Get the best battery life! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So here's the situation...basically am getting about 12-14hrs of battery life. I have been switching roms, sticking mostly with bionix. However it doesn't matter what rom I still average about the same.
I'm not sure what I actually should be getting so I thought I would ask. I user my phone for basic use; texting, checking email, 30 min podcast, and an app or something. I don't game or watch videos.
Can we here what people are getting and if there is something that can be done to get more life on my battery?

The other dozen threads on the same topic didn't provide enough information?
Use 2G/3G Network Switcher and stay in 2G mode unless you really need speeds faster than EDGE (downloading a podcast). For texting and email, 2G is fine and will help battery life. Also using Juice Defender can help as well.

Go download Auto Killer, and set it to whatever level you want.
Also, go wipe you battery stats.
See if that helps...

Yup I've done all the above. Just curious if I'm still getting what is standard. I've searched the forums but if you know the best place to look then point me in the right direction. Keep the advice coming

12-14 hours is pretty good. Best I got was with Franken-Twiz 3. I think the J16 modem in Franken-Twiz 4 is killing my battery faster so you can flash Modem J12 or try Bionix 1.8 which has Modem J12 in it.

how do you wipe battery stats?

Yeah how do you wipe battery stats

Welp with 3g and wifi off I'm easily getting 16hours and on average I'll have 50-70% left of my battery.
I just normally use it as a phone thou. You know some emails, text messages, some surfing.
Just in case you think I'm nuts heres a screen shot as of now. 98% with 3hours on the battery and 48% with 16hours on the battery.
Last night I went to bed at 10pm and my phone was off the charger since 6am and I had 72% on the battery.
I've learned the more you fiddle with your phone the more battery it uses obviously. I've had several phones so I don't have to constantly play with it. Play videos or stream and well it will eat batteries. Use GPS and wifi it will destroy your battery life. Of course I'm not a power miser, but honestly I use it when I need it and when I don't it just sits there until I do.

Got it thanks

I'm getting similar performance with the JI6 OTA, and I generally leave both GPS and 3G on all the time. I just checked my battery stats and my phone's been off the charger for almost 4 hours and my battery percentage is still at 99%. Granted, I've only made two short calls and checked e-mail a few times but I'd call this very good performance. I also woke at 7:30am and surfed around on my phone reading forums and web sites (my display was on for the ENTIRE hour+) for over an hour this morning and when I plugged back in at 8:45 am, I'd used less than 10% battery. I'm also noticing that my phone is charging WAY faster than stock or JI2.

Personally, I have posted about this topic many times but I'm ignored. My battery was terrible before I rooted and did OCLF. After root+lag fix my battery literally tripled in life. I could go 2 days with the same amount of use. Watch videos, surf internet, make calls, do whatever and it would barely use my battery. After this JI6 update I am back to square one. I 'reconditioned' my battery by running it down to zero then charging it back up completely. It definitely helped but I'm still losing a percent by the minute just having the screen on.
Dont waste your time telling me to use juicedefender, turning off wifi, switching to 2g only, task killers, blah blah blah, or any of that crap. I've done it all. I"m still looking into the JI6 radio draining my battery though. Theres a lot of talk about that being an issue.

The JI6 Modem does drain your battery. No doubt about it. I've switched to JI2 and yes my GPS appeared to have suffered a bit and sometimes my Edge connection isn't as good as JI6, but way better battery life.

Or you can do what I do and leave your headphones plugged in and leave the music playing overnight. Seems to make my battery last about 2-4 hours more than it regularly would. Hope that helps

I have uninstalled any battery app because I noticed they drained my battery faster. What I have noticed about the phone, when I charge it with lets say 25 percent still remaining it charges faster,, naturally,, but the battery drains much much much faster. To remedy this,,i use the phone until the battery icon is blank and blinking before I start charging the phone. Naturally, this causes the phone to need a substantial amount of time to charge however the battery doesn't drain nearly as fast. I am a heavy user btw...give it a shot and confirm what I say.

I flashed bionix 1.8 two days ago, charged it up, wiped the battery stats, and let it dry clean.
The phone was in Auto mode for EDGE/WCDMA, reinstalled/downloaded my apps and some more, tested GPS on a few occasions, watched some HQ content on Youtube, and tested VideoPlayer, a few calls, some SMS and MMS, I listened to my music for the most part on it. 30+ hours later the phone finally drained.
With any stock FW's I could not get through more than 24 hours of a regular use with 2G mode only.
Currently I am at 79% at 11hr mark since unplugged.

