[Q] update doesn't fix gps - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i recieved the ota update, but still gps is way off. i thought this was one of the main problems this ota would fix. if someone has answers or experiencing the same problem lets discuss it and find a solution.

I'm just curious if your Vibrant has the hardware lock issue as well? I am wondering if there is a common element between that and the GPS not working.
I purchased two vibrants same day. They had different date codes on boxes. One had near zero gps function and was hardware locked, the other had good gps and was not hardware locked.

My Vibrant isnt hardware locked either and I can't even get a GPS lock outside. Ill be looking into this more later.

Good to know they don't seem to tied to each other then. Definitely let us know what you find out.

Its interesting you bring that up South, both my wife and I got our vibrants together, hers was two days "older" but was the one that was hardware locked though its gps was marginally better (getting a 40m lock in about 5 minutes vs. mine in 7-8 min). I wound up perma-bricking hers not realizing there were phones hardware locked like that. We exchanged it and got her one that's dated about a week after mine (so now mine is the "old"one ) yet no hardware lock on it. I know this is all circumstantial but it does indeed seem as if the hardware lock /gps issue is a flaw, not by design. Either way, running the stock JFD was **** on both, so I updated to JI2 and gps works great on them. I've since updated mine to Bionix 1.7 on mine and will be doing hers tomorrow.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

After the JI6 update mine didn't work until I completely formatted everything and installed JFD with ODIN and checked repartition. Then installed JI6 over it with Odin without repartitioning.
Then I used lbstestmode and reset gps data. (I tried this before formatting and got nothing.)
After the format and gps reset I got lock after about 4 minutes outside. GPS is still weird sometimes but for the most part, turning the phone off and back on will result in a lock after 3-4 minutes.
hope that helps

Put your phone in flightmode and see how much better your GPS is
Came to conclusion that the cell signal is interfering with GPS signal
causing inaccurate positioning, accuracy , and losing GPS signal all together

My GPS works amazing after the update, I also did the hardware lock fix since I alsohad a hardware locked phone.

There is a fix for the hardware locked phones? Are you talking about un bricking them or actually making it so you can get into recovery and download modes without using adb? And here I was thinking I was keeping fairly up to date with SGS development lol.

flight mode doesn't work, not. sure if hardware is locked. but went outside and took a drive and gps is all over the place. destination on right, but navigation saids turn left. very dissapointed g1 had a great gps.

[MOD] Fix for hardware locked phones / cant access recovery without adb.
HW unlock the phone so hardware buttons can get into recover and download modes.
As for un bricking them....if any one knows how to I am game to test

I have Ji6 and my gps does not work at all....no locks outside. I have 12 visible but it won't lock on any. the compass sort of works but it's erratic. I previously had the ji2 gps fix and gps/compass were working fine. I'm not sure what to do now. I already had a problem with the ota update bricking my phone because it conflicted with the ji2. I really would like to get my gps working again, but I'm getting really sick of messing with this stupid thing, I just want a phone that works :{

update didnt fix crap for me

Since OP says his GPS "is still way off" I suspect his GPS wasn't broken to start with. I believe the only thing they fixed was phones like mine for which the GPS did not work at all. And I mean that literally -- sometimes my GPS wouldn't even power on, and other times when it did, it would get a lock or even see more than one or two satellites. It was completely non-functional. Not just "way off".
Even after being "fixed" the GPS kind of sucks compared to a dedicated GPS or many other smart phones. Some have speculated this is because of the extremely thin form-factor and the type and placement of antennas. Maybe they used a cheap GPS chip, I don't really know.
But if it worked before (and one of our three phones did), from what I can tell there is no change with JI6.

j16 didn't fix gps (At&t sim)
I have a unlocked vibrant running on AT&T. Everything works but the GPS. CardioTrainer, Endomondo, and Google Maps aren't locking. Before the upgrade it did lock on to the gps, but extremely erratic. Tried the Labtest mod. and didn't get the phone to lock. Performed the upgrade and guess what? 0 gps locking. Not sure if the phone is hardware locked or if the fact that its not lockin in has something to do with the phone being on AT&T (which i doubt). After j16 update, I can't access Labtest mode either. any ideas?

Updated to J16 via stock Vibrant. Still no GPS fix, though I did that unofficial hack (#*#*1472365*#*#) before the update. Can't get back into the hack to reformat the settings after the OTA update.

