I lose phones... habitually. Sometimes they find their way back to me and sometimes they don't, It is unsettling to me that even if I have a security app installed, or a GPS tracker that anyone with the ability to perform a google search can simply factory wipe my phone and make it their own.
So the question: Is it possible to include a password requirement to access the bootloader or recovery? I realize that if you forget your password there would likely be no way to save your phone in the event you need to, but I don't forget my passwords so this does not affect me.
Just wondering if this is even possible or worthwhile. Any input will be appreciated.
I opened a similar thread. It is possible to do however it seems people just don't care about the security risk.

Surely this must be a concern to people. It certainly is for me.

i also wondering about this.

We need it!
-1 this is pointless. someone could just go into download mode or fastboot and reflash the recovery.
What we're looking for is a password protected bootloader which will require password for booting into recovery or using download mode or fastboot.

Good luck as it would need to boot before anything else and we can see the issues with this. There will never be a fool proof way to lock your phone if lost. It will be as simple as loading up the bootloader and flash a stock rom which will wipe the recovery.
No there is not alot of interest in this as to be honest if the info you have on your phone is that important then its simple. Don't loose your phone.

Perhaps you think I'm talking about an app. No, I'm talking about a modified bootloader.
I read somewhere that samsung galaxy s have that option..
+1
a bootloader with password setting is one of the few things i'm missing.

We either need a password protected bootloader + CWM.
Or fulldisk encryption a la Whispercore.
I absolutely HATE the insecure concept of Android. Android is for kids and nerds. But not for serious people.

if it is not being made, I'll look into it myself

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering about this. I'm sure it would have been done if it was possible by now. Nqmobile + gotta! App is almost good enough for me, but a password protected bootloader would be a sick addition
+I
It is one of the questions bothering me for last few months.
I like all those sec. apps - but Android Lost, Call Back, TouchMyLife nor Avast! Lost will not be able to save me if someone will boot straight into CWM and flash it with whatever just to get rid of the "FindIt" stuff.
cool
i too would like to see a passworded bootloader, or even a passworded version of CWM.
Think about it: how many regular joes on the street know how to flash a phone, or put it into download mode. Im a samsung guy, i know how to put it into download mode. My buddy is an iPhone guy, he wouldnt know the first place to start. An HTC guy might know how to deal with a few HTC devices, but in reality a handfull of people who MIGHT find your phone MIGHT know how to thwart that sort of 'security'.
From a lost phone aspect: Samsung dive is impressive. Found my phone location to within a few houses. with GPS and Wifi off. as long as the phone has battery life and is turned on, i can find it. Unless someone wipes it. which takes my password. Or boots into CWM and wipes it that way.... which currently does not need a password. or uts it into download mode and flashes a new firmware, which knowing my phone is just asking for issues. In reality, i want someone to boot my phone and have to have it on in the state that i lose it and NOT reset it. That yeilds the highest possibility of me finding it again.
So yes, i realize that any security we put on here could be thwarted somehow, but by who? how much time and effort are they going to put into it aside from trying a reset and it fails, trying to reboot into recovery, passworded protected, turn it off and sell it on the street, when the next guy turns it on with their sim card (texts my google account the new number) and now i can get his name and address
what are the chances the guy who finds my phone is going to have a computer handy and know exactly how to flash the phone? Not high.
Definately +1 for passworded protected CWM.
Huge chances. Anytime, everywhere.
You don't need to know anything, apart from taking battery off.
And placing back when you got tools ready. This simply means, lost phone will never again boot into normal android os. Never.

So I found a GSII on the train today, Nobody to been seen so I picked it up and took it with me, Got home to discover a lock screen, No smudges on the screen to guess the lock. Look at the SD Card there's a few images of a kid and some toys but that is all, Im guess everything else is on the internal memory.
Anyway to unlock this device and get any info to contact the owner, Tried the networks, they said it has not been reported as lost or stolen.
Not the kind of guy to keep this. I have a Galaxy Nexus
Could you try to set your phone like it doesn't ask for pin and then insert the sim card from that sgs2 to look for numbers like mom

Wow, that's quite polite of you.
You're the reason I keep an "Owner's Info" message on my lockscreen (and other people are the reason that I use a 9-digit PIN).
I commend you for your honesty, but unfortunately I can't provide assistance.
It could have been stolen, which would explain the absence of a SIM. Maybe the previous 'owner' couldn't do anything with it either and gave up.
You might be able to flash a new ROM, but everything would be deleted...and you'd still not have the owner's info.
Good luck, sir and thank you for your honesty!
No phone numbers??? Try syncing with google... see if there are any email addresses or ANYTHING on the phone... Very honest though hats off...
I once found a phone like you did but found loads of pics of him cheating on his wife :S there was a message with HER address on so I delivered it.... I wonder what did happen to them lol