Mine has been less than impressive today as well. Not good.
Mine seems to be pretty good so far. I think it'll take a few charges to get the most out of it though. I've used it a ton since about 10am and it's showing 80%. That could be anywhere from 80-89%.
Mines been sitting at 90% for about 3 hours now. It shows 90% when it drops down even a little bit because its only done in 10% increments. Pretty stupid if you have a phone to boast about battery... Motorola dropped the ball on that. You basically have a lowered battery meter all day lol
Thanks guys for all of the help!
My battery life has been decent, I unplugged it at 5pm yesterday, drove home with Trapster running (so screen on continuous for 30 minutes), used it heavily playing with it for a few hours in the evening, left it on to wake me up in the morning..
and drove back to work for 30 minutes with trapster when the 5% battery life warning went off right when I got to work.
No complaints here.
Unplugged the phone at 5am and it's 15mins to 12pm here - still full though I did laptop dock it for 5 mins several times to show people at work.

After 4 hours, I am at 75%. Email, tweaking, texting, 2 hr conference call on BT (Finiti w/Motospeak). If you check settings, Battery Manager, touch the Battery... you will see a usage breakdown. This phone is amazing. I expect after a few full charging cycles, the battery should get to full strength.
Is there a way to disable the 3G radio to save battery life (like in the iPhone)?

+1. Do a few charge cycles and then see how you feel.
I got my phone at 30 percent and it lasted four hours of straight playing around with until it hit 10 percent and I put it on a charger. My nexus one would have died with a full charge by then(original battery).
I'll see how it goes in a week, battery life takes a bit to figure out.
Remember that break-in period for batteries when you buy a new phone. Maybe after about a week it will get better? Also maybe try that battery calibrating trick...

Well considering there's no way to know it's at 75% lol it could be at 70% or 79%...either way it would show 70%. The battery only displays at 10% updates.
You can also set up custom battery saver modes in the settings>battery save(think that's it)

Mine has also done extremely well, especially considering it's day one. I've toyed with it all day playing games, music and YouTube along with browsing and playing flash video. It's been outstanding so far.
Battery gauge lies. But it's normal (kind of). See here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...bump-charging-and-inconsistent-battery-drain/

The Battery on this thing is a monster

I've not been able to drain this thing since I got it a week and a half ago. I have to say that I like to charge things over night. I've not been able to get the Photon below 40% before I go to bed each night.
I hear that you need to drain it full at least once but my habit of charging things overnight is getting in the way. Should I just let it go overnight one night?
I was under the impression that completely draining Lithium Ion batteries causes more harm than good.
"The smaller the depth of discharge, the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid frequent full discharges and charge more often between uses. If full discharges cannot be avoided, try utilizing a larger battery. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery."
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
Also, i'm sitting at 46% after 15 hours of normal (for me) use. not to shabby. I should mention i'm running Juice Defender and build 4.5.1A-1_SUN-198_5 from the dev. forums and i'm connected to WiFi 90% of the time.
going to try tomorrow without Juice Defender and see how it does. After that i'm going to disable SPB Shell and see if that makes a difference.
Thank you sir. I don't want to root my phone so don't run Juice Defender but I do use the Data Saver in stock a lot. I usually just listen to a lot of music and look for new stuff on FB, check XDA forums blah blah blah, yada yada yada...
I'll not feel paranoid about charging my phone now lol.
Now with my tablet (Acer Iconia A500) I did root and load a bunch of different stuff. This is my first cell phone though and I didn't want to mess with something that I have to pay a monthly charge for. I know I could but it's my first cell phone lol.
How much are you guys using it? For me, I use about 30min talking, 1 hr heavy wifi use, 1 hr light wifi use (reading), 30 minutes playing with settings, and the rest of the day idle...that gets me to about 30%.
I actually thought that is kind of weak. Maybe my battery isn't as healthy as yours? I've only had it for 5 days. I charge it every night.
I use it for about 7 to 8 hours of music, FB updates/posting, checking XDA, about 10 minutes of calls and so far some Netflix watching just to show off the phone to my peeps. Oh and some picture taking.
I am the same way I hate to discharge it completely and its been very hard. I've went a day and a half without charging before it went under 10%. I will say that I am on Wifi 90% of the time as I have wifi at work and at home other than that its on performance mode so no true bells and whistles. I'm thoroughly impressed coming from the Evo.

