I attempted to reapply the allblack 1.1 theme after applying the OTA update (via ODIN) found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768805&page=9
it caused so many FC's i couldn't access the menus or anything. the phone was unresponsive, just kept force closing.
i thought i should attempt to reapply the update via odin again but it hung during the update. debugging mode was enabled bc it needed to be to apply the theme, but i couldn't turn it off after all the FC's.
after it froze during the update forever, i turn it off and attempted to redo it.
now all i get is an image of a phone, an exclamation point and a pc.
Can someone please help? i think i bricked it.
edit: i got it back into download mode...going to try Odin and the ota update again...
it just hangs at cache.rfs....
edit 2: after several attempts with odin it finally went through. problem solved.

long story short. I tried to flash a newer updated copy of SuperSU or whatever to get root back after updating to 4.0.4 earlier this week.
Once I did that I was able to get back into the operating system and run Root Checker. Everything passed. I then tried WiFi tether and it kind of locked up on me for a bit. then I was able to stop it and exit out of it. I Force closed the programs. Life was good.
For whatever reason I restarted the tablet. once I did that I was stuck on the Samsung screen for at least 15 minutes.
I then tried to re-run root file and then the new updated SuperSU. Then everything went all to hell.
Then I get a message that says
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode from Kies & try again."
Now I can not boot into anything but recovery...
I am able to with that message on the screen, connect to Odin and proceed to run the "factory" restore. However it has been sitting at what I would assume is about 5% or so for a long time. at least 20-30 minutes. Should this take this long?
And is there anything else I can do to do a restore? I am fairly new to this tablet and I use it for work and of course I have a super full day of work tomorrow and really got to get this thing back up and going.
Here is the story so far. I rooted my phone and got a little carefree with Titanium back up and uninstalled some essential gapps. I was able to get into download mode and am using LGNPST to restore my device to factory settings. The issue is I keep running into is I am getting stuck at 85%, which I know is a common error point in the LGNPST process. I turn the phone off and power it back on while keeping the phone plugged in and the phone reboots. After a few minutes I finally get an error message saying the following
Process:Upgrade_Masterbin
SubProc: Masterbin Download
Cause: Error: Fail opening port
Any kind of help would be much appreciated
Thanks!
Desconect the phone and do a hard reset.
Alright that seemed to get my farther. After a hard reset I was able to catch a glimpse of the phone setup before the phone immediately shut off. I am going to try and re install stock firmware through LGNPST again to see if this will work finally. Thanks!
Instal the 11c update anf root with the universal root.
So here's the story. I'm kind of terrified right now that my phone might be a goner. So, I was wanting to apply the new update to my galaxy but everytime I tried it would say "error" and wouldn't work. So I removed my root via superSU hoping that might help, with no success. So the nice people on this forum were directing me to flash a stock rom through odin to my phone. I kept trying and trying and my phone would never get recognized by odin so nothing would happen. I tried everything that I could read online to fix it and it never did. So I just decided that I would boot to recovery and do a clean wipe of my phone after I back it up. well the backup didn't work, so I just took my SD card out since it had most of the stuff I wanted to keep. I tried the clean wipe and it was done really quickly. I started up the phone and after I selected my language it said the setup wizard was stopped. Since then, I can't get the phone to boot correctly. It gets past the verizon splash screen(after a way longer wait than normal) and says "com.samsung.(something) has stopped working" and then just reboots itself. It'l almost stuck in this endless cycle. Can anyone help me out? If not, just give me the bad news straight up, do I need to trash this phone? Did I successfully kill it on accident?

Restoring this is going to be fairly easy once you get ODIN working.
First, make sure that Kies isn't running. Kies and ODIN will conflict with each other.
Normally issues with ODIN are fixed by ensuring that the cable is good, trying different USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
If nothing works and you can't get ODIN to work, you might be able to use the Verizon Recovery Assistant or Kies to restore your phone to factory.

I'm going to try it on another computer. Hopefully it'll work!

This seems to have worked! Thank you so much for your suggestion, you really made my whole week now. I seriously appreciate it!
I have the latest KitKat version and had failed to root my phone. I accidentally selected the update popup when I booted up the phone today. I immediately shutdown the phone and pulled the battery (for 10 minutes) to try and stop the update, but on reboot found that the download process was continuing. I again shut the phone down and pulled the battery. Is there anyway I can stop the update from taking place and retain KitKat and finally root the phone?
I cant find any threads which seem to help.
I have turned off mobile data to stop the download. If I do a factory reset will it stop this down load from finishing and allow me to stay with NK1 and root the phone?
Any help is much appreciated.
Any help out there please. If the answer is in the forums I can't seem to find it.
No idea if this will work, download towel root v3 to your comp, turn on your phone, immediately turn on airplane mode, transfer TR to your phone, root phone, after it restarts, using a file browser (es file browser), go to (i think) /cache, find the update and delete it
Thanks @rrrrrrredbelly, had to go back to NC5 using muniz_ri's instructions before TR would work. Then I froze SDM with TB and all seems good now. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer and get me thinking in the right direction.
So I have a S4 i9545 for Verizon. It was on 4.2.2 rooted and I upgraded using Fireflash with I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip. Everything seemed fine so I was using Titanium back up to remove the bloatware and then my battery died. When I charged it and booted up it got to the Verizon screen and hung there. I reset and tried several more times. I tried to use odin and flash a stock ROM SCH-I545_VZW_1_20140330160240_yni63xq6zh and I also tried one more. Odin gave a an error and failed. I then tried going into the boot loder and flash the I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip. Not sure if this was foolish or not. When I booted up I got to a black screen and there was a voice talking, maybe some sort of training, but I couldn't do anything.
If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to unbrick my S4 I would appreciate it. I know I screwed up.
Right now when I turn on the phone it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again. I tried connected to my computer and opening kies but it doesn't find it.
Try disconnecting your phone, completely closing Kies, then re-launching it with your phone still disconnected. Then click Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization then follow the prompts