(go in and turn it to 911 only say ok till I am back to the main screen then go abck and turn it on and say ok till I am back at the main screen again) then soft reset. it takes me a while now to gets locks but I do get them (no2chem5066 with radio 3.42.50)

have you updated your phone via *228? llboredll spoke about how me might of found some issues when programing his phone after verizon released the software update.
I had some serous issues trying to get a fix yesterday but just now I walked out my basement and got 7 sats and lock within 15 secs or better. So I will have to chalk it up to some weird anomaly yesterday.
guys thanks for the quick response, ya il try resting my "location" setting and yes i did do a *228' 2 ealyer today trying to fix the issue, it didn't change my PRI.
ya the location reset didnt work im still dead

Try a GPS program that displays the NMEA messages like GeoScout. If you don't see any then your GPS is not turning on. So either flash the ROMs again or you have a back GPS possible.
I wish you guys would read the damn forums.
The OFFICIAL VZW update kills GPS for anything but VZW Navigator, got it?

Read the first post, he didn't (repeat) didn't update his phone. His theory is that Verizon did something to the network to work only with the update such that us on Custom ROMs it will not work. Obviously that is not the case but that is what he was asking or theorizing about.
I think we all have read the forums on it and are tired of people updating their phones and then complaining on this forum that it screwed up their phone. I can only say "Do your homework before flashing anything" otherwise don't whine about what you have now.
so you think it may be more along the lines of software??
give me your top 3 pics and ill try them all out.
Thanks a lot, and yes I was theorizing it was a network issue not my phone its self. seeing if anyone else may have had a issue recently with it.
Fixed it, uninstalled GPS Today
Installed GPS Toggle, and got locks 30 secs after i turned it on, thanks for leading me in the right direction!
I even get locks in my Room witch did not happen before. so defiantly awesome!

GPS FIX!

If you gps isnt accurate, or takes forever to lock on, or is just not working
goto
settings--->Location & security---> uncheck vzw location services
try to use Standalone GPS services by itself, if not use Standalone and Google. just make sure the vzw one is off.
I tested with some people and it worked for them too.
WoW.... it really works... Just confirmed it myself. I am rooted, I did NOT do lagfix and updated to DI01
confirmed worked. it took 2 sec and was almost 100% accurate. with all 3 checked it was hit and miss and when it did find me it wasnt accurate and it took anywhere from 3-5 min to find me and it was usually about 1-2 football fields away,, still on old software, no update for me yet and no root
nice find

I have had that unchecked since the phone came out and still had problems. If there was any fix it was from the update.
unchecked... no difference, lock time is still measured around 1-2 mins.

Worked great for me. I was getting fed up waiting on the damn thing to lock onto me while I was driving and needed to find a place quick and directions. Thanks for the heads up.

Take it in to verizon and show them... They will give you a new phone.
So are you guys getting GPS locks in a matter of seconds all the time, even after reboot? Mine takes a few minutes all the time to get a lock, or else is very inaccurate. If I wait for the lock I get accurate to within feet, and it'll stay that way.
Well, I thought that worked for me until I rebooted my phone to see if it really worked. No dice.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong) essentially what you are doing is turning off the cell phone triangulation that google/verizon provide and sticking with just the straight GPS unit. I don't necessary see why turning off the "rough location" would effect the warm up time of the GPS unit, but maybe it actually does.
Just didn't work on mine after my GPS unit was cold.
Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue or software?
Browsing multiple forums brings up slews of the same complaints, but no one has put forth any kind of solution, nor has Samsung.
I have all location services enabled, and I get locks virtually instantly almost all the time, and it's always accurate to within probably a few feet. Maybe I'm just lucky?
I'd hate to say it, but I fear it is hardware, seeing as I have yet to have a lock take more than 10 seconds, usually 4 or less.
This is really the first time I've been on the good side of a widespread issue.

Yeah all of these "fixes" are merely temporary. All they are doing in storing the satelite info so they ock faster. If you reboot and turn off GPS for more than a few minutes it will start all over again. I will be paying VZW a visit tomorrow to see what they will do about since it seems not all phones are affected by this.
And I use my GPS a lot. The other day I was trying to find backway home and my GPS was so far off by the time it locked I was already stuck in traffic, had it locked normally, I would have been home free, my Droid1 would have never done this to me!!
I've only had issues with getting a lock after the GPS hasn't been used for a while. Lately, I've been wondering if some people who don't have issues have some type of app installed that periodically queries GPS? For example, I just installed the Asurion app that is supposed to check my location every hour. I haven't fully tested it yet, but now I'm wondering if this will keep GPS on frequently enough to the point where it won't have to re-start with the delay.
BTW... in early testing (when I first got the phone), I would wait to get a lock (maybe a minute), then after I got a lock I rebooted the phone and I still got an instant lock. So, once a lock is obtained, it seems like it keeps it for a while - even after a reboot. The main times I've had issues have been in the morning after the phone has been charging all night while asleep.