Average day for me is about 30 to 45 minutes of phone calls, 80 to 100 texts, few conversations on google talk, 30 or so emails on three accounts and i have trillian running connected to two accounts.
Connected to WiFi most of the time, bluetooth is turned on (not connected most the time) and brightness set to Auto.
I really dont see how this phone is a monster when it comes to battery life, I've actually been getting the exact opposite. I just fully charged my phone and after running for 2hrs and 7mins its down 78%.... This phone has yet to last me for the whole day. What am i doing wrong? I dont have tons of widgets and the only app that im running that might pose a problem is Go Launcher

For the past couple of weeks I've been swapping batteries with an external charger one to two times during the course of a day (plus the overnight charge)... Looks like it's time to do some housekeeping...
Edit: used to have battery life like everyone else in this thread though! While at the climbing gym last night I noticed that the thing felt like it was about to catch fire against my thigh - it had burned through about 60 percent of a freshly charged battery in about two hours. I have a nagging suspicion that I neglected to uninstall something (or a few things), and now something non-existent is constantly being polled for as a service after I launch some app for the first time...
when i got my phone it did great on a full day charge, but now with it just sitting at the office its at 70% by 11am i take it off the charger 7-8am .. it started to "weaken" after i downloaded a ton of apps i leave wifi on and 4g off but it also depends on your signal strenght at home it will kill the phone halfway thru the day because i have one bar

Battery gets literally 4 hours before it's dead

I ,am on it a lot, between GPS and general usage, ,but this still seems like too fast to drain compared to what others here have said. I had this problem with my Atrix too, maybe i am just destined for bad luck with battery life

I pull mine off the charger at 7:00 and at 3pm or so it's down to 85%, I'll put it on the charger at work until I leave around 5-6pm (mainly because I'm used to having to do this on my previous phone) and at night if I'm not using it constantly it's around 70-75% when I plug it in at bed time.
I suspect anyone getting that bad of battery life must be using it constantly, ie: Playing games, browsing, trolling facebook, etc.. Even in the "new toy" stage I'm getting great battery life.
FYI I don't have LTE, but do generally have good 4G.
You honestly can't use any phone on GPS without external power and expect that you're not going to discharge quickly. Assuming that you are running a car charger during GPS and just didn't say so, search the i-717 threads, since the topic has been well vetted on what chargers are more effective, etc. There are definite differences.

The fact that there are people out there that get really good battery life means the problem is you and not the phone. If you refresh facebook every minute of course your battery life will be crappy. apps like juicedefender are just marketing crap. as long as there are no running apps in the background that eat your battery, you do not need any juicedefender or tasker. also setting screen-off behavior to conservative on set cpu helps improve battery life.
When I first got my i717 and was using it on the stock rom I had pretty terrible battery life. I take it off the charger at 5:00am and had decent battery life (around 5 to 7 hours without GPS) but I use my phone a lot for internet/email. I think your battery life is completely normal given your usage.

I had GPS running on my phone for 4 hours today, had blue tooth on half the time without knowing it, sending text messages, making two 5 min phone calls, checking maps, checking FML and reading a book for about an hour and drained down to about 70% and I have the brightness set at auto. I would exchange it for a new battery.
On average with several texts per hour, several 5-10 min phone calls, taking a few pics and uploading them to picasa, checking facebook, updating status and checking emails I can pull off the charger at 630am and still have 50% battery (at least) by 630pm.
I do have the juicedefender (which isn't crap, it turns off signal after so long so you aren't trolling for signals when you aren't on the phone).

I had a ss of my buddies yesterday, but can't restore mms lol. There are plenty of other ss in the note section. He was at 22+ hrs with about 4:30 of screen on and some % remaining. I have to charge around 7-9 everynight at 4-4:30 hrs screen on, but my use is pretty heavy. I sync 4 gmail accounts, a separate GV, 3 calendars, and several apps.
If yours is much worse than that, you likely have a few troublesome apps or are playing games. First, after a full charge, reset cpuspy timers, lock it, and set it down for a few hours (I know, impossible). Then check to see that your CPU has been in deep sleep about 95% of the time. If not, use better battery stats to see what has been request wakelocks. Not only the most total time, but the total number. Any app that looks outrageous, freeze it or uninstall it. For system processes that look troublesome, Google. You can often find simple tricks online that will tell you what's causing them to go crazy. Beyond that, turn off syncing of anything that isn't needed or doesn't matter (like Facebook), and uninstall stuff you never use.
Another slight help is the brightness widget (don't use the actual widget, just put the app on your homescreen, it works the same) or dimmer in market as they can both set the brightness to a value of 10 (Samsung lowest stock is 20), and even if you can't tell the difference, it helps. Jkay settings in saurom can set the auto brightness profile slightly darker than stock. Umm, and the obvious, use less Widgets, longer sync intervals, processor scaling and speed profiles, and buy a couple rapid chargers, wall and auto.
A couple things to note after seeing a few of these posts...
BT can be on, but without it searching, connected, or listening it's not active.
GPS isn't active unless its in use aand you see the icon in the notification bar. That being said, fb, websites, and many other apps that request location will activate it.

