Hi,
I am getting ready to flash my first custom ROM. I have a Hero with firmware 2.1-update1 and baseband 63.18.55.06OU_6_35.15.01. I have been following the newbie guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253) and I'm intending to flash FroydVillain 1.5.
My question is this: can I safely flash the latest radio before flashing the custom ROM? I figured this would make sense as I can check to make sure my radios work fine after the radio update before I install the ROM. Or will this cause problems?
Yep, can do if you want.
And its simple to roll back if you have issues.
Why should i upgrade my radio? I'm still running the one i got with the StockROM 1.5 and flashed like 8 CustomROMs already, but never upgraded my radio.
So, why should i upgrade my radio?

I believe the radio controls gsm/data signal and battery and some other things. So the newer the radio the better these things will be. So it's really a no brainier, but just make sure you flash the correct one or you'll no doubt brick your phone.

I know what it does. But what do you mean by better? Longer battery life? I doubt so. Better signal? Maybe.
What i mean is, what does it improve exactly and in what way?

As new towers get built their data (signature) needs to be registered to the phone before it will connect to them. The radio contains this data.

Hi to all,
I'm owner of a GSM Hero and I'm new to this forum. After the last announce made by HTC (Hero update in june), I'm thinking to install a custom ROM...but, cause I'm a newbie, I've few questions and also...I'm afraid to brick the phone!!! Is it dangerous???
1) I've read the tutorial about installing a custom ROM but I didn't understand when I've to install the last radio version. At beginning of the process??? After the backup?
2) I was thinking about VanillaEclair and VillainRom. At the moment these ROMs have GPS and data connection fully working?
3) Major known bugs of these ROMs (all apps are working, etc...)? Are the acceptable for everyday use? (I don't use exchange contact sync).
All your opinions will be appreciated!!!

Rooting itself isn't that dangerous, as long as you follow the instructions and don't do anything silly like pull the battery mid wipe then you should be fine
1) Radio can be flashed at any time, I usually update the radio after the ROM is installed an setup.
2) + 3) I don't know about Vanilla Eclair, but there is very little the doesn't work with Villain ROM (very feature complete)
sequence
supposidely you have rooted the hero. its usually radio first and then the rom. radio actually can be changed before the rooting as well, if i'm not wrong.
The only way you can brick your phone is during a radio or recovery flash (which you won't be doing very often).

Only with an official update. I meant after you installed a custom ROM

Understood. Custom Rom first. Radio update then. Right?

[Q] Is it more "safe" to flash the offical ota MR2 Radio than the leaked one?
Im hearing of people bricking there thunderbolts installing the gingerbread radio, now does this apply to all "officially"released radios (like the one posted by the user andrew8806) on XDA or only the leaked ones? Is it safe to go on gingerbread now or should i just stay on froyo? And can someone recommend/link me a "safe" radio to flash so i can install a gingerbread rom. i have proper understanding on how to install radios i just dont know what radio to install. and should i flash radio first then rom or it dont make a difference ?
Thanks
the only radio that had a problem was th leaked mr2 and it was causing some random reboot issues but there all fine now. theres actually an mr2.5 2.75 and 3.0 radio. im on the 3.0 radio and i have had zero problems. you can find it on mclabias website --> http://devious-intentions.info/modules.php?name=Downloads&cid=6

Is there any benefit to switching to the 3.0 radio? Forgive me if that's a stupid question, I'm pretty new to the rooting scene...only been rooted 3 days and wonder why I never did this sooner.
i get way better service than i used to on any other radio. i pretty much live in a dead zone, but after switching to the 3.0 radio i can actually make calls here 4g data is way faster as well. do it!

Short answer: No
Longer answer: It was discovered that the bricks were hardware related not software. I have flashed every radio that has been released since I purchased my T-bolt at the beginning of May and have had ZERO issues.
I c. Can you link me to a radio you reccomend. And do have any tips to prevent bricking when flashing it or using it o:?
I just rooted my EVO 3D (revolutionary) and flashed my first ROM. I still have the stock radio which is 0.97.10.0530.
Should I upgrade the radios to the latest ones or is it not worth it? Have you guys seen better signal with the latest radios?

The radio is one of the pieces we receive in OTA files but receive very little to no information on what is updated/changed. Also since it is a binary image, its much more difficult to run a diff on it against a previous radio image.
I'm still on the same stock radio version as you. I haven't bothered to flash the latest version. I generally don't unless I'm having some serious type of issue with the radio or there seems to be overwhelming support for the latest version which there usually isn't.
Hope that helps.
Here are the two available radios posted by other users. The radio "17.5006.08.27" has been reported to have issues with the US AT&T Titan so be warned.
You Flash at your own risk!! If your phone explodes and kills your entire family, that's on you.
RADIOS
17.5006
16.23
Once I find out how to extract them myself I'll post the others.
May I also add here that 17.5006.08.27 radio in general *may have* problems with Titan?
Once that was flashed, I am unable to get rid of that radio and thus, no other ROM boots on my phone any longer. Not even the one with radio 17 or stock!

This is strange, why just now this is happening considering we been using this radio version for a while since hspl became available with titan. Could it be that you got a bad flash from one of the radio v 17 that came with custom rom you flashed? Just on the weekend I flashed roms with radio v17 (WPV rom7.8 4.1) then tried nhatoa's 7.8 with radio v16 and now I'm back with WPV's v4.2 with radio17.
I think I might have had a bad flash with radio 17 then. I am not sure how to revert it though.

If everything all fail using normal flashing tool, it might pay to try a goldcard method to flash stock rom?

Yes, I was suggested that too earlier. I'm a little skeptical with goldcard as I've never taken that route.
I'm more curious in terms of what could have cause a bad flash where a radio cannot be changed at all?

Dont be skeptical ...Its an esay task .. I have done this a lot of times ... Once you have the cable all other staff its easy ...
Alot of things can go bad when you flash ... dont bother thinking about that ...

I'm sure you'll share your findings if ever you find out what've cause this issue with your phone and save us this trouble of "bricking" our phone. As to the goldcard method , you're rigght to be skeptical, initially it's a hit and miss but once you got the Y cable and micro sd card going it is really quite straightforward process. I have an ATT titan so the only way to flash custom from stock is by GC method and been doing this quite regularly (being a flashaholic)

Hi Do you perhaps know if this upgrade will come to us in South Africa as we also have AT&T HTC Titans (2x)? Zune says that no updates are available.
Otherwise can the experts please enable this upgrade via the CAB sender method?
Thanks in advance

Hello guys,
Can anyone reupload radios for Titan? Links are dead.
Thanks in advance.
So I like others are having some issues with signal issues ever since I applied the updated radio from HTC. I want to downgrade to see if this gets better. I'm on CM and rooted so I am able to do whatever I need. Is there a way to downgrade besides doing RUU back to stock?

Yes - see d08speed3's post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2740450
a little more than halfway down he posted links to flashable radios.
"NEVER flash the same radio on top of each other"
Yup just flash my zips. I have the most luck with the .0110 Radio. I stick with this one.