Yeah, I have a fascinate and so does my girlfriend. Locks both take minutes at the very least.
If this is hardware or if anyone has some legit theories, I'd like to know before my 30 days is up so I can de-root mine and exchange them both for phones that actually get a lock in a decent amount of time.

I would suggest you just go ahead and have VZW replace it, sounds like it could be a hardware problem. Can we unroot the TB yet? Don't know myself. Things like this are one of the reasons I have not rooted yet.

I noticed when i got mine it wouldnt aquire satelites fast or at all when i was trying with google maps. Then i downloaded gps status off the market and it seems to be working as intended now. Not sure what it was but now it works without a hitch.
Been using a custom ROM and I wasn't able to get my GPS working with 4G service turned off. As soon as I turned 3G back on, my GPS started to work again.
Could be pure coincidence, but who knows.
It has been suggested that GPS will lock on quick if you have all three location settings checked. I had unchecked VZW and Google and left stand alone GPS checked. In Google Maps, I could not get my location. Other GPS apps (like C:Geo) would lock on. I went back in and clicked VZW and Google locator services and the GPS locks on quick in all apps.
I have all 3 GPS systems on and it stays on searching for GPS.
im gonna revert it to stock and return to VZW for a new one.
edit: it just found me and is now working... still returning it to vzw for a new one though
I had the same issue, no rhyme or reason. Flashed stock and it's working again. It might have something to do with CWR thats causing it, although I'm no dev and it's just an educated guess.

issue was i only use GPS once a mouth so the "agps" gets out of date and google maps sucks at updating it or something.
havent had the TB long enough to say if this helps there but on the OG droids it worked great
Verizon Level 2 Tech Support Said...
So, sadly, I've noticed the same issue with GPS not locking on. I grabbed the GPS Status app and it shows compass data, but keeps spinning when it comes to GPS data....10-15 minutes and NOTHING there. Settings > Location > VZW, Standalone and Google location services are all checked.
The best happened this morning - Google Maps had me in a 2 mile diameter space about five miles from where I was. Reboot got me back to a 200 meter radius including my actual location, but then POOF - magically started creeping back to its original place five miles away.
All this was going on during a call to Verizon tech support. I wasn't using my TB for the call - calling through Gmail (loving that, btw). Level 1 rep had no clue (script reader to a T) and so got bumped up to talk to Sergio in Level 2. Guy told me this and I think it's nonsense. Wondering if you guys have thoughts.
He said that he lives in Albuquerque and has tried GPS on Verizon devices including the Droid X, Droid2 and the TB in LA, Denver, Tucson and other cities and says that in cities it has never locked on to his location while standing. While mobile, he says it does. I said, "I don't buy it as being the reason for my issue, Sergio" and the guy has the bravado to fire back "well, I don't need you to buy it, it's a fact.".
Guy was kind of a **** from that point on, but said he would say try a master reset. Should I head that direction? Does this smell like HW more than SW? If it smells like SW, I might as well root wait for the disgustingly talented XDA crew to come up with some GB ROMS, no?
Thanks for your thoughts!
Dom