YOU MUST CALIBERATE THE BATTERY!! I have no issues I use my phone heavy all day and get 15 hours and I still have 20% left. All you have to do is
1) Charge you phone until it says "charged"
2)Leave phone plugged in and power off and let it charge until the battery meter literally says "100" (screen will sleep so you can check with volume rocker to light screen)
3) power on phone and let boot and than power off and wait till you see 100% again
4) now keep doin this and you will notice it will start displaying "100%" faster and faster usually takes 6-7 times cycling like this
5) After you do this download Battery Caliberation (root required) app from market and hit the caliberate button and boom your good to go
I do this on every android phone I own when I flash a new rom or purchase a fresh one. Everyone should do this everytime you flash a new rom and I can CONFIRM significant battery longevity on all my android phones I have done this with
You only have to do it once so just get it out the way and you'll get through a whole dayand have some juice to play with.

Just to be clear here, Tasker has nothing to do with battery life. It doesn't hurt it, nor "help" it. However, you certainly could write tasks/contexts that would decrease battery life, and there are a few scripts out there which do silly stuff like autokilling, etc... But if we're talking "battery savings", Tasker and JD do not go in the same category.
IMO JD is only useful if you're frequently in an area with no signal, like you work in a basement or deep inside of a solidly constructed building. Since you mentioned Tasker, in this context it does help me a bit on battery because my wifi turns off when I leave the house, but that's also something JD can help with. If you don't have a wifi connection it'll turn off wifi (and I believe turn it back on periodically to see if there's one available?) I don't use JD, so can't speak too much for it.

Hour? Hour and a half? I'm working during that period. I usually hit news sites and G+ when I'm first at my desk in the morning, so that's 30 minutes or so off and on looking at it, then perhaps an hour over the rest of the day, sometimes more at lunch.
I'll look closer today and post back.

[Q] Need help figuring out battery drain

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to using android devices, i've played with some of the devices my friends own as well as a tablet my brother owns but this is my first personal device.
Anyways, I've had the phone for around 3 days now? It's going great but I feel like the battery is draining a bit fast and I'm not sure if I'm "normal" by standards or if my phone is slightly problematic.
I've attached the two screen shots below
Man things I do on my phone are Gmail, Push email for work, browsing, WhatsApp, Gchat and occasionally music and maybe 20-30 minutes of video.
As you can see from the graph there were two very short moments where I was charging the battery as well due to transferring some files. Finally, I've had a chance to completely drain the battery once but haven't had a chance to do one of those long charges people talk about but have through multiple charging occasions gotten it to 100, although right when I unplug it it goes to 99%.
Thanks!
EDIT: My phone wakes up quite a lot I think because I quite a few work emails a day, around 80-100 in addition to another 20 or so gmail emails a day. Thanks.
I have my own problems about the battery life too. Specially on standby mode all turned off (wifi, sync, gps, data, etc) 93% when I sleep then when I woke up battery goes down to 80%
are you too experiencing this as well?
haven't tried that yet, I attributed my battery drain to email, could be another problem then.
Start with Better Battery Stats from the market and look for wakelocks .

There are a few posts on battery issues.
I too had battery issues and in my case it was a couple of things.
I put the screen onto auto brightness and put wifi onto off when phone asleep.
These 2 things fixed my totally. I know lots of other people are having issues and its neither of these things but these are what helped me.
I also got an app to stop apps starting up. There are a suprising amount of apps that start when your phone starts up that you dont need to be running.
I think having wifi on constantly and getting 19 hours out of a charge is darn good for android.

I have experienced this after about a week of use. I left the phone when it was 95% and after an hour in stand by, it drops to the 80 something mark, b/w 84-86% any more people who experienced this?