For something like this I'd exhaust all possibilities to find the owner personally first, otherwise the Lost 'n Found will "lose" it, even PD's "lose" stuff. The owner is lucky that someone whom doesn't want to keep it, or sell it, has found it.
Edit: although without a sim card it's probably a drug mule's phone and you should bring a gun to the meet just in case.
Done a factory reset, Which says it will wipe data. It failed, Now I can look at teh pictures and try figure out who they are. More childrens movies on the internal stornage
Woah, how kind of you wanting to return the phone.. Only one thing comes to my mind - all phones should be trackable by their IMEI - perhaps try flashing a full wipe base ROM via ODIN (maybe pulling all the data you can thru adb first?), and perhaps try contacting samsung officials in your country about a found phone?? That is if the guy was fortunate enough to create a samsung account or something that could identify him..
EDIT: Okay I found a thread, perhaps you can try running an ADB command like this to get the contacts database??
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rescue-squad/30987-acquire-contacts-via-adb.html
Pulling the contacts database is good but if adb wasn't already enabled you would have to root it with cf-root then boot into recovery and run the adb commands from it since adb is enabled in recovery by default *may have to mount data partition*
Pin is stored in the EFS folder, and no factory reset or firmware flash will touch that. Messing with EFS can have dire consequences if corrupted (no IMEI = no network connection).
But if no choice, take a look at Hellcatdroid's solution with
ADB here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476634
Edit as previous poster, maybe even flash a Chainfire CF-Root kernel, and then boot into CWM recovery. Mount partitions, and use windows program "Android Commander" to file explore any system partition for more info. The EFS could backed upped and even deleted. But risks outlined earlier.

Hello guys,
I know that it is probably the best place to share my issue. I have an HTC Leo (HD2) with dorimanx ROM. I have been using it for 6 months already (with Android). Yesterday, while my phone was charging, I have noticed some suspicious activity, my phone was bugging and freezing, didn't want to run applications, was very slow. Then it just froze up and I've done a battery pull. I thought there is something wrong with my phone. But, I have been mistaken. After an hour, my phone was still charging & was lying on the table next week while I was on computer. It just unlocked itself, then went to youtube, launched some video, went to related, comments, then launched another video. My phone was using mobile 3g network. then it went & turned on wifi, there was no available wifi spots. after that it went to cpu tuner, changing the min and max frequencies at the same time, I mean holding both scrolls of min and max freq and lowing them. For example, I can hold both min and max scrolls changing them, only one by one. After that it tried to add a new google account. Then I have just turned off my device again with battery pull. So, as for now I am not using any internet and my device is not getting messed up, at least, I have not noticed. I have erased all history and cookies in the browser. I have a 2 step verification on google, which is linked to this phone. I don't know what's happening. PLEASE HELP ME GUYS, I have though ab factory reset. How can I make it without reinstalling the dorimanx ROM itself. Waiting for your replies and advices, as I AM REALLY FREAKED UP! Thank you ALL!:silly::silly::silly::silly:

Your neighbors, or your friends, They will always stay by your side.
I am actually using CyanogenMod 7, dorimanx ROM. I have reflashed my device a couple of times, but never done factory reset. What will happen after factory reset? Will I keep my ROM configuration, will all my apps be erased? Cauze when it comes to reflashing - it is really difficult, I again to read all the posts, create SWAP and many many things, that I don't want to do again. This ROM was working perfectly till that sh*t happened yesterday.

You have a ghost in your house!
But nah, Did u have bluetooth on?
I'd be willing to bet its the charger. I've heard of this happening before and it was a faulty USB cord/port. Try a different cord if you can and see if the problem persists. I know it sounds crazy but I've heard the exact same issue before and that was the problem. There is no such "hack" sophisticated enough to control your phone like that.

Ive had this issue before. I got it working by pulling the battery, plugging in the charger with the device off, putting the battery back in, and then booting into recovery by holding down the correct buttons.

Lol, if you're serious, the perfect solution would be to flash a stock firmware over the existing one.

First off, what's hacked and how do you know you've been hacked? Then you have to find out how they hacked you. Was it thru an app? Thru Wi-Fi? Did you login on a false webpage like the common Facebook hack?
If you believe you've been hacked change ALL your passwords to EVERYthing. Even Wi-Fi passwords. Make sure you do it from a different device or pc. preferably using https. Then wipe everything possible. Internal, external storage, cookies etc.....

Obvious Troll. Close thread.

He might be saying "I have a phone with a lockscreen password I don't know (because it isnt mine) and I want to completely erase everything so I can have a fresh phone".
440 I don't think everyone is a crook but I can usually spot a red herring from a long distance.

Ref 440 - I applaud your faith in your fellow man. That is rare in today's post-naiveté world, and should be treasured. But as far as this story goes, either incredibly incompetence or lying is involved... But NOT hacking. Just not consistent. Hacking can sometimes be hard to spot, and then only through exhaustive analysis. If the OP's story is even half true I suspect the case really involves some really dumb action that does NOT involve hacking.
But frankly, I got bigger problems. After the upgrade to stock 4.1.2 I'm getting a series of "No SIM card" errors, even after a SIM replacement. Now going to Google....
The way many have overcome the no sim card error has been to return the phone to stock ICS and the modem to the LF6, then go on to the rom, kernel, and modem of choice.
Using the emergancy firmware installation option of Kies has also been used.

Hacked seriously doubt it ... give me all your accounts and passwords and i can fix this lol