Im rooted and using stock and all works well... I suggest as others have, download gps status, run it, then hit menu-tools-manage A-gps state-reset.
It should be ok after that...
GPS thinks im all over the place...
My GPS is also not working. I'm rooted but was having the same issue before rooting as well. I'm based in Houston, TX: Google maps is just off by a few miles, my time widget says i'm in Lynnville, IL, and Foursquare says i'm in some coastal town in Lithuania (and yeah it shows nearby locations in Lithuania to check into...i wonder if there's a badge for that).
Anyway, gonna attempt to return it today....will see if I can slip it past them.
I'm having GPS issues as well. It seems to take 5 to 10 min to get a location then it looses it and finds it again. Not happy with this at all. I've done a full reset and still no fix. I'm going to give CS a call and see if a new Tbolt will fix the issue.
Dan
My thunderbolt is fine. Just did a maps test and it found me in about 10s. I have two thunderbolts and the other one took about 1 minute to lock. Both tests were done from inside my house. Both are untouched stock form.
I also was having this issue and downloaded the gps status app and magically everything seemed to be working correctly. For some reason my phone kept saying that I was in "Balti" when I know I was in Portland. I think your best bet is to download GPS Status and reset a-gps status and see if that gets you back in line. Now my gps locks on quick and I am no longer in Balti.
Edit: oops
I'm no stranger to GPS issues on Android devices. When I owned a Samsung vibrant, it took forever to lock onto enough birds to get an accurate location, and I was constantly reseting GPS data and then running the GPS Test app testing it's functionality.
Do you really want to know how good your GPS is? Run GPS Test app with stand alone GPS only (no assist from data networks) and see how fast it locks and how accurate the position.
With the Thunderbolt, I bought the phone on launch date and didn't have any issues until I flashed my first custom rom. It worked perfectly after flashing it then out of the blue I noticed it wasn't working.
I flashed back to stock and it started working again. Just this morning, after a few days, when I needed the GPS for navigating a trip, I noticed it wasn't working again. I rebooted the phone and it was working again. Is it possible that something is interfering, such as turning wifi on/off? I'm not sure, but I think the reason for this not working at times is deeper than reseting the GPS data and it should work properly in stand alone mode.

[Q] Data Loss Ruining my GB experience :(

Hey,
I've been experiencing data connection loss on CM7-14/29, latest VGB, and PP (all MTD/AOSP GB ROMs).
Issue: Randomly, during the day, my internet dies, SMS/Voice appears unaffected.
This results in no connectivity on any apps, the 3G symbol is still there, but is white.
Turning it into airplane mode for 15s or so and then turning it back seems to fix the problem.
Attempted resolutions:
- Wifi sleep policy set to "never"
- Wifi sleep policy in spare parts set to "never"
- ESN swapped twice.
Anybody have any idea on what the hell I can do? BTW: My wifi is almost never on, so I don't think it's related to the WIFI handing off to 3G issue, because I RARELY use WIFI, and this happens (just happened again like 10 minutes ago), and there's no networks here it can even connect to, AND it's disabled.
I'm completely getting killed by this connection issue, b/c it stops randomly, then I don't get e-mail until I take notice that I'm not getting e-mail .
Pretty sure I'd take the SD card corruption issue AND the voice issue over this problem... :'(.
Problem resembles the invalild key issue that happens when switching ROMs, but the ESN swap twice (after two different ROMs were installed) seems to have ruled that out...or maybe I'm not doing something right about the ESN swap? Does the OTHER phone have to be activated during its time?
Anybody have any other fixes I can try?
EDIT:
Problem persists on all MTD AOSP GB ROMs, but right now I'm on CM7-29 with the EC09 modem, ESN swapped after modem flash.

I ran UKB 2.1 for like a week, last week. Not a hiccup. I don't think this is a HW issue, had no problems on UKB, nor OEM Froyo, nor OEM Eclair.
This is the second one (first one's camera HW was dead after like 2 weeks of use, verified by VZW), I really think the modem HW is fine, that's an issue with my setup or my process of flashing or something along those lines, still possibly key related for the authentication keys with Verizon if I'm not doing something right in the ESN swap process.
Maybe I'll try pushing a non-EC09 modem tonight (like ED05) and see if that fixes the issue, any other modems I should try? This problem sucks, just went to lunch, came back, no data *sigh*. Posted this right before I left for lunch (about 1.5 hours ago), right after it happened earlier...

idk man doesn't sound good. I am getting a replacement for mine (i somehow fried my modem/data or something?), but I just may never flash a rom again because ever since I started flashing my modem has become worse and worse... and now it is completely fried.
I have tried flashing a million modems before without a change, so I doubt that will help you. I would just recommend going BACK to what worked, and sticking with it, or you could fry your **** like I did.
i'm on miui 8.19 and every once in awhile i get a force close for android.phone and my 3g disappears too
I always had very weird data problems on 2.3 MIUI/CM7. The market would hang constantly or the browser would. I'd have to turn on airplane mode etc to get it back to normal.