Same here. Drain is about 2.5% per hour on stand-by overnight.

Yup, I had WiFi on pretty much on at home and at work and it certain does chew through your battery! Started at 7am at 100%, back home by 8.30pm and at 20-30%. By 10-11pm, it's on charge again.
Usage is fairly average, x2 30 mins of music to and from work, emails on push, send and receive texts, a couple of calls here and there.
I didn't save snapshots of some tests I carried out, but I'll try to recreate the situations again and upload them.
It seems if you have your WiFi settings, Keep on during sleep to Always, it's constantly draining your battery, even if your handset is on standby. I've left mine to Never, but have found only a small improvement to battery life.
Attached is my current usage WITHOUT WiFi as much as possible, there are a few power spikes where I've had to use WiFi and to connect to PC to transfer some documents, download some Apps. Also I'm NOT at work for the last two days, so usage has drastically dropped. Loooking good at 2D 1H 50M, battery at 45%
You can see for most of the first day where I haven't used WiFi there is a slow, but steady drop, the first major drop was when I was playing a game on the way home, then it's steady again. The biggest drop was when I used WiFi to download the odd app or two, then I turned it off again.
Hope this helps the OP in answering some questions about finding out what is draining the battery.

Battery Life Span

Am envious to those who managed to use their phone for more than a day. I bought this phone for about 2 weeks now and have done the normal full charge for 8 hours on the first time. Since then, I have fully charged twice and let the battery gone flat once. I have flashed Neutrino rom and currently Latveyit rom, and the battery last best 12 hours so far.
I charged the phone to 94% at about 7pm and just made two calls and two text messages. I did a navigation on maps for about 15mins max. By about 11pm, battery is at 57%, I play some games for about 10mins and went to bed, in the morning it's about 35%. I realise that the first 50% really goes fast and after that it's pretty decent until less than 20% and it drains fast again. Background application I have are the normal chat programs, whatsapp, viber, kakaotalk, skype and ebuddy. I have waze running in the background although I think it shuts off after 15mins. I have a mix of wifi and 3g usage, usually on wifi though. Is this normal?
edit: I also have Lookout antivirus running
All your chat programs running in the back ground prevent your device to sleep correctly, they wake it up every time they check if there is a new message.
Try to keep only the apps you use and try for each app to increase the check delay or disable it.
The antivirus does help.
2 weeks is a bit early to make a comment about the battery.
Download Battericalibration from the market and use it every shift rom change.
Read about topic on the forum but not become a maniac in "battery life".
If the screen stays lit for 5-7 hours the battery will be empty in like 7-8 hours. If you only speak 1 hour at it the battery will be empty in 3 days.
All depends on how you use it!
Sorry for bad english.

I thought that the chat programs will only cause problems if there are frequent messages since they're base on push?
2 weeks is early? How does that affect the battery's performance? I thought when it's new, it's most optimum and slowly degrades through time? The screen was off most of the time unless I was doing anything I mentioned or just checking the time which is just on, check then off. I don't think I am paranoid over the battery life, just curious how to get it over a day.

In my opinion the battery reaches her max in 3-4 weeks.
Download the app from the market and use it after every rom change.
I didn't called you paranoic, just that you mustn't be so worried.
My recomandation for a longer battery life is CM7.
GOOD DAY!
Read forum for more details.
Sorry for my english!

You might try 1Ghz faux kernels as well. They seemed to have helped my battery life considerably.
Chek out what apps you have running in the background and be sure you set youre network yourself (my phone was always changing from 2g to 3g and after i selected the network myself it gave me a 1day + boost .
And you shoud know that the litium polimer batteryes are affected by cold temperatures.
I wish you luck!
I did use cm7 (neutrino) and got about the same battery life span as the current rom (laytveyit), and am currently on the faux 1ghz kernel. Anyway, I will see how it performance in the weeks to come and hopefully the newer version of the rom will improve it. I thought cold temperature helps preserve the battery's life span?
EDIT: Thanks for all the advice!

Lol all those chats are you problem imo
The "standard" apps used to figure out what's eating your batteries are:
BetterBatteryStats: for wakelocks
CpuSpy: to tell if you phone is going into deep sleep or not
Built in Battery Usage: to see a pretty graph and tell what's using the most juice
SystemTuner: I just recently started playing with this, lots of information.
Look up BetterBatteryStats here up XDA. There's plenty of threads on how to use it. Look up wakelocks.
