you can do most of what's possible with soff there's no reason to not do so even if waiting for soff
Hmm root some how slipped my mind, I guess I'm off to add an explanation of superuser permissions to my guide

yes but you cant copy with out root.
You have to root. And I'd suggest dev unlocking now anyway. You can always soff later if it's found