Umm...ok.
Not trying to be a **** here but flashing the modem software has no impact on the modem hardware itself. Now, it is possible for modem firmware with an issue to cause damage, however, this is unlikely. The modem images are proprietary blobs swiped from OEMs, they're not tweaked by hackers in the Android community. I'm sure some OEM could figure out how to cause damage with one, but realistically they should be fine, even if the OEM was trying to kill it.
If your modem is getting worse and worse, regardless of what you did, it sounds like you had a hardware issue from the start. If that's the case, I'd suggest getting your phone replaced by VZW.
I would be extremely surprised if our problems are related. I'll keep it in mind, though.

Force close on what?
I don't get any force close, 3G just silently fades (not completely, goes from green to white). It still shows 1x or 3G accordingly, though. It's just white, hence, useless. Airplane mode for 10s fixes it.
Does this only happen on MIUI? Mine is pretty bad, happens like once an hour.

I always had very weird data problems on 2.3 MIUI/CM7. The market would hang constantly or the browser would. I'd have to turn on airplane mode etc to get it back to normal.

Yeah, I expect either of them to glitch or hang if there's no network connection present, I have no issues with that. I have an issue with the fact that there is no network connection present .

no gps lock, auto rotate and presence sensor doesn't work

first I've tried about 4-5 roms from stock tw to aosp style.
I get a gps lock but it's waaaaay off, floats around and doesn't give me my true location, maps, ingress etc none of them work properly.
my auto rotate doesn't work on any rom, beans/alliance dn3 gummy etc, it doesn't matter. if an app is landscape it tends to work and i can force an app to rotate aside from my camera app however nothing that should rotate when I turn my phone on its side seems to work. I. basically deal with it however is starting to get frustrating, I've tried everything I can think of and can't get it to work.
any ideas on what might fix this or is a warranty replacement the best course of action.
and lastly my presence sensor won't work, in calls the screen doesn't turn off I have to manually turn it off, I don't understand. it used to work great I could just place my hand in front of it on calls and it worked, not anymore.
I'm thinking I should just get a warranty replacement my quandary is that I've got my bootloader unlocked and I'd like to get another note 2 with an unlocked bootloader, however I know that's more always possible.

Chances for getting another Note 2 with it still on 4.1.2 is slim, but there is a chance.
Thats is weird that all of sudden this problem started occurring.. You did not drop your phone or do something that may have effected these things?
Have you tried to Odin a Stock Recovery and perform a Factory Reset? You might want to give that a go and see if it solves these issues.. Also when testing GPS, I have always resorted to an app called GPS Toolbox. It works great!

I have dropped it a few times however it lives in a TPU case, I've never dropped it from higher than about waist high. though it is possible
I'll try to Odin this weekend, can you point me to the most up to date rootable odin, I've done some searching I'm just not sure which is best.

Use the Stock Recovery image in the stickied Data Corruption thread in the General Section..
well I've tried a couple of different methods, guess something really is broken... I'm going to go back to bone stock and call VZW to get a replacement, damn this sucks... I'm not going to be able to flash the stuff I want.
whatever as long as everything else works.
flashed back to VRAMC3 called VZW went through 90 minutes of troubleshooting and updated all the way to Kit-Kat... still doesn't work.
and to top it all off, my vibrate just started going really strange.
I'll have a new phone tomorrow, hopefully ghetto root works.
May Not Be THE Solution, But Finally Worked For Me!
So, I've been experiencing GPS issues on R3Ds Port S5, SlimKat, Paranoid, DN3, and Dirty Unicorns... been trying all the solutions being posted in the threads before factory resetting and starting all over.
BTW I use GPS Toolbox to test my GPS connections and get 0/0 satelllites.
In a last ditch effort, I loaded AllianceRom and GPS connected (20/20 Satellites with GPS Toolbox)!! I was starting to suspect that it was hardware until AllianceRom. As great of a Rom as it is, I will likely not stay on it unless I cannot get any of the other Roms to connect GPS.
I'll let this Rom run for about 4-5 hours and then with a GPS fix, try and re-install Dirty Unicorns or R3Ds and report back.
I'm hoping this can be a solution for a least a few, if not all (wouldn't that be nice) of you experiencing the same issues as I was.
got a CLNR last week and everything works great.
sadly, no roms fixed the issue and now I'm on locked bootloader ND7.
on the bright side ghetto root worked and wanam xposed is at least a decent way to get what I want, manually editing my the files to increase volume etc is a pain, however it's better than nothing.
glad to hear alliance fixed your gps, hopefully it stays fixed.
